GodConnect Devotion – Jesus Is All I Need

By |2021-02-15T05:11:33-06:00February 15th, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 38:17-22  [NIV] | 17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. 18 I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. 19 Many have become my enemies without cause; those who hate me without reason are numerous. 20 Those who repay my good with evil lodge accusations against me, though I seek only to do what is good. 21 Lord, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God. 22 Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.

There may be days, weeks, or even months when life feels overwhelming. Like the psalmist, sin in our lives can become a heavy weight to bear causing us great anguish. The world with its evil forces leads us down a path of despair. There are times when God lets us fall to our knees so that the only thing left is to look up and cry out to God.

Our merciful God says, “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). As we cry out to God, he brings us to the realization that he is all we need in our lives. As we face difficult challenges, God calls us to him for strength and comfort. Jesus conquered sin, death, and the Devil. There is nothing we need to fear when we place our hope and trust in the One who conquered the grave.

Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).  With these words Jesus tells us to take courage. Despite our struggle, we are not alone. Just as Jesus’ Father did not leave him alone, Jesus does not abandon us to our struggles either. If we remember that the ultimate victory has already been won, we can claim the peace of Christ in the most troublesome times.

Prayer:
“Lord, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God. 22 Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.” Amen.

Action Plan:

I will take courage in Jesus, who promises to never leave or forsake me.

GodConnect Devotion – God Does the Real Work

By |2021-02-11T05:56:28-06:00February 11th, 2021|GodConnect|

Mark 4:26-29  [NIV] | 26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

Because the seed of spiritual life grows by the power of the Holy Spirit, we do not need to badger, dictate, persuade, or force people to believe – God does the work. Faith in Jesus truly is a gift from God. Anyone who genuinely believes is drawn by God himself. We may plant the seed of faith by our witness; God makes it germinate, sprout, and blossom. We need to faithfully minister to others and trust God for the growth.

So why are we so hesitant about sharing our faith or reaching out to the lost? Perhaps one reason is our fears or concern for having a lack of knowledge about the Bible.  We worry about being asked a question we may not be able to answer. Our role in the Kingdom of God is to scatter the Word of God around us and let God be the one who produces faith. We can help others come to faith as they see Jesus in us throughout our daily lives.

Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “You may be the only Bible a person ever read.” God uses us to draw others to Him. Through the hearing of God’s Word lives are transformed and renewed. We may not fully understand how and when God gives faith, but we know it’s through the power of the Holy Spirit working through God’s Word. The kingdom of God grows as we spread the Good News of Jesus. We don’t have to have a theological degree to make a difference, we simple share in plain words what Christ has done for us.

Prayer:
Lord, help me be a light in a dark world. Open my eyes to see the opportunities you lay before me to share the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will strive to have others see Jesus in me.

GodConnect Devotion – Do Not Fret

By |2021-02-10T04:43:45-06:00February 10th, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 37:1-9  [NIV] | 1Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; 2for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. 3Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 5Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: 6He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. 7Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

Seeking God’s will for our lives is an ongoing challenge as we face the task of turning from our sinful ways and desires. We look around and see people turning from God only to proser in their lives. We witness evil in the world and it seems as though they are the ones being rewarded. God tells us not to fret or be envious of those who do wrong for they will soon wither away and die. God calls us to a greater task – Trust in the Lord and do good.

When we put our trust in God he promises to be active in our lives and give us the desires of our heart. As we grow in our faith and dependence upon God, our desires turn to his desires as the Holy Spirit works within us. God changes our hearts from envy to being satisfied. A changed heart takes time and is a process of our growing relationship with God. We are to be still before our Lord as we wait patiently for him to act. Unfortunately, in our sinful state we can slip into anger and take matters into our own hands.

Our hope lies in the hands of Jesus who came to redeem and rescue us from our sinful ways. Jesus fully understands our frustrations as we see the evil doers of the world prosper. In faith we live in the hope of new life in Christ knowing this life is not the end. Jesus came to rescue us with a promise that a day is coming when there will be no more death, suffering, or evil. Our hope rests in the gift of Baptism when Jesus calls us his own by name and promises an inheritance that is everlasting – life eternal.

Prayer:
Lord, may Your presence be made know to us. Help us to have the right spirit to turn from sin and seek your will. Lead us to be patient as we await your action and refrain from anger when life does not go as we see fit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action Plan:
Take a heavy burden you face and give it to the Lord, be patient and trust in God.

Jesus, My Shelter

Psalm 3:3-4 [NIV] | But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.

Life is filled with the unexpected and our world changes in the blink of an eye. The challenges we face each day brings about anxiety, stress, and sometime doubt. We tend to look to our own resources for protection against the evil that prevails in our world. We are confronted with the harsh reality that on our own we fail and cannot defeat the tainted world we live among tainted by sin. There is one who is greater and his name is Jesus.

Psalm 3 describes a dark time in David’s life. His enemies, including his own son, have overwhelmed and opposed David. When all seems lost and  completely exhausted, David looks to our Lord for strength and guidance. “But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.” In the midst of despair Davis seeks our God.

In our sinful state we too are lost, overwhelmed, exhausted, and condemned. By the blood of Jesus, we are shielded from the eternal consequences of sin leading to eternal death. Like David, we face difficult and dark times but experience hope in the refuge of our God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we God living within us to help lead our lives from the lost state we encounter from sin. Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, we can call out to our Heavenly Father in prayer knowing he not only hears us, but answers according to his good and gracious will.  We praise God for the gift of our Savior, Jesus – the one who came to save and be our refuge in times of storms.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, lead me to the cross of Christ who is my refuge and salvation. Help me to seek you first as you hold me tight and help me turn from the sin. May I always seek you as my refuge.

Action Plan:
Today I will cast my burdens upon Jesus who is my strength and refuge.

GodConnect Devotion – Saying Yes to God and No to Sin

By |2021-02-08T05:01:46-06:00February 8th, 2021|GodConnect|

Mark 1:12-13  [NIV] | 12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

God is not the author of our sin. When a person is caught in sin, they often look for someone to blame. It is not in our character to take on the responsibility of our negative actions. The fact is we sin because of our own weakness. Like Adam and Eve, we see something that looks pleasing to the eye and in our weakness, we take hold even if it opposes God’s command or will. Jesus knows what it is like to face temptation, yet he remained sinless.

For forty days and nights Jesus experienced Satan’s evil attacks in the desert. Jesus was weak from a lack of food and water; it would be easy to fall into temptation when plunging into sin appears to be something that elevates. Sin is to do the opposite of God’s will for our lives, it’s doing a 180 and turning away from God. We want to cast all the blame on Satan, but truth be told, it is our own fault. Satan merely entices us to turn from God and in our weakness we fall short.

God is faithful, he will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear. But when we are tempted, when sin comes creeping at our door, God will provide a way out so that we can endure it. Through the power of the Holy Spit working in our lives we can say no to sin and yes to God. We can walk in the new life we have in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We need to stop the blame game and take responsibility for our actions. God has opened the opportunity for us to repent and turn from our sin. We have been set free in Christ.

Prayer:
Gracious Lord, thank you for the hope I have in you. Help me say no to sin and yes to you. Amen.

Action Plan:
I will seek God’s power and strength when I’m faced with Satan’s attacks.

GodConnect Devotion – Trusting in God

By |2021-02-04T06:05:37-06:00February 5th, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 28:16-18  [NIV] | 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

God works many amazing miracles in our lives that are beyond our comprehension. Imagine being one of the eleven disciples and seeing Jesus only days after witnessing his death on the cross. Would you have doubts? Many, if not most, people would have some room for suspicion. Major events were occurring in the lives of the people following the resurrection of Jesus.  The old order of things had now passed as Jesus came to live, die, and rise for us. He now sits at the right hand of the Father preparing a place for us.

So many amazing miracles witnessed by the disciples and yet some doubted. The same happens today as people are called to put their trust in Jesus. We have among us the inerrant Word of God speaking truth into our lives and yet some face doubt. Thomas, one of the disciples, said to his fellow disciples, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (John 20:25). Are we like Thomas doubting the presence of God in our lives?

Jesus promised to never leave or forsake us. He provided a Helper to work in and through our lives. Through the Holy Spirit, God is always with us and yet there are people who face times of doubt. Our God gives us the faith to put complete trust in him even in times His presence may seem distant or void. We cry out to God asking Him to prove His presence. Jesus responds to Thomas, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (Matthew 28:29). God is always with us and provides the means for to believe and trust in Him, whether seen or unseen.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of Faith. In our times of doubt help us to cling to your promise to never leave or forsake us. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will look to see the many ways God makes himself known to me.

GodConnect Devotion – Take Refuge in the Lord

By |2021-02-02T06:52:08-06:00February 4th, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 34:4-10  [NIV] | I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

Life is full of questions that are beyond our understanding. Where are we to turn when answers are not clear, or we find ourselves receiving conflicting information? David, in his Psalm, instructs us to seek the Lord, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears (Psalm 24:4). We pray to God to deliver us from our fears – all fear. We seek out God through prayer and await God’s response. God promises to answer every question and walk along with us is all matters of life.

The challenge we face in listening to God involves the multitude of interferences we face from the world and our own sinful nature. The ways of the world often oppose the will of God. The world attempts to draw us away from the one we should trust and to focus more of self and our own personal desires. We find ourselves seeking refuge in our own abilities and understandings involving tough situations in life. God calls those who love him to seek him in their fears and doubts. In the reading David is giving us a challenge, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

David experienced God’s blessing and shares that we too can take refuge in God and receive God’s blessing. We are called to revere God for he promises only the best for us as his Baptized children. God will not withhold himself from us; he provides us with all good things. When the world seems to be crashing in, when life feels hopeless and lonely, our merciful God will deliver us from our fears. Regardless of where we are in life, we are blessed as we take refuge in the one who already has a perfect plan. It is time to taste, and see that the Lord is good.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us taste the goodness of your unending love. Draw us near to you when we drift away or seek other means of refuge. Thank you for the goodness you give in our lives. Amen.

Action Plan:
I will turn my fears and anxiety over to God and take refuge in him.

GodConnect Devotion – Choose What is Right

Matthew 27:19-24 [NIV] | 19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. 21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered. 22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” 24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

The crowd before Jesus called for the release of Barabbas. Pilate was torn and did not know what to do with Jesus. Perhaps Pilate hoped to let Jesus go as well. Luke records that Pilate said, “He has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release him” (Luke 23:15–16). Pilate’s wife did not barge onto the scene confessing newfound faith in the accused Messiah, but she was unsettled by a dream and wanted to cut a wide path around any complicity in a plot to harm him. She was unduly troubled in ways she had never felt before. What was Pilot to do?

The crowd had other plans: Let Him be crucified! This was a remarkable request—crucifixion was the Roman penalty for rebellion and abhorrent to the Jews. Pilate was losing ground; the huge crowd in the courtyard before him seemed to be on the verge of a riot. Pilate asked the people to specify some crime that would make Jesus worthy of death: What evil has He done? he asked. The accusations against Jesus were flimsy, but the crowd kept on shouting more wildly and loudly that they wanted Jesus crucified.

For Pilate, there was never a doubt about Jesus’ innocence. Three separate times he declared Jesus not guilty. He could not understand what made these people want to kill Jesus, but his fear of the pressure the Jews would place on him made him decide to allow the crucifixion. Pilot went against what he knew was right. In desperation, he chose to do wrong. We share a common humanity with Pilate. At times we know the right and choose the wrong. God speaks to us through His Holy Spirit. It’s time we listen and follow God and choose what is right.

Prayer:
Lord, help me hear the voice of the Holy Spirit within me. Lead me on a path that chooses right over wrong. Guide me when I am called upon to make decisions that impact others. In Jesus name. Amen

Action Plan:
Even in the most challenging of time, I will seek God’s will and choose what is right.

GodConnect Devotion – Standing Firm in Faith

By |2021-02-01T05:18:08-06:00February 2nd, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 26:69-75 [NIV] | 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Like Peter, we may find ourselves in a difficult position as we proclaim God’s Word. In the heat of touchy situations such as abortion, same sex marriage, we may face persecution for our beliefs.  When Peter was confronted with his connection to Jesus, he made a natural and impulsive response—he lied. Peter gave the answer that Jesus had predicted: He denied knowing Jesus. When we are challenged to speak the truth in love, we too may backdown.

There were three stages to Peter’s denial that can lead to denying Christ in our lives. First, Peter acted confused and tried to divert attention from himself by changing the subject. Second, using an oath, he denied that he knew Jesus. Third, he began to curse and swear. Believers who deny Christ often begin doing so subtly by pretending not to know Jesus. When opportunities to discuss Christian beliefs come up, they walk away or pretend they do not know the answers. Like Peter, we may hide in the face of being challenged in our beliefs.

Peter went out and wept bitterly, not only because he realized that he had denied his Lord, the Messiah, but also because he had turned away from a very dear friend, a person who loved and taught him for three years. Jesus is our friend. Jesus says, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32). Like Peter, we too can be restored and made right with God. As we walk each day in faith, God calls us to be bold witnessed of His love, even when it is hard.

It has never ceased to amaze me that we Christians have developed a kind of selective vision which allows us to be deeply and sincerely involved in worship and church activities and yet almost totally pagan in the day-in, day-out guts of our business lives … and never realize it.
-Keith Miller

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, lead us to be a bold witnesses of Your Son, Jesus. Help us to be strong in the face of persecution when others oppose us in our beliefs in You. Guide us to speak the truth in love to those who do not live according to Your will. Amen.

Action Plan:
I will seek to speak the truth in love when confronted about my faith and desire to live a life of Christ.

GodConnect Devotion – Abundantly Blessed

By |2021-01-31T06:51:10-06:00February 1st, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 32:1-5  [NIV] |  Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Blessed is a powerful word describing God’s goodness as He pours out His abundant grace and mercy upon us. Blessed are those whose sins have been forgive – abundantly blessed. Blessed are those whose sins are covered – abundantly blessed. God covers us with the blood of Jesus and forgives all our wrongdoings against Him and our neighbor. We are blessed beyond all understanding. God says to us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). God wants us to be free from the burden our sin.

Like the Psalmist, we feel the heavy weight of sin. The crushing blow of sin rips through our body as though we are wasting away. We groan and complain how the consequences of sin can be too great to bear. Are we afraid to speak to God the truth within our lives? We struggle to be real with God, holding on to our sin we want to believe that God does not know. When we hold on to the guilt and pain associated with sin, our hearts are heavy, and our strength is weak. We need to head to the cross of Christ.

God gives us an open invitation to be truthful and to unload our burdens, the action of our sin, upon Him. “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9). In Baptism God claims us to be His own and gives us the gift of faith to believe in the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection. What could be any freeing than to know our God invites us to be honest and real about our deepest secrets? We are blessed! It is time, as God’s children, to confess and receive His blessing.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the unconditional love you have with us. Lead us to the cross of Christ where we are blessed to share with you our sins. Help us experience you rest knowing we are Your forgiven children. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Action Plan:
Take a moment and be real with God. Confess your sins to God and allow Him to bless you with the gift of forgiveness and give you His peace.
