As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:
Prayers of the Passion: No Fear

Fear seems like such an odd thing to talk about at Easter. This is supposed to be a happy occasion, filled with light and joy. But the earliest followers of Jesus felt just that: fear. Uncertainty. Doubt. While technically not a prayer, the angel the women encountered at the empty tomb called them out of their fear and uncertainty to a life of peace and faith.

REFLECT

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

I found some old photographs from a lifetime ago. In each photo, I saw my younger self. I reflected on the times I was simply filling the gap, using entertainment, relationships, and busyness looking for anything or anyone to fill the gap inside of me.

For most of life, we are trying to fill this gap. We are pressing forward. Finish school, get the job, get the guy, get the house, get the baby, get the security, get the peace, get the stuff. We think to get to the next thing we must hurry up.

One of the greatest disciplines we can do in our spiritual lives is reflect. Reflection slows us down, helps us see, and allows us to remember God. Reflection might just be one of the most undervalued disciplines in the Christian life. We fail to make the connection that our past is the pathway for us to the future. By remembering God’s faithfulness, contemplating God’s goodness, and recalling the miracles God has done in our lives, we then have the ability to trust God with today and tomorrow.

Baby STEPs Ministry
Supporting Timothy’s Expectant Parents

Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart. Jeremiah 1:5

Is your family growing? Or do you know someone whose family is growing? Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle organizes the Baby STEPs ministry which supports and celebrates the new life with which God blesses our Timothy families.
Volunteers offer personal contact through phone calls, cards, and prayers. The homecoming of a new infant is also celebrated with a home visit and meals provided by “meals for Moms” volunteers. Each Timothy baby receives a new pair of white booties, handmade by a volunteer, as a keepsake from the church, symbolizing being washed clean and made God’s child at baptism.
If you would like to be a Baby Steps recipient or volunteer, please contact Kaye
gray at 816.585.6530 or kgray1024@gmail.com.

Immersive Prayer Journey Rescheduled

The GROW Commission has rescheduled Timothy’s Immersive Prayer Journey for Saturday, May 13, from 9am-4pm at the RD Mize Campus.

Through a path of nine self-guided stations of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, you will engage in prayer and reflection, Scripture readings, and simple activities, all intended to deepen your connection with our Savior, so make plans to come experience the prayer Jesus Himself taught us to pray.

The prayer journey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, but the pace is up to you. Couples and families with small children are welcome to take the journey together, if desired. Sign-ups are necessary for people to move smoothly through the journey. We are excited about the impact this will have on our lives.

Please go to this “PRAYER LINK”  or church app (Events) to sign up for one slot per family. If there are more than three in the group, please sign up for an additional slot.  Thank you! And please keep this experience in your prayers!

Joining Jesus | He’s Calling!
So how is Jesus messing with you? What is He inviting you to notice, believe, or wrestle with?  What is He inviting you to do?
The truth is Jesus is already on the loose all over the place, bringing hope, offering peace, restoring the broken. And He has invited us to JOIN Him in this life-changing work. That is what it means to be followers of Jesus. But that can feel rather intimidating and leave us wondering how.
This year our ministry focus at Timothy involves walking together as we learn how to JOIN JESUS ON HIS MISSION every day. We start this journey by diving into a book written by Pastor Greg Finke called Joining Jesus on His Mission. The leadership at Timothy has already begun, and now we are inviting you to join us. Come and meet the author! We have an incredible opportunity to spend some time with Pastor Finke on Saturday, April 29th to offer us encouragement and hope that we really can be a part of what Jesus is doing in our neighborhood and community. Together, we can make an eternal difference, and it isn’t as difficult you might think.
Timothy and other local Lutheran churches will collectively host Pastor Greg Finke at Point of Hope Lutheran Church on April 29th 9 am-noon, where we will join with our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the Kansas City area to grow in our calling to be everyday missionaries in all the places we already are. We strongly encourage you to join us! Register today at
http://www.TimothLutheran.com/joining-jesus . We can’t wait to spend this time with you and see how God will use it. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Ryan @ ryanh@timothylutheran.com

Moving Forward Update

On Monday, April 3rd, Timothy’s Executive Board learned that the need to begin replacement of the Wyatt HVAC units is now immediate. There is a split in the heat exchanger, necessitating turning off the gas for safety. Heat in the school office areas, conference room, hallway bathrooms, and classroom 1100 was affected. Until the new control module and Roof Top Unit (RTU) 6 are replaced, space heaters may be needed if any cold snaps occur yet this spring. Previous bids are being updated ($40,000 for control module, $24,500 for RTU 6). The board authorized up to $70,000 from the designated fund at Truman Heartland Community Foundation for the HVAC units to fund this part of the projectPlease keep this need in your prayers. If you wish to financially support the total effort of replacing HVAC units at Wyatt, please designate your contributions as “Wyatt HVAC Unit Replacement.” Contributions can be made on Timothy’s website (Give tab) or by check payable to Timothy. Thank you very much!

The Next Generation Site-to-Site Task Force, Site & Space Planning Task Force, and Real Estate Task Forces are being tapped again for help carrying out plans started three years ago. Additional volunteers are always welcome! Please contact Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com) if you can help.

The RD Mize Campus appraisal process will begin next week with initial discussions with the appraiser who  conducted all previous Timothy appraisals and market summaries. Two organizations are interested in touring the facility soon.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:
Prayers of the Passion: Hosanna!

As we move into Holy Week, we see a prayer that was uttered by God’s people as Jesus rode into Jerusalem to meet His destiny. They called out to Him for help and salvation. We, too, add our voices to the cry of Hosanna! and ask Jesus to save us now as well.

God Hears Our Voice

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. Psalm 5:3
There is something powerful about starting our day with our hearts and minds fixed on Jesus. Whether you wake up before the sun ascends from the horizon or when it’s high in the sky. Whether you wake up perky and cheerful or groggy and grumpy, we get to choose the first thing we will do.
In Psalm 5, David declares with confidence that God hears his voice. We can have the same confidence. We can trust that whether we whisper or weep or shout or praise, God hears us.
So let’s follow the psalmist’s lead today and speak to the Lord. Let’s tell God what we need and wait expectantly for Him to answer.

The Executive Board thanks Timothy for its input and participation in these important decisions. Questions and discussions do not stop now; in fact, they are only just beginning. Leadership wants to follow up with all our brothers and sisters but especially those who may still be uneasy about the vote results. We do desire to have a sense of unity among all our church family even if we don’t always agree on decisions or directions. We also care for those who feel their voice may not be heard or that their concerns have been ignored. While we will move forward on the decisions made at the meeting Sunday, we also want to hear questions about the process that concern you. And we are also open to hearing about what you think may help support and offer encouragement to members who may still be uneasy about all of this. If you would like to share, please go to www.timothylutheran.com, click on Church, and then Next Generation to complete the Q & A opportunity still on the website. We will try to reply promptly, but please be patient. We look forward to seeing what God will do in and through us as His church as we continue to love Him and love each other.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:
Keep Watching

Today we stand alongside Ezekiel and take a look at a downright depressing view.  A valley of dusty, dry, and dormant bones.  It’s the kind of thing we can’t bear to watch or we don’t want to see.  Yet God meets us in the valley and wants us to keep watching.  Why?  Because He isn’t done yet!

God Loves to Help

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. James 1:5

These might be some of the most relief-giving words in the Bible. “If we don’t know what we’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help.” So often in life we don’t know what we’re doing! We don’t know what we’re doing with our career, with parenting a difficult child, with the church ministries and how to move forward. What Scripture is assuring us is that it’s okay not to know! Because God is here to help.

As you move through your day, if you’re lacking wisdom today, ask God for what you need! He is so kind, generous, and faithful to give it.

SHINE – Serving our Community

Join over 10,000 other LCMS members across the state of Missouri during SHINE week as we let our light SHINE in our community. You, along with family and friends, are invited to join us as we gather to help Agape Pamoja share in fellowship and express the love of Jesus with students on Saturday, April 15th, 1 pm – 5pm, Meet at Timothy Wyatt Campus.

Camp Twende, a Bible camp for Agape students, is a highlight for K-6th graders in this Agape Pamoja program. The camp includes games, food, a Bible lesson, and much more fun. It will be held in the Agape Pamoja event center in KC. There will be loud music and highly energetic kiddos, much like Timothy VBS openings and closings. Volunteers will sit on the floor and engage with the kiddos during games and in small groups. Typically, 80+ kiddos attend this event. If you enjoy seeing kids have fun while learning about God, sign up for this event!

Next Generation Update

THIS SUNDAY, March 26th, is the Special Voters’ Meeting at Wyatt Auditorium, immediately following the 10 am worship service. The meeting will be recorded and then uploaded on Timothy’s website on Monday, March 27. Voting will occur by written ballot with results shared before adjournment. Motions are as follows:
Meeting Motions

  1. Approval to place RD Mize Campus on the market.
  2. Approval for Executive Board authority to determine the fair market value for the RD Mize Campus and authority to accept such an offer that equals or exceeds fair market value.
  3. Approval for Executive Board authority to determine fair market value for Highway 7 frontage property and authority to accept such an offer that equals or exceeds fair market value.
  4. Approval of financing options for Wyatt HVAC units repair or replacement if member contributions do not cover the cost.

1.    Obtaining a Line of Credit from LCEF in the amount of $200,000.

2.    Obtaining a church Improvement Loan in the amount of $45,000.

When voters arrive for the meeting an/or exit the auditorium at conclusion of the 10 am service, they will register their attendance at the sign-in tables, receive an agenda & ballot, and proceed to the auditorium. At the conclusion of the discussion regarding the motions, voters will mark their ballots and give to meeting helpers(Executive Board, Elders, at-large members). If someone does not have a ballot when voting begins, he/she must exit and sign the attendance register  before receiving a ballot. Ballots will not be distributed in the auditorium. Congregational Secretary Charlie Johnson will announce number of registered voters in attendance. Two teams of Elders, Executive Board members, and at-large members will count the ballots and report final vote totals to Congregational President Diane Mayfield. Total number of votes should not exceed total number of registered voters in attendance. Voting process information will be posted at sign-in tables in lobby and be written on reverse side of agenda.

Recent questions/comments:
1. A huge complex of apartments is being built within two blocks of Timothy’s north site, across from St. Mary’s Medical Center. Hundreds of new residents are within walking distance. Is it possible that God called us to actively minister to this “harvest field”? Why not keep the north site for a few more years to explore this ministry opportunity?
Response: It is very exciting that new housing seems active again, especially in neighborhoods near churches. Timothy was recently approached by a developer building houses just south of Wyatt Road about partnering with new residents in that area as well.

2. I am all for the school but not for selling RD Mize  church. Look into finances of school pay for itself. Are scholarships given to member or future member of just anybody? Church attendance should be demanded.
Response: Timothy Lutheran School, an outreach ministry supported by the church, is meant to bring children closer to Christ. Families not regularly attending any church are prime examples of this outreach. If church attendance is mandated, we miss an opportunity for a child/family who currently does not know Christ. Scholarships to attend Timothy are offered to any family showing a financial need. Timothy does not require attendance on Sunday nor a specific tithe to receive the member tuition rate or tuition assistance. Scholarships make it possible for everyone to attend a Christian school not just those blessed with finances to pay the higher tuition associated with attending a private school. The TLS Scholarship Fund is funded through the annual auction, other fundraisers, and personal contributions. Over the past six years, school leadership has made great strides toward self-sufficiency because the past tuition discounts are no longer applicable. The church budget receives full tuition for every student, either through personal payments or scholarship funds.

3. The sale of the building at RD Mize will be a huge change for the congregation of Timothy Lutheran Church. When will we hear personal thoughts of pastors/executive board in our church services?
Response: The responses to the questions submitted by the congregation are the consensus of the Executive Board. As one person on the Executive Board, my (Diane Mayfield) personal thoughts follow. “There is no doubt that I love the RD Mize Campus, my “brick-and-mortar” church home for over 60 years. It is a place in which many memories will forever be special to my entire family. However, it is important for me to remember that the people of Timothy Lutheran Church are my “church”, not a brick-and-mortar building. Yes, it houses a beautiful sanctuary for worship and spacious rooms/areas for periodic  events/programs, but the ECC restructure and move to Wyatt greatly impacted daily activity at RD Mize Campus. It will not be easy to consolidate Timothy’s two campuses to one, but I long for Timothy Church to worship under one roof again. While I gravitate toward a traditional/blended worship style, when that is offered at Wyatt and I can hear the Word of God and receive the sacraments with my Timothy family in one place as the body of Christ, I will rejoice and pray that Timothy’s church family will flourish.”

4. Although not as large as 20 years ago, our church membership is in the hundreds. It is likely that some families will not be able to make the meeting on March 26 because of their jobs, family obligations or sickness. In fact, in church today (March 19), I heard the family beside me say exactly that. What is the process for those families to vote on this important issue? Are we offering mail-in or online voting, or something else?
Response: Until the church bylaws are amended to allow for absentee and/or online voting, in-person voting at the scheduled Voters’ Meetings is the only option.

It’s this amazing, incredible, eternal life-changing thing. And guess what? He is inviting and calling YOU to be a part of this eternally life-changing work. And that doesn’t require a theological degree or traveling around the world. He’s calling you (us) into your own community in very simple ways.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:
“Family Tree”

People take great pride in their family trees. They like to brag about this or that famous ancestor. Some people, though, take a step farther and think that somehow, their family tree gives them spiritual security. Jesus up-ends this notion in a very familiar story, one that reminds us that ultimately, our salvation rests, not in the branches of a family tree, but in the arms of the one who died on the cross for us.

Quiet Time

I’m sitting on my couch and reach for my Bible, running my hand down the pages, and close my eyes. Before I can even say hello to God, I find my mind wandering: What time is my appointment this afternoon?
Did I return that message? Maybe I should try that devotional I bought a few months ago.

“Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving him.” Mark 1:12-13

Thinking of Jesus, alone in the wilderness, being tempted by Satan and surrounded by wild animals. Now those are distractions and the ultimate temptation.

When we struggle to quiet our lives and our hearts enough to focus on God, Jesus knows exactly how we feel. And despite the desperate situation in which Jesus found Himself, He resisted temptation. The angels served Him, He leaned on His knowledge of Scripture and faith in God, and He resisted.

So, what does that mean for us? It means that not only is Jesus our goal when we set aside time for Him, He is our solution for fighting through all the distractions and temptations that work so hard to keep us away. It means that no matter how empty our personal wilderness may feel, we are not actually alone in our search for God. Just as the angels were with Him, Jesus is with us.

Immersive Prayer Journey

Prayer connects us with the Creator of the universe; yet if we’re honest, we don’t always know how to do it well or always make time for it. You are invited join us to go deeper in your relationship with our Lord through an Immersive Prayer Journey on Friday, March 10th (4-8pm) or Saturday, March 11th (9-4pm) at RD Mize.

Through a path of nine self guided stations of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, you will engage in prayer and reflection, Scripture readings, and simple activities, all intended to deepen your connection with our Savior, so make plans to come experience the prayer Jesus Himself taught us to pray.

The prayer journey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, but the pace is up to you. Couples and families with small children are welcome to take the journey together, if desired. Sign-ups are necessary for people to move smoothly through the journey. We are excited about the impact this will have on our lives.

Please go to the church website (Events) or church app (Events) to sign up for one slot per family. If there are more than three in the group, please sign up for an additional slot. Thank you! And please keep this experience in your prayers!

Adopt a Timothy Missionary

Have you heard about some Timothy senior high youth and their families heading to Tulsa in June for a mission trip? Are you interested in supporting them through prayer and funding as they experience what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus in and throughout the community?  In addition to checking out a more in-depth summary of this experience in last week’s Timothy Connects (which you can find on Timothy’s website also), check out the “Adopt a Missionary” display at either campus. You can choose an envelope of various donation denominations to help reach their $7,500 goal for the week’s expenses (June 10-16).  You can also contribute on Timothy’s website (Give tab, then Fund, then Youth Mission Trip—Praying Pelicans). Thanks for your support!

Joining Jesus on His Mission

Have you ever seen a life changed? And I don’t mean like in small, little ways. I’m talking about 180 degrees, darkness-to-light kind of changed? That’s exactly what Jesus does every single day. It’s this amazing, incredible, eternal life-changing thing. And guess what? He is inviting and calling YOU to be a part of this eternally life-changing work. And that doesn’t require a theological degree or traveling around the world. He’s calling you (us) into your own community in very simple ways.

Join us on April 29th from 9am-noon as we begin learning what it looks like to Join Jesus on His Mission and make an eternal difference. Stay tuned for more details soon. Contact Pastor Ryan (ryanh@timothylutheran.com) with questions.

Hillcrest Resident Update

We praise God that Timothy’s former resident, Dominia, has transitioned into the Hillcrest graduate program. She is so excited to have a car now and no longer depends upon Uber to get to work! We pray she continues to benefit from the Hillcrest program!

Timothy’s new resident, Rose, is so appreciative for the opportunity to save money and practice using a strict budget. She currently works from home but is aggressively searching for a new job for better pay. She does not have a car right now, so working from home is a good fit until she finds a different job. She asks for our prayers about her job search.

Thank you, Timothy, for your steadfast support of this ministry. It is an excellent example of transforming lives through Christ!

Next Generation Update

Please plan to attend the Special Voters’ Assembly Meeting on Sunday, March 26th, immediately following the 10am service in the Wyatt Auditorium. Agenda items include: 1) Approval to place RD Mize Campus on the market; 2) Approval for Executive Board authority to determine fair market value for Highway 7 frontage property and authority to accept such an offer that equals or exceeds fair market value; and 3) Approval of financing options for Wyatt HVAC units, if necessary, if funds are not received through donations.

A quorum of 40 members is required to conduct business. Voting will occur by written ballot with all three questions on one ballot for each voting member. According to Timothy’s bylaws, voters must be present at the meeting to vote.

Recent questions/comments:
1. Will all proceeds from sale of Highway 7 frontage property at Wyatt be used to pay down LCEF loan balance? Does LCEF require any sale proceeds be used to repay loan? How will the 6+ acre sale proceeds be used? Have we considered keep the Highway 7 property for a future church location?
Response: Leadership has asked LCEF these questions. They are researching and preparing for a meeting with Timothy’s leadership asap. Part of the consideration will be based on Timothy’s plans for the proceeds, two strong possibilities including replacement of HVAC units and storage facility at Wyatt. Keeping the frontage acreage for future church location may create logistical issues as a separate building but a consideration.

2. How is the Executive Board going to determine the fair market value (FMV) of Highway 7 frontage (6+ acres)? Why does the Executive Board need pre-authorization to accept an offer equal to or exceeding its established FMV?
Response:  A March 2020 market summary of both facilities and consultation with professional realtors will determine FMV. Large organizations like Timothy typically authorize a leadership group to research and make informed decisions.

3. What are the LCEF debt balances and debt payments by location?
Response:  Timothy’s three loans with LCEF were refinanced in 2014. The current mortgage amount is approximately 15% for RD Mize and 85% for Wyatt.

4. I completely agree with all of the items on the agenda for the Special Voters’ Meeting. I also greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts with Next Generation. I know we cannot continue to limp along financially trying to maintain two separate facilities. In addition, I was thinking a few years ago when we conducted the congregational survey, it resulted in the same conclusion. I pray that when the RD Mize facility is sold, everyone will continue to attend Timothy at the Wyatt Campus.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Three Triples

Genesis 3 is a foundational text for understanding why our world is the way it is and why we are the way we are. By examining the Three Triples of Genesis 3, we come to not only understand human sin better, but what God is all about when it comes to fixing the problem.

Giving Your Not-Enough

To live and make a difference, we have to exchange the way we see our not-enough for the way God sees I can’t help but think about the boy who gave his small lunch. You know the story: A huge crowd — five thousand men, plus all the women and children, all hungry. The disciple Andrew points out, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” (John 6:9).  In essence he’s saying, look at what we have — it’s something, but it’s not enough. Have you ever done this? You’re aware of a huge problem, you want to do something to help, but what you can do falls short.

“Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.’ So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.” John 6:10-13

This miracle of multiplication happened by God’s power! Only He could take a total lack and turn it into total satisfaction. But what started it all was one small act of obedience. We have the delightful opportunity to show up, give freely, and put the responsibility of the outcome squarely where it belongs — in God’s sovereign hands.

Thank you, Timothy Youth

Timothy’s middle and high school youth received the following note from Resource Health:
“Dear Timothy Lutheran Middle & High School Students,
Please forgive the delay in sending out your “thank-you” card. Thank you for your most generous gift of items for our New Mom Care Packages. Your giving has blessed our new moms and given them encouragement. Thank you for allowing God to use you for His glory.

His for Life,
Debbie”

Adopt a Missionary

Our senior high families are heading to Tulsa this summer to be the hands and feet of Jesus in and throughout the community.  It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to grow in faith, community, and learn more of what it means to Join Jesus on His Mission.  BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP.  We are trying to raise about $7,500 to cover the full costs of the trip.  If you are willing, grab an “Adopt a Missionary” envelope in the Narthex with a $ dollar amount on it.  Then place cash or a check in the envelope with that amount of $ or more with a note saying “YOUTH MISSION TRIP.”  Want to know more…

Your donation will help fund lodging (staying at a local church on the floor but they provide pads and showers etc. for us), travel (gas, rental car if needed), meals, small emergency fund, extra mission projects, one local outing, and to support our onsite coordinator in Tulsa.

Our Timothy Lutheran Youth Family Church team will be serving through a mission organization called Praying Pelicans.  Our partnership with Praying Pelicans allows us to support a long term relationship through sustainable ministry within these communities we will be going to.  The mission trip will allow us to serve alongside a local church in Tulsa that is deeply involved in their community and seeking to address real needs.  Our Timothy team will be the hands, feet, and heart on behalf of the church to the community. Our teams desire is to work with youth in various capacities such as sports camps, VBS programs, youth ministries, or other needs that are unfolding in the community we will be in.  These opportunities will allow the local churches to continue to connect with new families and share the love of Christ with them.  We are currently working with Praying Pelicans and the local church we will be teamed up with to figure out all the details in the coming months.

Next Generation Update

The congregation is reminded that the upcoming Special Voters’ Meeting will be Sunday, March 26th, starting after end of Wyatt service in the Auditorium. Items of the agenda include: 1) Approval to place RD Mize Campus on the market; 2) Approval for Executive Board authority to determine fair market value for Highway 7 frontage property and authority to accept such an offer that equals or exceeds fair market value; and 3) Approval of financing options for Wyatt HVAC units, if necessary,  if funds not received through donations.

A quorum of 40 communicant members is necessary to conduct business. A written ballot will be provided to each voting member with all three questions placed on the same ballot, Voting results will be announced before meeting concludes. Questions and comments may be submitted on Timothy’s website (www.timothylutheran.com click on church, then Next Generation) or by completing a written form in the Suggestion Box at Information Center at each campus.

The following questions were submitted last week:

  1. It has been communicated through leadership that, current amount of debt, building  will occur when funds are available. What is the current amount of debt, specifically how many years are left on the current mortgage? I know in some years past, there were interest-only payments. Did this change the length of the mortgage?

Response: The Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) holds Timothy’s mortgage. Updated figures from LCEF this week list the balance of our mortgage at $5,932,300.36. Monthly payments of principal & interest equal $35,294.74. In 2022, interest-only payments were submitted for Jan. through May, but a $25,000 payment toward principal was sent in May before the Executive Board approved resuming principle & interest payments for remainder of 2022. In 2022, the total interest paid was $221,537.56, and the total principal paid was $127,531.74. In January 2023, our interest rate increased from 3.625% to 4.25%. LCEF figures Timothy’s amortization schedule on a twelve-month basis.

2.  What can be done to address the “negative” impressions held by our fellow Christians so that they are valued and not dismissed as “those we will lose no matter what we do”?

Response: This entire process is difficult and will likely never be easy, The Special Voters’ Meeting and input leading up to  it is what we are trying to achieve to obtain a consensus of as many members as possible. The next Executive Board meeting is March 6th, at which time the board will discuss additional ways to include as many members as possible.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
Mad Prayers”

Our idea of prayer is often bound in a calm approach to our gracious God.  But sometimes the emotions are running high.  If we search the Psalms, we find prayers that are not only intense but emotion-filled.  Today we look at some shocking words that flow from the mouth of David in prayer as we wrestle with the question, “What are we supposed to do with these hostile-feeling prayers?”

Recall God’s Faithfulness

Will You Remember the Gift or the Giver?
It was Valentine’s Day this week. I am a horrible gift giver to my husband, but he continues to be my knight in shining armor. I hope he doesn’t hold my gifts against me but instead looks at the giver.
God knows that human hearts can easily become so focused on the gifts that we forget the Giver. “When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would give you — a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build, houses full of every good thing that you did not fill them with, cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant — and when you eat and are satisfied, be careful not to forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.” Deuteronomy 610-12.”

The Israelites would enjoy occupying safe cities and beautiful homes, having access to water and a variety of delicious foods. These blessings would be an intense contrast to their forty years of living in tents in the wilderness. But be careful, God said. Don’t forget Me. I’m the One who made your freedom and flourishing possible. The One you still need — in times of plenty and in times of want.

We, too, need to accept God’s gentle warning today. Take time today to remember what God has done in your life. Thank Him. And recommit to living dependent on Him.

Next Generation Update

1. Will the north site worshipers be assured that, if and when all worship is at south sit only, there will be a service offered that will be the same as currently presented—in style, music, robed clergy, etc.?
Response:  Absolutely, the intention is to offer a service as close to the RD Mize worship experience as possible, including style, hymns & songs, robed clergy, etc. It will certainly require some adjustments, and people may need to adapt to some things not quite “matching” with RD Mize, but we would work to make it as close as possible. Wyatt worshipers may also need to adapt to some things not quite “matching” the current format as well. Logistics such as worship times, transition times between services, and possibly offering service on different day are examples of those adjustments.

2. If and when the north site is sold, will items from the north site be removed and used at south site, such as altar, suspended cross, candles, banners, baptismal font, lectern, pulpit?
Response:  Yes, these items can be moved to Wyatt for use at all services with specific logistics, such as placement, incorporation with current Wyatt structures, and storage as needed.

3. If the north site is sold before any construction takes place at south site, how will all the ministry activities at north be met, such as location for funerals, daytime Bible study groups, evening events that might conflict with evening school events, etc.?
Response:  This is a great question and one of the most challenging. It will take cooperation and Christian understanding from everyone to move forward in ministries to build God’s kingdom for all generations. It undoubtedly will look different, in some cases much different. Some activities like Bible Studies and Small Group Meetings are great opportunities to meet offsite, providing a more loving and caring environment for its members. Other offsite resolutions for larger groups may require partnering with other local churches or venues. Some ministries can use the larger classrooms in the evenings. If extra space is needed as soon as within the next year, one-half of the second trailer will be available for meeting/event space and/or storage until it is needed as a classroom. On-site funerals can be held in the auditorium with the style and setting presently provided at RD Mize or Wyatt. Continuation of funeral luncheons, as we now know them, will be challenging, requiring significant creative thinking, but not impossible to overcome.

4. Since mobile classrooms are meeting the needs of the school ministry for 5 years (?) or more, wouldn’t it make sense to build a sanctuary as the next step of moving all ministries to the south campus?
Response:  In the original Readiness Committee work, leadership prepared future expansion plans to include a small, 100-seat chapel as the highest priority in the first phase of construction. However, based on the results of the 2020 congregational survey which showed high priority for overall children, youth, and school ministry, plan for the chapel were placed in the second phase and would also include a kitchen, dining room/worship space for approximately 150 people, office space, youth rooms, conference rooms, and hallways. The first phase then became additional classrooms for church and school use. A large sanctuary to seat 600+ people is currently in phase three. At this time, we understand the City of Blue Springs allows 5 years for use of mobile classrooms but may be flexible if permanent classrooms are under construction or soon will be.  The 2020 congregational survey may be found on Timothy’s website (click on Church, then Next Generation) or by clicking on this link: Next Gen Survey.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
Prayers of the Saints: Paul’s Prayer”

Paul once asked God for help. He has a thorn in his flesh, something that he desperately wants to get rid of. But God doesn’t give him what he wants. Why? Because God is trying to teach Paul something about faith. It’s a lesson we can grow from as well.

Recall God’s Faithfulness

I attended a Celebration of Life this weekend. Many of my children’s friends were in attendance. What a blessing to be together even for this challenging moment. It was in the church where these young adults were children. I recalled welcoming them as a Sunday School teacher with a hug, where we sang Jesus loves me, and where God poured the Holy Spirit into each of their lives.  It was good to take time to recall and recount God’s faithfulness.
It is good for all of us to recall what God has done in our lives, especially when we didn’t know what He was doing at the time. There are big moments we each recognize as pivotal moments where God led and we knew if He didn’t show up, His plans wouldn’t work. Jesus has done miracles in our lives.
Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36:5
Remember, God is faithful. Take time to recall. He is leading us on the greatest adventure with Him. And we can respond with obedience and loving faithfulness.

“2023 LENT”

Ash Wednesday Feb. 22; two services with Holy Communion (4pm & 6:30pm) at RD Mize

The Lenten season is approaching quickly. Make plans to take care of your dinner plans on some of the Wednesdays during Lent. You’ll not only enjoy home-cooked meals but also the fellowship with your Timothy family. Come to the Family Life Center between 5 & 7pm each evening (Lenten worship service starts at 5:30pm). Free-will donations are gladly accepted. The ministry groups greatly appreciate your support.

  • Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22:  LWML Ham Dinner (proceeds benefit mites (10%) and Church Worker Professional Development (90%). Donations to Church Worker Professional Development will support Timothy’s called staff with expenses for conferences and workshops attended on Timothy’s behalf.
  • Wednesday, March 1 (Lasagna):  2023 Summer Youth Mission Trip in which 15 individuals from Timothy will travel to Tulsa, OK, from June 10-16, to work with the Praying Pelicans mission organization in serving alongside a local church in Tulsa that is deeply invested in their community and seeking to address real needs. Our Timothy team will be the hands, feet, and heart on behalf of the church to the community as they work with youth in sports camps, VBS programs, and youth ministries. These opportunities will allow the local churches to continue to connect with new families and share the love of Christ with them. The goal for Timothy’s group is to raise $7,500 to cover working with an onsite Praying Pelicans team member, travel (gas, rental car if needed), meals, lodging (staying at a local church on the floor but pads and showers are provided), and a small emergency fund. Timothy’s youth thanks the congregation for its prayerful and financial support thus far and looks forward to a successful Lenten Dinner fellowship and fundraiser opportunity.
  • Wednesday, March 8 (Pizza):  Timothy Lutheran School Scholarship Fund School ministry always appreciates the opportunity to offer scholarships to families needing financial assistance to send their children to TLS. Generous support of this Lenten Dinner opportunity will augment other fundraisers such as the Annual Auction. It is a blessing to support school families with this financial assistance.
  • Wednesday, March 22 (Sloppy Joe’s):  Festival Committee In addition to the annual Timmy Burger Booth at the Fall Fun Fest, from which proceeds fund non-budgeted facility needs, Timothy’s Festival Committee is hosting a Lenten Dinner to contribute to the repair of the elevator at RD Mize to bring it back to functionality. Thank you for your support to make this a reality.

Contact Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com) to reserve one of the open dates for Lenten Dinners.

More details soon.

Contact Pastor Ryan (ryanh@timothylutheran.com) with questions.

Next Generation Update

Thank you to those who have submitted questions and comments regarding the three topics on the agenda for the Special Voters’ Assembly Meeting on March 26th. Over the next seven weeks, the Executive Board will provide short responses to a few each week in Timothy Connects. Questions may be submitted online at www.timothylutheran.com (Church tab, then Next Generation tab) or placed in Suggestion Box at Information Center at each campus.

Please plan to attend this special meeting, as a quorum of 40 communicant members ages 18 & over is required to conduct business. The meeting will start a few minutes after the close of the 10am service. Timothy’s current bylaws stipulate that members must be present to vote: “It shall be the privilege and duty of every voting member to attend the Assembly meetings. By failing to attend such meetings, a member waives the right to cast his/her vote during that meeting.” (Article B-1, B2) Until such time that a possible amendment is written & approved to allow and provide for electronic voting, absentee voting of any format is not available. Voting will be by secret ballot with each of the three proposals listed separately on one ballot per voting member. Final tallies will be announced before meeting adjourns.

Questions /comments submitted so far relate to the proposal about placing RD Mize Campus on the market. They fall under the following general categories:  Worship Accommodations, Space for Events/Meetings, Timing, Storage Accommodations, and Perceptions.

Below are a few of the questions/comments with short responses. Additional ones will be addressed in the upcoming weeks.

  1. Will updated info about proposal to sell RD Mize, including how we arrived at the decision to do so at this time and what comes next, be shared prior to the March 26 vote?
Response: As background, in fall 2019, Timothy asked, “Is it time to consolidate to Wyatt?” At the time, Timothy received unsolicited inquiries about buying RD Mize, finances/debt was/is significant, and Timothy’s 2020 Vision (developed in 2013) included goals to create a transition plan for one campus ministry at Wyatt. A Next Generation Steering Committee was formed. Surveys were developed, administered, and collected. The membership survey results supported one campus at Wyatt. Task force teams, composed of many Timothy members, were organized to analyze and make recommendations about various aspects of the transition. Several cottage meetings were held to gather congregational input. Three mission focus areas were adopted (Children & Youth, Member Involvement, and Community Outreach), all of which have advanced with the call of a Children & Youth Minister, prayer emphases, and Joining Jesus on His Mission (unfolding soon). Just as the cottage meetings were wrapping up, COVID hit and changed all our lives, including next steps regarding many Timothy ministries. Members are encouraged to review results of survey and other Next Generation documents on Timothy’s website(Click on Church, then Next Generation). With the return of a degree of normalcy over the past several months, leadership continues to grapple with the same situation as pre-COVID and recommends moving forward with the plan now. The Isaiah 43:19 verse, “See, I am doing a new thing!” continues to guide leadership in moving forward.
  1. Would you consider a large warehouse building without electricity for storage built by members or Laborers for Christ?  How do you propose to complete more storage space at Wyatt for all things at RD Mize?

Response: Timothy is blessed to accept a member’s offer to store items in his personal storage facility. Leadership is investigating possibility of renting storage space at a local church. Laborers for Christ, a ministry of the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, discontinued operations on June 30, 2021. In addition, constructing a large storage building is beyond the capability of 99.9% of Timothy members, and the potential for injury could be significant. It would be difficult for Timothy members to meet the City requirements to self-perform the permitting and constructing details. Inventorying and deciding what items can be donated, sold, or discarded due to non-use for a long time will be necessary. It is also possible that necessary items will need to be stored in members’ homes on an interim basis.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
Prayers of the Saints: Jeremiah’s Prayer”

: Sometimes life just gets to be too much for us. Like the prophet Jeremiah, we may feel like it’s all too much and we may not be sure how to express that frustration to God. But Jeremiah gives us the example and the key of how we can go through that pain and anguish in a way that remains faithful to God.

“The Gifts Waiting in Your Coldest Winter

Why do I live where the air hurts my face?” This cold snap keeps most of us indoors, unless absolutely necessary.
“If you choose not to find joy in the cold, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of cold.” So for two minutes, on this frigid morning, I stood outside and beheld
the beauty. The stillness was breath taking.
We all need that reminder, and I don’t mean primarily for the winter seasons that happen outside our door – but for the winter seasons that happen inside of our hearts and homes. In life, our very souls shiver inside the iceboxes of disappointment and despair.

So what are we to do in the unavoidable winter seasons of the soul? The Apostle Paul wintered. In one such wintering, Paul spent months on an island where he encountered people who were unusually kind. They built a fire and welcomed him because it was so cold (Acts 28:2). Paul’s wintering seasons gave him three key gifts: safe harbor, opportunities to share Jesus in a different kind of way, and moments of abiding with others.
Instead of figuring out how to escape cold seasons, perhaps we can learn how to winter well within them. To see winter seasons as safe harbors. To encounter Jesus in unexpected ways. To gather around cozy fires. To abide.

Livestreaming Wyatt Service

Over the past few weeks, the livestreaming function of the Wyatt service has experienced some challenges. Timothy thanks Rod Brehm for his expertise and passion to convert the 10am service to YouTube. After much research and experimentation, Rod believes the service will be successfully available through the following channel link:  www.YouTube.com/TimothyLutheranMinistries
Please understand that it may not be perfect this Sunday, so we ask your patience as a learning curve may occur for a while. Thank you, Rod, for your perseverance and willingness to make this happen for Timothy!

If you would like to be a Baby STEPs recipient or volunteer, please contact Kaye Gray at 816.585.6530 or kgray1024@gmail.com.

Card Club

Tired of the winter blahs? Love to play 10-Point Pitch?  Make plans to attend the revival of Timothy’s Card Club on Friday, Feb. 10, at 7pm in the RD Mize Fellowship Hall. You can look forward to lots of fun and fellowship. Please bring a snack to share and a drink. For more information, please contact Art MacLean (660-641-1974).

Worshiping Faithfully in Uncertain Times

Although we do not like to think about the risk of violent acts or emergency situations occurring within the church walls, preparation for them is essential. Timothy’s leadership is committed to forming a Church Safety & Security Team to better provide an atmosphere of comfort, refuge, worship, and learning for those that enter our church walls and church events, recognizing the value of its people and facilities and embracing their safety and security.
No church should assume that “it will not happen here” as that attitude contradicts what Matthew says in Chapter 10, verse 16: “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about this new team please contact Team Leader Don McGhee (donm@timothylutheran.com) or Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com). Those with background experience or special interest in the medical field, military, facility or property management, human resources, law, law enforcement, insurance, and safety/security protocols are urged to step forward to share their interest and expertise. Thank you!

LUMAA Community Outreach Project

LUMAA met for their January meeting at Ascension Lutheran Church.  Shelia Rancatore from Cornerstones of Care shared how the organization serves as an umbrella with groups we are familiar with:  Ozanam, Merilac, Gillis and Swaffort, and over 35 more groups Missouri wide.  These groups work with children including those going into foster care.  These children often come to them with nothing , which prompted LUMMA  to gather supplies, including hygiene items, personal items, diaries, books, blankets, toys, games, cosmetics, pens and markers, stuffed animals, and many more.  The LUMAA members’ churches, including Timothy’s LWML, were very generous!  As a hands-on community outreach project at the meeting, twelve duffle bags for
children of all ages, were filled and delivered to Gillis Home, whose staff there was very excited and thankful to receive them.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Prayers of the Saints: Jonah’s Prayer”

Jonah’s story is familiar to us. We know all about the wrong-way prophet who tries to hide from God instead of going to Nineveh. But what we may not realize is that, during that three day stay in a fish’s stomach, Jonah spent the time in prayer. He’s hit rock bottom because of his mistakes. His prayer can show us what true repentance looks like.

For His Faithful Love to Us Is Great: A Devotion

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Colossians 3:2
What do you spend your time thinking about? Our answer is probably a long list of hope and dreams, fleeting worries and deep concerns. Scripture calls us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things.
This begs the question: what is above?
Heaven. God’s full presence. His power. His throne room where He hears our prayers. The Father’s house with many rooms, which He is preparing for us right now. A place of healing. A place without tears. A place of wonder and worship. Forever love. Forever belonging.
We don’t even need to answer the second implied question (what are earthly things?). We are keenly aware of our troubles and sorrow, the brokenness that surrounds us. God isn’t calling us to ignore these things or pretend they aren’t real or don’t have an immediate impact on our lives. Rather, He is inviting us to set our minds — fix our thoughts, determine our focus — on Him, despite what’s happening here on earth. Because He is where our hope and joy are.

Middle School “Cereal Bowl”

Cereal Bowl Twelve kids brought their spoons for some CEREAL-ously good times last Friday night.  From 5-9pm we hosted a night of cereal games, breakfast, and some sheer chaos.  It was enveloped by some devotions reflecting on how God meets us in our highs and lows, feeds us, gives us rest, and then sends us back out.  Tony the Tiger even agreed, it was “Greeeeeeeeeeeat!”

PRAYER WALL

As we continue our theme of prayer at Timothy, we have an opportunity over the next two months to allow our students and teachers at Timothy Lutheran School to pray for us!

Check out the Prayer Wall in the lobby at each campus, grab a colorful piece of paper near the Prayer Wall, and write a prayer request that our kids can be in prayer with you. Then roll it up and place on the Prayer Wall. Pastor Ryan will distribute them to classrooms so can pray without ceasing together!

             Next Generation Moving Forward
Following  the Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting on Dec 4, 2022, the Executive Board continues to prepare to move to one campus. A Special Voters’ meeting is set for Sunday, March 26, at 11:30 am in the Wyatt Auditorium. As announced in the Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting, the agenda includes the following topics:

  • Approval to place RD Mize Campus on the market
  • Approval for Executive Board authority to determine fair market value for Highway 7 frontage property and authority to accept such an offer that equals or exceeds fair market value
  • Approval of financing options for Wyatt HVAC units, if necessary, if funds not received through donations

Congregational input about these topics is vital. Prior to the March 26th meeting, the Executive Board encourages Timothy members to submit specific questions about any of the above topics for Timothy’s leadership (Executive Board, Board of Elected Elders, Pastors) to address prior to the meeting on March 26th. Questions may be submitted at www.timothylutheran.com (click on Church, then Next Generation). Printed copies of the simple form may also be found at the Information Centers at both campuses and placed in the Suggestion Box. These may remain anonymous, if desired. Thank you!

If you would like to be a Baby STEPs recipient or volunteer, please contact Kaye Gray at 816.585.6530 or kgray1024@gmail.com.
