As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Count the Cost”

What does it cost? That’s a basic question that we often have to ask ourselves when we’re considering a purchase or a major life decision. So what does our faith cost? Jesus’ words in the Gospel reading today calls on His followers to count the cost of following Him. But we remind ourselves that, for us to be God’s children, He counted the cost and paid the price in Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Don’t Discount Your Joy:  A Devotion

I just finished worship and was walking down the hallway at church singing a phrase of the last hymn, “Let the cross be our glory, and the Lord be our song,” when someone rounded the corner and caught me singing. The Joy of worship was in me.

We have been fooled to think that joy isn’t a signal that God is at work in us. Many focus on the suffering of Christ and sharing in that but forget why the suffering took place—for the joy set before Jesus. The excitement we feel for the job we’re doing, the children we’re raising, the unseen ways we serve, that is the joy of the Holy Spirit in us. Jesus said we’re to love and obey Him, “so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” John 15: 11

Our joy and excitement are part of God fulfilling the desires He planted long ago in each of us, even if we aren’t aware. As we partner with Him, there may be hard decisions, grieving of expectations, and dying to ourselves. But when we make Holy Spirit-filled choices in our lives, there will also be a subtle hint of joy and excitement that can’t be explained. Don’t discount your joy.

REMINDER: RD MIZE WORSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGE

Effective next Sunday, September 11, one worship service at RD Mize will start at 9am. Over the past six months, the Board of Elected Elders has monitored attendance patterns for all services. At its last meeting, the board voted to discontinue the 8am worship service for better efforts at RD Mize and for better utilization of volunteers and staff. Thank you to the elders, ushers, sound techs, and organists who devoted much effort and time to make the 8am service possible.

Can I Really Pray Without Ceasing?

Have you seen the signs in the lobby or along the street? Timothy will embark on a new sermon series starting NEXT SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, teaching us the importance of prayer in all aspects of our lives. This six-week series will lead us to grow in prayer as we gather, grow, give, and go in our journey with Jesus. The people of the early church devoted themselves to fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Together, we will look at God’s Word to see and experience how God desires us to be in fellowship with Him in prayer.

How do we pray without ceasing? The inquiring mind wants to know. The good news is that we are not alone in our prayer life. The disciples implored Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Without hesitation, Jesus taught His disciples what we now call The Lord’s Prayer. Throughout our series, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, you will be provided tools for growing in your prayer life.

The pastors are excited to share this gift of prayer, given by God, with you! Persistence in prayer can be a challenge, but God gives us strength to continue to call on Him, to pray continually, to unleash the power of prayer in our lives so that He may continue to work in us when we need it most. It’s time we start to PRAY WITHOUT CEASING (1 Thess. 5: 17). Stay tuned for many different opportunities during the year to deepen your prayer life.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Watch Closely”

Keep your eye on the ball!  At least that’s what baseball coaches say to their players.  They knew that a big key to hitting was watching that ball closely.  Today in our gospel lesson we meet a group of folks who are trying to keep their eyes on Jesus.  They are watching His every move and listening to His every word.  Despite their “efforts” they miss it anyways.  The question we ponder today is not simply are we keeping our eyes and ears on Jesus but rather are we missing it?!

God Calls Our Troubles Light and Momentary:  A Devotion

I have Bible verses I don’t like. I know I’m probably not supposed to admit that. That’s not to say I don’t believe them. The entirety of God’s Word is active, alive, inspired, and for our good. I know that. But some of the things God says are hard pills to swallow. One of the verses in Scripture is 2 Corinthians 4:17. It states, “For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory”. I’ve never liked the fact that God tells us that our struggles are “momentary and light.”

Have you ever felt that way?

Some of us have tough roads to walk. Our bodies are failing us. Some of us have lost loved ones. We’ve been wounded by people in our inner circles. Our mental health is struggling. None of what we’re going through is light.
What I’m learning, however, is that God doesn’t scoff at our pain. In fact, 2 Corinthians 4:17 isn’t about minimizing our sufferings at all. God isn’t telling us that our struggles don’t matter. He’s giving us a promise that one day our pain will end. In fact, He’s telling us that even the worst imaginable suffering on earth will be nothing compared to the “eternal weight of glory.”
This might not mean much now, but know this: everything in life is temporary, including our pain. God won’t always take away our pain, but He does promise to be our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Rest in that promise. This world is not our final home. A day is coming when joy will be ours and no one and nothing can ever take it away again.

Join the Wyatt Worship Team!

Do you love worshiping Jesus through music? We do!
Timothy is currently seeking vocalists, musicians, and sound techs for its Wyatt Campus worship team. If God has gifted you with a talent to share, and you feel Timothy may be the place, let’s connect and talk about it. We are currently accepting applications and would love to have you complete one so you can share your desire to serve the Lord and His people.
Have questions? Join us on Sunday, August 28th, at 11:30am after the 10am worship service for an informal question-and-answer time. Come meet Sandy Sauter, Wyatt worship team leader, Pastor Rod Lindemann, and other worship team members to discover what it’s like to be a part of the team. Our goal is to seek talented people who desire to share their gift in leading others in worship.
Applications available at https://timothylutheran.com/worshipteam/
If you have questions, you can contact Sandy (sandys@timothylutheran.com) or Pastor Rod (rodl@timothylutheran.com).

REMINDER: RD MIZE WORSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGE

Over the past six months, we have had two worship services at RD Mize at 8:00 and 9:15. This was done as an experiment to see if the attendance at RD Mize warranted having two services. The Board of Elders has been monitoring the attendance patterns at RD Mize for the past several months.
At their last meeting, the Elders decided to discontinue the 8:00 worship service. This is being done to better focus our efforts at RD Mize and better utilize our volunteers and staff. Starting on Sunday, September 11, there will only be one worship service at RD Mize at 9:00 AM.
We are thankful for the elders, ushers, sound techs, and organists who put in a lot of hard work to make the 8:00 service possible.

Sr. High Mission Trip

The National Youth Gathering was an amazing trip but now it is time for our Sr. High kids to pursue God’s calling for them to “GO” and love the least, lost, and lonely.  That’s right we will be taking our youth on a national mission trip summer 2023.  There will be an informational meeting to discuss first steps in this planning process on August 28th following worship at the Wyatt campus in the music room.  Any kiddos AND parents 8th grade to 12th grade are invited to come and hear a little about the plan.  If you cannot make it but are interested please contact him before August 28th.  Let’s see how God will stretch us.

Youth Living and Loving like Christ!

13 total youth and adults headed down to Kansas City last Saturday August 20th to serve at Agape Pamoja’s “Camp Twende.”  This camp is a once a month camp for refugee children who live in the area.  There’s games, a Bible Story, small group time, pizza, and even a little dancing.  Our youth and adults were absolutely amazing sharing Jesus along with lots of laughs.  Jesus is on the move. #Heartyourhood

We Need You – Timmy Burger Volunteers!

This year, Timothy’s Festival Committee is celebrating its 40th anniversary of gathering in fellowship to support the famous Steakburger traditions. This all-hands-on-deck outreach ministry needs 300+ volunteers to ensure another successful effort at the annual Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest on Sept. 16-18 on Main Street in Downtown Blue Springs (volunteers also needed on Sept. 15 for booth set-up). Proceeds are always designated for non-budgeted church facility needs, after a 10% tithe is allocated for a worthy internal or external mission focus.
SO, it’s time to sign up for one or more of your favorite shifts! It’s a wonderful opportunity to put our collective hearts to serve into action in our community. Starting this Sunday, you can sign up in the lobby at either campus or click on the link or QR code provided here.  Join the FUN and get your TIMMY BURGER!  Stop by the table to visit with Festival Committee members if you have questions about this fun opportunity!

Nancy’s Retirement Luncheon

On Sunday afternoon we hosted Nancy Nowiszewksi’s retirement party in the Family Life Center at RD Mize.  There was an amazing turnout of current and former Timothy members along with family and community members who have served alongside Nancy throughout the years.  Lunch was an amazing spread of salads, fruit, sides, tasty chicken tenders, and an abundance of desserts.  After lunch, we were reminded of God’s amazing work through Nancy as words were shared from the executive board, the board of elders, Pastor John, Pastor Lieb, Tom Nowiszewski, and a few others.  Nancy wrapped up the event making sure we all knew she really was retiring.  There were certainly laughs to share and some tears shed.  We are so grateful for the countless lives that were transformed through Christ as our Lord worked through Nancy.  The best news is, she and Tom aren’t going anywhere and will remain a part of our Timothy family!

2022 First Fruits contributions total $92,885.59, as of Aug. 7th. Thank you!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“The Narrow Door”

We don’t like being excluded. We don’t like it when people we know are excluded. We want things to be fair. And so we chafe against Jesus’ exclusive message that the door to the kingdom of heaven is narrow. We want everyone to get in and we worry about how to guarantee that we will. But the guarantee comes from God and His grace in Christ. We trust Him as the Door and the Way that leads to eternal life.

VISION:  A Devotion

When I was five years old, I had my first visit to the optometrist. I don’t remember what the optometrist looked like, but I remember being scared and gripping the armrests as he leaned in and shined bright lights into my eyes. A few weeks later, a pair of plastic frames was slipped over my nose. Once I saw the world through my new glass lenses, the fuzzy world I had been living in became clearer.

Our vision isn’t just physical. We need to have a clear spiritual vision as well. Unfortunately, we’re all born with poor spiritual vision. As a result of sin, our past, or our individual struggles, we experience the same result:  a fuzzy, fearful, or frantic way of life that lacks God’s hope and peace

Clear spiritual vision is seeing our circumstances, purpose, and future through God’s eternal perspective. Gaining a clear spiritual vision will get us unstuck and lead us to freedom from sin. God’s clarifying tools include His love, grace, and peace. God’s invitation requires us to get up close and reveal where we need His corrective expertise and power. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4: 8.

Anytime is the right time to draw near to God! Drawing near to God isn’t just for the desperate times in our faith; it’s also for the times in life when we realize that we’re looking at the good things in our lives, but not looking at God. The rest of James 4: 8 is a warning to those who think they can live well by splitting their spiritual lives between their own desires and God’s plan. That’s like wearing a corrective lens on one eye and not the other and can result in a painful headache!

The beauty of drawing near to God is the promise that He will come near, bringing His peace, grace, and the clarity that we need to live confidently in Him and allow us to get through what we’re experiencing.

RD MIZE WORSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGE

Over the past six months, we have had two worship services at RD Mize at 8:00 and 9:15. This was done as an experiment to see if the attendance at RD Mize warranted having two services. The Board of Elders has been monitoring the attendance patterns at RD Mize for the past several months.

Can I Really Pray Without Ceasing?

Have you seen the signs in the lobby or along the street? Timothy will embark on a new sermon series starting Sunday, September 11, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, teaching us the importance of prayer in all aspects of our lives. This six-week series will lead us to grow in prayer as we gather, grow, give, and go in our journey with Jesus. The people of the early church devoted themselves to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Together, we will look at God’s Word to see and experience how God desires us to be in fellowship with Him in prayer.

How do we pray without ceasing? The inquiring mind wants to know. The good news is that we are not alone in our prayer life. The disciples implored Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray.” Without hesitation, Jesus teaches His disciples what we now call The Lord’s Prayer. Throughout our series, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, you will be provided tools for growing in your prayer life.

As fall approaches, Timothy’s pastors and commissions are working together to provide opportunities to deepen our prayer life. In October, we will host a church-wide prayer breakfast. In November, a prayer service is being planned for all ages to attend on a Wednesday evening. Coming soon, the pastors will host a prayer walk in different parts of our community as we pray outside our church walls. Prayer Cards will be provided over the next twelve months as we focus praying on one of the ministry organizations supported through our Timothy tithe. We plan to teach all interested parties about starting and maintaining a prayer journal. Much more is in the works. At the end of our series, each person will receive a carabiner as a reminder that prayer connects us to God and with each other.

The pastors are excited to share this gift of prayer, given by God, with you! Persistence in prayer can be a challenge, but God gives us strength to continue to call on Him, to pray continually, to unleash the power of prayer in our lives so that He may continue to work in us when we need it most. It’s time we start PRAYING WITHOUT CEASING (1 Thessalonians 5: 17).

Blessings as we grow in prayer together,
Timothy’s Pastors

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend

In Jeremiah’s day and age, the land was filled with people who claimed to speak for God but were really telling people what they wanted to hear. Sound familiar? God’s people have always had to be content with false prophets who try to peddle false hope to them. But God reminds us that our only hope is to turn to Him and His powerful Word, for it is in Him that we find peace and security.

Send the Text. Make the Call:  A Devotion

We passed in the hallway and chatted for a few minutes. Something inside made me want to go further, but I did not. Let’s be honest. How often do we want to extend a casual invitation but never follow through?

Now, now take a deep breath. Grace on. Guilt off. We intend to send the text and invite them over, but so often the “woulda, coulda, shoulda’s” create obstacles.

We’ve spent too much time in the last two years being lonely, isolated, and doubting how to move forward. Galatians 6: 2 tells us to, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

So many people are carrying heavy loads in their personal lives. By simply taking a moment to text, make a call or get a cup of coffee, we can help to lift some weight, to bear a little of the burden, and by doing so fulfill the law through love. Many times, showing up with our focused ministry of presence is enough.

Won’t you join us? Send the text. Make the call. Introduce yourself to the neighbors. Apologize. They all matter. And in doing so, Scripture declares that we fulfill the law of Christ.

Support Group Opportunities

DivorceCare:  Are you divorced? Separated? You don’t have to go through it alone. Timothy has a support group that will help you during this time of change. We understand how you feel and have a real concern for those experiencing separation and divorce. This DVD-based program features Biblical teaching for those recovering from divorce and separation. Timothy’s group meets weekly in Room 102, RD Mize Campus, on Mondays, from 6:30-8pm, beginning Sept. 12, for 14 sessions. Contact the church office with questions or to register your attendance (816.228.5300).

GriefShare: When a love one dies, the grief that follows can be confusing and overwhelming. Support is available through a program called GriefShare, a DVD-based program  that features Biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Timothy’s GriefShare group will meet weekly on Thursdays, beginning Sept. 15, for 14 sessions, in the Fireplace Room (302), RD Mize Campus. Contact the church office with questions or to register your attendance (816.228.5300).

There is no charge to attend DivorceCare or GriefShare, but the cost of the workbook is $20; scholarships are available.

Care Ministry Opportunities to Serve

Lutheran Hour Project Connect Tracts:  Are you interested in overseeing the tract holders at the RD Mize Campus near the office entrance? This involves ordering new tracts and stocking the holders, as needed. Timothy covers the cost of the tracts which can also be accessed online. Estimated time for serving is 45-60 minutes monthly.

Greeting Cards Did you know Timothy has a display case in the Fellowship Hall at the RD Mize Campus for purchasing reasonably-priced greeting cards which are purchased by the church or donated by members? As cards are purchased (honor system), you may be just the right person to restock the shelves inside the display case with cards stored in the lower part of the cabinet. Estimated time for serving is 30 minutes monthly.

Prayer Shawl Coordinator:
This ministry is a blessing to those needing prayers of support. The coordinator will help identify people who would benefit from a prayer shawl by checking weekly prayers, Prayer Chain, and/or asking Sandy Gregory in church office and then coordinating delivery of the prayer shawl to the recipient. Must be willing to make phone calls but will NOT crochet or knit the prayer shawls. Lucy Johnson will be in charge of making the prayer shawls and will work with the coordinator. Estimated time for serving is 30 minutes weekly.

Prayer Chain Coordinator: Timothy is seeking a new coordinator who will email prayer requests to member of the prayer chain. The prayers are received through Timothy’s website and from ministry staff. Individuals may also contact the coordinator directly by email. Coordinator will maintain email list, receive email address changes, and delete names from the prayer chain, as needed. Coordinator will also send a postcard to any members who have been prayed for, using a postcard and stamps provided by the church. Number of prayers sent are reported to Care Coordinator, Sandy Gregory. Estimated time for serving is one hour weekly.

It’s Timmy Burger Time!!

Timothy Lutheran School Update

The 2022-2023 school year is upon us, and there is so much excitement at our very own Timothy Lutheran School! Currently, total enrollment (full-time K-8, pre-school, and home-schooled) is 175 students! Yes, 175 students will walk through Timothy’s doors to grow in wisdom and knowledge and to hear about the life-giving news of Christ crucified and risen.

TLS welcomes four new teachers, joining our amazing veteran staff to provide a great education and great support to TLS families. Stephanie Hamilton and Melissa Bruening are teaming up as additional pre-school teachers, and Caitlin Bucy is an additional third grade teacher. In January, Tyler Hutton will join the staff as seventh/eighth grade teacher. This year, TLS will expand to offer an enrichment program for students who need extra support or extra challenges.

As you can imagine, with enrollment growing, more space is needed.  The “trailer project” on north side of the building is slowly but surely coming along. This trailer will provide more space for all Timothy ministries at Wyatt, including classroom space. We praise God for increased enrollment and a very generous donor to fund the lease of trailers until permanent classrooms can be built!

First day of classes is Tuesday, Aug. 23rd, kicking off with chapel that will introduce this year’s theme, “Making Disciples for Life.” Please join us in praying for our teachers, staff, students, and families as the school year gets going. Thanks for being a part of what is happening at Timothy. Lives are being transformed! Call the school office (816.228.5300 Ext. 8017) to schedule a time to visit this year to see all that God is doing!

Change Doesn’t Mean It’s Not Good Enough:  A Devotion

I’m curled up in my chair, laptop in front of me, thoughts swirling in my mind. Just because something changes doesn’t mean what we did prior wasn’t good enough.

That might seem obvious, but to me, it feels revolutionary. In my life at Timothy, things keep changing and sometimes that feel uncomfortable. I find myself in a place I am uncertain what to do or how to serve.

Isaiah 43:1-9: See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

eNotes came into existence during the early months of the pandemic, when we felt uncomfortable, unsure of what to do or how to worship. We felt disconnected. We needed a way to get the word out, to share information with our estranged Timothy family. eNotes was good to reach inside our family. But Timothy is back, and we need more connection, more opportunities to share the love of Jesus as a team that reaches out to the community God has placed us in.

Timothy Connects is our new platform. We want this to be a place to not only share what is going on inside our Church but also a place to motivate us to connect with other members and bring the people in our lives into a life filled with grace.

As a Church, we need to continue getting better at what we do, growing into the people God created us to be. This means change and trying new things. Timothy Connects is just a first step to get You and others involved in sharing God’s message of grace. That can transform the world, one life at a time.

Don’t Worry, Have No Fear

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:  There’s a natural inclination in human beings to worry. We get ourselves all twisted up in knots because of things we’re experiencing and even hypothetical situations that might not come to pass. But worry is really a form of control. We try to control what is happening around us and we expend a lot of energy in ways that don’t help and actually make us sick. But faith points us to one who can help us to let go of our worry and turn it over to Him.

Senior High 2023 Mission Trip

News from LCMS Missionary Carol Halter Serving in Hong Kong

Timothy received an emailed letter from Carol this week. Below are excerpts from her letter:
“Dear Members of Timothy Lutheran Church,
How very much I do appreciate all your regular, generous support! Thank you for always remembering me and supporting me. This means so much since, as missionaries, we need to find all our own support. Your caring means a lot.

Today I’d like to share about the incredible witness of a Chinese lady who lived in Hong Kong before going home to the Lord. In the days of Chairman Mae Tse-tung, she regularly tore a page from her Bible and sent it to him in China. Even though he may not have received these pages from the Bible, someone who had to read his mail did. God’s Word will not return to Him void, but it will accomplish that for which it was sent.

To witness to her relatives in Taiwan, this Chinese lady hand-copied parts of Luther’s Small Catechism and sent countless copies to them over time. When she was older and hospitalized, she was glad for the opportunity to witness to so many people. She considered the entire hospital ward her “congregation.” What a beautiful example of how she shared the Lord Jesus with others! May we be like her in her enthusiasm for the Lord.

With love in Christ,
Carol”

Consider Support Through Go Fund Me Opportunity

As some of you know, former Timothy pastor Rich Steensma’s daughter Emily and her husband Chris Freeman welcomed a sweet baby girl, Ellie, into the world on July 15. through an unplanned, but overall successful C-section procedure, due to Emily’s unexplained pain and discomfort.

Ellie spent a week in NICU but is home now, happy and healthy. Emily continued to experience extreme pain and discomfort while recovering in the postpartum unit. As symptoms worsened, she was rushed into emergency surgery on July 18, discovering a necrotic and strangulated bowel. Emily then endured three additional surgeries in the following days, spending 12 days in ICU until stable enough to transition to a regular floor on Sat., July 30. She will remain hospitalized for another week or two to monitor her wound management and regain strength to return home.

The Freemans have a lengthy recovery road ahead, including home health, home therapy, and TPN maintenance. All this to say that they could truly use our help. Countless people have reached out to ask what they can do. In addition to prayers, the Freemans would greatly appreciate financial support to help with medical expenses and caring for a newborn as Emily recovers from this life-altering event. Below is a link to an established Go Fund Me account for this purpose. Thank you so much in advance! What a mighty God we serve!

Tomorrow’s Teachers & Preachers

Again this year, the Missouri District continues the Tomorrow’s Teachers and Preachers campaign to promote church- work vocations and bolster scholarship endowment. The goal of this campaign is to take steps to slow and perhaps reverse the trend of a shortage of professional church workers within the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.

The District has selected Sunday, August 28th to highlight the opportunity to support this program. Timothy will support this effort by sending $1,000 from its Church Worker tithe account. If individual members/families in the congregation wish to participate on their own, please send directly to: Missouri District, LCMS, 660 Mason Ridge Center Dr., Suite 100, St. Louis, MO 63141-8557.

May God use these gifts to His glory! Please keep current and future church workers in your prayers and thank God for the many ways He is and will use these leaders to care for His flock.

NYG Celebration

CREATIVE TENSION:  As our youth return from the National Youth Gathering, we celebrate the experiences that they had and the ways that their faith in God has grown. We remind ourselves that Jesus is indeed in all things, that he is a part of our lives not only when we have “mountaintop experiences” like the Gathering, but also when we gather as a family of faith in our local congregation, and when we serve Him where He has placed us as His people.

LIFE after VBS: A Devotion

In the aftermath of VBS and an exciting Celebration Sunday, with no place to run to this morning, I looked at the news. War, fighting and death were the prevalent topics. COVID and monkeypox grabbed the headlines. What a vast contrast to the week of VBS and the mountain-top experience I shared with 170 children. Shutting off the television, I opened my Bible to John 14:27: Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.

God was inviting me to look at Peace. Maybe God was changing the way I defined peace and change where I looked for it. Living in a prosperous country is no guarantee of peace. But God offers a different kind of peace. Lasting. Unshakable. Perfect. When the whole world fractures or my own life shatters, the peace of Jesus is still available because the person of Jesus never changes.

Dear Jesus, thank You for offering a peace so different from what the world gives. Without You, my heart would be perpetually troubled. Fear would be a constant companion. I acknowledge that I can’t control my circumstances or strive for peace. I surrender my life and heart to You. Amen.

Discovery Class Prayer Request

Lord Jesus, bless Your people as we reach out to our community with Your Good News. We ask that You will bless the Word that we will be proclaimed in the approaching adult membership class starting on Wednesday, September 7.  Gather the men and women You have chosen to hear Your saving Gospel. Do not let the evil one hinder them. Prepare this congregation to receive those You will gather around us. Amen.

VBS Celebration

CREATIVE TENSION: Yes, God is great, God is good. We know we are supposed to say that and believe that. But the truth is it’s easy to forget why we confess that. This past week we spent the whole week reminding ourselves how grand, majestic, and monumental our God really is. Now today we join with our VBS kids being reminded WHY He is just that!

Metamorphosis: A Devotion

I can still hear my granddaughter’s excited voice: “Grandma, come look!” Hovering over a bush, I spotted what had drawn her attention: a butterfly with paper-thin wings of pale yellow outlined in inky black. It felt sacred that this butterfly was letting us all lean in so close. This seemed like such a small thing. God used that butterfly to remind me of the miracle and metamorphosis that happens in us when we depend on Him through trials.

A science teacher explained to me that the most surprising part of the life cycle of a butterfly is that she starts as a caterpillar who cocoons in a chrysalis. This is where the metamorphosis or change happens. If you opened the chrysalis in this middle stage, you would see a goopy, unidentifiable mess. But patience will reveal the butterfly pressing through the walls of the chrysalis and emerge with fully-formed legs, eyes, and wings.

The apostle Paul illuminated this idea in a letter to the Corinthians: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” 2 Corinthians 5:17. We are completely transformed by the new life we experience in Christ.

Whenever I see a butterfly, I am reminded that surprising beauty emerges from that stage in our lies when we are squeezed tight, when we experience challenges, when we lean into grief and loss. That is when the metamorphosis of our heart happens.

VBS Wrap -Up

It has been a most excellent week at Vacation Bible School! Over 170 kiddos, along with countless volunteers (who made everything possible!), filled the building with energy and excitement in a MONUMENTAL way, celebrating God’s greatness in our lives.

Each day focused on a theme and corresponding Bible verse. Take a look . . .
Monday:God loves us no matter what (Psalm 89: 2)
Tuesday:God is with you everywhere (Joshua 1: 9b)
Wednesday:God is in charge (Psalm 147: 5)
Thursday:God is stronger than anything (Romans 8: 38)
Friday:God is surprising (Psalm 66: 5)

It was a joyful week to rally around God and His Word. Nor only that, but we raised money and collected items to bless two local ministries. Yes, indeed, Timothy! Lives are being transformed in Christ!

Please join us this Sunday, July 24, for our VBS Celebration as part of the 10am Wyatt service. Then please come to the VBS Reunion on Friday, Aug. 12th, from 5-7pm at RD Mize Campus to see what all these kiddos have learned. All are welcome!

Timothy Lutheran School’s NEW Book Buddies
Literacy Program

Literacy Program

Would you like to Join Us? Seeking Volunteers!

Timothy Lutheran School will intentionally focus on enhancing our students’ literacy skills. We seek volunteers who would like to increase our students’ skills and be part of our program during the 2022-2023 school year.

A commitment of at least one hour per week is requested. Our volunteers will be paired with a student for the year. Specific skills will be identified for fucus during the scheduled literacy enhancement time in collaboration with the classroom teacher. Books, as well as supplemental materials and activities, will be provided to assist with achieving targeted goals.

Literacy is a proven indicator of lifelong success. Our literacy program will tap into the knowledge and wisdom of experienced adults not only to build children’s reading skills but also to be caring role models.

Training for the program will be provided in August for individuals who indicate interest in this program, so a background in education is not required. A background check for school volunteers is required.

If you are interested in participating in this opportunity to serve Timothy Lutheran School students, please contact Mary Beth Self at marybeths@timothylutheranschool.com or call 816.228.5300. Thank you!

Resource Health Thanks Timothy

Timothy received the following thank-you note from Resource Health (formerly Rachel House) last week:
“Dear Timothy Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your generous support of Resource Health to share the hope of Christ to men and women facing an unplanned pregnancy. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we’ve made a strategic shift to intercept abortion-minded individuals before they order abortion pills online. We are working to open our first 24/7 Virtual Center. This center will exist to offer answers and resources to empower the abortion-minded men and women to choose life. We could not fulfill this ministry without the generosity of churches like you.
Rejoicing in Christ,
Resource Health staff”

Maturation

CREATIVE TENSION:  The point of a living thing is to grow. That is why animals do what they do: to grow bigger and stronger and to live their lives. So what is the point of our living faith? Far too often, we allow it to stagnate and simply sit. But Paul makes it clear that we are to mature in Christ. So what does that mean, and what does it look like?

Am I Grateful or Do I Whine? : A Devotion

I was blessed to go to the KC Zoo with seven of my grandkids last Friday. As we pulled to a stop in the parking lot, my oldest whined, “I’m tired.” My response was less than stellar, but it got me thinking. Am I grateful for the times and people God has placed in my life, or do I whine just like the kids do? How do I practice gratitude?

We all need to try again, to use our words nicely, to say sorry and ask for forgiveness. So many people are talking about practicing gratitude. Gratitude changes our posture, and practicing gratitude means we must slow down our minds and our hearts to remember and recognize what we have to be grateful for. It helps us to make mental and emotional shifts throughout the day when it’s not going well, and it grounds us and gives us a better perspective.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6-7

VBS IS HERE!!

It’s time!! It’s like Christmas, vacation and a sporting event all rolled into one! IT’S VBS!! Yes, that is what is inside my head! IT’S MONUMENTAL!!

What do I love about VBS? The transformation of the Church into a kid-friendly, exciting place? THE MUSIC! Loud and exciting! THE SNACKS, FRIENDS, GAMES!! The time we share how much our Savior is active in our lives! The times He shows his Power and the times He picks us up and cares for us.

Join us each day next week, July 18th through 22nd, beginning in individual classrooms at 8:45 and ending with a crazy closing at noon in the sanctuary. Meet the desert characters and watch Pastor Ryan’s and Pastor Rod’s antics as they share the message of the day. Follow us around as we learn about God’s awesome power through the life of Joseph and how salvation through Christ is found, even in the Old Testament. Make a craft each day to take the message home. IT’S REALLY HERE! My favorite time of year! Sharing and Caring with kids. It is truly monumental! I LOVE VBS!

VBS is for older kids also! Students in grades 6-12 are invited to attend VBS Swim Talks next week! Come hang out at the pool, swim, eat, and spend a little time in God’s Word! Take note of the schedule below.  BRING YOUR FRIENDS!!

Check out this year’s VBS Mission Projects

  • Support for Resource Health by donating baby wipes, baby socks, onesies or sleepers, and $5 QT gift cards
  • Monetary donations designated for Agape Pomaja to assist their fundraising efforts to send youth to church camp. Goal is to raise $1,000 by last day of VBS! (Agape Pamoja is a non-profit organization that shows love and community to others by serving multi-faceted needs of refugees from war-town countries residing in KC, such as providing housing assistance, educational support, food, clothing, community involvement, leadership development, and other aid while intentionally doing life together.)

Don’t forget to attend the VBS Celebration next Sunday, July 24, during the Wyatt 10am worship service!  It will be an exciting week at Timothy! Come experience the energy, love, fun, and fellowship!

We praise God that dirt is moving at Wyatt! Just in time to address significant increased enrollment at TLS for the upcoming school year! Timothy’s leadership realizes it’s been a while since communication has been shared with the congregation about the status of the TLS trailer project, but please understand that the Trailer Project Team, led by Gary Flandermeyer, has worked tirelessly and continuously for the past six months to move this project forward, including coordinating the completion of the engineering component, awarding construction and material contracts, and obtaining the construction permit from the City of Blue Springs, all of which was necessary before the start of any construction.

The project includes site preparation and infrastructure systems to support the installation of the first of two 27’x72’ trailer, which is necessary for this upcoming school year. The second similar trailer will be installed next summer. Each trailer will house two 850sq.ft. classrooms with bathrooms.

The construction permit from the City of Blue Springs was received this past Tuesday, July 12th, and the excavation subcontractor mobilized to the site that day to begin layout work. In the coming weeks, you will see construction activity around the Wyatt property for installation of plumbing and electrical feed systems to the first trailer. Currently, the first trailer is expected to be delivered to the site by Aug. 1st. In the coming weeks, watch for periodic updates about progress of this project, and feel free to drive by to see the work as it unfolds. We praise God for His guidance in allowing this important project to move forward and the gift of a gracious Timothy donor to allow it to happen!! Please pray for continued progress of this project.

Timothy’s leadership is also working hard concerning the details for the yard building at Wyatt (Raise the Roof project). As soon as all pertinent information becomes available, leadership will communicate with the congregation. Thanks for your patience and support, and please keep this project in your prayers as well. To God Be the Glory!

Friendship Club Hosts Prom

Timothy’s Friendship Club enjoyed a wonderful prom on June 24 with the theme, All We Need Is Love, and there was a lot of love all around! The Family Life Center was alive with 42 club members, 6 new members, 17 volunteers, and 16 parents/staff. Thanks to Sherry Holt who organized the dinner donated by Timothy ladies and to Terri Simpson for cookies donated by HyVee. Volunteers from the Blue Springs community assisted with painting the parade of hearts for decorations and donated helium tanks for the balloons. A special highlight of the evening was a collection of 225 personal hygiene items as love gifts for Community Services League.

Friendship Club is a huge outreach ministry to young people with different abilities from all over the Greater KC area. Only 2 are Timothy members, with all others from the BS community and neighboring areas such as Buckner, Holden, Independence, Lee’s Summit, Grain Valley, Concordia, KCMO, as well as Olathe and KCK on the Kansas side. Only 4 adult volunteers are Timothy members, with the others coming from all over as well. Friendship Club meets on the 4th Friday of each month in the Family Life Center and always welcome new members to join in the fun! This ministry began on Oct. 23, 2003, and looks forward to celebrating 19 years of giving love, hope, and fun to all the special people in the group. If interested in joining this special ministry, please contact Friendship Club organizer, Diane Knowlton, at dianesingsforjoy@comcast.net.

Fruit of the Spirit: SELF-CONTROL

The world screams self-indulgence to us in every way, shape, or form. It encourages us to look out for number one, to make sure our needs and wants are met no matter what the cost is. But for the Christian, we are called on to look beyond ourselves to the needs of others, to keep our sinful self-centeredness under control for the sake of our neighbors. And this is possible only when our spirits are fed and nourished by God’s Spirit through Word and Sacrament.

One Step at a Time: A Devotion

God doesn’t expect me to be perfect. This is great news because I make a lot of mistakes. I say the wrong thing, I act out of selfishness, I tear down others to build myself up. The Gospel isn’t only for those who have it all together. The Gospel is also for those of us who are afraid, feel unsure, and aren’t courageous in the slightest.

Zacchaeus found that out. Living a life where he was known as a sinner because of his profession, he took the brave step of faith, desperate for a glimpse of Jesus. And Jesus responded. Luke 19:9-10 says, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

This story demonstrates that the good news of the Gospel is for everyone, including outcasts and sinners. Today, what if moving one step closer to Jesus looked like doing something out of the ordinary to see Him more clearly? You never know what that step of faith might lead to. There is salvation, beauty, and healing in this story.

National Youth Gathering Is Here!
July 9-13  Houston, TX
“In All Things”

To our church family, we want to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! It’s been a whirlwind of preparation, fundraising, and anticipation. Now the time has come as 24 youth and 6 adults will hop on a bus at 8am this coming Thursday, July 7th, to head to Houston until we return on the 14th. None of this is anywhere near possible without your love and generosity.

NOW we ask you to pray alongside us. Pray that our kids and adults encounter Jesus, that the Lord deepens the unity we have within our youth, that everyone attending will be kept safe, and that God’s glory will resonate in Houston. We look forward to sharing what God does when we return!

 Hillcrest Transitional Housing Updates

Timothy’s Hillcrest apartment is now home to Jordan, who moved in this past Monday! He has settled into his new home and thanks Timothy for making this possible. He was  previously homeless, living from his  car, and came to Hillcrest with two shirts and couple pairs of pants. The Hillcrest staff also thanks Timothy for making the apartment “look so amazing!” Please keep Jordan in your prayers, and thank you for supporting this ministry!

Speaking of Hillcrest, please mark your calendars for the 22nd Annual Gala & Auction on Wed., Aug. 31, at the North Club Arrowhead Stadium, beginning at 6pm. Reserve your spot at our Timothy table now for just $75 per ticket if purchased through Timothy. Auction items with a minimum value of $50 will be collected through the church office by Aug. 4. To reserve your spot or to ask questions, please contact Nancy Nowiszewski (nancyn@timothylutheran.com).

Sand and Sunsets

It’s been getting so warm, the senior high youth hit the beach . . . kind of! On Tuesday night, 13 senior high kids and 4 adults hit up the sand volleyball court at Young Park for some rowdy action. Not sure who came out on top, but we’re still shaking the sand out of our clothes and hair. A good time was had by all, and Pastor Ryan prayed a blessing over the youth before the night ended. Thank you, Jesus, for our youth and a beautiful night to play!

Ongoing Food Donations

Timothy has collected non-perishable groceries for MANY years, probably one of its longest-running, if not the longest-running, ministries for those in need. The generosity of Timothy’s members to keep this outreach going for so long is much appreciated and one not taken for granted.

The June donations were delivered to Blue Springs Community Services League this week by Bill & Carol Ready. Thank you! The July donations are designated for Hillcrest Transitional Housing.

As food and gas prices have risen recently, all food pantries are seeing more families seeking assistance. Thank you, Timothy, for continuing to keep this ministry as an outreach priority. A box of cereal or a jar of spaghetti sauce helps fill our grocery carts and is so much appreciated.

Fruit of the Spirit: GENTLENESS

When we think of gentleness, we think of being a sweetheart, someone with a light touch, someone who is full of sunshine and goodness. But in reality, what Paul is describing here is humility, a gentleness of spirit. And we struggle with that. We want to toot our own horns. We want to put ourselves at the center of the universe. So God teaches us true gentleness of spirit through His Spirit, taming our wild and self-centered impulses with His grace.

Missing Pieces:  A Devotion

Sunday was Father’s Day, and I was blessed to eat breakfast with my father-in-law, spend the day with the man who dedicated his life to my children and had some quick stop-ins to say Happy Father’s Day to Rod. But it also was a reminder of those missing pieces from my life.

We are all missing pieces. It could be distance. It could be death. It could be disappointment. It reminds me when Jesus told His disciples how He’d soon be leaving them and how the Holy Spirit would come and be with them. In their confusion and loneliness, they waited for that fatherly touch of the Holy Spirit.

We, too, have the Holy Spirit who can reach deep into every hidden place. The Holy Spirit is present, even while we are in pain, and He holds space for our heart, like a hug wrapping us up in the arms of a loving father. He whispers: “I am not a distant God. My love is louder than your loneliness. I am with you—in the emergencies, in the celebrations, and in every mundane moment in-between. I am holding out My hand to you and promise you My presence.”

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139: 7-10

Middle School Summer Fun

High winds may have canceled our kayaking, but it didn’t stop our middle school youth from having a blast last Wednesday as they ate popsicles and chillaxed around the pool. We also made time to create some fleece blankets for Project Linus, an organization that provides blankets for children who are ill or in need. We also dove into God’s Word to talk about remembering God’s faithfulness when our prayers seem to go unanswered. Middle schoolers are urged to contact Pastor Ryan (ryanh@timothylutheran.com) to find out how to help at VBS next month or what else is happening for them and their friends!

Pairs & Spares “Relish” Picnic Fun in FLC

Did the hottest day of the year so far keep Timothy’s Pairs & Spares from enjoying its annual summer picnic?? Certainly not!  Over 40 senior adults gathered Tuesday to enjoy fellowship, fun, food (grilled hot dogs & lots of side dishes & desserts), and fishing in the Family Life Center. Fishing??  Yes, fishing!  Thanks to Ron Riedel for setting up a water-less fishing pond for the picnickers to get their fishing fix, but leave it to men to get fishing lines tangled! Never fear–Pastor Ryan to the rescue! All of Timothy’s senior adults are urged to join this monthly fun, food, and fellowship when it starts again in the fall at 11:30am on the third Tuesdays!

Lutherans for Life Diaper Drive

Thank you, Timothy, for supporting the annual Lutherans for Life Diaper Drive. Thanks to Kaye Gray and LWML Elizabeth Circle for coordinating this effort again. Kaye reports that 763 diapers, 1,398 baby wipes, and some feminine hygiene products were donated, all of which she delivered to Impact Ministries in Blue Springs. Thank you!
