As We Gather for Worship This Weekend “Prayers of the Saints: Hannah’s Prayer”
There are many examples of prayer throughout the Bible. In the first prayer we will look at, Hannah gives thanks to God for the way that He helped her during a time of need. She sees this as something that God does and praises Him for the way He levels the playing field, bringing about justice for those who need it.
For His Faithful Love to Us Is Great: A Devotion
Praise the Lord, all nations! Glorify him, all peoples! For his faithful love to us is great; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Psalm 117 Hallelujah!
January is a natural time for making goals and embracing fresh starts. But it’s also the perfect season for praise! A time to intentionally remember who God is and what He has done in our lives.
No matter how your 2022 ended or whether you’re dreading or delighting in the start of 2023, we can all answer the psalmist’s call to praise the Lord, to glorify Him, to raise a hallelujah! Praise primes our hearts to see God’s love, to see His fingerprints of faithfulness all over our lives.
Sometimes God’s love is like a flashing neon sign we can’t miss: the declaration of “cancer free,” a check in the mail exactly when we need it, a reconciled relationship we had totally written off. And sometimes His faithfulness is truly like a fingerprint whose smudge we would likely miss if we aren’t trained to look for it: an encouraging text from a friend, a parking spot in the rain, leftovers so you don’t have to cook dinner, a bird’s morning song.
Whether we categorize God’s kindness and care toward as “big” or “small,” the truth is that His faithful love to us is GREAT! And it will never end.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend “TRICK SHOT”
We normally don’t think of Jesus as an arrow, but that’s how Isaiah describes the Messiah in one of his servant songs. And this arrow is destined to do something amazing, not just for the people of Israel, but for all people on Earth.
May This Be a Year of Ripening:A Devotion
As a new year has begun, I’ve been reflecting on my younger self and all the unpleasant, imperfect versions of myself I used to be. I was very insecure and covered that by stating my opinion and thinking I was right or simply hiding from any confrontations. Through the years, I have learned to listen more, but those traits are still me.
I look at myself now, seeing how I have softened and grown through my life. This process reminds me of a persimmon. Persimmons need time for their hard flesh to become soft and sweet. Whether hanging on a tree or lying on the counter, the persimmon will only become enjoyable to the taste when it’s gone through the internal work of ripening, with the passing of time. So I’m seeing the year ahead as another twelve months of ripening.
We all need to embrace who we’ve been and to show ourselves the grace we now so generously extend to others. From that place of love, we can approach whatever this year holds for us with openness and gentleness, with no hurry or rush. We don’t have to aim for radical transformation or massive success or even making the most of every possible opportunity set before us. Instead, we want the maturity that comes with the slow, ripening of character and soul. We want wisdom and peace to mark our days.
I pray you know that, yes, He cares for where we’re headed this year, but He’s been patiently, lovingly tending to our growth all along. May this be a year of ripening.
I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

National Lutheran Schools Week at Timothy “Making Disciples for Life” January 23-27, 2023
It’s almost time to celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week! This week provides our network of 1,800 LCMS pre-schools, elementary schools, and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in Lutheran schools.
We thank God for the opportunity to provide excellent academic preparation for the children we serve. We are most grateful for the opportunity to share Jesus’ amazing love with children and their families.
National Lutheran Schools Week gives us an opportunity to proclaim these great blessings within the communities we serve. Our schools are amazing incubators for faithful witness of God’s love for us through Christ by teachers and students alike.
This year’s theme, “Making Disciples for Life,” strongly aligns with the week’s associated scripture, Matthew 28:18-20, The Great Commission: And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’
The week starts with K-8 students singing in worship at RD Mize on Jan. 22 and ends with them singing in worship at Wyatt on Jan. 29. During the school days, they will enjoy a Bible Bee on Jan. 26, Grandparents’/Special Person’s Day and Talent Show on Jan. 27. Chapel will occur daily, and students will enjoy Spirit Days each day as well.
Your Compassion & Generosity Are Appreciated
Timothy received the following email last Friday from Pat Enomoto, Mission Board Chair at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in KC. Please know that the 40 gift cards donated for our Giving Tree ministry and Journey to the Manger were very much appreciated. You are transforming lives through Christ!
“I know that gift cards are not as much fun on your end as an Angel Tree, but, believe me, they were fun on this end! Another church brought in four gift cards that were different from yours, so we had to change our plan at the last minute. Our former pastor always held a “raffle” with a lot of items that had no real purpose for our attendees. When the four new cards came in that afternoon, I pulled out our roll of raffle tickets and used them. We mixed all gift cards together; there was no favoritism involved. I had people stop me and thank me for the blessing of the food cards. One lady said, “I had no food for tomorrow. This had to be God’s plan!” He does always have a plan. Sometimes we get in the way, but not this time! Blessings and thanks to all who provided the cards.
Pat Enomoto.”
CSL Thanks Timothy
Timothy received the following note from the Blue Springs Community Services League this week:
“Sending a very special THANK YOU for your amazing donation to Community Services League Blue Springs during the holidays. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend “The Gift of the Magi”
One of the things we associate with the Christmas story is the arrival of the wise men with their gifts. It may seem odd to bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh to a newborn, but each of those gifts point to who is receiving the gift and what He has come to do. And in the same way, we bring the gifts of our First Fruits to Christ because of who He is and what He has done for us.
How to Handle an Impossible Task: A Devotion
Sometimes, tasks seem impossible because they are overwhelmingly huge. But when it comes to simple tasks, those, too, can feel impossible. Even something as simple as hanging a picture or rearranging furniture can seem daunting. But with a friend’s help and perspective, those day-to-day decisions can feel less intimidating.
Ecclesiastes 4:9 says it this way: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” I’m sure my friend who helped me didn’t overthink our collaboration; she was just present . . . a friend willing to help.
Maybe you know someone who is struggling. Perhaps they need someone to say, “Hey, how can I help you out this week? Two provide perspective. Two makes the task that felt a little impossible work. Take part in important community work. Doing things together is exactly how God wired us to live.
Children’s Ministry Epiphany Party
Calling all Timothy kids! TONIGHT (Friday, Jan. 6) is the Children’s Ministry Epiphany Party from 6-8pm at Wyatt Campus. Bring your friends and continue to build friendships with all your church friends. You’ll enjoy games, crafts, pizza, and more!
The Gift of the Magi
THIS SUNDAY, Jan. 8th, is Timothy’s observance of First Fruits Sunday. In the Old Testament, the practice of offering the first portion of a harvest (the first fruits) to God was a way of not only thanking Him for the blessings of that harvest but also a way of expressing trust that God would continue to provide for His people. That is why we offer our first fruits to God. It is a special offering above and beyond what we normally give.
For 2023, Timothy’s leadership set a First Fruits goal of $110,000.00. For each of the next three years, the first $12,000.00 of First Fruits contributions will be designated for expenses related to the 2025 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. The remaining contributions will fund Timothy’s other ministries as supported by operations.
Please prayerfully consider supporting Timothy’s First Fruits in 2023 as we continue to focus on transforming lives through Christ. Contributions may be placed in pew envelopes or regular envelopes clearly marked “2023 First Fruits” or offered online on Timothy’s website (www.timothylutheran.com) under the Give tab. Thank you very much!
A Night of Laughter
All ladies and their friends welcome to enjoy the humor of Comedienne Chonda Ruth Pierce, The Queen of Clean, on Thursday, Jan. 12, starting at 6pm, in the RD Mize Family Life Center. It’s free! RSVP not required but helpful by signing up on church app (Events), church website (Events), or by calling church office (816.228.5300). Childcare available upon request.
Movie Night at Timothy
Make plans to attend a free movie night to watch War Room (rated PG) in the Wyatt Auditorium on Friday, Jan. 27, at 7pm. The GIVE Commission is sponsoring this opportunity to continue the church-wide prayer emphasis. Free popcorn and bottled water will be available. No need to RSVP; just show up to watch a powerful movie! Invite friends! Childcare will be provided in the nursery at Wyatt. War Room is a compelling faith drama filled with humor and heart that became a #1 movie in US theaters and received raving reviews from audiences of all ages. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have it all—great jobs, beautiful daughter, and their dream house. But appearances can be deceiving. Their world is actually crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. While Tony basks in his professional success, Elizabeth resigns herself to increasing bitterness. But their lives take an unexpected turn when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara, and is challenged to establish a “war room” and a battle plan of prayer for her family. As Elizabeth tries to fight for her family, Tony’s hidden struggles come to light. Tony must decide if he will make amends with his family and prove Miss Clara’s wisdom that victories don’t come by accident.
Lent 2023
During the Lenten season this year, we will look at prayers Jesus prayed during Holy Week, see what we can learn from them, and how they can help us grow in our faith. Make plans to join us in worship on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.
On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, two services (4pm and 6:30pm) will occur at RD Mize with Holy Communion at both services. The succeeding Lenten services are Mar. 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29, with only one service each evening at 5:30pm, also at RD Mize.
We look forward to the annual LWML Ash Wednesday Ham Dinner in the Family Life Center, served between 5 and 7pm. Free-will donations are accepted, with proceeds designated for Missions (10%) and Timothy’s Church Worker Professional Development (90%).
Lenten Dinners are also available for the Wednesday services in March, if hosted by a Timothy ministry, also accepting free-will donations to support that ministry’s fundraiser. On March 1, the June2023 Youth Mission Trip Ministry will provide a lasagna meal. On March 8, Timothy’s School Ministry will provide a pizza meal to support the TLS Scholarship Fund.
If a Timothy group would like to host a Lenten Dinner on March 15, 22, or 29, please contact Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com or 816.228.5300 Ext. 8040) to reserve your preferred date.
Thanks for supporting Timothy’s ministries!
Pink Tie Sunday
You may remember years past when Timothy recognized Pink Tie Sunday to support infant loss. While Timothy is not focusing a service on this ministry this year, you may choose to wear pink this Sunday, Jan. 8, to remember those families who have lost little ones. Below is an excerpt from a reflection written by Pastor Will Hanke, son of Pastor Rod and Miriam Lindemann. Will and Mindy Hanke created Pink Tie Sunday, as an extension of Sanctity of Life Sunday, to honor their daughter Maddy who went to heaven eight years ago.
“Pink Tie Sunday was created by Maddy’s Pa. Mindy sent Pa out to look for the perfect pink dress for Maddy’s funeral. I could only imagine the pain my parents felt searching through stores to buy a dress to bury their granddaughter. Like us, their pain turned into mission as Pa came back to church the next Sunday to preach and baptize one granddaughter while mourning another. That special day—Pink Tie Sunday—was born. It gave voice to a suffering group of people, and thus a new mission to never forget those we have lost who are home with Jesus.
At times, this Sunday can feel selfish since it is my story, yet everyone who faces loss continues to grieve even when the world moves on. This Sunday we stop and grieve together and wear pink to celebrate life and those children who will never get to tell their stories. We remember that Jesus died so that loss is not the end. We remember that Jesus died so that loss is not the end. We remember that we have Hope, which is the certainty that those who believe in Jesus will be with Him forever. Our family waits on the day we will be with Maddy, but until them we wear pink to give Hope to the hopeless!”

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend “Who Are You”
One of the most fundamental questions that a person has to answer for himself or herself is whom he or she is. How do you identify yourself, and how do you define that identity? Jesus became one of us so that we would have a solid identity that is grounded in Him.
In Our Lack, He Draws Closer: A Devotion
We got roller skates, for Christmas, for three of our grandchildren. Yes, they tested them out on their hardwood floors. And, yes, there were falls and tears. I watch, as my daughter goes to her children, scoops them into her arms. She draws near to them, as close as she can possibly get. She can never get too close. Her love for them is never too much.
God does the same with us. Like a mother hearing the cry of her child, God came ever close. God—who formed the stars with His hands and sprinkled galaxies we’ll never even know about—allowed His body to grow within the body of a teenage girl, the closest fathomable human condition, bodies tangled and intertwined together.
God drew near, as close as anyone could possibly get. He came to all who lacked. Jesus often seemed to surround Himself with poor and unspectacular people. A teenage girl. A step-dad who wanted to choose divorce. A group of shepherds whose names we never even learn. Their lack was never something to keep Jesus at bay. He can never get too close. His love is never too much.
There is no such thing as too much love, only a lack of it. But here’s the thing: Jesus lacks nothing. And with Him dwelling within us, we don’t lack anything either. When we come to Him with nothing but empty hands and a worn-out heart, He takes our lack and gives us something in return: far more love than we could ever fathom. He pours out His love, lavishing it. In our lack, He comes closer and closer still.
Christmas Greetings from a Missionary
Timothy received the following letter from Barb Rebentisch, one of the missionaries supported by Timothy’s tithe.
Dear partners in the Coming of His Kingdom among the Chinese,
I praise God for you! I pray you are filled with joy as you celebrate the advent of Salvation in the birth of Jesus. I pray you are filled with hope in the anticipation of His return in glory to take us Home with Him.
The above photo is from a Christmas tree at Concordia Middle School several years back. I love the message, because while we were lost, Emmanuel came to us.
Amazing grace!
Christmas joy,

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend “Christmas Angels”
One of the things that people associate with Christmas are angels, whether it’s the angels who spoke to Mary and Joseph or the angelic host who sang about Christ’s birth. But the reading from Hebrews points us beyond those messengers to the Message itself: Christ, the living Word, becoming one of us in the flesh.
The Birth of Our Savior: A Meditation
On this last week of Advent, I invite you to take a journey with storyteller Sherri Gragg as she leads us in a meditation of what Christ’s birth might have been like. I pray that your heart will be led to celebrate and worship our humble, miraculous Savior!
While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed h8im in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. Luke 2: 6-7 (NIV)
Mary couldn’t sit still. With great effort, she rose from the low stool in the courtyard where she and the other women were preparing the evening meal. She placed one hand on her lower back and began to pace back and forth. She felt restless, uneasy.
A moment later, Mary gasped as the dull ache in her lower abdomen suddenly intensified. “It’s time,” she said. Joseph leapt to his feet, his face white with alarm. His uncle chuckled, patted him on the shoulder, and sent him off to get the town midwife.
Quickly, the animals were evicted from the stables beneath the main living area. By the time the midwife arrived, Mary was leaning against the cool stone wall of the stables as she waited for the next contraction to pass.
Hours later, in the dark early hours of the morning, Mary gasped for air and cried out in pain from the birthing stool. The next contraction tore through Mary’s body only seconds after the last one subsided. Then, with a cry of agony, she bore down with all of her remaining strength. The pain faded as her baby’s first cry pierced the night. “You have a son!” the midwife announced. Upstairs, Joseph’s ecstatic shout was joined by the joyful celebration of his uncles and cousins.
In the stables below, the midwife tenderly placed the crying baby on His young mother’s chest. Tears flowed down Mary’s face as she bent to kiss her son’s forehead for the first time.
Joseph peeked around the corner of the stables. “Come,” she said. “Come meet your son.” Joseph rushed to Mary’s side and knelt down to wrap an arm around her. Gently, he placed a calloused hand on the baby’s head as he blinked back tears of joy. “Yeshua,” Mary said, as she gazed tenderly into the eyes of her son, now quiet and alert. “Yeshua . . . “
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus (Yeshua), because He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21
Celebrate Our Savior’s Birth at Timothy

Journey to the Manger Serves Many
Thank you, Timothy, for your generous outpouring of love shared with area families blessed by our Journey to the Manger ministry.
You provided 11 families with a variety of specific requested gifts and gift cards. An additional 50 gift bags and 27 gift cards of $25 each for groceries and gasoline were delivered to Community Services League and other community families. In addition, 45 families received a gift card for a hot meal. Twenty-five scarves, 5 pr of gloves and hats provided needed warmth to worshipers at Our Redeemer in KC.
Since November 1st, $4,030.00 in donations have been received for Missions, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Timothy’s Emergency Fund. The Christmas Eve offerings will be designated for Timothy’s Ray of Hope fund, a special fund for Timothy members in need.
Timothy’s Kids Share Christmas Joy
On Sunday, December 11th, at the Wyatt worship service, students from FaithRoots and CrossWalk took the stage to sing “Away in a Manger” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain” before leading the congregation in singing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. It also was a moment to acknowledge all th time and energy our FaithRoots and CrossWalk teachers offer to serve our kids. We love our Timothy family as we serve, sing, and celebrate this season together.
On Monday, December 12th and Wednesday, December 14th, the Wyatt Auditorium was packed with family, friends, church members, and neighbors to take in the sights and sounds of our TLS programs. On Monday, the school band performed an arrangement of songs, followed by pre-schoolers and kindergartners singing a variety of Christmas songs and sharing a special Christmas poem pointing us toward to the light of Christ. On Wednesday, first through eighth graders dressed as angels, wise men, shepherds, animals, and the Holy Family, leading us on a journey to knowing Jesus more through sharing Bible prophecies, songs, and the many names of Jesus found in the Scriptures. Both programs shared a simple but important message of light and hope found in the person of Christ! It was another great week of preparing our hearts to celebrate ALL that God has done.
Adult Choirs Combine Voices There’s a Song in the Air
Last Sunday, worshipers enjoyed a special performance of Timothy’s choirs as the RD Mize Sanctuary Choir and the Wyatt Celebration Chorus combined voices to share the cantata, There’s a Song in the Air. What a fabulous performance by very talented men and women! If you missed it or if you’d like to enjoy it again, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTWJDJ2BR-0
Timothy Blesses Its Hillcrest Resident
Timothy’s current Hillcrest resident, Dominia, appreciates Timothy’s ongoing support, with a special thanks for Christmas gifts provided by the Hillcrest Team, GIVE Commission, and other members (see photo). She reports that she can now visit with her children more which is a huge motivator to persevere in the Hillcrest program. She appreciates the prayers from Timothy which help her through this journey. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Your kindness really transforms lives through Christ.
The Gift of the Magi
On Sunday, January 8th, Timothy will once again observe First Fruits Sunday.
In 2023, Timothy’s leadership set a First Fruits goal of $110,000. For each of the next three years, the first $12,000 of First Fruits contributions will be designated for expenses related to Timothy’s youth attending the 2025 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. The remaining contributions will fund
Timothy’s other ministries as supported by operations.
Please prayerfully consider supporting Timothy’s First Fruits in 2023 as we continue to focus on transforming lives through Christ. Contributions may be placed in pew envelopes or regular envelopes clearly marked “2023 First Fruits” or offered online on Timothy’s website under the Give tab. Thank you very much!
Timothy Always Generously Supports Food Donations
Food pantries need restocking after holiday meals fed so many. Blue Springs Community Services League served several hundred local families this past week. Hamburger Helper, spaghetti & sauce, canned meats, and boxed potatoes are especially needed now and can be placed in the grocery cart located in the lobby at each campus. Thank you for donated groceries this past year!

What would you do if God offered you a sign, a guarantee that what He had promised would absolutely come to pass? He did that once for a king named Ahaz, and Ahaz turned Him down! While we may be shocked, we would be tempted to do the same thing if God were to offer. But thankfully, God gives us the sign of His Son, Jesus, to call us back to faithfulness in Him.
Finding Joy When the World Is a Dumpster Fire: A Devotion
You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures. Psalm 16:11
Did you know the phrase “dumpster fire” is in the dictionary? Lately, I’ve been trying to avoid the saying. While it remains true—sometimes devastatingly so—that this world offers us constant chaos and catastrophe, that isn’t the only truth I know and believe. And it isn’t the reality I want to focus on.
When we throw up our hands and declare a situation, a season, an entire calendar year to be a complete loss (i.e., a dumpster fire), we’re choosing to abandon hope and walk away from the joy God is placing before us. I’m determined to choose joy.
Finding joy when everything is falling apart feels impossible, but nothing is impossible for our God. We can ask Him to be with us and to bring us joy, and He will do it.

Middle School Youth Celebrate Christmas
Christmas Chaos went down last Saturday, December 10th, in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. Fifteen middle schoolers gathered to make gingerbread houses, have an indoor snowball fight, and chat about Jesus being the light into our darkness. It was a great night as we get closer to Christmas.

MOScholars: A Unique Opportunity
Taxpayers to the state of Missouri—both individuals and businesses—now have the unique opportunity to direct up to 50% of their state taxes to Lutheran Education. This summer, the Missouri State Treasurer’s Office launched a new tax program called MOScholars. The program allows organizations like the Missouri District to convert these tax dollars into scholarships for qualifying students attending LCMO schools throughout the state.
Different than a charitable donation, taxpayers participating in MOScholars are simply agreeing to prepay a portion of their state taxes so that funds may be used for Lutheran education. Reserving these tax credits is easy and can be completed online in a matter of minutes. The Missouri District website contains even more information on MOScholars, as well as the links to get the process started. Leah Sieveking at the District office can be reahed at 314.590.0211 or leah.sieveking@mo.lcms.org with questions. Timothy members may also contact TLS School Board President Christy Yager (voort04@hotmail.com or 816.820.4730) with questions. The deadline for helping these students this school year is December 31, making now the time for taxpayers to participate in MOScholars.

All women are invited to join in fellowship on Thursday, Jan. 12, beginning at 6pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize, by the Women of Timothy Bible Study. God’s people often find themselves wandering through wildernesses, both literal and metaphorical. It would be easy for them to get lost out in the desert, especially if they try to strike out on their own. But God is always about making a way for His people. And He especially does that by sending His Son to be the Living Way!
Make It Hard to Be Offended: A Devotion
I have a confession to make. When I overhear conversations and feel like the people I care about are being overlooked, I get upset. It used to be my children, but my circle of care has expanded to the people in my church. I can get upset. A lot . . . like a lot a lot. Lord, forgive me.
I love how it states in Colossians 3: 13: Bear with one another and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” As Christians, we are called to forgive. Every day of our lives, we sin against God, and yet He’s quick to show us mercy and grace. God doesn’t burn us, or cancel us, or shame us. God’s treatment of us is the model for how we are to treat one another.
Christians should be the most forgiving people on the face of this planet because we know best what it means to be forgiven.
Ready for Christmas: There’s a Song in the Air
I was certainly ready for Thanksgiving this year! How about you? You may have gathered with friends and family, or you may have given thanks on your own. Maybe you baked up pies and mashed potatoes, or perhaps your kitchen and home were quiet this year. One thing I am certain of is that the shift from Thanksgiving to Advent Christmas happened quickly!
A week from Sunday is the Choir’s Christmas Worship, “A Song in the Air.” It’s a great way to begin celebrating and worshiping the Baby Jesus, the Savior, the Promised One. The choir will lead the congregation at the 10am Worship Service on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Wyatt Campus. We hope you can join us.
Wherever this season finds you, we pray you feel the nearness of God. He loves you, right where you are, just as you are.
Journey to the Manger
THIS SUNDAY, Dec. 11, is the time to bring all gifts (with tags attached) from the Giving Trees to the front of the worship center at each campus as you enter worship, if you have not already brought them to church. Thank you for your generous, caring hearts!

PTL Santa’s Workshop
The Timothy Lutheran School’s Parent Teacher League (PTL) completed their second quarter fundraiser project this past week; “Santa’s Workshop.” All students, three years old through eighth grade, were given the opportunity to purchase a gift each for his/her mom and dad for Christmas. Over 350 gifts were donated to the PTL. Gifts ranged in price from $5.00 – $15.00. Students were given the opportunity to browse, select and buy the gifts for their parents. It was my pleasure to see students’ faces light up when they found the perfect gift. My heart was full as I watched students go through the line, excited to give something special to their parents. This was the first time the PTL attempted anything like this. It was a huge success! Over $2000.00 was raised by the event. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend “United for Welcome”
God calls us to be a place that is united in welcoming the people around us. But what does He unite us around and what are we welcoming people to? We unite around Christ and what He has done for us on the cross and we welcome our friends and neighbors into that same relationship with Him!
If It’s Gonna Get Done, God’s Gonna Have to Do It! A Devotion
“I can’t take it anymore, God! I am exhausted. Everyone around me seems busy, I can’t ask for help! Why aren’t you helping me?” Instead of seeking God first before running around for answers, I figured out what I wanted to do and then I told God what I wanted Him to do. My prayers were more about expecting God to finish my work instead of stopping to see His will.
In my effort to control the situation, I lost sight of the power, character, and sovereignty of God. “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” Isaiah 55:8
Just as the people God spoke to in the above verse believed that following their own path was best, we’ve done the same thing. Our efforts to fix our problems don’t bring us peace, only anxiety, anger, and what looked like the end of our faith. Yet, God’s words in Isaiah 55:8 are not only a declaration of God’s character, but also an invitation for those of us who’ve forgotten how big God truly is.
When we surrender, God will give us the gift of His peace. Surrender doesn’t guarantee that God will answer instantly, nor does it mean that God will behave as we want. It does mean that we can trust God to be faithful, loving and gracious, no matter the outcome.

Dec. 14—Advent Service/TLS First-Eighth Grade Christmas Program—6:30pm at Wyatt Auditorium. “Do You Know Him?” Come hear the students lead us in joy-filled Christmas music & Scripture readings, reminding us that this little child is no ordinary child, but the Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of the world. While gifts (with tag attached) may be returned to either campus prior to our Journey to the Manger celebration on Sunday, Dec. 11th, gifts (with tag attached) brought on Dec. 11th will be placed at the front of church/auditorium as you enter the worship service.
Please note that it is very important to attach the tag to the gift/donation. If contributing a donation by check, please make check payable to Timothy rather than the benefiting organization. Thank you!

Middle schoolers are invited to come hang out on Sat., Dec. 10 from 6-8pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize for some Christmas chaos. Contact Pastor Ryan or Clancy Heisel.
Overwhelmingly Successful Brown Sack Groceries Ministry
Thank you, Timothy, for your generous outpouring of support for the annual Thanksgiving Brown Sack Groceries Ministry!
Gary Flandermeyer and Dan Sbisa delivered all of the grocery sacks filled with items for holiday meals to the food pantry at Jesu el Buen Pastor in Kansas City on Wednesday morning. As always, the ladies at JEBP were very grateful to receive them. The food donations, along with a frozen turkey, will be distributed to needy families on Dec. 15th. This year, Timothy’s generosity in this ministry filled two pickup beds as well as the back seats! Modest estimates indicate approximately 1,500 pounds of food filled the numerous brown sacks! Thank you very much!
December Food Donations
December food donations will be delivered to the Blue Springs Community Services League where the need is also great. Over 250 local families need food and other assistance this month and every month.
All foods are appreciated, but special needs include pasta, spaghetti sauce, Hamburger Helper meals, canned fruit, canned meat, and baking items. Thank you for placing your donations in the grocery cart at either campus. Thank you for your ongoing support!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend Money Matters: Money Matters: Sowing and Harvesting
Earlier this year, farmers and gardeners sowed their seeds into the ground and by now, they’ve been able to harvest their crop. What you sow determines what you harvest. The same is true when it comes to our Christian living. What we sow in God’s name will eventually be harvested. So what can we expect to find when it comes to our money?
Exchanging Envy for Celebration: A Devotion
The miracle of baptism was celebrated on Sunday. I looked at the young couple standing so picture perfect with that small child between them, and I revel in a God who comes down to touch us in such a personal way. Recently, someone had shared their envy for those women who were able to have children. She lived a life of pain and loneliness which crowded out her capacity to celebrate with her friends. She shared how it seemed God was making everyone else’s dreams come true and she was somehow forgotten.
The apostle Paul had a similar experience. In John 21, Jesus gives Peter a glimpse of how he’s going to die. Peter doesn’t know how to handle what Jesus tells him, so he awkwardly looks over at John and asks, “Lord, what about him?” I imagine Jesus keeping His eyes on Peter as He replies, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
We all have moments when we look at the world and see people with so much more in life, and we ask Jesus, “What about them? Why are their lives going the way they want? Why are their dreams coming true?” And I think Jesus keeps His tender eyes trained on us and says with kindness, “What is that to you? You must follow Me.”
We must follow Jesus.
Even if it still hurts, we can keep our eyes on Jesus through the pain. We can choose to trust Him instead of envying others. Trust is more powerful and braver than envy. Trust chooses, over and over, to see the good.
If in the midst of our celebration and trust, the envy, pain and loneliness still sneak in, we can bring every ache into the light of Jesus. Because no matter what happens in the lives of the people around us, we are following Him.
Blessed Thanksgiving to All
A blessed Thanksgiving to our Timothy family! We pray God continues to richly bless each family as we seek to transform lives through Christ. Everyone is invited to Timothy’s Thanksgiving Eve ServiceTONIGHT at 5:30 in the RD Mize sanctuary. Holy Communion will be celebrated. Tonight’s offering will fund Timothy’s Emergency Assistance Fund for the coming year. Thank you for your generous support of this solid Transforming Lives through Christ blessing.
Speaking of blessings, Timothy so generously supports food donations all year long for Community Services League, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Jesu el Buen Pastor congregation in KC. Especially during this time of year, donations are abundant with the annual Brown Grocery Sack Ministry to provide staples for holiday meals for the hungry in KC. The Donations Closet is overflowing—what a blessing! There’s still time to bring in your filled sacks but please do so by Nov. 27th. We already know it will require two trucks to deliver all of the food! Thank you!!
Confirmation Students Serve Others
Transforming Lives through Christ was evident last Wednesday, Nov. 16, when over 50 Confirmation students and their Prayer Pals gathered in the Family Life Center to pack 100 meals for Metro Lutheran Ministries. These lunches will feed area homeless over the next several weeks. After completing the packing project, the youth and their adult prayer pals enjoyed a hot chocolate bar while becoming better acquainted. Lots of good connections were made, and lots of people will appreciate the food packed into these bags! Thank you, youth and adults for your service!
Youth Scavenger Hunt
Timothy’s youth had a rowdy time on our Scavenger Hunt last Saturday, Nov. 19th. They ran around to visit some of our local members where they acted out skits and sang silly songs, ran through stores to purchase items, took some silly photos, and collected items for charity. It was a great day filled with laughter and holiday cheer by collecting over 40 items to donate to Resource Health for single moms.
Youth Servant Event at Our Redeemer Lutheran
Timothy youth and families made their way to Our Redeemer Lutheran in KC last Sunday, Nov. 20th, to serve a Thanksgiving meal to 45 members in the community. It was a great opportunity to be generous servants! Pastor Ryan shared a brief devotion about the God who is for us and with us. We continue to have our lives transformed!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend Money Matters: Hey, Big Spender!
How do you spend your money? What is it you invest in? What we purchase with our money (and with our time and attention) reveals a lot about what our priorities are. So what does your spending say about you? And what does God’s generosity say about Him?
The Powerful Practice of Remembering: A Devotion
I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3
Rod and I journeyed to St. Louis last weekend and spent some time with five rambunctious grandkids. On Sunday, we worshiped at my son’s church, and we were able to take communion. Communion with our living Savior as a family is an amazing experience, and remembering the Hope that Christ brings into our lives was overwhelming.
One of the most powerful spiritual practices is remembering. Over and over in Scripture, God calls His people to remember what He has done! To recall His faithfulness, to tell stories of His goodness to the next generation.
In the Old Testament, God’s people built altars of remembrance. In the New Testament, Jesus introduced communion. Whether we are in a season of struggle or growth, whether God feels far away or close, our soul will be strengthened if we take time to remember God’s presence in our lives. Let’s praise God for His everlasting love and unfailing kindness!
Thanksgiving Eve Service
Timothy’s annual Thanksgiving Eve Service with Holy Communion will is Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, at5:30pm in the RD Mize Sanctuary. The offering will again be designated for Timothy’s Emergency Assistance Fund. We praise God for our blessings and share the love of Jesus with those in need. Thank you for your support.
Giving Trees
Timothy’s annual Giving Tree ministry will start on Wed., Nov. 23rd in conjunction with the Thanksgiving Eve Service. Worshipers may select gift tags from the Giving Tree in the lobby at both campuses to support those in need from our Timothy family as well as those identified by the Community Services League, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Our Redeemer Lutheran in KC. When selecting tag(s), please print your name on the Giving Tree Sign-Up Form located next to each tree. The Tags may be selected from either tree until Dec. 10.
Thank you for returning your gift(s), with tag(s) attached, on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Timothy’s Journey to the Manger during the worship service at either campus.
Hydration Needed? Come Worship on December 18th with Our Combined Choirs
Ever forgot a plant? I have, and it is amazing how many times intentional watering brings it back to life.
Our souls are much the same. We need consistent hydration. We need the living water that only Jesus offers. Music in worship is a part of that, and as we once again look to the birth of our Savior, we can take a deep drink. On our own we are heavy, brittle; we are dust. With Jesus’ living water, we are alive.
Timothy’s adult choirs invite you to the 10am service on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the WyattAuditorium to experience “A Song in the Air” and prepare for the Christmas season.
LWML Reaches Comforter Goal
Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Timothy’s LWML and friends embraced a recent collection of new twin comforters for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace non-profit organization. Setting a goal of collecting 80 comforters coincided with the national LWML organization’s celebration of its 80th anniversary (as well as Timothy’s LWML celebrating its 60th anniversary).
Sleep in Heavenly Peace manufactures a free bed for children, ages 3-17, who need one because its mission is “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” Each donation from SIHP includes a bed, new mattress, new pillow, and new bedding. Timothy’s LWML contributed 80 comforters to the new bedding plea. What an awesome accomplishment! Pictured here with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace rep are LWML members Donna Williams, Lois Kuecker, and Susan Ready. Thank you to all for your generous hearts in reaching this awesome goal!
Timothy’s 2022 LUMAA In-Gathering
The Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary is a charitable missionary organization dedicated to sharing the love and Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ with those we serve in urban areas and partnering in ministry with area congregations.
Thank you, Timothy, for your generosity in donating winter necessities during the recent collection at both campuses. This week a total of 248 items in the form of coats, leggings, thermal shirts, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, lots of pairs of socks, gloves, caps, scarves, hats, lap-top throws, crocheted lap throws, hand sanitizing wipes, scotch bright pads, antiseptic cleaners, toilet paper, and $14 in currency will be distributed among five Lutheran Urban Food Pantries. A big THANK YOU to all for sharing the love of Jesus with those in need!
Giving Tuesday and Timothy
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. . .” (1 Peter 1:3)
Did you know that Tuesday, November 29th, is designated as #GivingTuesday? It is a wonderful opportunity to join others across our nation in giving hope through financial donations. You can provide real hope by making a special #GivingTuesday donation to Timothy supporting its mission to Transform Lives through Christ. Timothy has been sharing the hope we have in Jesus throughout the community for sixty years. We are thankful and praise God for all the prayers and support given through our congregation.
As you are fully aware, recent times have been financially difficult for many, including Timothy. Yet, we are excited to share that we have made great strides in sharing the Gospel and at the same time reducing our debt and meeting our financial challenges, including the commitment to make unbudgeted principal payments since July because leadership is committed to reducing debt which was not possible last year. Unfortunately, our giving over the past few months is not meeting the demands of the budget. In addition, unexpected repairs, replacement, & maintenance expenses, all of which are over and above our adopted budget, have taken a heavy financial toll on Timothy. To be honest, our cash flow is greatly reduced to a point of concern, and we need to share this information.
Would you prayerfully consider giving a special #GivingTuesday donation to help us continue sharing the HOPE we have in Jesus while meeting our budgetary needs? The need is real, and we trust that God will provide through our brothers and sisters in Christ. Please watch for our email on November 29th and help Timothy continue to share HOPE. Thank you for your support!
As a Chinese Theological Resource Developer in Taiwan, Barb Rebentisch continually seeks opportunities to share the love of Jesus through regular contact with those whom she serves. She interacts daily with many to build deeper relationships of transforming lives through Christ. She asks that Timothy continues our prayerful support that God’s Spirit will provide and give her eyes to see and courage to respond to the opportunities He presents to her.
Barb recently learned that she is accepted into the Distance Learning Deaconess program through the Fort Wayne seminary which she will begin in January and complete in December 2024. Completing this program may enable her to help with the work of the seminary program that is being designed to open in Taiwan in the next couple of years.
We pray God’s blessings upon Barb’s ministry. If you would like to contact her, her email address is barb.rebentisch@lcms.org. Mail may be sent to her at Asia Regional Office Building, 5F-1, #167 Gongyuan St., East District, Chiayi City, Taiwan.
