As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
 Money Matters: The Macedonian Model

The Bible has a lot to say about money. It’s one of the most frequently discussed topics in Holy Scripture. For the next three weeks, we’re going to look at the longest passages that the apostle Paul wrote about money, starting with how the Macedonian Christians gave it to God.

Nothing in Common:  A Devotion

Voting week comes with negative ads and intolerance. Sometimes politics can push us apart, and I wonder if both sides can find common ground.

When we’re at odds with family, friends, co-workers, or neighbors, finding one thing in common can truly change the tone of a conversation and even the direction of the relationship. It can give us a pathway back to one another, refreshing our affection and even respect for one another.

In Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth, he says he is “all things to all people” I Corinthians 9:22. The context of this statement is that he’s defending his lifestyle choices and the sacrifice of some of his rights to the Corinthians, explaining that each of these decisions has been an effort to connect with people who need the good news of Jesus. He attempts to be as least offensive as possible to each person he hopes to help. The New Living Translation puts it exactly in those words! I try find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. I Corinthians 9:22.

It’s true that some people grow apart and some relationships end. But for the ones that still have common ground somewhere underneath the rubble of conflict and pain, healing can take place and good can be accomplished. We, like Paul, can stand on our common ground in Christ.

Youth Sunday 2022

Timothy’s middle schoolers stepped up to lead worship last Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Wyatt 10am service. From reading Scripture lessons, greeting worshipers, assisting with altar guild tasks, and even leading some of the music in worship, it was a great opportunity for our youth to reflect the servant life Jesus calls us to! The Next Generation is on the move!

Thanksgiving Eve Service

Once again, we will gather to praise God and give thanks for His bountiful blessings at the annual Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wed., Nov. 23, at 5:30pm, in the RD Mize sanctuary. Holy Communion will be celebrated. Following Timothy’s tradition at this service, the offering will be designated for Timothy’s Emergency Assistance Fund which provides funds for those in need throughout the coming year. Over the past two years, Timothy has assisted approximately 85 families with vouchers for gasoline, lodging, utilities, and meals/groceries. Thank you for your generous support!

Stepping Up Financially

Timothy’s leadership continues to celebrate the numerous examples of ministries that Transform Lives through Christ and appreciates the congregation’s support. While offering time and talents is immeasurably valuable, these ministries also require financial resources to support salaries and expenses. A decrease in general contributions and First Fruits, combined with current inflation we all experience in our personal budgets, has impacted Timothy’s cash flow.

If you were not in worship last Sunday, stop by the Information Center at either campus to pick up a Step-Up Chart for the first nine months of 2022. As you study the chart, we pray that you consider “stepping up” your financial support of the general operating fund for the remainder of 2022 and into the new year. In addition, major projects to maintain, repair, or replace items such as a portion of the Wyatt driveway and HVAC units at Wyatt are also impacting Timothy’s resources.

We realize inflation is impacting you and your family as much as it is impacting your Timothy family, but we ask that you prayerfully consider taking a step up in your giving to maintain God’s House and support its wonderful ministries seeking to impact lives and bring people closer to Jesus. Thank you!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
 The Endgame

What is it you’re trying to accomplish? What is the endgame? That is something we often have to stop and ask ourselves as we go about our business. If everything goes according to our plans, what do we think will be the end result? God gives us a sneak peek of His endgame in the reading from Revelation. When the Church goes out to share the Gospel, the end result is a great multitude praising Him for all eternity. And today, we pause to remember those who have taken their place in that uncountable crowd and give thanks for them reaching their reward.

Could Fear Be an Invitation to Trust?   A Devotion

Today I am reminded of a scene from a movie. It’s fall in a large city park—kids are playing, old men are studying chess boards, and a small crowd is surrounding a cardboard box. There sits the con artist moving cups as fast as he can, swiping money from customers who think they know which cup the ball is under. It’s a shell game. The shell game is all about keeping your eye on the ball, but the game is already rigged and each of his customers loses the moment they put down their money.

God doesn’t have a trick up His sleeve. He keeps His promises, and His blessings are real. We might have a tendency to think that we’re missing something, that we have to play this game of life just right, or that it’s rigged. You might think God is holding out on you, that you actually can’t count on what He’s promised for your life, as if the blessings He has for you and me are part of a game that we’re not playing by the rules.

God is not playing a shell game with your life. You don’t have to think it’s a gamble to trust Him that the blessings will come. God doesn’t play games with how He moves in your life. But God tell us in Psalm 84: 11-12 that “The Lord grants favor and honor; he does not withhold the good from those who live with integrity. Happy is the person who trusts in you.” God doesn’t require you to be perfect. He sent Jesus to make you blameless; He cleansed you so you can happily trust Him and His ways and timing. God may not grant every answer to your prayers that you want or do things the way you see fit, but He will give the ultimate good thing in eternal life with Him—now and forever, with blessings and miracles along the way.

Youth Sunday

This Sunday, Nov. 6, is Youth Sunday at Timothy’s Wyatt service. Worshipers will be led by youth in some worship duties normally carried out by adults, such as altar guild, sound booth techs, ushers, communion assistants, readers, singers, and musicians. We praise God for their servant hearts in sharing their talents!

Pray for Lutherans for Life

We continue to pray for ministries we support through Timothy’s monthly/annual tithe. In the month of November, we encourage you to pray for Lutherans for Life. Their mission is to equip Lutherans and their neighbors to be Gospel-motivated voices for life with a vision that every Lutheran, both individually and in community, is upholding the God-given value of human life and influencing society to do the same.

Lutherans for Life believes that the Church is compelled by God’s Word to speak and at on behalf of those who are vulnerable and defenseless. The crisis of our times is the repudiation of biblical truth manifested in the wanton destruction of innocent human life through legalized abortion-on-demand and the growing threat to the lives of others through legalized assisted suicide and euthanasia. Lutherans for Life will strive to give a Gospel-motivated witness to the Church and society on these and other related issues, such as chastity, post-abortion healing, and family living. They will call God’s people to compassionate action and foster life-affirming alternatives for those facing difficult situations.

This weekend in worship you will receive a postcard with suggested prayers. Please keep Lutherans for Life and those they represent in your prayers.

Holiday Brown Grocery Sack Ministry

For many years, Timothy has generously provided food items for a holiday meal to those in need. Brown grocery sacks with attached food list can be picked up in the grocery cart in lobby at either campus. Filled sacks can be returned to the grocery carts any Sunday in November. They will be delivered to Jesu el Buen Pastor (the Lutheran Church of Jesus the Good Shepherd) in downtown KC. The need is great, and we thank you for assisting in feeding the hungry.

Youth Servant Event

Timothy’s youth and families are heading down to Our Redeemer Lutheran in KC on Sunday, Nov. 20, 1:30-5:30pm, to provide a community Thanksgiving meal and message of God’s love. We could use your support in the form of praying for our event, preparing a side dish for the meal, and perhaps even joining us (but there are limited spots due to allotted space), so please contact Pastor Ryan (ryanh@timothylutheran.com) if you’d like to support this event in some way.

Youth Video Scavenger Hunt

Calling all youth! Oh, it’s on! Junior and senior high youth had a crazy time last year at the Video Scavenger Hunt, so it back by popular demand. Join us Sat., Nov. 19, as we race against other teams collecting items for Resource Health and take photos and videos of all kinds of shenanigans along the way. Try to knock out as many items as you can before returning to church and see if your team can rack up the most points TO WIN THE TROPHY! RSVP needed by Nov. 16 to plan for drivers. If any parents are willing to drive, please contact Pastor Ryan (ryanh@timothylutheran.com).

Product Labels for TLS

Did you know that Timothy Lutheran School still collects various product labels? UPC codes from Best Choice labels and Clearly by Best Choice (newer brand of organic & gluten-free items) may be clipped and saved for TLS and dropped off at the Information Center at each campus. The funds collected from these labels benefit TLS Scholarship Fund. Contact Lois Warren (816.427.5168) with questions about Best Choice and Clearly labels. Thank you!
TLS also gets credit for collecting Box Tops labels, but that program now uses the Box Top for Education app on your phone. Buy participating products and use the Box Top app to scan your store receipt within 14 days of your purchase. The app identifies eligible products, and earnings are credited online to TLS. Even if you’re shopping online or participating in grocery pickup, you can still submit your digital or email receipt with the Box Tops app and earn. TLS receives a check twice a year! See a list of participating products at BTFE.COM/PRODUCTS. Box Tops earnings really add up, and the more people who participate, the bigger the impact. Over the years, TLS has received a total of $10,860.80!
Contact Sandy Logan, Box Tops for Education Coordinator, at slogan1954@gmail.com or 816.668.8213 if you have questions about the Box Tops program. Thank you!

2022 First Fruits contributions total $97,500.59, as of Oct. 30th. Thank you!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
 The Truth That Frees

We often wind up prisoners of so many things: debt, past decisions, lies that others tell us or we tell ourselves. But Jesus comes to set us free from the prisons we’re trapped in through Himself. He is the truth that sets us free, something we remember and celebrate on Reformation Sunday.

God Doesn’t Play Games: A Devotion

Today I am reminded of a scene from a movie. It’s fall in a large city park—kids are playing, old men are studying chess boards, and a small crowd is surrounding a cardboard box.

Service of Prayer

In our journey together as brothers and sisters in Christ, we long to gather in our pursuit to pray without ceasing. God desires that we continue to seek Him in all things and that our eyes are opened to see where Jesus is already working and leading. We invite you to join us in a Service of Prayer and God’s Word on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 7:30-8pm, in the sanctuary at RD Mize, as we meet to pray for the future of Timothy into the Next Generation. Transforming Lives through Christ is much more than a slogan . . it’s an adventure in fulfilling the Great Commission of going into the world and sharing the love of Jesus with those whom God has placed in our lives.

Let’s devote ourselves to God’s Word as we continue to gather in prayer. God has set before us an example to love and serve our neighbors, and it’s always centered in prayer. We thank and praise God for all that He has done and continues to do for us as we serve together in the body of Christ as a church family. We continue to pray, “Lord, teach us how to pray.”

Children’s Harvest Party

Last Friday, Oct. 21, over 100 kiddos plus family member packed the Wyatt Campus for our 2nd Annual Church/School Harvest Party. The kids enjoyed a wide variety of games, some pizza, music, and, of course, prizes. It was a great night of parents connecting and kiddos playing.

Falloween

Last Saturday, Oct. 22, the RD Mize Campus became a great night of fall fun for 18 junior and senior high kiddos! We had some stellar carved pumpkins and created our own superhero masks. The kids had fun running around the building with nerf guns, followed by a discussion about the masks we wear to cover what’s really going on inside. The evening wrapped up with some delicious s’mores. It was a great time to grow in Christ with each other.

Youth Sunday

Timothy is excited to designate Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Wyatt Campus as Youth Sunday. We praise God for their servant hearts to share their talents!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
For Us and With Us (LWML Sunday)

“For Us and With Us” is the theme for LWML Sunday 2022 and is based on Paul’s letter to the Romans. Paul tells us that each of us has faced challenges and circumstances greater than our own strength (Romans 8:31–39). But, in Christ, who is for us and with us, we are already more than conquerors through Him who loved us. This celebratory LWML Sunday will encourage all hearers of the victory which is already ours through Baptism, so we might live each day confidently trusting in Christ.

Make Space for Sadness: A Devotion

We just returned from out East to visit family, see the Washington monuments, and enjoy the beautiful fall colors. It was a wonderful trip filled with awe and sadness. You see, we also shared a prayer shawl and a time of sadness, as my brother-in-law’s mother has been diagnosed with cancer, and memories of people I have lost came flooding back.

Grief comes out in the most unexpected ways. Just when we think we are done with the unwanted company of sadness, we cry at a stoplight or when a random song comes on. But grief is not a wild horse to be tamed. Grief is a gift. It marks how much our hearts loved another.

Grief is not meant to control or to be controlled by us. The invitation is to be with Jesus in our sadness however long necessary. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” Matthew 5: 4. We can take great comfort in knowing God cares for the brokenhearted. God makes space for our sadness. This is the way of love.

LWML Sunday

Timothy’s annual observance of LWML Sunday will be celebrated this Sunday at both campuses.
This year’s theme of “For Us and With Us” (Romans 8: 31-39) will be shared in the sermon message and at the display tables in the lobbies. Be sure to stop by to learn about LWML and how you can participate in proclaiming its mission to joyfully share Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving.

You can also drop off donations of twin comforters for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace ministry as Timothy’s LWML set a goal of collecting 80 comforters to celebrate the national LWML’s 80th anniversary. (Please refer to last week’s issue to read more about the Sleep in Heavenly Peace ministry.)

Be sure to stop by the donut/bagel/coffee tables (FLC at RD Mize & 4 G’s at Wyatt) to pick up your normal treat that will hold a LWML toothpick topper!

Christmas Giving Trees

Now is the time to offer names of individuals or families who may need some extra assistance at Christmas. If you know of an individual or family from our congregation or school who would be a candidate for our Giving Tree ministry, please submit their name(s), address and phone number in a sealed envelope and place in Sandy Gregory’s mailbox in the RD Mize Communication Center or contact her at 816.228.5300 Ext. 8042 or sandyg@timothylutheran.com. Deadline to submit names is Oct. 30 for the team to coordinate all necessary steps for a successful 2022 Giving Tree ministry.

A Giving Tree will be displayed at each campus starting Wed., Nov. 23rd, for members to choose tags and return the suggested gifts on Sun., Dec. 11, for Timothy’s annual Journey to the Manger. Gifts will be distributed to individuals/families suggested by Timothy families, Community Services League, Immanuel Lutheran in KC, and Our Redeemer Lutheran in KC. Thank you for your generous support in the past. We look forward to this year’s gifts of love.

Timothy’s Friendship Club Celebrates 19 Years

It was 19 years ago when Timothy started a “Teen Club” to reach out to kids with different abilities. Over the years, hundreds of lives have been transformed through lots of love, dinners, fellowship, and special guests. The gatherings at RD Mize on the fourth Fridays now are known as Friendship Club. Special thanks to Diane Knowlton for her tireless efforts over the past 19 years to lead this ministry.

Thanks to anyone who has ever volunteered time, talents, and treasures for the success of Teen Club/Friendship Club. The congregation is encouraged to stop by on Friday, Oct. 28, from 5:30-8:15pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. You’ll enjoy tacos for dinner and special entertainment of music and dancing. We praise God for this special ministry!

Abundant Life Giving Society Thanks Timothy

Timothy recently received a certificate from the Lutherans for Life Abundant Life Giving Society for our Gospel-motivated gift For Life and especially for our generous gifts in support of the Lutherans for Life message, mission, and ministry advocating the sanctity of life.

An excerpt from the accompanying letter expands on their appreciation: “Your fellowship has helped inspire our 2022 theme, “God Chose You.” And we rejoice that God chose you for us and for this. Your investment is speaking truth that changes hearts and showing love that saves lives. Because of your courage and your compassion, our Lord Jesus is reaching the culture with the Gospel of God’s choice: ‘You did not choose me, but I chose you.’ (John 15:16) Communities across the country are haring how every life is gift and privilege.”

Thanksgiving Grocery Bag Ministry

Next Sunday, Oct. 30th, is the first day to pick up a brown grocery sack from the grocery cart at either campus to fill with foods for families in the inner city to add to their holiday meals. A food list will be affixed to each sack. The filled sacks may be returned any time before Nov. 27th. Thank you for your support!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
Never Give Up!

God calls us to constant prayer. But that can be difficult, especially when it seems like God isn’t listening or He isn’t answering. Persistence in prayer can be a challenge, but God gives us the strength to continue to call on him, to pray continually, to unleash the power of prayer in our lives so that He may continue to work in us when we need it most.

In a World of Instant Gratification, God Offers Us Patience: A Devotion

I’ve noticed this impatience show up in many areas of my life. Why wait for five or seven business days when I can get my packages with two-day shipping instead? Why begin watching a television show when it first premiers, waiting a whole week for a new episode, when after a few months I can binge the whole thing on a streaming service? And speaking of streaming, why isn’t the latest season of my favorite show available yet?

Whether we’re talking about something inconsequential like a television show or something significant like healing or rescue from a serious situation, most of us tend to quickly turn to frustration or even despair when we don’t get the answer, the results, or the relief we desire. In a society focused on immediate gratification, we forget the virtue of patience. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

Of course, if we’re willing, we don’t have to look far to see how many good things come only after waiting. Flowers bloom in the spring, but not until they’re good and ready. We can check on that tomato fruit any faster. If we’re patient, though, we might learn to enjoy the process—the watering, the watching, even the waiting for the payoff in the end.

The same is true of God and His plans. We can’t make Him move any faster. But if we can learn to be still and wait for the Lord, eventually we will see Him answer our prayers, and in the interim, we will discover so much about ourselves and about God. We can grow closer to God in those seasons of waiting and see our faith deepen as we rely on Him and His good plans.

Hillcrest Transitional Housing Updates

Timothy’s Hillcrest Team, represented by Dan & Pam Sbisa and Pam Lund, celebrated with Timothy’s recent graduate, Jordan Bolding, pictured with Hillcrest Case Manager Brittany Gibbs, at the Hillcrest Graduation last Sunday.

Several inspiring testimonies about their Hillcrest experience were shared by the graduates. Jordan shared that he always had too much pride to ask for help. He learned at Hillcrest that sometimes a little help is needed to “get my life back on track,” so he advised future residents to not be afraid to ask for help. Another graduate shared that she saved $12,000 while in the Hillcrest program, more money than she’s ever had and knows now that she has the ability to budget her money and care for her kids. She is especially thankful she now has a “family of support” (the Hillcrest family) if she needs help in the future. Another graduate shared that she started her dream job of working as a paraprofessional for special needs’ students at an area school district while in the Hillcrest program and that nothing will hold her back in the future, thanks to Hillcrest. We praise God that Timothy sponsors an apartment at Timothy to be a part of these kinds of success stories!

Timothy’s new resident, Dominia, moved in last Friday. A mother of four and recently separated from her husband, she appreciates her parents in Mexico, MO, who are caring for her children at the present time. Dominia is working two jobs and is excited to be part of the Hillcrest community. She looks forward to putting in the necessary work and commitment to getting her life back on track during her stay at Hillcrest. Please keep Dominia in your prayers. Notes of encouragement from the congregation are encouraged at the following address:

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML)

When you arrive at church next Sunday, you will probably notice lots of purple—because Sunday,
October 23rd, is LWML Sunday at Timothy! Pastor Ryan will fill our souls as he incorporates this year’s
theme, “For Us and With Us” (Romans 8: 31-39) in his message.

Please stop by the displays at each campus to learn about LWML and how you can become its
mission to joyfully proclaim Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving.
You can also enjoy donuts and bagels in the Family Life Center or 4 G’s at Wyatt that will be adorned with small LWML toothpick toppers. Be sure to take home the bulletin insert for additional information and names of whom to contact.

Currently, the national LWML organization is celebrating its 80th Anniversary, and Timothy is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. In celebration of these milestones, Timothy’s LWML Society invites the congregation to participate in a servant project of collecting 80 twin comforters for “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.” This non-profit organization manufactures a free bed for children, ages 3-17, who need one because its mission is “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” The local Jackson County chapter has a waiting list of 200 kids needing a bed.

Each donation from Sleep in Heavenly Peace includes a bed, new mattress, new pillow, and new bedding. Timothy’s LWML is collecting new bedding (twin comforters) for this worthwhile project. Are you able to contribute a twin comforter toward our goal of 80? Please bring to church next Sunday or contact Society President Susan Ready (sready2@comcast.net or 816.328.2201 with questions. Thank you!

Reaching Out to Moms with Small Children
(Birth through High School)

Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle is planning a “mom’s event”, and all ladies with kids from birth through high school are invited! Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 12, 9-11am, in the Music Room at Wyatt Campus.

You will be treated to some yummy breakfast items and participate in fun games, crafts, and a quick Bible study. It will be a morning of fun and fellowship! Every year as the holidays approach, Timothy’s care ministries offer special help to those who are hurting. The “Surviving the Holidays” special session will be Thursday, Nov. 3, 6:30-8pm in Fireplace Room at RD Mize. All who grieve the loss of a loved one at any time in their lives are encouraged to attend and bring family and friends. (Information regarding the DivorceCare “Surviving the Holidays” will be coming soon.)

This might be the first, second, third or more holiday season after the loss of your loved one(s). This special session may help you through the tough emotions the holiday season brings to you. Due to the nature of Thanksgiving and Christmas, with its focus on family, annual traditions, expectations, social events, and “cheer,” the emotions can blindside you. You can lessen the impact by knowing what to expect and being prepared.

Practical tools from the GriefShare “Surviving the Holidays” session will enable you to not only survive the holidays, but also face them with some peace and assurance.

Contact Pam Lund (pal42day@gmail.com) with questions and to register. You can also register on Timothy’s church app (click on Events) or the church website (www.timothylutheran.com) or call the church office (816.228.5300).

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Pray As We Go”

As Paul and Barnabas were getting ready to go on their first missionary journey, they were dedicated to the task through prayer. Just as they were sent out to share the Gospel, we, too, are sent out to share the Good News of what God has done for all people through Christ. And so we also dedicate ourselves through prayer, asking God to give us the right words, the right moments, and the right opportunities to share our faith as we go.

Apprehensive and Uncertain: A Devotion

God has blessed me with a full life. I look back over the various stages of toddlers to teens to adult children and find myself with a quiet house. Some people look forward to their empty nest years, some dread them. I enjoyed my children, and it’s nice they’re older and independent after years of being responsible for babies and toddlers.

I realize how God continues to place new challenges in my path. I see a future of quieter days in which I thrive. I feel the Lord’s assurance that our home will not become lonely, but a place where I can flourish. It transformed my thinking. Slow, quiet days no longer feel empty but full of promise.

We often approach new life stages and paths we haven’t walked with apprehension and uncertainty, but we shouldn’t be afraid: God has a plan for us. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Do we resist areas that might be part of our calling because we feel uncomfortable, or we don’t know if we will excel? I do. But this approach implies the strength for the journey begins and ends with us, and that’s not how God works. Where He calls us to go, where He invites us to try, where He leads us to trust, God will provide what we need to thrive.

Prayer Breakfast Wrap-Up

Over 100 folks gathered last Saturday, Oct. 1st, in Timothy’s Family Life Center at RD Mize for our Pray Without Ceasing breakfast. There was great fellowship filled with laughter, a great meal catered by HyVee, and discussion about what God is up to in this thing called prayer.

We then appreciated time to pray together as Pastor Ryan led us through some different and unique ways to call upon the Lord. Thanks to the GROW and GATHER Commission members for tending to all the details, to Ben Ryan and Thrivent for covering cost of the meal, to TLS students for providing table artwork and scripture verses, and to Kelly Twenter for serving as master of ceremonies. What an amazing morning as we continue to let God teach us to pray!

Prayer Walks

We invite you to join us this coming week (Oct. 9-15) for one or more prayer walks. As part of our Pray Without Ceasing series, we are hosting 5 Prayer Walks around Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit.

What is a prayer walk? It’s not tricky. You walk, and as you walk you pray for what you see or what’s on your heart, or you simply support others as they lift prayers up. If the weather is bad enough, a prayer walk will be rescheduled (except the indoor one).

  • Oct. 9th, 4pm:  Lake Remembrance. Meet Gary & Julie Storck at the parking lot of NE Jefferson by the dam.
  • Oct. 11th, 11:15am:  Timothy’s Sanctuary at RD Mize. This one is available for those who cannot walk but want a chance to gather and pray. Meet Pastor Ryan in the sanctuary.
  • Oct. 11th, 5pm:  Charles David Hartman Memorial Park, Lee’s Summit. Meet Steve Schild at the playground area.
  • Oct. 12th, 5pm:  St. Mary’s Medical Center Walking Trail. Meet Pastor Rod on the medical center side of the walking trail.
  • Oct. 13th, 4pm:  Lake Tapawingo. Meet Buddy Young at Lake Tapawingo Clubhouse, off Dockside Dr. Enter Lake Tapawingo from Woods Chapel Road.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Pray As We Give”

Jesus once prayed before He sacrificed Himself for us. The Christian life is one of sacrifice, of giving of oneself. But before we do so, we dedicate what we give to God in prayer. Just as Paul once gave up his freedom to serve God, we ask ourselves what we are willing to dedicate to Him in prayer for His service.

Put on Your Boots, Show Up, and Care for Someone: A Devotion

There are times when we feel like we are spinning wheels in mud. There’s no clear way forward, and reversing seems foolish, and you’re going absolutely nowhere. What you need is someone to show you that there’s a world outside of these spinning wheels. That’s what a friend did for me. She watched my situation for a moment and then said to me, “OK, that’s enough. I’m here, and we’re together.”

I’m sure we’ve all had someone walk through a season of want and not known what to say to them, so I’d like to spell it out for you: put on your boots and go to them. Maybe it’s making a meal or offering a plane ticket. Maybe it’s going on a walk or caring for their children. Whatever it is, it will be helpful.

In Exodus 17, the people of Israel were facing their first battle after being freed from the Egyptians. Th people of Israel were hardly organized at this point. And they were certainly outnumbered. They were a new nation who had been raised in slavery, and they did not have much to offer, but they did have the sovereign power of God with them. “Whenever Moses help up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.” (Exodus 17: 11).

As long as Moses held up that staff—that reminder of whom they belonged to—the Israelites won the battle. But his arms got tired because he was a human person with limits. “But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur help up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun” (v. 12).

Moses’ brother and friend showed up and they held his arms. And this was how the battle was won. Remember, the Lord doesn’t leave us to do these alone. He gives us the gift of one another.

Pray Without Ceasing

TOMORROW, Sat., Oct. 1, 8:30-10:30am is the Prayer Breakfast in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. We invite you to “gather” with us again to share in this opportunity as Pastor Ryan goes deeper into how we can pray. We are excited just to be with you all and to continue growing in this gift called prayer. Come be a part of God’s transformational work in our lives!

Pray as we give. What does that mean? We all know that Jesus calls us to love our neighbors and to live lives of generosity, but this week we contemplate how we pray as we do these things. At worship on Sunday, you will receive another postcard Lutheran Church in Haiti, one of the organizations supported by Timothy’s tithe.

We ask you to join us through October as we pray for the Lutheran churches in Haiti, for their members, that God would use them to transform lives through Christ. When you take the postcard home, place it somewhere you will see it each week and pray as you give.

Don’t forget about the Upcoming Prayer Walks! During next week (Oct. 9-15), as part of our Pray Without Ceasing series, we encourage you to join us for one or more of our Prayer Walks in the area on different days.
What is a Prayer Walk? It’s not tricky! You walk, and as you walk you pray for what you see or what’s on your heart, or you simply support others as they lift up prayers.

Here are the dates and locations:

  • Sunday, Oct. 9th, at 4pm:              Remembrance Lake
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11th, at 11:15am:  Timothy Sanctuary, RD Mize (available for those who cannot walk but want a chance to gather and pray)
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11th, at 5pm:          Charles David Hartman Memorial Park (Lee’s Summit)
  • Wednesday, Oct. 12th, at 5pm:  St. Mary’s Walking Trail
  • Thursday, Oct. 13th, at 4pm:         Liberty Landing (Lake Tapawingo)

Youth Ministry Update

Last Sunday, 21 young people from Timothy took ice cream to bless the residents of Hillcrest Transitional Housing in Lee’s Summit. It was an incredible evening of sharing stories, laughing, eat ice cream (with gummy bears and sprinkles) and playing with the kids.

Our hearts were touched, and I believe many of theirs were, too! Thank you, Jesus, that through this event, we get to experience and see how You transform lives!

Hillcrest Transitional Housing Update

Jordan, the current resident in Timothy’s Hillcrest apartment, will soon graduate from the Hillcrest program. We praise God for the opportunity to support someone working hard to improve his life! He is moving to an apartment tomorrow and starting a new job, so he reports that the Hillcrest experience and lessons learned have helped him tremendously. He thanks the congregation for this support!

Timothy’s Hillcrest Team Leaders, Dan & Pam Sbisa, have arranged for a graduation party for Jordan on Sunday, Oct. 9th.  If you would like to send a congratulatory card/note to Jordan please address it to Hillcrest Transitional Housing, 512 SW Mission Rd, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063 ATTN:  Jordan.

Please continue to pray for Jordan and all Hillcrest residents as they learn how to manage their lives and live on their own.

Children’s Ministry Update

Timothy is urged to check out the “Follow Me” canvas painting hanging above the credenza in the RD Mize lobby!  You can’t miss it—both for its creativity and outstanding craftsmanship of spreading the Gospel!

The footprints are those of Timothy kids who attended the first Wednesday CrossWalk session a few weeks ago. They enjoyed dipping their feet in the paint, walking across the canvas, and washing their feet in a tub at the end of the maze. But, yes, they went  home with paint residue on the bottom of their feet!

Thank you to Pastor Ryan, Clancy Heisel, Miriam Lindemann, and CrossWalk staff for guiding the students through this fun activity to bring home Jesus’ command to “Follow Me!”  (Matt. 4:19)

TLS Book Fair

The fall book fair at Timothy Lutheran School is approaching quickly! Timothy is urged to stop by the fair in the TLS lobby from October 9th-14th. It will be a great time to add to your home library, explore new titles, check out classroom wish lists, and even shop for some Christmas ideas!

The fair will be open before and after school (Oct. 10-14), during Donuts with Dad (Oct. 12), and before and after the 10am worship service on Oct. 9. Additionally, an online option is available: www.scholastic.com/bf/tls/rams Thanks for your support!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Pray As We Gather”

We often think of prayer as an individualistic thing, something that we do on our own. But God makes it clear time and time again that prayer is something that we do together. Prayers tie us together as God’s people and always have. So as we gather together, we gather for prayer so that, as the body of Christ, we may be closer knit together as His people.

Cheer Each Other On:  A Devotion

I traveled to Michigan to see my brother and his family. We sat around the table, and Mom shared memories with my two nephews, their pregnant wife and soon-to-be-engaged girlfriend. History and wisdom mixed together with laughter.

Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Proverbs 8: 10-11

We are always in need of wisdom—wisdom to say and do the right things at the right time. We need wisdom for when to speak and when to pause, stay quiet, listen, and consider. We need wisdom to choose between what’s best, to know how to walk with integrity in our workplaces, in our parenting, and in our friendships. We need wisdom to love others well, to treat others with kindness, to know how to live as Jesus did.

James 1:5 assures that if we ask for wisdom from God, He will give it to us generously. Let’s come before God and ask Him for the wisdom we need—that only He can give.

Pray Without Ceasing

We are in full swing of our “Pray Without Ceasing” journey. As Week 3 rolls in, we want to prep you for our weekly focus and invite you to an amazing opportunity this coming week.  The focus of this Sunday’s sermon is “Pray As We Gather.” Sunday worship is the time when the church most consistently “gathers,” so we have designed a worship service revolving a little more specifically around prayer. You will hear an abundance of prayers, all intended to draw us into praying without ceasing as we gather as the Church!

Then, NEXT SATURDAY, October 1st, at 8:30am, in the Family Life Center at RD Mize, we invite you to “gather” with us again to share in our Prayer Breakfast as Pastor Ryan goes deeper into how we can pray. We are excited just to be with you all and to continue growing in this gift called prayer. Come be a part of God’s transformational work in our lives! This catered breakfast is FREE! Register here:  Prayer Breakfast

Upcoming Prayer Walks:  During the week of October 9-15, as part of our Pray Without Ceasing series, we encourage you to join us for one or more of our Prayer Walks around Blue Springs on different days. What is a Prayer Walk? It’s not tricky! You walk, and as you walk you pray for what you see or what’s on your heart, or you simply support others as they lift up prayers.

Here are the dates and locations:

  • Sunday, Oct. 9th, at 4pm:  Remembrance Lake
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11th, at 11:15am:  Timothy Sanctuary, RD Mize (this one is available for those who cannot walk but want a chance to gather and pray)
  • Wednesday, Oct. 12th, at 5pm:  St. Mary’s Walking Trail
  • Thursday, Oct. 13th, at 4pm:  Liberty Landing (Lake Tapawingo)

So mark your calendars and watch for more details next week!

Timmy Burger Booth Follow-Up

THANK YOU, TIMOTHY, for supporting the Festival Committee’s 40th Annual Timmy Burger booth last weekend at the Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest! What a tremendous weekend for reaching into the community and growing in fellowship with each other! The fellowship, smiles, and weather made for tremendous success! If you purchased a burger, you were part of the effort that saw a sell-out by 11am Sunday. This would not have been possible if not for Timothy’s generous family. To God Be All the Glory!

Timothy also thanks its fully committed Festival Committee for every bit of the year-round planning, not to mention the actual implementation of this well-oiled machine during the Fall Fun Fest, that results in funding for much-needed capital improvements not funded through the church budget (after a 10% tithe is designated for a mission emphasis). The next time you see any of the following people, please thank them: Chris & Connie Hruska, Tary Krahenbuhl, Louie & Kathy Wilbers, Erick & Becky Blatt, Rod & Becky Barnett, Chris & Viv Bradshaw, Ron & Laurie Herz, Marty Boison, Kris Burns, Randy & Nancy Lindemann, Shirley Meineka, Rick Little, Mitch & Val Leakey, Sherry Holt, Karena Lorek, Gordon Thompson, and Connie Hilden.

JourneyMen Dinner & Bible Study

Timothy’s JourneyMen team will present Take the Lead “Fear Not” on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 6:30-8:30pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize.  All men 18 & older are invited to join their Christian brothers for fellowship, studying God’s Word, music, and . . .  (wait for it!) . . . Ben Ryan’s World-Famous Barbeque (NO COST!!)

Defeat your fears, whatever they are, by trusting in Christ. As He said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world.”

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Pray as We Grow”

Like all parts of our faith life, we can definitely grow in prayer. But like all things in our journey, this is not something that is completely up to us. Instead, this is something that we experience when we partner with God for our continued growth. And we are reassured that, even when we don’t get it right, God understands and God intervenes for us, making up for where we lack.

Cheer Each Other On:  A Devotion

I see her email: “Could you read something I wrote? I don’t know if it’s any good, but I wanted to see if you could just take a look and tell me what you think.” Her email was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. She shared how she respected my opinion. I was honored to be entrusted with a first read of her writing, and I agreed to take a look. Later, we discussed her gift with words, and she was filled with delight. Her joy was my joy.

First Corinthians 12: 26 says, “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.” And Romans 12: 15 simply says, “Be happy with those who are happy.”

In Christ, we are interdependent on one another. Because we are made for community and placed in community, we cannot separate our grief or our joy from that of others. We can cheer each other on, and in doing so we participate in the joy that God has for us all.

Pray Without Ceasing?

Did you set a reminder to pray at various times each day? Is it possible to really pray without ceasing?
We aren’t just asking you to come and listen, but to commit to growing in prayer, living in prayer, and learning about prayer. Watch for this Sunday’s bulletin insert and daily email messages next week as we grow together in prayer.

More details will be available soon about various activities:  prayer walk, prayer breakfast, immersive prayer path, movie focused on prayer, and much more!   You can sign up now for the October 1st Prayer Breakfast in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. Please RSVP at https://timothylutheran.com/events/ This will be an awesome morning to grow together in different ways to pray. Watch for details about other events during the next few months!

Children & Youth Update

The Lord’s house was full last Wednesday as our children & youth ministries kicked off to continue our pursuit of TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH CHRIST.

Senior High Revolution started a four-week study of diving into the blessings of staying connected with the Lord and sometimes disconnecting from our fast-paced, technology-driven lives.

Our CrossWalk kiddos also enjoyed an adventurous night talking about what it means to follow Jesus. Approximately 30 kids joined us for study, an obstacle course, and an art project that we can’t wait to share with everybody. Give thanks with us for the volunteers and kiddos that attended and pray that the Holy Spirit continues transforming our young ones’ lives! God Is Good!

There is lots of room for more kids in all programs, so please join us at RD Mize on Wednesdays and bring your friends!

Middle Schoolers Enjoy Minute-to-Win-It Night

Timothy’s middle school Minute-to-Win-It Night last Saturday had 11 youth and one pastor square off to conquer some wacky games before 60 seconds expired! Plenty of laughs and messes followed.

Midway through the evening, time was called for eating to fill our bellies and diving into God’s Word to be reminded how it speaks to us in the midst of life’s stress and anxiety. Join us as we keep praying for lives to be transformed!

Next Generation Updates

We praise God that the Phase 1 program for expansion at Wyatt is progressing, slowly but surely! Last Sunday, Pastor John led an informal dedication of the first trailer which addresses increased enrollment at TLS. Timothy currently holds a temporary occupancy permit which means the two classrooms can be readied for classes. We anticipate total occupancy to be granted very soon. To God Be All the Glory!

Within the next month, the broken asphalt near the trash dumpster will be replaced with concrete. Leadership is also researching details to construct the outdoor yard building, including a “bridge” over the ditch, to be funded with a mini-capital campaign (Raise the Roof). Planning for procuring next summer’s TLS trailer has begun. In the new year, discussions about worshiping at Wyatt will begin and revolve around, “What will worship look like at Wyatt? How can worship at Wyatt be ‘worshipful’ for everyone?”  We value the congregation’s input. Mark your calendar to attend the Annual Voters’ Meeting on Dec. 4th to hear updates about school expansion, outdoor storage building, Highway 7 frontage acreage, and timeline for listing RD Mize Campus on the market. Please keep all facets of the Next Generation process in your prayers. Thank you for your support!

New Nursery Coordinator

Timothy thanks Kaye Gray for her dedication and commitment of serving as Timothy’s Nursery Coordinator for several years. Timothy also thanks Jessica Williamson for working in the nursery and appreciates her continuance in this ministry.

We are pleased to introduce and welcome new member Sarah Siegel as the newest Nursery Coordinator! Sarah and her husband Chris and their four children recently joined Timothy after attending the most recent Discovery Class. Sarah comes from a strong Lutheran background of both parents as Lutheran teachers. She graduated from St. Paul’s Lutheran HS in Concordia, where her brother currently serves as a teacher and coach.

Sarah shares her enthusiasm for serving at Timothy: “We recently became members of Timothy in hopes of becoming more involved in the church & school while our children grow. Taking on the Nursery Coordinator position is a perfect stepping-stone for getting more involved in this growing congregation. As a mother of little ones myself, I see the necessity of having a nursery during church services and activities. I’m excited to see how God uses me and my skills in this opportunity.”

While Sarah will primarily schedule nursery care for the Wyatt nursery for Sunday mornings, she will also schedule workers for nursey care at either campus when it is helpful for groups to take advantage of a staffed nursery. Please contact the church office if childcare is helpful for activities or if you would like to join the nursery care team.

Concordia Universities College Fair

The MO District is sponsoring a FREE college fair on the campus of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis on Sat., Nov. 5, from 10am-5pm.

If you are not sure which college is for you or are concerned about finding a college where you can pursue academic excellence without abandoning your faith, this is your opportunity to meet reps from all of the Concordia Universities and both seminaries. It will be the perfect time to learn the latest information on topics like financial aid and tips for choosing a college.

Chick-fil-A will be provided, and drawings for gift cards and swag prizes will be held throughout the day. Click here to register for this open-house event so that enough food and supplies are available.

2022 First Fruits contributions total $96,660.59, as of Sept. 11th. Thank you!
Raise the Roof contributions total $24,450.00, as of Sept. 11th. Thank you!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Teach Us to Pray

As we begin a journey through prayer, it is good to ask the same question the disciples once asked Jesus: “Teach us how to pray.” So what does it mean to pray? How do we actually do it? And how often should it be a part of our lives?

Cry Out This Truth:  A Devotion

One summer during my college years, I worked at the Lutheran Camp in Illinois. I spent my days in the kitchen cooking and moping, but my evenings were filled with playing games, swimming, singing and laughing. Each day the staff and campers gathered around the campfire pit for a word of prayer in which we asked God to bless our day, hollering out one decree at the top of our lungs. We had a whole list of them:
I am a child of God!
I am beloved!
I am forgiven!
I am chosen!
I am fearfully and wonderfully made!
All our voices, campers and staff exclaiming these truths in the middle of the quiet. It was a powerful way to begin our day.

My personal favorite:  I am more than a conqueror through Christ! Whatever the challenge, whatever the battle, the Lord has promised that we can overcome. We are more than conquerors—equipped and ready to fight whether we feel up to the challenge or not. That’s right. Even if we don’t feel ready, God is for us. God loves us. And nothing can separate us from that love.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8: 37-39

REMINDER: RD MIZE WORSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGE

Beginning this Sunday, September 11, one service at RD Mize will start at 9am. There will no longer be an 8am service. The Wyatt service at 10am does not change. The change at RD Mize occurs as the result of the Board of Elected Elders monitoring worship attendance patterns over the past six months. Thank you to the elders, ushers, sound techs, readers, and organists who devoted much effort and time to make the 8am service possible.

Can I Really Pray Without Ceasing?

We are so excited to get this series and this season rolling at Timothy because we KNOW as we seek His face, we will find blessing. The sermon series kicks off THIS SUNDAY, SEPT. 11TH, and continues through October 16th.

We aren’t just asking you to come and listen, but to commit to growing in prayer, living in prayer, and learning about prayer. You will have opportunities to join a prayer walk, attend a prayer breakfast, learn how to pray the Scriptures, participate in an immersive prayer path, join us for a movie focused on prayer, and much more!

There will also be a place online where you can submit questions about prayer throughout the journey and perhaps hear how prayer has impacted people’s lives. We want this to be a turning point in our lives together as we begin to equip ourselves as prayer warriors for the Kingdom of God.

Here’s a tentative overview of many of the things to come:

  • September 11:  Pray Without Ceasing series begins and worshippers go home with a “prayer card” as a reminder to pray for that ministry supported by Timothy’s tithe (Starting in October, the monthly prayer card will be available on 1st Sunday of each month.)
  • September 25:  Worship service that will revolve around prayer
  • October 1:  Prayer Breakfast, 8:30-10:30am, RD Mize (PLEASE RSVP at https://timothylutheran.com/events/ This will be an awesome morning to grow together in different ways to pray
  • October 9 through 16:  Join us for a prayer walk at St. Mary’s path, Lake Tapawingo, or Lake Remembrance. If walking doesn’t work for you, we will have a “walkless” prayer walk in the sanctuary as well
  • November 9:  Wednesday evening prayer service
  • January 2023:  View the movie War Room
  • February 2023:  Immersive Prayer Journey

Only One Week Till Timmy Burgers!!
September 16-18  Downtown Blue Springs
Builders Overhead Door  10th & Main Streets

Thank you to all who have volunteered to work for the success of this year’s Timmy Burger booth! If working in the actual booth by cooking the burgers or working the assembly line of condiments is not for you, there are many other opportunities to assist, such as preparing trays of cheese, processing onions for grilling, cutting tomatoes, filling containers with pickles, filling salt & pepper shakers, filling ketchup & mustard bottles, handing out bottles of pop, taking orders, runner between prep area & serving line, or serving as cashiers—all to reach into the community with the love of Jesus, a friendly smile, and the best burger in town! Don’t miss out! It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet more Timothy people and bask in the compliments from the community about this staple of the annual Fall Fun Fest!

The Festival Committee reports that 50 more volunteers are needed. All shifts have openings, but the greatest need is the Friday and Saturday 7:30-10:30pm shifts. Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary

The congregation is invited to the LUMAA meeting here at Timothy on Wed., Sept. 21. Registration is at 9am with devotion, speaker, and meeting starting at 9:30. Lunch will also be served with reservations needed (no cost) by Sept. 12 to Susan Ready, 816.229.7688 or 816.328.2202 or sready2@comcast.net.

In-gathering is cleaning supplies and family-sized personal hygiene products (paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap, dish soap, Depends, shampoo/conditioner, wash cloths, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc) which will be donated to the urban Lutheran food pantries: Our Redeemer, Immanuel KCMO, Messiah, and Jesu el Buen Pastor. Please drop off your donations in the marked bins at either campus by Sun., Sept. 18.

The speaker will be from Happy Bottoms, a non-profit working with KC agencies such as Immanuel KCMO Food Pantry, to provide supplemental diapers—known as “the diaper gap”—to needy families. LUMAA volunteers will follow-up with a community outreach day at the Happy Bottoms facility on Mon., Oct. 24, repackaging diapers for distribution. Volunteers are welcome to come and help. Contact Lois Domsch to volunteer or for more information (lois@domsch.com or 816.809.5846). You can also read about their work at www.happybottoms.org. Please join us in serving the urban community!

Timothy’s Mary Martha Circle Serves America’s Veterans

As a summer project, LWML’s Mary Martha Circle collected gift cards for Kansas City’s Veterans Community Project (VCP), an organization that builds Tiny Houses as well as supports any walk-in services to those who took an oath to serve our Nation. Eight circle Mary Martha members (Janel Schild, Sandy Galvin, Pam Church, Lois Kuecker, Donna Williams, Susan Ready, Marilyn Lindemann, & Jeanine West) visited the VCP on August 23rd to deliver the gift cards to Michele Orpin,
Director of Development, and learn more about their dedication to helping every veteran find a temporary home as well as build & develop skills for independent living. Timothy’s ladies enjoyed a tour of VCP’s grounds and one of the 49 Tiny Houses. It was an honor for them to be a small part of helping area citizens begin their lives anew.
