“Reformation Sunday”

CREATIVE TENSION: Each and every year we set aside this day to remember the Reformation.  A  time and place in history where the church got called out on some of their errant ways and then invited to get “re-rooted” back in the Gospel.  While this firestorm is often connected with the words of Luther which were nailed to the castle church in Wittenberg, the real crisis and centrality of the conversation revolved around the Word of God.  As we gather today, there are many different voices and words swirling around.  The question is, “Are we grounded in the most important Words of  all, God’s?”

Time Driving Behind a Combine 

Fall means harvest time. And harvest time means huge, slow, farming equipment on the move. More than once, cars flew around me and the farming equipment in no-passing zones, just barely missing oncoming traffic.
Why are we all in such a hurry? Where is our patience? I am guilty of this as well. I don’t like the anxiousness it brings. I don’t like the feeling that a fast forward button was pushed on my life or that I am missing out on what’s most important. The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. Proverbs 21:5
Although I think I’ll accomplish more, help more people, basically be a super woman when I hurry, I can’t do any of those things. Hurry robs us of what God has given to us in this beautiful life, the one He intends for us to use well. Hurry has no place here, when living our best life. With God’s grace, we can slow down and connect with Him and others.

Timothy Harvest Party Fun

Timothy Lutheran Church & School together hosted a Harvest Party last Friday at Wyatt from 5:30-7:30pm with approximately 105 kids plus parents, joining in to play carnival games, cash in on some candy, slap bracelets, bouncy balls, and more! Snacking on some pizza was mixed with lots of chatting and laughter. Praise God for a successful gathering of Timothy’s next generation and their friends!

CrossWalk Update:  God Talk at Home

Younger kids (Pre-K – 1^st Grade) learned about Daniel and the Lion’s Den.
Take Home Point: God is powerful. God tames our fears.
Read the Event: Daniel and the Lion’s Den from an early reader Bible, or read & summarize the event from Daniel 6:1-28.
Prayer Power: Write “Jesus” on a large paper sack. Help your child wad up newspaper to make several newspaper balls. Throw the balls in the bag one at a time while naming fears. Explain that you are giving your fears to Jesus. Say a prayer, asking Jesus to use His power to take away your fears.

Older kids (2^nd-5^th grades) learned about Josiah and the Forgotten Book.
Take Home Point: Never forget that God speaks to you through His Word.
Read the Event: 2 Chron. 34-35
Prayer Power: Thank God that He cares enough about us to speak to us in His Word. Thank him that His Word gives us wisdom to lead godly lives in obedience to Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to help us know Jesus more and more by reading the Bible.

Donor Match Program Reminder

We’re only a few days away from taking advantage of an exciting opportunity! Timothy’s church management system offers a Donor Match Program to encourage new recurring donors.

Every first gift between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, 2021, from a new recurring donor will be matched up to a total maximum of $1,000. To be eligible for the matching gift, more than one installment must be set up. Timothy will receive the matching gift in the first quarter of 2022.

Surviving the Holidays

GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays will be presented on Thurs., Nov. 4, from 6:30-8pm in the RD Mize Fireplace Room (302). This workshop features practical suggestions and reassurance through video interviews with counselors, grief experts and other people who have experienced the holidays after their loved one’s death. Topics include Why the Holidays Are Tough, What to Expect, How to Prepare, How to Manage Relationships & Holiday Socials, and Using the Holidays to Help You Heal.

DivorceCare: Surviving the Holidays will be presented on Mon., Nov. 15, from 6:30-8pm in Timothy’s at RD Mize. This workshop features practical suggestions, guidance and reassurance through video interviews with counselors, experts in divorce-related care and people who have experienced the holidays after separation or divorce. Topics will Why the Holidays Are Tough, What Emotions to Expect, How to Plan and Prepare, How to Handle Uncomfortable Situations and Using the Holidays to Help You Heal.

News from Missionary Carol Halter

Timothy received an emailed letter from Carol Halter earlier this week, excerpts from which are below;
“I have received the good news from the LCMS office of International Mission that you continue regularly to donate to help support me as a missionary here in Hong Kong. I do so appreciate this as it helps make it possible for me to tell Chinese people about the one true God Who loves us all so much. Especially during COVID with all its problems, I am ever so grateful for your remembering me with your generous support.”

And Another Appreciative Outreach Ministry. . .

Timothy received a letter of appreciation this week from The Apple of His Eye Mission Society for contributing year-to-date mission giving in the amount of $930.86. Excerpts from the letter include, “May the Lord bless you abundantly as you have bless us through your prayers and sustaining mission support! We praise the Lord for another baptism of a new believer in Israel and three more on the way by Thanksgiving. The Lord is calling people to Himself, and we celebrate that our mission can join in the harvest.”

2021 First Fruits totals $163,081.92, as of October 24^th. Thank you!

Youth Ministry Fundraiser Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, both campuses; Price Chopper coupons available for $5 each (or whatever donation you wish to offer) which can be applied to the expressed purchase of sheet cakes, deli party trays, bakery pies, rotisserie or fried chicken, and $5 off total purchase of $50 or more. This Sunday we observe LUTHERAN WOMEN’S MISSIONARY LEAGUE. Approximately 90 Timothy ladies belong to one of three Circles (Elizabeth, Mary Martha, or Ruth), joining together for devotion, fellowship, and bring their mites for missions.

A video during Sunday worship will highlight some of the activities and events held throughout the year. Be sure to stop by the table in the lobby to meet some of the members and get more information. All ladies in Timothy are welcome to visit and/or join. All-Church Potluck

Thanks to Timothy’s GATHER Commission for organizing and implementing Timothy’s first potluck dinner since the onset of COVID about 18 months ago! Although smaller in attendance than normal, it was a start to “returning-to normal” fellowship opportunities. Always good food and good friends to enjoy! “Thinking-of-You” cards were signed for Timothy’s shut-in members. Thanks to members of the Wyatt Celebration Chorus for leading a sing-a-long session of familiar songs. Successful TLS Walk-a-Thon

What a blessing! On Friday, Sept. 24, all students, pre-school through 8th grade, participated in the 2021
TLS Walk-a-Thon, raising funds to support the first quarter TLS Mission Project. Here are some fun facts:
•    2,305 laps around the parking lot were completed
•    Teachers, parents & family  members assisted students with motivation by walking with them
•    A total of $6,162 was raised to purchase classroom equipment
•    Thank you, Kim Brunkhorst and Becky Barnett, for organizing and leading the event!
•    Thank you to all who contributed and sponsored our students. Our success is your success!

The TLS mission comes from Matt. 20: 28, Sent to Serve. In a world that values self-promotion and

Cancer Prayer Service “Faith Over Fear”

In the eye of a storm, our faith can be challenged as fear sets in. Every day, believers and unbelievers face the impact cancer has on the life of the afflicted and in the lives of family and friends. It is without a doubt one of the toughest roads we can travel, and we don’t have to travel it alone. The word cancer brings with it heartbreaking news that creates anger, depression, loneliness, and the list goes on. Cancer threatens the gift of life God provides. Life is still a gift, so we journey forward together as God’s family.

The first Cancer Prayer Service was held in 2019 to help support and encourage cancer patients, along with their family and friends. We gathered as brothers and sisters in Christ in worship, song, and prayer as we praised God in the midst of our storms. Timothy Lutheran Ministries will host its fifth Cancer Prayer Service to support, encourage, and pray for those impacted by cancer.

Together, we praise God in the storm of life through community in God’s family—no one is ever alone in God’s family. We look forward to Norman and Anna Bannister share how faith brought them through Norman’s battle with cancer.

Please join us by inviting those you know to gather with us as we pray for one another. The event and Cancer Prayer Pack are available to anyone by request.

Prayer Power:  Thank God that He sent Jesus to die for our sins and a perfect example for us to follow.
Pray that even when we mess up, we can remember to repent and ask for forgiveness. Thank God for
Jesus living in our hearts and giving us the power to finish strong.

Youth Ministry Fundraiser

Timothy’s youth thanks the congregation for participating in its various fundraisers to attend the 2022 National Youth Gathering in Houston, TX, next July. The recent Shoe Drive netted 57 bags of 25 pairs each which will add approximately $450 to the NYG fundraising effort! Thank you!

On October 31 and November 7 at both campuses, youth will be selling Price Chopper coupons for $5 each (or whatever donation you care to offer) which can be applied to the expressed purchase of sheet cakes, deli party trays, bakery pies, rotisserie or fried chicken, and $5 off total purchase of $50 or more. What a deal! Five different opportunities to save a total of $18 if all individual discounts are used! Even though these coupons expire on Dec. 31, 2021, they are timely for the holiday seasons approaching quickly!

If unable to purchase your coupons on Oct. 31 or Nov. 7, you can contact any of the youth, Pastor Ryan, or the church office. Thanks for your support! It is a tremendous blessing for the youth to have Timothy’s spiritual and financial support for this life-changing week!

Homeless Kits Update

Donations for the homeless-kit project at Timothy’s Ministry Fair on Nov. 7 (RD Mize) and Nov. 14 (Wyatt) are going well! The bins/boxes for drop-off of items are in lobby of both campuses. Items will be collected through Oct. 31. Thank you!

For now, the most-needed items are small bottles mouthwash, small tubes tooth paste, small bottles hand lotion, wash cloths, small bottles hand sanitizer, small cans deodorant, small hair brushes/combs, disposable razors, small cans shaving cream, and granola bars.  A sufficient amount of Ziploc bags, tooth brushes, and dental floss has been collected. Please watch for updates each week! Thank you!

We look forward to the congregation learning about Timothy’s ministries as well as assembling simple homeless kits when they visit the tables in the lobbies. Be sure to take advantage of this dual purpose opportunity!

We gathered as brothers and sisters in Christ in worship, song, and prayer as we praised God in the midst of our storms. Timothy Lutheran Ministries will host its fifth Cancer Prayer Service to support, encourage, and pray for those impacted by cancer.

Together, we praise God in the storm of life through community in God’s family—no one is ever alone in God’s family. We look forward to Norman and Anna Bannister share how faith brought them through Norman’s battle with cancer.

Please join us by inviting those you know to gather with us as we pray for one another. The event and Cancer Prayer Pack are available to anyone by request.

Younger kids (Pre-K –1^st grade) learned about God winning the battle for King Jehoshaphat
Read the event:  God wins a battle for King Jehoshaphat from an early reading Bible, or read and summarize the event from 2 Chronicles 20:1-29.
Take-home point to remember:  God is our king. God will help us win.
Prayer Power:  Pray to God and tell him your problems. Ask God to help you with your problems.

Ministry Fair

Timothy’s Executive Board is planning a Ministry Fair in the lobby of both campuses, Nov. 7 at RD Mize and Nov. 14, at Wyatt.  In addition to learning about opportunities associated with Timothy’s various ministries, worshippers will pick up one item at each table for a homeless kit and take the kit to keep in their car for someone in the community.

The goals are not only internal outreach to learn more ways to serve at Timothy, but also external outreach to offer a helping hand. Timothy’s Care Minister Nancy Nowiszewski shares the following story about this type of community outreach:

“I carry one of the bags in my car to give to a homeless person, whom I usually see at corners in the city or near the interstate in BS. I had to take a second look a few weeks ago when I spotted a thin man and his dog walking through the Target parking lot. I knew I needed to give him the kit I had with me, so I quickly got into my car and headed in the direction he had gone. I couldn’t see him anywhere so I said a quick prayer that I would see the man, if I was meant to help him. As I looked down the street, I saw him in the distance, backpack on his back, walking with his dog. I pulled up alongside him and rolled down my window to tell him I had a little help for him. He walked over, and with a toothy grin, thanked me for the bag with some essentials and papers. I pointed out that the papers included information on how to get help finding a job and a little cash would buy him a sandwich. As I turned the car around to go home, I saw that he had found a tree to sit under to escape the hot sun and was going through the homeless kit to discover the contents. I pray he read the Christian tract and saw the invitation to visit Timothy. He continues in my prayers.”

Collegiate Care

Fall is in the air, and while we may be savoring a pumpkin spice latte, our college students are in the midst of another crazy semester and perhaps even facing midterms! So Timothy’s GROW Commission and Pastor Ryan plan to ship out cards and a small gift to our college students, reminding them that their Timothy family is thinking and praying for them.

 Lutheran High School Paperback Book Drive

During the month of October, a LHS alum, Alex Helmer, is sponsoring a book drive for Operation Paperback. In remembrance of 9/11, Alex’s goal is to send 911 paperbacks to deployed soldiers, veterans, and military families by Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11.

Any gently used paperbacks may be donated, but the most requested are action, suspense, true crime, and history (please no romance, political, or religious). You can drop off your donations in the Operation Paperback bins at either campus prior to Nov. 1. The books will be sorted, labeled, packed and mailed by Veterans’ Day.  Thanks!

Food Donations Update

As previously published, collection of non-perishable food in October and November will be delivered to Jesu el Buen in KC. While all foods are always needed and appreciated, their current specific needs are sugar, oatmeal, cereal, and laundry soap. Please note that the brown grocery sacks with food lists for holiday meals will be available on Sun., Oct. 31.

The LWML MO District 2021 KC South Zone Fall Rally is Tuesday, Oct. 26, with the theme “Sharing Love, Sharing Life,” based on 1 Thess. 2: 7-8, at St. Matthew Lutheran, 700 NE Chipman Rd., LSMO.

Program: Julie Ball from The Light House will speak about their community outreach services, including an adoption program and maternity home for young pregnant ladies.

2021 Fall Fun Fest

Timothy will once again reach into the community this weekend with the annual Steak Burger booth at 11^th & Main in Downtown BS. Thanks for supporting this outreach opportunity by volunteering and/or purchasing the delicious burgers and spreading the love of Jesus with everyone you see.

A special treat will be cheering for the TLS float in the parade Saturday morning! The float will be #53 and will be eager to wave as it passes by the steak burger booth. Go Rams!

Children’s Ministry Update

Children’s ministry is looking forward to a year of fun and excitement, learning about our faith and the love of Jesus through His Word.

Last week, children in Pre-K through 1^st grade learned about David dancing with joy before the Lord in 2 Samuel 6:11-15. Family devotions may focus on the story by asking your children these questions: 1) What does God give you that makes you happy? 2) What good things has God done for you? 3) How can we praise God? Prayer Power: Pray to God and tell him why you think he is wonderful. Ideas from older siblings or parents may include reminders that He is loving, He is the Creator, or He always forgives.

Children in grades 2-5 learned about Esther. Key Verse: Ps. 18:17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, because they were too strong for me. Suggested Family Time Options: God used Esther to help rescue His people. God can use us to help rescue people when we share the love of Jesus with them. Think of ways the family can share the love of Jesus with others in the community. This is God using you to rescue them.

10,000 Reasons

We are called to worship.

It’s like that song “10,000 Reasons” says: “Bless the Lord, O my soul…Worship His Holy Name. Sing like never before. . . I’ll worship Your Holy Name.”

We are called to worship the Great and Glorious God who brings the sun up each day and provides an escape plan from sin and death to eternal life.

Music enhances our worship, and you are invited to join us in choir. Currently, the contemporary choir practices on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 at the Wyatt Campus; the sanctuary choir will practice on Wednesday evenings, starting Wed., Sept. 22, from 7-8pm in the sanctuary.

“Breakfast Debrief”

Fifteen of Timothy’s middle school and senior high youth, including a non-member from TLS, connected last Saturday, Sept. 11, for a “Breakfast Debrief.” They enjoyed a “splendiferous” breakfast buffet of biscuits & gravy, pancakes, sweet bread, bacon, sausage, egg casserole, fruit salad, along with milk, juice, & coffee! All prepared by amazing youth leaders Becky & Erick Blatt, Carrie Hochgrebe, Ryan Kuecker & Melissa Westermann.

The “debrief” included laughs about personal, random factoids about the start of this school year and how the school year has started in general. The morning concluded in 1 Kings 19:2-8 with a reminder that God cares for us in our highs and lows. Thanks for supporting our NEXT GENERATION!

Hillcrest Gala Update

Timothy learned this week that the 21^st Annual Gala & Auction on August 19^th raised $250,000 in support of its housing programs for homeless families in our community. Praise God!

Timothy’s recent graduate, Jennifer, entered Hillcrest’s program in need of direction to get her finances and life back on track to provide a stable home for her children. Her goal was to leave behind her old life of addiction, become the mom she knew she could be, and provide a place of stability for her children by owning her own home. With Jennifer’s determination, a lot of hard work and the help and support of her case manager, Jennifer succeeded. She obtained each of her goals. In Jennifer’s words: “I want to thank everyone at Hillcrest. I was able to achieve my goals that I worked hard for; and, with the support of the program, I have a home now that is my own—and I am not going to be homeless again.”

Hillcrest thanks Timothy for its support in making a real difference for Jennifer and her children, and the hundreds of other families, individuals, youth and children they are privileged to serve. Thank you, Timothy!

Pastor Howard Hilsabeck, who served as associate pastor at Timothy from 1978-1982, will celebrate his 90^th birthday in October. As We Gather For Worship This Weekend

Supporting Timothy’s Expectant Parents

Baby Steps is a ministry that supports and celebrates the new life with which God blesses our Timothy families. This support may come through a variety of personal contact opportunities, such as phone calls, cards, prayers, and a home-cooked meal upon arriving home from the hospital. In addition, each Timothy baby receives a new pair of booties, handmade by a volunteer, as a gift from the church. The booties are white to remind them of being washed clean at their baptism of becoming a Child of God.

Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle coordinates the Baby STEPS ministry. Support throughout the pregnancy is available and encouraged as families prepare for a new loved one. If you would like to be a Baby STEPS recipient or volunteer, please contact Kaye Gray (816.585.6530 or kgray1024@outlook.com).

Wednesday Education Activities in Full Swing

CrossWalk, Confirmation, and Senior High Youth kicked off a new year in grand style Wednesday evening from 6:30-8pm at RD Mize. King Rodnae, Pastor Ryan, teachers, and group leaders welcomed students to a new year.

Kids in Crosswalk savored ice cream sundaes and then broke out their markers to illuminate the beautiful name of Jesus. They were reminded that they are all connected and growing in JESUS. Be on the lookout for their artwork around RD Mize.

Confirmation revved up again with a packed house of 26 students for the first week, and it’s not too late to start next week. Timothy’s Confirmation is intended to involve heart, mind, spirit, and family. There was time to react to Pastor John’s lesson, ask questions, learn lifelong spiritual tools, and talk in small groups about the highs and lows of “life.” Please pray for the Holy Spirit to continue stirring in our young people.

Senior High students was rocking with 10 kids creating craziness and creativity as they began building an altar of stone in the youth room. Each stone represents one of our youth and also reminds them of WHOM they worship, and where they stand (on the Lord’s side!)

Confirmation Prayer Pals

Interested in supporting a Confirmation student (6^th-8^th grader)? This ministry is resuming after taking a break in 2020 due to COVID.

As a prayer pal, high school youth and adults are encouraged to pray for and support a Confirmation student throughout the school year by praying for your assigned student, leaving notes of encouragement (approx. once a month), and attending your Confirmand’s faith story in worship (8^th graders). You do not need to already know your student.
If interested, pick up a flyer at either Information Center or contact Mary Low (k2lmlow@sbcglobal.net) or church office for more details. Timothy’s Prayer Pal ministry is a great way to share your faith and to help Confirmation students on their faith journey.

Staffed Nursery Resumes

The nursery at both campuses will again be staffed on Wednesday evenings at RD Mize (6:15-8:15pm) and Sunday mornings at Wyatt (9:45-11:15am) for children under 3 years old. The RD Mize nursery will be open on Sunday mornings for families but not staffed until warranted. Please contact the church office if child care is requested for other activities during the week.

Next Generation Update

Timothy’s leadership continues to prayerfully discern God’s will in moving forward with the Next Generation process. The Construction Task Force and other leaders have met recently with Mantel Teter Architects to view and discuss potential floor plans for expansion at Wyatt. Timothy’s leadership is genuinely excited about the potential for improving and expanding all ministries at Timothy, fulling believing God is faithful as we look forward to seeing how He blesses our ministry expansion efforts.

Financial Update

Timothy’s leadership also continues to balance excitement about moving forward with ministry expansion with funding support for it. While weekly worship attendance is slowly trending upward again, giving is steadily decreasing. Based upon the July financial report, there will be a projected shortfall of $300,000.00 by Dec. 31. Please be a part of the solution for a balanced budget by year end.
