Slaves or Free?”

We love to throw around the word “freedom.” We treasure our freedom as Americans and we know that God has set us free in Christ. But far too often, we abuse that freedom. We return to the sin from which God has redeemed us. What we don’t realize is that we are making ourselves slaves of the very forces from which God has saved us. Thankfully, Jesus is the one who sets us free from sin and death through His grace and redemption. He is the one who empowers us to live as truly free people!.

It’s Time to Experience the Lord’s Goodness

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8

God’s goodness isn’t something we are meant to simply acknowledge intellectually or believe theologically. Rather, God wants us to actively experience His goodness. “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” the psalmist encourages. It’s a call to engage our most human senses in order to recognize and enjoy our divine Creator.

As summer is upon us, look for opportunities to taste and see that which reflects God’s goodness. Savor a cold glass of homemade lemonade or bite into a juicy piece of watermelon. Enjoy watching red tomatoes grow in the garden or the summer sunset along the horizon with streaks of gold, pink, and dusty violet.

Let everything we taste and see become a reminder to turn in thanks to the Giver of all good things. Let His goodness compel us to seek refuge in Him.

Volunteer: It’s a Great Way to Give Back!

Vacation Bible School | July 10-14, 2023
Time & Location | 8:45am – 12pm | RD Mize Campus

Volunteering and supporting Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a great way to give back to our community and make a difference in the lives of others. For us at Timothy, it’s Transforming Lives through Christ. It can also be a lot of fun and rewarding.
The hard truth is that we are currently at a critical time and far behind in volunteer sign ups. We truly need you to help us make a difference in the lives of those Jesus brings to Timothy! This year VBS is July 10-14.  We are grateful for all volunteers, both during the week of VBS as well as those who help with all of the preparation.

How can you help? Students will be going through stations with their group leaders: Pilot and Co-pilot.  We will have Bible Adventure time to learn the Bible stories and work on their verse for the day. The pilot and co-pilot are discussion facilitators rather than teachers leading the whole lesson.  A Cinema stop will also be on the rotation, along with games, crafts and snacks – additional opportunities to serve.  Decorations and the opening/closing music group (Cabin Fever) are also wonderful ways to serve, making the whole week an even bigger WOW for everyone.  We thank you for your willingness to help in the way(s) that you feel called.

Adopt-A-Student helps Timothy provide Vacation Bible School free to all students!

Each year we seek loving people to help financially support Children’s Ministry through our VBS Adopt-A-Student program. Did you know that many churches charge students to attend VBS? Your financial gift goes a long way to help Timothy provide a free Vacation Bible School experience to all kids in our community. In the RD Mize and Wyatt lobbies you will find Adopt-A-Student envelopes for your convenience, or you can go online through the Timothy website or app. Your gift is greatly appreciated.

Crossways Bible Study

Crossways is coming back! Pastor John will once again lead this two-year journey through the entire Bible on Tuesday nights, starting on Sept. 12th, from 6:30-8pm at the RD Mize Campus. The class already boasts several enrollees, so please join this group by registering by August 15 on Timothy’s app or website to assist staff in planning. Invite your friends! Joining Jesus on His Mission: Red, White and Blue Springs

It’s time to Join Jesus on His Mission over the upcoming holiday weekend! This year, the revitalized Blue Springs Ministerial Alliance is coordinating events for kids in conjunction with the Red, White, and Blue Springs event on Saturday, July 1st, at Blue Springs South High School. We will share His Mission by hosting a simple, fun fishing game in the “kid zone” that allows kids to win small prizes. Consider signing up for one of two shifts (5:30 – 7:15 pm or 7:15 – 9pm) AND THEN stay for the always-amazing, free fireworks show! Timothy’s Missionaries Welcomed Home

After months of planning, some of Timothy’s youth and their adult counselors spent a productive and fulfilling week transforming lives in Tulsa last week. They returned home last Friday and look forward to personally thanking Timothy and sharing highlights in both worship services this Sunday, June 25th. The youth on this trip included Malinda & Morgan Anderson, Elizabeth & Emily Storck, Marisa Gregory, Molly Hyden, Emily Poynter, Kamryn Gray, Addison Cross, and Kash Cantrell. Adult counselors were Julie & Gary Storck, Kristen Anderson, and Pastor Ryan. Thanks again, Timothy, for your prayerful and financial support of this opportunity to Transform Lives through Christ, not only for the Praying Pelicans ministry in Tulsa but also for Timothy’s missionaries participating in this venture. Praise Be to God!

Timothy’s Tithes Appreciated

Timothy’s commitment to Join Jesus on His Mission through tithing to local, regional, national, and international opportunities is always acknowledged and appreciated. Recently the following updates and thank-you letters were received:

  • Barb Rebentisch in Taiwan reports that visits with Haley for over a year have led Haley to accept a Bible and a “lesson plan” in reading it:  Read Genesis and Exodus, then skip over to the New Testament to read the gospels. (Might be a plan for all of us??)  Barb and Haley plan to meet for lunch once or twice a week to discuss what she is reading.
  • As a follow-up to Barb’s work, Mission Central also sent a separate letter, thanking Timothy for its support of Barb’s missionary work. Here is a small excerpt from that letter: “Thank you for your gift of May 25, 2023, in the amount of $321.19 for the direct support of your missionary teacher, Barbara Rebentisch in Taiwan. She is truly an amazing lady, and God is using her in a wonderful way because she can speak the Mandarin language. We couldn’t keep her at her calling without God-sending congregations like yours. Please remember to keep Barbara in your altar prayers.”
  • St. Paul Lutheran High School in Concordia, MO, thanks Timothy for its recent tithe of $321.19 to help fuel their mission:  planting seeds within students to know God’s love and mercy, which is an awesome responsibility to share Christ as they are immersed in campus life.
  • In its recent thank-you letter to Timothy for our tithe of $535.31, Hillcrest shared a success story about one of its residents, Lacy, and her two teenage sons who lived at a hotel for almost a year. To survive, Lacy picked up dental assistant jobs all over KCMO until landing a full-time position at KC Smiles. Living in a hotel with no kitchen forced her family to eat fast-food meals. At Hillcrest, she learned about creating meal plans and preparing grocery lists to help stretch her dollars. She soon was able to pay off old utility debts and learn to live within her means. It paid off because she now rents a two-bedroom home in the KC metro area. As a reminder of its mission and gratitude to congregations like Timothy, Hillcrest concluded its letter with, “Hillcrest is honored to have walked with Lacy and her sons on her journey to self-sufficiency. Your support makes this possible. Thank you!”

Thank you, Timothy, for your prayers and financial support for Timothy’s operating budget, without which these tithes are not possible. To God Be All Glory and Praise!

TLS Summer Care

The TLS Summer Care program is well underway! Forty students are registered for various days throughout the week. They are engaged in curricular activities designed to bridge the gap between end of school to the beginning of the new school year. Included in the program are special field trips for students in grades K-4, such as KC Zoo, Fun Run in BS, Extreme Cheer in Oak Grove, and Kauffman Stadum tour. Pre-school students enjoy special days on campus, such as Bike Day, Electronic Day, and Water Day. All students continue to learn about God and getting ready for the next school year. The Summer Care program runs through August 11th.

Timothy’s Seniors Enjoy Picnic

The annual Senior Ministry Pairs & Spares Picnic welcomed 40 seniors to enjoy an indoor picnic this past Tuesday in the Family Life Center. Great food, fellowship, and fun!

Pointe of Hope Patio Concert Timothy is invited to join Pointe of Hope (1215 NW Hwy 7) for their concerts on the fourth Saturday evening through September. The next concert will feature jazz artist Will Matthews TOMORROW, June 24, from 7-9:30pm. The concerts are free and open to the entire family.

Lutheran High School— KC needs families or individuals to host an international student for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. Both boys and girls from a variety of countries are applying to LHSKC, but more hosts are needed. Please contact Tamara Smith at Lutheran High (816) 241-5478) to find out more about host responsibilities and rewards.

Fireworks Lighthouse Fireworks, who will operate a tent again on Timothy’s Wyatt property near Highway 7, thanks Timothy for agreeing to rent that corner for its tent. They offer Timothy members a 20% discount on fireworks purchases this year, with proceeds benefiting My Brother’s Keeper Network, a non-profit which helps women & children subjected to domestic violence and anyone needing food and security. The tent runs from June 30 through July 4th, open from 8am to 11pm on June 30 through July 2 and from 8am to midnight or 1am on July 3 and 4. Members should take a June 25 or July 2 Sunday bulletin or today’s or next Friday’s (June 23 or 30) electronic or printed copy of Timothy Connects to receive the discount. Thank you!

Donations Requested: Clean plastic bags and reusable cloth or plastic bags, if available, are appreciated for the staff at Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary(LUMAA) to package food for its clients. Please place donations in clear tub in RD Mize mailbox area. Thank you very much!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus:
 What God Wants”

What do you want? It can be a fun question, or it can be a difficult question to not only ask but answer. In our relationship with God, we may wonder what it is He wants from His people. He wants us to seek His face, to walk with Him, and then to show mercy to those we know.

A Call for the Weary and Worried

Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. Isaiah 42:10

Have you ever laughed at Scripture? Not because it’s funny but because the chances of you putting it into action are unlikely. Isaiah 42:10 is a call to sing a new song; to raise our voices, rejoice, sing for joy, and proclaim His praise. But when we’re struggling to get through the day, it’s not quite so simple or easy.

Many of us find ourselves feeling wearier and more worried than overflowing with worship and wonder. Financial worries, grief, loss, parenting struggles, or a fragile marriage, among many other unnamed cares, can weigh us down.

It’s tempting to think Isaiah 42:10 is a text for when life is all rainbows and butterflies, not stress and struggle. But it’s exactly moments like this — when life is hard, we’re tired and want things to change — that this text is for. When Isaiah spoke these words to the people of Israel, they were again in captivity, and the people were worn out and worried beyond belief. Yet in the middle of these tough times, God calls them to sing a new song — to burst forth in joy, hope, and peace in the darkness.

I quietly hum “Amazing Grace” as I walk into the hospital for a visit, and I realize the victory and freedom this grace has given me. No matter what we face or how tired and anxious we are, we can sing a new song or an old one. We can exchange our weariness and worry for worship as we find God in our darkest places.

Timothy Tithes Appreciated

Over the past several months, Timothy intentionally promoted some of the many organizations receiving our 10% tithe in the form of prayers in worship, through the weekly emailed prayers, and postcards distributed after worship on first Su7ndays. Letters of appreciation like the one below affirm our commitment to tithing. Thank you for continuing to pray for missions here locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. They all appreciate our prayers and financial  support. Just one way to join Jesus on His Mission!

“Thank you, dear saints in Blue Springs,
I am incredibly grateful for your ongoing prayers and financial support! Last Thursday evening, before we began our Chinese class (reading Luke’s gospel), my dear friend/Chinese teacher, Kass had an “ah ha” moment.  We were talking about my deaconess studies, and I showed her the first commandment with its meaning that I was memorizing for class.  Kass read it with a question mark in her voice, as if it were hard to believe: “No other gods?!”

I think that it was Kass’s first moment of realizing that Christians have only one God and are not just adding Jesus to a collection of other go-to gods.  Most of the Taiwanese have a god for business, a god for fishermen, a god for farmers as well as praying to their ancestors for their own earthly peace and for their ancestors’ well-being in the afterlife.

Please join me in praying that God will continue His good work in Kass’s heart and bring her to complete understanding, faith and joyful salvation in Jesus.

Stewardship Team Update

On May 21st, the Stewardship Team presented a brief explanation after the worship services about Tax-Advantaged Giving to help Timothy members consider how wise stewardship practices can benefit both members and Timothy. If you were unable to attend the session that day, please stop by the Information Center at either campus to pick up printed materials which may be helpful in planning. You will find information about “donating your IRA distributions to a charity,” ” your required minimum distributions: we’ll help you make the most of the money you must withdraw,”  and “qualified charitable distributions: support your favorite causes with IRA distributions” as well as the introductory information from the Stewardship Team about topics for future sessions. Stay tuned for the next quarterly stewardship session, and please contact any of the Stewardship Team members if you have questions (Dave Domsch, Gary Flandermeyer, Mel Falk, Doug Spilker,  Joe Sauter, and Doug Hick).

Bump City Update

Last Friday, Timothy kiddos and friends showed up to bump at Bump City, to the tune of 100 in number! What a fun opportunity to share the love of Jesus! Mixed in with lots of playing, they enjoyed pizza and snacks. It was a great way to kick off the summer together!

Youth Ministry Summer Adventures

Sr High: A group of senior high kiddos and adults are heading to Tulsa on our mission trip Tomorrow, June 10th through Friday, June 16th. Jr & Sr High: It’s time to chillax and float down the river together!  It’ll be a full-day outing on June 26th from about 7:30am-8pm as we head down to the Niangua River and swim, float, and row row row our boats.  Cost will be $35.  Scholarships are available.   Adult drivers/chaperones needed also.  RSVP by June 16th to Pastor Ryan.  Ryanh@timothylutheran.com

All children & youth:  VBS is coming at you July 10-14th.  Kids pre-k through 5th are welcome to sign up for a Stellar week of fun Sign up to attend here! Those 6th  grade and up are encouraged to sign up to help for this joy-filled, intense week of Jesus. Volunteer sign up! We will have middle school swim talks that week as well on Tuesday and Thursday!  And a Sr. High BBQ Wednesday night! Invite your friends and neighbors!

Pairs & Spares Seniors Picnic

All seniors are invited to the annual Pairs & Spares picnic on June 20th in the Family Life Center (FLC).  Bring a dish to share for the potluck luncheon and enjoy fellowship with friends. GriefShare Update

Timothy’s current GriefShare session recently completed, and we thank God for Pam Lund’s commitment as its facilitator for the past three years. What a blessing her leadership has been to many people coping with various kinds of grief! The next GriefShare session will begin this fall, and we look forward to offering this ministry to many more people. Next Generation Update

The second TLS trailer was delivered this past Monday, June 5th, with no problems. Timothy’s staff is now waiting for the leasing company to complete the set-up process so that electrical and plumbing work can proceed as soon as possible. The goal is to prepare the trailer for occupancy by end of June.

Discussions continue with interested partiesd about the sale of RD Mize. The Real Estate Task Force is also researching commercial real estate brokers and attorneys for possible assistance when needed.

Feel free to stop by the “free tables” in lobby at RD Mize to select many additional items. The congregation is also welcome to stop by the Children’s Library (Room 304) and Adult Library (Room 303) to select books or other materials you would li9ke to own.

Sharing a Personal Story

One of Timothy’s members recently shared the following story, and we pass it on for the congregation to enjoy:
My sister-in-law’s younger brother unexpectedly passed away. He had been single all his life, but had a vast network of friends and fraternity brothers from college. She wanted to invite them to his Celebration of Life, but after rummaging through all his files, she could not find any contact information for any of them. She assumed she could get the information from his cell phone, but it was password protected. She tried and tried to open his phone, but with no success. One evening when she was sitting quietly, a soft voice whispered in her ear, “. . . Bill’s favorite number is 23.” She jumped up, ran to the cell phone, and typed in “232323,” and the phone opened! She was able to use his contact list to share the unfortunate news with all his friends. She later confided in me that she was convinced that it was an angel speaking to her in that soft whisper.
Dear Lord, help us all to be open and receptive to the “soft whispers” from You, the Holy Spirit, and your angels!”

The family of Tom Nowiszewski extends their gratitude for all the prayers said and cards sent during Tom’s hospitalization and his passing. They appreciate the love and support of their Timothy family.

Adam’s Army Blood Drive Update: “Thank you, Timothy Family, for supporting the 18th Annual Adam’s Army Blood Drive. It was a wonderful day! Forty-nine registered, and 46 units of blood were collected. This does not include donations at the Community Blood Center. These donations can help save up to 138 lives. 12 donors were 1st time givers. This will undoubtedly bless many people in our area! Diaper Drive: Lutherans for Life Diaper Drive continues through Father’s Day. This year’s donations are designated for the Happy Bottoms organization. They accept diapers, pullups/training pants, and wipes for children only. The most used sizes are 4, 5, & 6, but all child sizes are appreciated. Diaper packages can be new or partial packages that are open in a bag or box. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: God’s Favorites”

We often go through life thinking that we are God’s favorites. This is usually because of our denomination, or it could be because of our nationality, our politics, our race, or some other factor like that. But the apostle Peter once learned in a dramatic way that God doesn’t have favorites. His grace is available to everyone, which guides our attitudes towards others as well.

Restoration

God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

I picture David face down, vulnerable before the Lord, as his guilt and sorrow pour out from his broken spirit. He was left with nothing but humility, he knew the type of sacrifice God required of him. God wanted his heart.

Our world today makes it tough to appear anything but stoic, perfect, and in complete control. But we know all too well that on the other side of that screen sits a nearly broken spirit. God is far bigger than anything our minds can conceive. We were created to live fully. We must put our unbelief aside and choose to believe that God wants to restore us to a life full of His provision, blessing, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love. When we are in a place of needing restoration, we can run to the Father now and trust Him with our broken spirit and humbled heart.

The congregation is invited to stop by the “free table” in the lobby at RD Mize to pick up usable items from storage areas that will not be stored elsewhere, moved, or discarded. As additional storage areas are cleaned, sorted, and organized over the upcoming weeks, there will be more opportunities for free items.  Contact the church office with questions.

“Joining Jesus: The Where”

When we think of the Church’s mission, we often think of it as being something that has to happen “over there” (wherever that is). But God actually calls us to do missions right in our own backyard. He calls us to reach out to the people we know across the backyard fence or in the apartment next door. We are sent, not overseas, not to strangers, but to our family and friends.

When Prayer Gets Personal

I traveled to a big family event this past weekend. There was a lot of laughter, dancing, and fun, but during the weekend, my niece, Hannah, shared her faith story which included the prayer for a baby. Through much pain, struggle and surgery, she is due in August, anticipating a baby boy.

When we invite Jesus into every detail of our lives, prayer can get personal. Jesus invites us into a life of prayerful adventure — one where we walk with Him, like a child on a hike with their father, asking questions, and listening to His gentle guidance. 

Jesus made bold promises to His disciples about prayer: “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” (Matthew 21:22). Jesus lived a life of personal prayer. He would’ve talked to His Father about everything — from turning water into wine to asking God to consider preventing the suffering Jesus would endure on the cross. There was nothing off-limits between Jesus and His Father. 

There’s nothing off-limits when it comes to us and God either. Prayer isn’t meant to be boring, but personal. Tell Jesus everything. We can ask Him to give us a life of prayerful adventure. Then just watch as our prayer life starts to get personal.

Next Generation Update 

Discussions continue with interested buyers for the RD Mize campus. In addition, Timothy’s Real Estate Task Force met last Sunday to begin forming next steps to list the RD Mize Campus. Thanks to Bill Ekey, Corey Koenig, Gary Storck, and Gary Flandermeyer for serving on this team. If anyone from the congregation would like to serve on this team and/or has input regarding the listing process or plans, please contact Chair Bill Ekey (wee1115@centurylink.net) or Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com).

“Joining Jesus: The How

Whenever you have a mission, you have to know how to complete it. What are the objectives? What is it that Jesus is calling us to do? It’s not complicated. It’s just love. Show love for God by loving our neighbors. By doing that, we show them what He is all about and we proclaim the Good News of who Jesus is.

Uninvited and the Welcome of God

It happened again. I can’t say that I am completely shocked . . . but still, it did kind of surprise me. It was a situation I am all too familiar with: I wasn’t invited.
We have all experienced the pain of feeling left out. I think about the life of Jesus. He lived rejected in almost every way by many He knew and cared about. Isaiah 53:3 says, “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.”
Jesus chose to come to earth knowing that not everyone would receive and accept Him, but He counted being reconciled to us as joy. He showed unconditional love, lavish grace, and unending forgiveness to everyone He encountered.
Maybe that is why Joining Jesus excites me. It is a mission to value people, to include them, and to allow me to do the inviting. This life of Christ is the life that we are called to today. Take a minute, look around, and share a moment of love with the people around you.

Timothy Lutheran Ministries Stewardship Team

We want to introduce you to the Timothy Ministries Stewardship Team. The team has one goal: To advance the fiscal steward effectiveness of Timothy Lutheran. The efforts of the group are aimed at increasing the giving of Timothy members through education and designed-giving programs.

The team will work on initiatives around planned giving and will sponsor educational sessions on various aspects of fiscal stewardship.

Later in 2023 we will introduce the Consecrated Stewarts Program from Lutheran Church Extension Fund, which is a program of planned Biblical giving. In additional to the Consecrated Stewards program, we will plan quarterly educational programs to assist our members to become better stewards of gifts God has provided.. The specific topics are being explored now, but we will start with a session on Tax-Advantaged Giving.

Tax-Advantaged Giving: Our first session will be led by members of Timothy’s Stewardship team and will be a short no-pressure, low-key education discussion on how to increase your giving by taking advantage of tax laws around your Required Minimum Distribution and Qualified Charitable Distributions. This is intended for individuals approaching 70 years of age or for those individuals caring for family members who are at that stage of their life.

The team is putting together additional topics for our quarterly Fiscal Stewardship Sessions: Topics being considered include:
                         – The Role of Power of Attorney and Living Wills.

                         – Tax advantaged giving 2 – (Appreciated Asset Opportunities)
                         – Probate Options – (Asset Titling Strategies)

                         – Important Duties of an Estate Executor

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: The Kingdom

Jesus once told Pontius Pilate that His kingdom was not of this world. And how important that is for us to remember! The kingdom of God, the one that is sent out on Jesus’ mission, is unlike anything the world has seen: a gathering of people from all tribes, nations, languages, and peoples, from every generation, called together to be a part of what Jesus started on the Cross.

To Love Is to Listen

After the Joining Jesus event, I have been acutely aware of the people around me and my interaction with them. It’s funny, but I find myself listening more.

Galatians 6: 2 teaches us to, “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

The most practical way to live this out is through listening. We cannot save people or change their circumstances, but we can listen. I think one of the reasons people were drawn to Jesus was because He was a good listener. When blind Bartimaeus cried out, everyone tried to silence him. “Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet” Mark 10:48. The Bible tells us when Jesus hears this blind beggar’s cry, He stops. He listens.

People wanted to be close to Jesus not just because He was a good teacher, but because He made space to listen to them. It amazes me that the God of the universe came to this world as a man to walk with us, talk with us, and listen to us.

We, in our love for others, should be quick to listen like Jesus and make space for others to bring their wounds and words so that their burden feels just a little lighter. It is true that we are the hands and feet of Jesus to go and do His work, but we are also the ears of Jesus to stop, wait, and listen.

Joining Jesus on His Mission

There’s some excitement and hope brewing after the amazing Joining Jesus event last Saturday, April 29th, at Pointe of Hope Lutheran Church. 65 Timothy members packed into the room with members from Pointe of Hope, Jesus el Buen, Messiah Lutheran, and St. Paul Lutheran.  Pastor Finke had us not only laughing but also thinking about the amazing invitation and calling Jesus gives us to love and create ripples of grace all around us. Best of all, it doesn’t mean changing our whole lives around, memorizing the entire Bible, or stepping way out of our comfort zone.

While you may not see it, there is a whole new group of Timothy members stepping into the mission field God has called us to! Those who are interested will catch up later this month to brainstorm what this looks like as we move forward and support one another as God’s people specifically here at Timothy. If you missed the event but want to connect, reach out to Pastor Ryan (ryanh@timothylutheran.com) so you can join this brainstorming group.

Immersive Prayer Journey Rescheduled

The GROW Commission has rescheduled Timothy’s Immersive Prayer Journey for TOMORROW May 13, from 10am-4pm at the RD Mize Campus.

Through a path of nine self-guided stations of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, you will engage in prayer and reflection, Scripture readings, and simple activities, all intended to deepen your connection with our Savior, so make plans to come experience the prayer Jesus Himself taught us to pray.

The prayer journey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, but the pace is up to you. Couples and families with small children are welcome to take the journey together, if desired. Sign-ups are necessary for people to move smoothly through the journey. We are excited about the impact this will have on our lives.

Lutherans for Life Diaper Drive

Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle is once again organizing and supporting the Lutherans for Life Diaper Drive between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. This year’s donations are designated for the Happy Bottoms organization. They accept diapers, pullups/training pants, and wipes for children only. The most used sizes are 4, 5, & 6, but all child sizes are appreciated. Diaper packages can be new or partial packages that are open in a bag or box. The wipes should be new and unopened.  Online donations are also welcome at www.happybottoms.org  Please drop off donations in the bins at either campus. Thanks for your support!

“Free to a Good Home”

Starting this Sunday, the congregation is invited to stop by the “free table” in the lobby at RD Mize to pick up usable items from storage areas that will not be stored elsewhere, moved, or discarded. As additional storage areas are cleaned, sorted, and organized over the upcoming weeks, there will be more opportunities for free items.  Contact the church office with questions.

“Joining Jesus: The Mission”

Jesus calls all of His people to join Him on His mission. But what is that mission exactly? It’s the same one that He entrusted to His disciples: to follow Him and fish for people. As we begin this series looking at how we may join Jesus on His mission, may He open our eyes to see the opportunities all around us to go fishing.

Finding Pockets of Joy When Life Is Overwhelming


As I watch my daughter schedule, plan and run her crazy agenda trying to keep up with the sports, school and personal events of their family, I breathe a sigh of relief at my own schedule.

Caregiving takes many forms. Our seasons of life may differ, but the effect of caregiving often looks the same: full calendars, limited margin, and bags under our eyes. We can begin to feel alarmed when we can’t identify moments in our daily lives that bring us personal joy. Doesn’t the book of James say. “count it all joy”?

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sister, whenever you face trials of many kinds. James 1:2

Maybe God is calling us to reframe our Joy. (Not in some sort of spiritual bypassing way, where we need to pretend everything is okay, but in a simpler sort of way, to extend compassion to ourselves in the midst of challenging times.)

Demands are great and respite is often scarce – but even in these truths, there are still ordinary joys to be found, inviting us to breathe and remember that as we care for others, God cares for us.

Timothy thanks the Reed family for keeping their son Adam’s legacy alive by hosting this annual event. The eldest son of Jeff & Mary Reed, Adam was diagnosed with leukemia just before his 13th birthday, endured 2 ½ years in treatment with two bone marrow transplants and many rounds of chemo & radiation, and entered his eternal heavenly home in May 2005, at the age of 15.

The Timothy family was a huge support to Adam and the Reed family throughout his fight. “Adam’s Army” started as a group of church friends & family who faithfully lifted him in prayer, sent cards, visited, provided meals, organized fundraisers, and performed countless other acts of kindness & support.

After Adam went to heaven, his sister Jenna suggested that the family host a blood drive in his memory since blood and platelet transfusions were so vital during Adam’s treatment. It is a way to remember Adam while helping others in need. The first blood drive was held in 2006. May God be glorified and lives transformed through Christ as we strive to save lives through donating blood.

Next Generation Update

Smooth progress continues for the TLS Trailer #2 process! In addition to the City of Blue Springs issuing the construction permit on April 12th, Project Manager Gary Flandermeyer reports that the refurbishing of the unit began the last week of April, and the Timothy Trailer Team is tentatively scheduled to inspect the unit today, May 5th. All contractors have assured us that there are no material availability issues. The unit is scheduled to be delivered to Wyatt the week of June 5th.

Progress also continues on the sale of RD Mize. The real estate appraisal was submitted to leadership on May 1 in the amount of $3.3 million. A real estate task force, the Executive Board, and staff are moving forward with discussions among interested buyers. Please keep this process in your prayers. To God Be the Glory!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:
The Shepherd

Once again, Jesus uses an image that His contemporaries would have been familiar with: shepherds caring for their sheep. He says that He is the Shepherd. He is the Door. He is the one who opens the way for us to join His flock and He is the one who watches over and protects us.
The Blessing of Being RootedThe alarm is set to seven in the morning, but my body listens to the sun waking up over the horizon and together we start the day. I fumble around for my glasses, slow-motion my way out of bed and tiptoe into the darkness of the house. It’s quiet and still, and I breathe in the peace of the morning with a deep sigh. I’m genuinely content and, dare I even say, happy. I have a good life, but also I decided to be rooted where I am, to choose to love the place I’m in and the people I do life with inside and outside my home.

I think of Jeremiah 29:4-7: “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ‘Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.’”

Perhaps these words were difficult to comprehend for the exiles who were displaced in Babylon. “How, God?” they may have pleaded. And this is what we hear the Lord saying to them, to us: “One thing at a time – build, plant, settle in. Be rooted where you are. Live your life, and invest in the flourishing of the place you’re in, of the people you’re with.”

We can wake up and go through the motions of a very ordinary day and see that the seeds of flourishing we have sown are blooming into an abundant garden of life and joy right where we are. Stay rooted.

Youth Call-Up Nights

Middle School Call-Up Night is TOMORROW, Saturday, April 29th, from 5:30-7:30pm at  RD Mize. All 2022-23 school year 5th-8th graders are welcome to join us for this night of hiding and seeking.  There will be games, food, and a devotion to boot! Shout out to our 5th graders!!

Senior High Call-Up Bonfire Night is Wednesday, May 3rd, from 6:30-8pm at Wyatt Road.  All 2022-23 school year 8th graders are welcome to join the rest of our senior high kids as we welcome them into the group!  We will have hot dogs, s’mores, a devotion, and some hang-out time. Shout out to the 8th graders!

Timothy’s sanctuary and Prayer Room at RD Mize will be open from 8:30am-4:30pm on May 4 for quiet prayer and reflection time. In addition, the Blue Springs Ministerial Alliance has teamed with the City of Blue Springs to host an event on May 4 from noon-1pm at Blue Springs City Hall, 903 W. Main.  All churches in the Blue Springs and surrounding area are invited and encouraged to attend and pray together for our neighborhoods and nation. Prayer guide brochures will be available.

Senior High Summer Mission Trip Update

THANK YOU, TIMOTHY!  The senior high youth group has a full crew ready to head to Tulsa from June 10 – 16! The trip is now fully funded, thanks to the generosity of Timothy through fundraisers (Adopt-a- Missionary, ribs sales, Lenten Dinner) and personal donations. Now that fundraising is accomplished, they are super excited to continue the rest of the preparations. Thanks for being a part of the team as we seek to transform lives through Christ.  Please keep this trip in your prayers!

Immersive Prayer Journey Rescheduled

The GROW Commission has rescheduled Timothy’s Immersive Prayer Journey for Saturday, May 13, from 10am-4pm at the RD Mize Campus.

Through a path of nine self-guided stations of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, you will engage in prayer and reflection, Scripture readings, and simple activities, all intended to deepen your connection with our Savior, so make plans to come experience the prayer Jesus Himself taught us to pray.

The prayer journey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, but the pace is up to you. Couples and families with small children are welcome to take the journey together, if desired. Sign-ups are necessary for people to move smoothly through the journey. We are excited about the impact this will have on our lives.

Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary

All Timothy women are invited to the next LUMAA meeting on May 17th to enjoy fellowship and an opportunity to help with hands-on projects. It will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Home in Belton, MO. Registration begins at 9am; opening service is at 9:30am. Volunteers Needed Can you offer some time on Sat., May 6th, to be a Timothy Ambassador for the annual Live Well Community Fair at RD Mize. Tasks include sharing the love of Jesus by greeting the public, escorting vendors/organizations to their table in the Family Life Center, directing visitors to various areas inside the building (lower floor only) and outside the building (food trucks & emergency vehicles), answering questions, helping with set-up or clean-up, etc. The event is from 10am-2pm. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend:
Walking with Jesus

One of the most amazing stories to come out of Easter is the story of two disciples walking with Jesus, without realizing it, on the road to Emmaus. While we may be tempted to wonder what Jesus had to say about the Old Testament, it’s more important to realize that we are often in the same position as those two disciples. We travel a road and are often not aware that Jesus journeys with us. May He open our eyes to see His presence with us every day!

What We Think About Matters

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

It’s easy to get bogged down by the pressures or sorrows of daily life. To think about what is discouraging and disappointing fixating on what is painful, frustrating or half true.

God knows that in a broken world it’s easy to think about the brokenness; in a sinful world it’s easy call out the sin, or give into it. But sin and brokenness are not the end of the story! This is why Scripture is clear that what we think about matters.

God has our best interest at heart. So He invites us to dwell on what is pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. He invites us to rest in His peace. Enjoy peace today.

Academic Scholarships

Timothy families with students in grades 1-11 are encouraged to check out Truman Heartland Community Foundation’s webpage to determine if your children qualify for one of the academic scholarships below. All applications are submitted through the online portal at Truman Heartland Community Foundation. Deadline to apply is June 1, 2023 (no exceptions).

  • Theodore V Schubkegel Scholarship: Established in honer of Pastor Ted Schubkegel who served Timothy from 1998 until his death in 2014.Applicants must be Timothy members in grades 2-8.
  • Rosemary Thompson Scholarship: Established in honor of RoseMary  Thompson. Applicants must be in grades 2-8.
  • Betty Wilson Scholarship: A living memorial to Betty Wilson. Applicants must be students in grades 9-12 planning to or attending a Lutheran High School.
  • William Gerike Scholarship: Established in honor of Pastor Gerike who served Timothy from its beginning in 1962 until his death on January 1, 1981. Applicants must be college students preparing for full-time Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod church work as Pastor, Teacher, Director of Childhood Education or School Administrator. The priority is Timothy members, then Shepherd of the Valley-Oak Grove, then sister MO Synod congregations, then other Lutheran congregations.

Men’s Bible Study

The book of 1 Peter | Life by God’s Word

Wouldn’t it be great to be free of trouble? That’s what we sometimes think. But 1 Peter shows us that difficulties and hardships don’t have to wear us down. In fact, this letter teaches us that God can use difficulties to strengthen us. Knowing this can bring hope and reassurance that eternal life is God’s ultimate purpose. Read 1 Peter to discover how faith, refined by suffering, can help us see the Lord more clearly. This is valuable advice for holding firm in difficult times.
Peter, the apostle, saw that increasing hardship and persecution had caused some Christians to wonder if God had abandoned them. He wrote to encourage these believers, offering them hope and meaning in the midst of their suffering. Come and experience life by God’s Word.

Through a path of nine self-guided stations of the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, you will engage in prayer and reflection, Scripture readings, and simple activities, all intended to deepen your connection with our Savior, so make plans to come experience the prayer Jesus Himself taught us to pray.

The prayer journey will take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete, but the pace is up to you. Couples and families with small children are welcome to take the journey together, if desired. Sign-ups are necessary for people to move smoothly through the journey. We are excited about the impact this will have on our lives.

Lenten Dinners Support Timothy Ministries

Resuming the Lenten Dinners on Wednesday evenings was successful this year! Thanks to various ministries for preparing the meals and to the congregation for supporting them with free-will offerings as they enjoyed the food and fellowship. Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary

All Timothy women are invited to the next LUMAA meeting on May 17th to enjoy fellowship and an opportunity to help with hands-on projects. It will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Home in Belton, MO. Registration begins at 9am; opening service is at 9:30am. Next Generation Update

On Friday, April 12th, Gary Flandermeyer picked up the approved construction permit from the City of Blue Springs for the second trailer at Wyatt. The unit will be delivered the first week of June.

In the middle of the stories about Easter and Doubting Thomas, we have this odd little detail of Jesus breathing on His disciples and sending them out to forgive people their sins. But this is a powerful moment! It means that God’s people are given the opportunity to show and share God’s own forgiveness with others so that they, too, many know Easter joy!

Wouldn’t it be great to be free of trouble? That’s what we sometimes think. But 1 Peter shows us that difficulties and hardships don’t have to wear us down. In fact, this letter teaches us that God can use difficulties to strengthen us. Knowing this can bring hope and reassurance that eternal life is God’s ultimate purpose. Read 1 Peter to discover how faith, refined by suffering, can help us see the Lord more clearly. This is valuable advice for holding firm in difficult times.
Peter, the apostle, saw that increasing hardship and persecution had caused some Christians to wonder if God had abandoned them. He wrote to encourage these believers, offering them hope and meaning in the midst of their suffering. Come and experience life by God’s Word.

Youth Fun
Youth ministry had a great couple of weeks leading up to Holy Week. Approximately 100 total people attended Rink Ratz skate party on March 26th. An amazing Easter event on April 1st also saw over 100 kids attend. They had an opportunity to learn about the important days of Holy Week with fun activities, such as a servant event, and then, of course, a rowdy Easter Egg hunt. Thanks to all who helped, attended, and supported our youth!
 
Immersive Prayer Journey Rescheduled

The GROW Commission has rescheduled Timothy’s Immersive Prayer Journey for Saturday, May 13, from 9am-4pm at the RD Mize Campus.

Let’s Rally Around Jesus

What is Jesus already up to in the lives of people around you?  What is He up to in your own life?  What good can you do in the lives and community around you?

I don’t know if you know this, but the Kingdom of God is at hand!  Which means God has already begun His restoring and redeeming process in the world we live.  How do I know that?  Jesus Himself told us when He walked on this earth (Mark 1:15). God’s incredible kingdom and work is happening right now all around us, and God is not calling us to be salesmen to sell the gospel.  Instead, He’s calling us to simply join Him with what He is already doing!

You’ve been hearing it over the past few weeks. Our focus here at Timothy is going to be walking together, learning how to JOIN JESUS ON HIS MISSION every day. We have begun this journey by diving into Pastor Greg Finke’s book Joining Jesus on His Mission. If you haven’t had a chance but would like to, we’d love for you to read this with us. You can contact Pastor Ryan for a copy or go to Amazon.  But, beyond that, we are inviting you, members of Timothy, to join us on April 29th from 9-noon at Pointe of Hope Lutheran Church in Blue Springs (PLEASE REGISTER BY APRIL 14th).  Pastor Greg Finke will be with us to encourage us and remind us that living and sharing our faith doesn’t require going to foreign countries, nor does it mean awkwardly going door to door asking people if they know Jesus.  We would love for you to join your church family for this one-day, morning event as we seek being brighter lights for Christ wherever we are.  Here are a few questions that have been asked with answers:

Why is it at Pointe of Hope Lutheran Church?  Timothy has teamed up with other Lutheran Churches, including Pointe of Hope, St. Paul’s, Messiah, Our Redeemer, and others so that this event could make a greater impact in the Kansas City area.  Collectively, the pastors decided Pointe of Hope would host at their site.

Is there nursery/childcare available? There will be staffed nursery available at Pointe of Hope for kiddos 0-3yrs old. If you need care for older children older than 3, please let us know and we can make arrangements.

Who is the event for? It is available to all Timothy Lutheran Church members and guests who would like to attend.  (St. Paul’s, Pointe of Hope, Messiah, Our Redeemer, etc. members will also be invited)

What will we do at the event? We will have time to hear from Pastor Greg throughout the morning as he helps us refocus our attention on what God is already doing all around us and how we can naturally and organically be a part of that work by simply getting to know our neighbors/coworkers and caring about them with the heart of Christ.  There may be some discussions at our tables as well.

Is it just 9am-noon? Yes, the event itself with Pastor Greg will be from 9am-noon.  There are some OPTIONAL additional events if you choose to arrive early.  Breakfast snacks starting at 8am and a brief worship service at 8:30am will be available.  Again, these two portions are optional.

Baby STEPs Ministry
Supporting Timothy’s Expectant Parents

Is your family growing? Or do you know someone whose family is growing? Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle organizes the Baby STEPs ministry which supports and celebrates the new life with which God blesses our Timothy families.
Volunteers offer personal contact through phone calls, cards, and prayers. The homecoming of a new infant is also celebrated with a home visit and meals provided by “meals for Moms” volunteers. Each Timothy baby receives a new pair of white booties, handmade by a volunteer, as a keepsake from the church, symbolizing being washed clean and made God’s child at baptism.

2023 Live Well Community Fair

Plan now to attend the 5th annual Live Well Community Fair at RD Mize Campus, on Saturday, May 6th, 10am-2pm,. This free event with more than 30 community organizations provides resources to enhance physical, spiritual, and mental wellness. Next Generation Update

Timothy learned this week that delivery of entire HVAC units, not just parts, are significantly delayed from all suppliers.  We continue to pray for as speedy delivery as possible as well as continued operation of our existing units. Three organizations “walked through” the RD Mize Campus this week. Roland Hoffman of Hoffman Appraisals started the appraisal process on Wednesday and expects to be completed within a couple weeks. Staff and leadership continue conversations about moving forward. If you are interested in volunteering on the Site-and-Space Task Force or the Site-to-Site Task Force, please call the church office.
