“How Happy!”

CREATIVE TENSION: As we look back and remember those brothers and sisters who have died in the faith, “happiness” might be far from our minds. But when we remember that “blessed” can mean “Oh, how happy!” we see how God fills us with joy in the most unlikely of circumstances. And that gives us hope that can only come from Him.

How Does It Look

Growing up as a pastor’s kid, I knew how to hide my true feelings because I needed everything to look good for a world that was watching and judging me. Here is the problem, no one is good. I am capable of doing good things, but I am not wholly and completely good all the time. I mean, when I compare myself to some people, I may seem good in my own eyes, but when Christ is my standard, I fall short every time. On the outside, I might look the part of a good Christian, but deep inside I struggle with pride, envy, and anger.
We can be focused on how we look to others, that we can’t see how dirty our heart is. It’s like when we have company and we make sure to clean the main areas, but our closets are a hot mess. Only Jesus can clean our hearts and change us from the inside out.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

When we truly understand grace and the love of God, we will no longer be satisfied with merely avoiding bad things. Jesus calls us to a life of abundance, not avoidance. We don’t simply choose to do good things to avoid shame or for the external perception of holiness but because we have been made holy by the blood of Jesus. His love compels us to pursue His goodness and extend His grace to others, impacting lives for Christ.

CrossWalk Update:  God Talk at Home

Younger Kids (Pre-K – 1st grade) learned that God used Esther to save the Jews.
Take Home Point:  God is powerful—God’s power saves.
Read the Event: God uses Esther to save the Jews, from an early reading Bible, or read & summarize the event from Esther 2-9.
Prayer Power: Ask family members tell Jesus about some sins they have committed. Thank Him for dying on the cross to save them from those sins.

Older Kids (2nd – 5th grades) learned about Jeremiah’s warning to the people.
Take Home Event:  God is patient—come back to Him.
Read the Bible:  This lesson covers the book of Jeremiah. You may read about the prophet Jeremiah from a Story Bible or any available Bible. Key verse: 2 Peter 3:9, “…he is patient for your sake. He …wants all people to have an opportunity to turn to him and change the way they think and act.”
Prayer Power:  Ask all family members to think of how they have disobeyed God or made bad choices. Confess your sins. Then thank God that he is patient and sent Jesus to die for our sins so that w3e can turn back to him.
