Confessions of an Overwhelmed Wife – Hannah

By |2022-07-21T05:33:20-05:00July 21st, 2022|GodConnect|

God Almighty,

I come before you but cannot stand in your presence. I am broken beyond words. I wait, and I wait, but no answer. My eyes have cried.

I have tried to let go of this desire to have a child. I want Your will, not mine, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t shake loose that longing in my heart.

When I think I have turned a corner and see progress, I am knocked on my back with pain. I have given the best years of my life to waiting. What is left of me now? When will You answer me? Even the priest drove me away yesterday. He thought I came to the temple drunk and tried to make me leave. Of all people, I thought he would have compassion, but again I was told to be quiet.

My arms long to hold a baby! If I am supposed to let this go, Lord, You will have to give me the strength. I cannot let go of it on my own. I am stuck, afraid to let go of a dream. Am I so wrong? Isn’t this desire good? The desire to have a baby with my dear husband? He wants me to love him. He asks why isn’t that enough. Lord, why isn’t it enough? How come I am punished for a pure and good desire? Why is it so easy for Peninnah? I hate my jealousy. It’s so easy for her, year after year. She is so happy and proud of her children. I am happy for her, but Lord, it’s bittersweet.

What do the others say about me? I feel them whispering and ignoring me. Maybe what I have is contagious, and they will catch it. So they leave me alone.

Please hear my groans, God, because I am all out of words.

The Overwhelmed Wife

My dear sweet Hannah,

Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest. I am the comfort you seek. I know every hair on your head. I knew you even before your beloved mother conceived you. I knit you in your mother’s womb; you are an incredible design from your head to your toes. I have loved watching your life unfold, the adventures, and the boldness of your heart. I hear that in your prayers, too. You know what you desire, and you are not afraid to come to me. I love that! Come to me often! I am never tired of hearing your requests.

I will meet all your needs, according to the riches of my glory. When your heart is overwhelmed, come to Me. I am never weary, and I will never let you fall. I will not just answer your prayers, and I will also provide for your physical needs. I love you, and I will give you the desires of your heart.

Confessions of a Passionate Pastor – Paul

Confessions of a Passionate Pastor – Paul

Almighty, Victorious, Ancient of Days!

You are most gracious! Who is like you? Your great name, I praise your great name! I could shout it from the mountain tops! I want the world to know what I know!

Lord, I wrack my brain to think of what I can do to capture people’s attention. I will run through the streets in just my underclothes like King David if that is what would make them listen. They seem so lackluster. So asleep! I want to wave my hands in front of their faces and scream to get them to wake up. Don’t they notice?!? Don’t they care?

They talk about things that seem so dull and unimportant. All I hear is how much the cattle are going for, the strange disease over the goats, the rising cost of cotton, what the Romans are up to these days, and even the weather! WHO CARES?! Don’t they care at all that salvation is at hand?!

This is life or death! Even the Christians seem sluggish. Who has time for sleeping, eating, and parties? What a waste! How can I make them see?! How can I help them understand?

A Passionate Pastor

My Dear Paul,

You are exactly who I made you! I have loved seeing you throw your entire heart, soul, and body into whatever you do. You have been that way since you were a young man. You’ve accomplished many things as a result of that gifting.

Every good personality trait you have comes from Me – your love for people, endless energy, and especially your passion for this life. That is a reflection of my heart to yours. I know you don’t always understand other people, and that’s okay. You don’t have to. I don’t want everyone to be the same. I know you try so hard.

Remember when you told me you would become all things to all people to save just one? Oh, did that make me smile. You couldn’t be shy or quiet if you tried!

I want to remind you not to get so caught up in the mission you miss the ministry. It wasn’t that long ago that your passions resulted in killing Christians. I don’t bring it up to condemn you but to remind you to give others grace. Love is patient, and love is kind. I have each person on a journey towards me. My timing is not your timing. My ways are not your ways.

Above all, my grace is enough for you. My power is made perfect in your weakness.

Your Loving Father

Confessions of a Lonely Queen – Esther

Confessions of a Lonely Queen – Esther

Lord,

I am so lonely. Is it possible to be lonely when people surround me? I have so many blessings that others pray for, so why am I still lonely? I wish I had my mother or father here. I long to sit next to them and hold their hands. I want to ask questions and have them tell me everything will be alright, but I will have to wait for heaven to do that.

People around me seem so busy and full of chatter. They laugh, whisper, and tell inside stories of their fun. I feel so left out.

I escape to my room, where I feel safe. I’m so grateful for my cousin Mordecai. He has taught me so much about you, Lord, the most important thing. But he’s a guy! He listens, but he doesn’t always understand what it’s like to be me. God, I long for someone to know me, really know me. To appreciate my silly sense of humor, to understand the little things about me, like how I like my fish cooked. I want them to know my heart’s deep dreams and longings, to see every part of my past and still think I am precious.

My husband knows me on the outside. He knows my body. What about my soul? Will he still want to know me as I age and my beauty fades?

There are parts I have to keep hidden. I can play the role, but I am longing for a friend.

The Lonely Queen

My Dear Esther,

I have seen your pain and isolation, and it is not what I intended for my sons and daughters. We are made to be in a relationship with one another.

The desires of your heart are pure and honest. Remember my provision to you. I provided a guardian for you when you became an orphan. I have put you in a place where you have influence and power over many people. I will give you the wisdom and courage to stand up for what you have been taught.

Trust me. Remember, I kept you safe during the king’s audition process. I am going to use this loneliness for good. What seems complicated now will produce something extraordinary. I will use you to be a savior of your people, as I am your Savior. I have positioned you for such a time as this. Trust me. I will bring joy and peace to you and to those you love. I have a plan to save you. I love you.

Your Heavenly Father

Confessions of God’s People

Job 42:7-17 | After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has. So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.” So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer. After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before. All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring. The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters. The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers. After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so Job died, an old man and full of years.

Romans 8:28 | And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

Isaiah 43:1 | But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

Each of us is somewhere in the middle of our stories. No one’s story is finished yet, but I approach situations like I am on the story’s last page.

  • “Lord, things are just not happening at work the way they are supposed to!”
  • “Jesus, I lost my patience again. This is how I am going to be forever.”
  • “Heavenly Father, I can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep. I guess I’ll never know what it feels like to be rested again.”

When I am stuck in the middle of a situation where I can’t figure out the ending, it can feel discouraging. I want to know how it all turns out.

I struggle to relate to people in the Bible because it all worked out for them. I know how their story ends.

  • I know Job lost everything, but God had a plan to redeem him and restore his life.
  • I know Nicodemus couldn’t get past his confusion, but Jesus shared with him some of the most famous passages of the Bible. (John 3:16)
  • I know Elizabeth battled with infertility, but in the end, she had a son named John the Baptist.

When we get to the end, we forget the middle.

The middle is where transformation happens! In this study, we will look at different people in the Bible who are stuck in the middle. For each devotion, we will observe these four things:

1) the confession of the person in the middle of a difficult situation

2) God’s response to us

3) questions to ponder

4) follow up Scripture readings to see how it all turns out

Spoiler alert! They are all happy endings. That spoiler alert doesn’t just apply to these individuals. Every one of our situations has happy endings because God is writing our stories, and we know the end.

As you read, notice how the men and women won’t use their names in their confessions because their situation becomes their whole identity. God always flips our identity from where we are to WHO we are. God always calls us by name and gives us a new identity as a child of our Heavenly Father. Your identity is not your situation. You are loved, redeemed, and called by name. You are His!

Matthew 19:29-30 | And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife19:29 Some manuscripts do not have or wife. or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.30But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

2 Corinthians 5:10 | For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

JESUS FIRST

Every day, we have a choice to make about what kingdom we’re serving—either God or ourselves. When we put ourselves and our desires first, that means we’re putting Him last—and He will return the favor in His kingdom. So we should not seek great things for ourselves here, but do as God asks us, making Him our priority.

Because the truth is this life is a breath, and there’s far more coming than we can imagine. Remember: “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed . . . according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10). For the believer, this is not unto salvation, because if you’ve accepted Jesus as your Savior, you are assured heaven. However, what’s being evaluated are the rewards for how we served Christ here—and that will shape how we live in heaven.

The challenge for you is to realize that right now you are setting the tone for eternity—the authority and privileges you’ll have forever. So put Jesus first. Humble yourself now, and He will lift you up.

Jesus, You are my priority. Lead me in how to serve You well. Amen.

Acts 17:26-27 | From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.

Psalm 139:15-16 | My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

YOU MATTER

God’s determined will is what He’s going to do, and what you and I must understand is that He doesn’t make such plans exclusively for world events or nations. Rather, He also makes such plans for individuals. He makes them for you (Psalm 139:15–16).

We can know for certain that there are aspects of our lives that are part of God’s determined will. For example, today’s verse tells us the Father chose where, when, and to whom we would be born. God actively chooses our personalities, talents, and abilities. Likewise, the Lord creates and equips us with His purposes in mind.

So take heart that you are not a mistake. Understand that there are certain aspects of your life that are part of God’s sovereign, determined, unchangeable plan that will happen. Of course, this may raise questions for you—especially when thinking about the hardships you’ve experienced and even the unfortunate decisions you’ve made. But do not lose sight of the fact that He planned your existence, and your life matters immensely to Him. Therefore, look for His good purposes in every part of His plan for you.

Jesus, thank You for Your determined plan for me. To You be the glory. Amen.

Matthew 6:33 | But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

A HINDRANCE OF SELF-WILL

Is there a driving goal in your life that takes God’s place in your heart? Perhaps it’s to attain a certain level of status or have a certain kind of relationship. You know what it is because it consumes your thoughts, prayers, and sleepless nights. Sadly, it may also be blinding you to God’s plans.

At the core of this is self-will—the uncontrolled impulse inside us that demands our own way. So when considering the pursuit of God’s will, we must be aware that our minds may be so overtaken with our own goals that we’ve become insensitive to the Lord’s promptings. Don’t let this happen.

God wants to meet the deepest desires of your heart. Yes, He may have a different way to satisfy your soul than you’ve chosen. But take heart; He is not insensitive to the longings in you—and, in fact, answers them more fully than you can imagine. However, realize that He is also vigilant to ensure that nothing else takes residence on the throne of your heart—which is His rightful place. So make God your driving goal, and leave the rest to Him.

Jesus, reveal any self-will that’s hindering me, and take Your rightful place on the throne of my heart. Amen.

Romans 15:7 | Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

ACCEPTED COMPLETELY

The inner drive for acceptance—either from ourselves or from others—can lead us down dangerous paths. We can engage in destructive behaviors with the desire to prove ourselves valuable, desirable, capable, or worthwhile. It never begins that way, of course. Initially, we may engage in activities and habits that are quite harmless to bring out the best in ourselves or show ourselves worthy. But when one thing after another fails to address our deep inner need, we can become addicted to that which covers over or dulls our pain rather than heals it.

Friend, understand that at the core of what you feel is ultimately a deep need to be accepted by God. You must understand that you were created by the Lord with purpose and excellence (Psalm 139:13– 16). You don’t have to run from your mistakes, because He forgives you of them through Christ’s death on the cross. And regardless of your past, you have a good, worthwhile, and wonderful future.

So right now, repeat to yourself: “In Jesus, I am accepted by God. I am who He wanted me to be. I have purpose and worth.” Stop doubting your value and seeking significance through sin. Instead, embrace who He created you to be.

Jesus, thank You for accepting me. Help me take hold of Your love. Amen.

Psalm 27:11 | Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.

LISTENING FOR DIRECTION

What is the very best course for your life?

This is a difficult question to answer considering our limited wisdom and vision of the future. We cannot possibly know what challenges will arise on the path before us. This is why one of the most important disciplines we can develop as believers is that of listening to God. He always knows the way that is most beneficial for us.

All too often, however, the Lord’s wisdom is muffled by the clamor of daily life. Sometimes we start out walking with God but get so far ahead of Him that we can no longer hear His voice. Perhaps we get busy, prefer doing things our own way, or are lured into listening to others who have their own agenda. At that point, we can lose contact with the only Guide who truly knows the most optimal path forward.

Don’t make that mistake. Be alert to the Master’s voice as you journey through life. Stay in the Word, walk in the Spirit, be receptive and responsive to God’s promptings, and you’ll be sure to remain on the right road.

Jesus, I want to travel the very best course for my life, and I know it is found in You. Teach me to hear You and walk in Your ways. Amen.

James: More Grace 20

Devotional Series: James: More Grace

I apologies for missed dates. Our automated scheduling system “missed” the date and time. Hopefully it’s all working now. – Rod

James 2:20-24 | You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

How foolish it is to think that all is well between you and God if you are refusing to obey him!

James is warning his complacent readers. He gives them evidence that faith without obedient deeds is ‘useless’ (v. 20) by looking at the importance of action in Abraham’s life.

    • Why was Abraham ‘considered righteous’ (v. 21)?

James is picking up on the incident in Abraham’s life recorded in Genesis 22. There, Abraham obeys God’s command and puts his son, Isaac, on an altar. God spares Isaac and then tells Abraham that he will bless him in extraordinary ways ‘because you have obeyed me’ (Gen. 22:18).

Is this salvation by works? No. ‘Righteousness’ had already been ‘credited’ to Abraham many years before this, just because he trusted God (v. 23). In verse 23, James quotes this earlier incident recorded in Genesis 15:6. There is no mention of Abraham doing anything at all at that earlier time. Abraham became ‘God’s friend’ just because he trusted him.

    • So what was the relationship between Abraham’s faith and his later obedience (vv. 22–23)?

As Abraham lifted his precious son onto that altar, his faith and his actions ‘were working together’ (v. 22). Abraham’s inner trust in God was flowing out into active obedience. What he did was really just a demonstration of his faith in God – that is why he was ‘considered righteous’ for what he did (v. 21).

This later obedience made Abraham’s faith ‘complete’ (v. 22). It ‘fulfilled’ that earlier scripture about Abraham believing God (v. 23).

In what way was Abraham’s faith incomplete until he put his trust in God into practice? Think of it like this: when you fill in a form, there is usually a space at the end for your signature. You sign there to confirm that everything you have written above it is true. Signing the form doesn’t make it true, but it makes a clear declaration that it is. If you don’t sign, the form is incomplete.

Obeying God is a bit like signing your claim to trust him. It confirms that you really do. In this sense, Abraham’s actions ‘completed’ his faith. His earlier promise to trust God was ‘fulfilled’.

Look along a true believer’s timeline and you will see that trusting God is always followed by doing what God says. Genuine faith will always show itself in obedience.

James’ message in verse 24 is stark and challenging. If you claim to trust God but then refuse to obey him, don’t think God will accept you.

Pray

Give thanks that, because of Christ’s death, our faith is ‘credited to [us] as righteousness’. Pray you would express this trust in your obedience to him.
