As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
 “TRICK SHOT”

We normally don’t think of Jesus as an arrow, but that’s how Isaiah describes the Messiah in one of his servant songs. And this arrow is destined to do something amazing, not just for the people of Israel, but for all people on Earth.

May This Be a Year of Ripening: A Devotion

As a new year has begun, I’ve been reflecting on my younger self and all the unpleasant, imperfect versions of myself I used to be. I was very insecure and covered that by stating my opinion and thinking I was right or simply hiding from any confrontations. Through the years, I have learned to listen more, but those traits are still me.

I look at myself now, seeing how I have softened and grown through my life. This process reminds me of a persimmon. Persimmons need time for their hard flesh to become soft and sweet. Whether hanging on a tree or lying on the counter, the persimmon will only become enjoyable to the taste when it’s gone through the internal work of ripening, with the passing of time. So I’m seeing the year ahead as another twelve months of ripening.

We all need to embrace who we’ve been and to show ourselves the grace we now so generously extend to others. From that place of love, we can approach whatever this year holds for us with openness and gentleness, with no hurry or rush. We don’t have to aim for radical transformation or massive success or even making the most of every possible opportunity set before us. Instead, we want the maturity that comes with the slow, ripening of character and soul. We want wisdom and peace to mark our days.

I pray you know that, yes, He cares for where we’re headed this year, but He’s been patiently, lovingly tending to our growth all along. May this be a year of ripening.

I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

PRAYER WALL

As we continue our theme of prayer at Timothy, we have an opportunity over the next two months to allow our students and teachers at Timothy Lutheran School to pray for us!

Check out the Prayer Wall in the lobby at each campus, grab a colorful piece of paper near the Prayer Wall, and write a prayer request that our kids can be in prayer with you. Then roll it up and place on the Prayer Wall. Pastor Ryan will distribute them to classrooms so can pray without ceasing together!

National Lutheran Schools Week at Timothy
“Making Disciples for Life”  January 23-27, 2023

It’s almost time to celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week! This week provides our network of 1,800 LCMS pre-schools, elementary schools, and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in Lutheran schools.

We thank God for the opportunity to provide excellent academic preparation for the children we serve. We are most grateful for the opportunity to share Jesus’ amazing love with children and their families.

National Lutheran Schools Week gives us an opportunity to proclaim these great blessings within the communities we serve. Our schools are amazing incubators for faithful witness of God’s love for us through Christ by teachers and students alike.

This year’s theme, “Making Disciples for Life,” strongly aligns with the week’s associated scripture, Matthew 28:18-20, The Great Commission:  And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

The week starts with K-8 students singing in worship at RD Mize on Jan. 22 and ends with them singing in worship at Wyatt on Jan. 29. During the school days, they will enjoy a Bible Bee on Jan. 26, Grandparents’/Special Person’s Day and Talent Show on Jan. 27. Chapel will occur daily, and students will enjoy Spirit Days each day as well.

Your Compassion & Generosity Are Appreciated

Timothy received the following email last Friday from Pat Enomoto, Mission Board Chair at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in KC.  Please know that the 40 gift cards donated for our Giving Tree ministry and Journey to the Manger were very much appreciated. You are transforming lives through Christ!
“I know that gift cards are not as much fun on your end as an Angel Tree, but, believe me, they were fun on this end! Another church brought in four gift cards that were different from yours, so we had to change our plan at the last minute. Our former pastor always held a “raffle” with a lot of items that had no real purpose for our attendees. When the four new cards came in that afternoon, I pulled out our roll of raffle tickets and used them. We mixed all gift cards together; there was no favoritism involved. I had people stop me and thank me for the blessing of the food cards. One lady said, “I had no food for tomorrow. This had to be God’s plan!” He does always have a plan. Sometimes we get in the way, but not this time! Blessings and thanks to all who provided the cards.

 “Who Are You”

One of the most fundamental questions that a person has to answer for himself or herself is whom he or she is. How do you identify yourself, and how do you define that identity? Jesus became one of us so that we would have a solid identity that is grounded in Him.

In Our Lack, He Draws Closer:  A Devotion

We got roller skates, for Christmas, for three of our grandchildren. Yes, they tested them out on their hardwood floors. And, yes, there were falls and tears. I watch, as my daughter goes to her children, scoops them into her arms. She draws near to them, as close as she can possibly get. She can never get too close. Her love for them is never too much.

God does the same with us. Like a mother hearing the cry of her child, God came ever close. God—who formed the stars with His hands and sprinkled galaxies we’ll never even know about—allowed His body to grow within the body of a teenage girl, the closest fathomable human condition, bodies tangled and intertwined together.

God drew near, as close as anyone could possibly get. He came to all who lacked. Jesus often seemed to surround Himself with poor and unspectacular people. A teenage girl. A step-dad who wanted to choose divorce. A group of shepherds whose names we never even learn. Their lack was never something to keep Jesus at bay. He can never get too close. His love is never too much.

There is no such thing as too much love, only a lack of it. But here’s the thing: Jesus lacks nothing. And with Him dwelling within us, we don’t lack anything either. When we come to Him with nothing but empty hands and a worn-out heart, He takes our lack and gives us something in return: far more love than we could ever fathom. He pours out His love, lavishing it. In our lack, He comes closer and closer still.

Christmas Greetings from a Missionary

Dear partners in the Coming of His Kingdom among the Chinese,

I praise God for you!  I pray you are filled with joy as you celebrate the advent of Salvation in the birth of Jesus.  I pray you are filled with hope in the anticipation of His return in glory to take us Home with Him.

The Gift of the Magi

Next Sunday, Jan. 8^th, will be Timothy’s observance of First Fruits Sunday. In the Old Testament, the practice of offering the first portion of a harvest (the first fruits) to God was a way of not only thanking Him for the blessings of that harvest but also a way of expressing trust that God would continue to provide for His people. That is why6 we offer our first fruits to God. It is a special offering above and beyond what we normally give.

For 2023, Timothy’s leadership set a First Fruits goal of $110,000.00. For each of the next three years, the first $12,000.00 of First Fruits contributions will be designated for expenses related to Timothy’s youth attending the 2025 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. The remaining contributions will fund Timothy’s other ministries as supported by operations.

Please prayerfully consider supporting Timothy’s First Fruits in 2023 as we continue to focus on transforming lives through Christ. Contributions may be placed in pew envelopes or regular envelopes clearly marked “2023 First Fruits” or offered online on Timothy’s website (www.timothylutheran.com) under the Give tab. LUMAA Update

The Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary (LUMAA) will meet on Wed., Jan. 18, at Ascension Lutheran, 4900 Blue Ridge Blvd., KCMO. Registration begins at 9am with the opening service at 9:30am. The speaker will be the Executive Director for Cornerstones of Care. The ladies will also fill duffle bags for children entering foster care.

The Mission of the Month collection is non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the food pantries. Lunch will be served.  “THE SIGN”

What would you do if God offered you a sign, a guarantee that what He had promised would absolutely come to pass? He did that once for a king named Ahaz, and Ahaz turned Him down! While we may be shocked, we would be tempted to do the same thing if God were to offer. But thankfully, God gives us the sign of His Son, Jesus, to call us back to faithfulness in Him.

Finding Joy When the World Is a Dumpster Fire: A Devotion

You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures. Psalm 16:11

Did you know the phrase “dumpster fire” is in the dictionary? Lately, I’ve been trying to avoid the saying. While it remains true—sometimes devastatingly so—that this world offers us constant chaos and catastrophe, that isn’t the only truth I know and believe. And it isn’t the reality I want to focus on.

When we throw up our hands and declare a situation, a season, an entire calendar year to be a complete loss (i.e., a dumpster fire), we’re choosing to abandon hope and walk away from the joy God is placing before us. I’m determined to choose joy.

Finding joy when everything is falling apart feels impossible, but nothing is impossible for our God. We can ask Him to be with us and to bring us joy, and He will do it.

Middle School Youth Celebrate Christmas

Christmas Chaos went down last Saturday, December 10^th, in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. Fifteen middle schoolers gathered to make gingerbread houses, have an indoor snowball fight, and chat about Jesus being the light into our darkness. It was a great night as we get closer to Christmas.

MOScholars: A Unique Opportunity

Taxpayers to the state of Missouri—both individuals and businesses—now have the unique opportunity to direct up to 50% of their state taxes to Lutheran Education. This summer, the Missouri State Treasurer’s Office launched a new tax program called MOScholars. The program allows organizations like the Missouri District to convert these tax dollars into scholarships for qualifying students attending LCMO schools throughout the state.

Different than a charitable donation, taxpayers participating in MOScholars are simply agreeing to prepay a portion of their state taxes so that funds may be used for Lutheran education. Reserving these tax credits is easy and can be completed online in a matter of minutes. The Missouri District website contains even more information on MOScholars, as well as the links to get the process started. The deadline for helping these students this school year is December 31, making now the time for taxpayers to participate in MOScholars.

All women are invited to join in fellowship on Thursday, Jan. 12, beginning at 6pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize, by the Women of Timothy Bible Study. A light meal will be available, followed by a DVD of comedienne Chonda Ruth Pierce, often billed as “the Queen of Clean.” The evening will conclude with some intentional discussion. Feel free to invite everyone for this fun night. Childcare available upon request. A community of Congolese immigrants worships at Messiah, many of whom are not accustomed to Midwest winters.  “United for Welcome”

God calls us to be a place that is united in welcoming the people around us. But what does He unite us around and what are we welcoming people to? We unite around Christ and what He has done for us on the cross and we welcome our friends and neighbors into that same relationship with Him!

If It’s Gonna Get Done, God’s Gonna Have to Do It! A Devotion

“I can’t take it anymore, God! I am exhausted. Everyone around me seems busy, I can’t ask for help! Why aren’t you helping me?” Instead of seeking God first before running around for answers, I figured out what I wanted to do and then I told God what I wanted Him to do. My prayers were more about expecting God to finish my work instead of stopping to see His will.

In my effort to control the situation, I lost sight of the power, character, and sovereignty of God. “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” Isaiah 55:8

Just as the people God spoke to in the above verse believed that following their own path was best, we’ve done the same thing. Our efforts to fix our problems don’t bring us peace, only anxiety, anger, and what looked like the end of our faith. Yet, God’s words in Isaiah 55:8 are not only a declaration of God’s character, but also an invitation for those of us who’ve forgotten how big God truly is.

When we surrender, God will give us the gift of His peace. Surrender doesn’t guarantee that God will answer instantly, nor does it mean that God will behave as we want. It does mean that we can trust God to be faithful, loving and gracious, no matter the outcome.

Journey to the Manger

If you haven’t stopped by one of the Giving Trees in the lobby at each campus, plan to do so between now and end of next week to select one or more of the gift tags available to help make someone’s Christmas brighter.

While gifts (with tag attached) may be returned to either campus prior to our Journey to the Manger celebration on Sunday, Dec. 11^th, gifts (with tag attached) brought on Dec. 11th will be placed at the front of church/auditorium as you enter the worship service.

Middle School Youth Christmas Chaos

Middle schoolers are invited to come hang out on Sat., Dec. 10 from 6-8pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize for some Christmas chaos. We will make (and perhaps crush!) gingerbread houses, engage in an indoor snowball fight, and, of course, munch on food and spend time with Jesus. Join the chaos! Bring a friend! Questions? Overwhelmingly Successful Brown Sack Groceries Ministry

Thank you, Timothy, for your generous outpouring of support for the annual Thanksgiving Brown Sack Groceries Ministry!

Gary Flandermeyer and Dan Sbisa delivered all of the grocery sacks filled with items for holiday meals to the food pantry at Jesu el Buen Pastor in Kansas City on Wednesday morning. As always, the ladies at JEBP were very grateful to receive them. The food donations, along with a frozen turkey, will be distributed to needy families on Dec. 15^th. This year, Timothy’s generosity in this ministry filled two pickup beds as well as the back seats! Modest estimates indicate approximately 1,500 pounds of food filled the numerous brown sacks! Thank you very much!

December Food Donations 

December food donations will be delivered to the Blue Springs Community Services League where the need is also great. Over 250 local families need food and other assistance this month and every month.

All foods are appreciated, but special needs include pasta, spaghetti sauce, Hamburger Helper meals, canned fruit, canned meat, and baking items. Thank you for placing your donations in the grocery cart at either campus. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting 

The Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting is THIS SUNDAY, Dec. 4, 11:30am in the Wyatt Auditorium. Please plan to attend. A quorum of 40 communicant members is required to conduct business. Your input is important. Thank you!

How do you spend your money? What is it you invest in? What we purchase with our money (and with our time and attention) reveals a lot about what our priorities are. So what does your spending say about you? And what does God’s generosity say about Him?

The Powerful Practice of Remembering: A Devotion

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3

Rod and I journeyed to St. Louis last weekend and spent some time with five rambunctious grandkids. On Sunday, we worshiped at my son’s church, and we were able to take communion. Communion with our living Savior as a family is an amazing experience, and remembering the Hope that Christ brings into our lives was overwhelming.

One of the most powerful spiritual practices is remembering. Over and over in Scripture, God calls His people to remember what He has done! To recall His faithfulness, to tell stories of His goodness to the next generation.

In the Old Testament, God’s people built altars of remembrance. In the New Testament, Jesus introduced communion. Whether we are in a season of struggle or growth, whether God feels far away or close, our soul will be strengthened if we take time to remember God’s presence in our lives. Let’s praise God for His everlasting love and unfailing kindness!

Thanksgiving Eve Service

Timothy’s annual Thanksgiving Eve Service with Holy Communion will is Wednesday, Nov. 23^rd, at 5:30pm in the RD Mize Sanctuary.  The offering will again be designated for Timothy’s Emergency Assistance Fund. We praise God for our blessings and share the love of Jesus with those in need. Thank you for your support.

Giving Trees

Timothy’s annual Giving Tree ministry will start on Wed., Nov. 23^rd in conjunction with the Thanksgiving Eve Service. Worshipers may select gift tags from the Giving Tree in the lobby at both campuses to support those in need from our Timothy family as well as those identified by the Community Services League, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Our Redeemer Lutheran in KC.  When selecting tag(s), please print your name on the Giving Tree Sign-Up Form located next to each tree. The Tags may be selected from either tree until Dec. 10.

Hydration Needed? Come Worship on December 18^th with Our Combined Choirs

Ever forgot a plant? I have, and it is amazing how many times intentional watering brings it back to life.

Our souls are much the same. We need consistent hydration. We need the living water that only Jesus offers. Music in worship is a part of that, and as we once again look to the birth of our Savior, we can take a deep drink. On our own we are heavy, brittle; we are dust. With Jesus’ living water, we are alive.

Timothy’s adult choirs invite you to the 10am service on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Wyatt Auditorium to experience “A Song in the Air” and prepare for the Christmas season.

LWML Reaches Comforter Goal

Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Timothy’s LWML and friends embraced a recent collection of new twin comforters for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace non-profit organization. Setting a goal of collecting 80 comforters coincided with the national LWML organization’s celebration of its 80^th anniversary (as well as Timothy’s LWML celebrating its 60^th anniversary).

Sleep in Heavenly Peace manufactures a free bed for children, ages 3-17, who need one because its mission is “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” Each donation from SIHP includes a bed, new mattress, new pillow, and new bedding. Timothy’s LWML contributed 80 comforters to the new bedding plea. What an awesome accomplishment! Timothy’s 2022 LUMAA In-Gathering

The Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary is a charitable missionary organization dedicated to sharing the love and Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ with those we serve in urban areas and partnering in ministry with area congregations.

Thank you, Timothy, for your generosity in donating winter necessities during the recent collection at both campuses. This week a total of 248 items in the form of coats, leggings, thermal shirts, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, lots of pairs of socks, gloves, caps, scarves, hats, lap-top throws, crocheted lap throws, hand sanitizing wipes, scotch bright pads, antiseptic cleaners, toilet paper, and $14 in currency will be distributed among five Lutheran Urban Food Pantries. A big THANK YOU to all for sharing the love of Jesus with those in need!

Giving Tuesday and Timothy

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. . .” (1 Peter 1:3)

Did you know that Tuesday, November 29^th, is designated as #GivingTuesday? It is a wonderful opportunity to join others across our nation in giving hope through financial donations. You can provide real hope by making a special #GivingTuesday donation to Timothy supporting its mission to Transform Lives through Christ. Timothy has been sharing the hope we have in Jesus throughout the community for sixty years. We are thankful and praise God for all the prayers and support given through our congregation.

As you are fully aware, recent times have been financially difficult for many, including Timothy. Yet, we are excited to share that we have made great strides in sharing the Gospel and at the same time reducing our debt and meeting our financial challenges, including the commitment to make unbudgeted principal payments since July because leadership is committed to reducing debt which was not possible last year. Unfortunately, our giving over the past few months is not meeting the demands of the budget. In addition, unexpected repairs, replacement, & maintenance expenses, all of which are over and above our adopted budget, have taken a heavy financial toll on Timothy. To be honest, our cash flow is greatly reduced to a point of concern, and we need to share this information.

Would you prayerfully consider giving a special #GivingTuesday donation to help us continue sharing the HOPE we have in Jesus while meeting our budgetary needs? Missionary Barb Rebentisch Appreciates Timothy’s Partnership

As a Chinese Theological Resource Developer in Taiwan, Barb Rebentisch continually seeks opportunities to share the love of Jesus through regular contact with those whom she serves. She interacts daily with many to build deeper relationships of transforming lives through Christ. She asks that Timothy continues our prayerful support that God’s Spirit will provide and give her eyes to see and courage to respond to the opportunities He presents to her.

Barb recently learned that she is accepted into the Distance Learning Deaconess program through the Fort Wayne seminary which she will begin in January and complete in December 2024. Completing this program may enable her to help with the work of the seminary program that is being designed to open in Taiwan in the next couple of years.

Brown Bag Grocery Sack Ministry continues through Nov. 27. Sacks may be picked up in grocery carts at either campus. A food list is attached to each sack.
