Fruit of the Spirit: FAITHFULNESS

When someone is said to be faithful, we think of them as being truthful. Trustworthy. We know we can believe what they say and count on them to be at our side when we need them. Sadly, we often struggle with this concept, watching out for number one and living only for ourselves. But God gives us an example of what true faithfulness looks like in Himself, for great is His faithfulness to us.

Bible Study Overwhelm:  A Devotion

I’ve really only grown in my knowledge and love for the Word over the past few years, despite spending my entire life in the church. The big reason is because it always seemed so overwhelming to study.
The truth is that studying the Bible can feel daunting. There are many methods of study, but it’s important to recognize why we study the Bible to help motivate us. Studying Scripture reveals who God is, why we need Christ, and teaches us how to live like Christ.

As Christians, we are called to live like Jesus, to pursue a Christ-like life because it’s our actions that point others to Him. What better way to learn how to act like Christ than to study the book that was God-breathed! 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 says, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Just like close friendships require communication and attention, so does our relationship with the Lord. And it starts with spending time in His Word. I won’t lie to you: it isn’t always easy. Whether we’re busy or we’re struggling to understand the passage we are reading, it can be hard sometimes. But it’s so worth it!

Retirement Celebration

The congregation is invited to celebrate with Care Minister Nancy Nowiszewski at a retirement potluck luncheon on Sunday, August 21, at noon in the Family Life Center at RD Mize.  The church will provide meat, table service, and drinks. RSVP is necessary for planning purposes. Please RSVP on the church app under Events or on church website (timothylutheran.com) under Events by August 15th. Thank you!

Fruit of the Spirit: GOODNESS

“Goodness” is a hard-to-define concept (unlike the rest of the fruit of the Spirit). Goodness seems to be a catch-all term that describes how the Christian lives his or her life overall. Do we display the goodness of God in our lives? Or do we instead show that sin is in control of our words, actions, and attitudes? Thanks be to God that He cleans us up and gives us His own goodness as a free gift through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Expectations:  A Devotion

I pull up to the drive-thru and place my order. I anticipate that when I reach the window, a server will greet me, lean from the window towards my car, and deliver my food to me. We order from the menu, then expect to receive what we asked for. We ask, then we anticipate.

I recently came to understand that I have far less confidence in God’s desire or ability to give me what I ask for. As with the drive-thru, I ask, yet my follow-up indicates that I’m not certain God will provide what has been promised. God has consistently been faithful in my life, opening doors, sending people to help, and guiding me forward. As I reflected on God’s faithfulness, I see how my lack of faith caused me to needlessly labor and suffer. Many times, instead of asking and then anticipating God to deliver, I attempted to forge my way forward. This is like asking at the drive-thru, then getting out of my car, going inside to the kitchen, leaving the kitchen to run next door to the grocery store to pick up extra ingredients, returning to the restaurant, cooking my own food, and then serving it to myself. You see, I am great at ordering from God’s menu but need to get significantly better at expecting God to give me precisely what I asked for.

Jesus taught His disciples that when they are aligned with God’s will, they can ask and confidently anticipate that God will give them what they requested. He said in John 15: 7, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”

When we abide in Jesus and align ourselves with God’s will, then our requests will align with God’s vision for our lives. Abide. Ask. Anticipate. It’s just that simple—as simple as the drive-thru.

Timothy’s Caring Support Continues

What a blessing Nancy Nowiszewski’s service as Care Minister has been to Timothy and the community for the past 17 years! Thank you, Nancy, for leading so many ministries and programs that provide love and support to people who struggle with life’s challenges. As she fully retires in August, we praise God for her servant heart and look forward to celebrating her continued service as a “volunteer.” Mark your calendars to attend a retirement potluck luncheon in her honor on August 21st at noon in the Family Life Center. More details soon!

Timothy’s Executive Board is pleased to share that current Member Services Sandy Gregory will serve Timothy as part-time Care Coordinator and part-time Member Services. As this new position develops, the board appreciates the congregation’s support where needed.

Bump City Fun

It’s a rare sight to see tired kids, but we saw it, with our own eyes, on Saturday night, June 4th. Approximately 60-75 Timothy youth met at Bump City to climb, slide, jump, and swing. We mixed it up a little with a few games, such as “The Floor Is Hot Lava,” tag, and even a limbo champ was crowned! Parents had a great evening of chillaxing and chatting while kiddos did their thing. And, yet, many kiddos went home tired. Thanks, Timothy, for supporting our children & youth ministry!

Adam’s Army Results

Thanks to all who donated at the June 5 Adam’s Army Blood Drive. Of the 41 volunteers who came to donate, 36 usable units were collected. If you donate blood throughout the year with the Community Blood Center, please let them know to credit our Timothy account. Just give the code CB3C. A special thank-you to Mary & Jeff Reed for leading this annual blood drive—now totaling 17!!

Live Well Community Fair

Last Saturday, the Live Well Community Fair offered a variety of information and services on living a healthy life as well as fund and food to the 150+ visitors who attended. Special appearances by the 501st Legion (Storm Troopers) plus Jessy & Thomas, the Comfort Dogs, were favorites for photo opportunities. Kids big and small enjoyed the 52’ challenge jump house. Special thanks to many Timothy volunteers who assisted with all of the details for this event!

Ongoing Food Donations

Thank you, Timothy, for your ongoing commitment to support the food donations ministry for BS Community Services League, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Jesu el Buen. It cannot be overstated how much these organizations appreciate our support! Recently, Gary Flandermeyer delivered a full truck-load of donations to Kansas City for the Jesu el Buen ministry.  Thank you, Gary!

Gary asks that Timothy also keeps Frank Eberhart, the pastor of Jesu el Buen, in our prayers, as his cancer has progressed.

Donations during the month of June will be delivered to BS Community Services League. Look for the donation bins in the lobby at each campus! Thank you!

Friends Café

All women and their friends are invited to the Women of Hope Friends Café on Sat., June 18, 9:30-11am in the Community Room at Colonial Gardens, 27610 E. Wyatt Rd., just east of our Wyatt Campus. Fruit of the Spirit: PATIENCE

We live in a world that seems designed to rob us of our patience. We have become used to instant gratification, give-it-to-me-NOW sorts of attitudes. And we can get that way when we are waiting for God to act. We may ironically demand patience from God right now and not want to wait. But God teaches us patience by showing patience with us. Our patience can flow out of the gracious patience that He has with us.

In Transition:  A Devotion

My daughter recently sold their home. They are in transition with the change in homes, their son moving to a new school and life in general. I’m kind of weird in that I actually like change when God is leading. I think it’s exciting! Even when it’s God’s idea and I’m excited about what He’s doing, transitions are not easy.

Think about good but hard transitions in God’s word. There are many, but one is when Jesus’ followers were waiting for the arrival of the Holy Spirit.

And I [Jesus] will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14: 16-17

God had worked a miracle—the biggest of them all: Jesus took the sins of the world away and conquered death. His followers had seen all the events and watched in astonishment as God lifted Jesus back to heaven, and now His followers had to wait on what Jesus had promised. They were in transition. So they waited and prayed.

It takes time for each of us to catch up with God’s plans, so we need to give ourselves space and time. The waiting in our lives is necessary so we can rely on God’s power and not our own. Know that we each have the power of the Holy Spirit in us no matter the circumstances.

Congrats, 2022 Graduates!

God’s blessings to all of Timothy’s 2022 high school and college graduates! In worship this Sunday, you’ll enjoy a slide presentation of 4 grads who submitted information to share with the congregation. Click here to access the slides as well.

Next Generation Update

Much has occurred since the Feb. 6th Special Voters’ Meeting when Timothy’s Voters’ Assembly approved the lease of two double-wide modular units (trailers) for additional, temporary TLS classroom space.  All funding for leasing/ placing the trailers & necessary infrastructure is provided by a very generous Timothy donor. All praise and glory to God as this process addresses increased TLS enrollment.

One of the trailers (28’wide X 72’long, with two classrooms and two restrooms) will be installed directly north of the Wyatt Auditorium in July, with the second installed in July 2023. In addition to the trailer itself, infrastructure construction was involved to provide for electrical power, internet, water and sewer to each trailer.

Four contracts were planned, bid, and awarded: (1) civil engineering services; (2) lease for first trailer; (3) grading and underground piping; and (4) electrical construction to install necessary infrastructure.  Drawings & designs were prepared by each contract which are substantially completed and used to support a construction permit application to the City of Blue Springs on May 19th. Currently, all contractors are procuring materials & equipment; construction is expected to begin next week for scheduled mid-August completion, in time for the 2022-2023 school year.

As the Trailer Team Leader, Gary Flandermeyer has relentlessly and meticulously monitored all steps of this process to ensure quality performance and deadline adherence as top priorities. It has not been easy, considering today’s supply shortages and other construction challenges. We praise God for Gary’s dedication and commitment to this project. Please continue to keep this entire process in your prayers.

Fruit of the Spirit: PEACE

We live in a world that seems to be the direct opposite of peace. We are surrounded by storms of all kinds that threaten to overwhelm us and drown us. Faced with those challenges, we can get upset when it seems like God isn’t paying attention or even napping. But God offers us a peace that insulates us from the storms of the world, that allows us to know peace that the world can’t give. That peace is rooted in our identity as His children through Christ.

Tears of Sadness:  A Devotion

Facebook immediately brought tears to my eyes. On an ordinary day, a picture of my mother-in-law came up. Grief is a path chosen by none, yet eventually discovered by all and doesn’t care about our timetable. We all—every single one of us—will experience brokenness, pain, loss, and sorrow.

I’m convinced one of the most beautiful verses in all of Scripture is found in John 11:35—“Jesus wept.”  Those two small words speak a powerful truth: No matter what we’re facing, we aren’t alone. It’s not only a display of kindness; it’s a picture of Jesus’ friendship. He didn’t run from pain or rush through sadness, didn’t say “hurry up” or “get over it.” Jesus came and Jesus cried.

Jesus isn’t disappointed that we’re still sad; He just comes closer to weep with us. He isn’t surprised by our despair or our anger; He gets angry with death, too. He might say, “Peace, be still” and calm the storm, or He might show us how to walk on the waves that threaten to overtake, but no matter what, Hope is not going to let us sink. Our friend Jesus is acquainted with grief and familiar with waves. We have a God who cries. We have a reason to hope.

Secret Talent Hiding in Our Midst

The Sanctuary Choir will sing a special song in both RD Mize services this Sunday, May 22. It is called “I’ve Been Redeemed” and was written and composed by one our own, Laurie Milbrodt.

Laurie is a woman of many talents, and God is using her to care for her family, befriend crazy Christian friends like me, and share her heart and faith through music. She and her daughter Leah have performed several of her original pieces during our Cancer Prayer Services, but this is the first time for Timothy’s choir to take an original and share it with our church family.

James 1: 17 tells us that every gift is from God. We all have different talents and God-given gifts. They are all important and can be used to God’s glory. Worship with us this Sunday and enjoy the talents God has placed in our midst.
In His Service,
Miriam Lindemann

Fruit of the Spirit: JOY

Once again, we might get tripped up over how we define “joy.” We often see that as an emotional state, something that we experience when the outside factors around us line up correctly. We see joy as something that we can’t really control, so when we hear that Christians are to produce joy as part of our faith, we may think we have to fake it until we make it. But joy goes deeper than emotion. ‘JOY’ is the lens through which we look at life, a lens that is given to us because of whom we are in Christ.

Preparing Joyful Hearts

This Sunday, Pastor Ryan will continue the Fruit of the Spirit sermon series as he talks with us about “JOY.” He will encourage us to engage with the daily Scripture readings below in the week ahead. These passages will also be included in this Sunday’s worship bulletin. As you read, you are urged to focus on this question:  What does each text teach us about JOY?

  • Monday, May 16:  Psalm 16
  • Tuesday, May 17:  Luke 15: 8-10
  • Wednesday, May 18:  Isaiah 61: 10-11
  • Thursday, May 19:  Luke 1: 39-45
  • Friday, May 20:  John 16:16-24
  • Saturday, May 21:  Deuteronomy 16: 13-15

Happy Joyful Reading!

How to Relax When You Feel Anxious:  A Devotion

Anxiety is a part of our lives. I started noticing I was having trouble falling asleep. I whispered my prayer, “Please, God, you know how tired I am. Help me!” The minutes ticked away, hour by hour. I felt so exhausted. Why wasn’t God answering my prayer?

Sometimes we are such strong thinkers, pushing through to take care of others, getting work done, and juggling our responsibilities. We can get stuck in a state of heightened alertness that we don’t realize we are actually very stressed. So I began a new prayer. Instead of praying, Help me sleep or Take away my anxiety, I started asking God, “What does it mean to rest? Teach me how to relax.” One of the first Scripture passages that I asked God to help me better understand was a verse we often hear quoted: Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46: 10.

So I began to do two things to help me relax whenever I feel anxious:

  1. I take action to explore what brings me peace and joy—practical things, such as drinking tea, reading a book, or taking a walk.
  2. I pause to hear Jesus tenderly and lovingly calm my heart with a breath prayer to relax. You can do it, too! Here’s how:  Put aside your work and worries for just a moment. Rest in God’s presence. Whisper this simple breath prayer to yourself: Relax. Yep, “be still” literally means relax, loosen your grip. Sometime today, do something that helps you experience what peace and joy feels like for you. If it’s an especially hard day, rest in the thought of Jesus holding you close in His arms. He is with you this very moment, whispering, “I will help you. I love you.”

Sharing Christ’s Love . . . Over a Brew!

When you completed the interest survey last fall, Timothy’s GO Commission noticed you all love breweries, wineries, & coffeehouses, and they are here to deliver! Let’s reach out to our community at TLM and beyond. It’s pretty simple:

  1. Let us know if you want to come. Simply email Emily Wilson at emilymwilson515@gmail.com.
  2. Invite people who don’t go to TLM or know Jesus
  3. Share Christ’s love together over a brew

What you need to know:

  • Where:  Station 7 Restaurant, 9418 South Highway 7
  • When:  Sunday, May 22, 11:30am (after church)
  • Meeting spot:  West side of Wyatt Campus parking lot near the playground
  • Parking is limited at Station 7, so we’re asking people to consider parking at Wyatt Campus and for volunteers to assist in shuttling people to & from Station 7
  • Remember, this is about reaching out into our community with a missional heart, not sticking with just us TLM people! (which is why GO is planning this & not GATHER). So be sure to invite people who might not otherwise walk through TLM’s doors.

Let’s get social and share the love of Christ with our community! Contact Emily Wilson (emilymwilson515@gmail.com) with questions.

Celebrating a Baptism at TLS Chapel: Transforming Lives through Christ

On Wednesday, May 4, TLS students witnessed Pastor Ryan baptize one of their classmates during weekly Chapel! Gracie Evans, a student in Mary Beth Self’s 7th grade class, was welcomed into Christ’s family through this sacrament. What a blessing!

While teaching lessons in Religion class about Jesus’ baptism & Nicodemus’ asking how to be born again, Mrs. Self observed that Gracie was listening intently. Later, when asked privately if she would like to be baptized, Gracie enthusiastically said, “Yes!”

Please keep Gracie in your prayers and may God bless and keep her in her baptismal grace! To God be the glory!

TLS Observes National Day of Prayer

Last Thursday, students at TLS observed the 2022 National Day of Prayer by learning about its purpose and then praying as a school for their families, school, church, community, state, country, and world! Students lined the hallway outside their classrooms, held hands, listened to Pastor Ryan share about this day, and then followed along as Pastor Ryan led them in prayer. Thanks to TLS teacher Kim Brunkhorst and Pastor Ryan for organizing this meaningful participation in National Day of Prayer!

Fruit of the Spirit: Love

When we hear that the first fruit of the Spirit is love, we figure that we have that one figured out pretty well. We see ourselves as loving people. But far too often, we see love as merely an emotional state, something that we can fall into and out of without much control on our part. At least, that’s the way the world presents love. But when we look at what love really is, we realize that it’s more than just an emotional reaction. Love is an action, a commitment, something that we see first and foremost in God and His love for us.

Keep Walking: A Devotion

My deepest desire is to do God’s will, but many times I am confused about what that will is for me. I ask God for clarity and direction and then expect an answer to be displayed in lightning bolts across the sky. I wanted the fleece-and-dew kind of answer that Gideon had asked for in Judges 6: 36-40 because I was willing to do whatever it was that God wanted me to do as long as it was clear that it was His plan. My prayers would be repetitions of the same thing again and again: God, show me what You want me to do!

Sometimes discernment comes from paying attention to the movements of God in and around us. He is God with us, who is present in our lives. As Jesus said to His disciples in John 16: 13-15, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

We don’t need lightning-bolt messages written out in the sky. We don’t have to have fleece-and-dew moments for us to follow the paths God leads us down. In Christ, we have the Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth, who shows us the way, confirming His word to us when we need it. It may take some time of walking slowly forward before we are sure of the path, but we are able to go with confidence, knowing that whatever we do, wherever we go, God is going ahead of us and is with us.

Let Your Light SHINE
Fellowship, Serving and Shopping

From Timothy’s SHINE CREW:  Timothy was blessed to be among 8,000 Lutherans in Missouri to serve others this past week. Our time at Hillcrest, hanging with our faith family, was great! It filled our love tank. Not only did we feel useful, but we also appreciated a meaningful experience to meet Timothy members in a different setting, working for a common goal—Letting Our Light Shine for Christ! As a side benefit, there was SHOPPING as well!

We heard form a 19-year-old girl who’s been on her own since age 16. She was rescued from the street through Hillcrest Ministries where she now is self-supportive with life expenses and soon graduating from college. She is just one example of how Hillcrest has helped struggling families pay off over $100,000 in debt, just last year.

Volunteering at Hillcrest for Timothy’s 2022 SHINE outreach event opened our eyes to the amazing ministry that it is. Keep watching! We will offer the opportunity again, and perhaps we can meet up at the Hillcrest Thrift Store in Lee’s Summit to share a time of fellowship, serving, and SHOPPING! See you there!

Senior High Bonfire Call-Up

Senior high youth welcomed incoming 8th graders at the Call-Up Bonfire last Saturday evening. After braving the elements for an hour or so, they decided to head inside to warm up. Ryan Kuecker led a devotion on our call to love one another.

2022 Live Well Community Fair

Mark your calendar (and invite friends & neighbors) to attend Timothy’s 4th annual Live Well Community Fair on Sat., June 4, from 10am-2pm at the Wyatt Campus! It is FREE and fun for all ages!

There will be fun activities and helpful information for healthy living. Meet Jessy and Thomas, the Comfort Dogs, and learn about activities for kids and adults at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center, plus many resources for seniors. Kids will love to explore a fire engine and ambulance as well as challenge their parents on a 52-foot-long obstacle course. Check out Timothy’s website for details, and don’t forget to grab lunch prepared by a chef selling delicious and healthy food.

Annual Diaper Drive

Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle is organizing the annual Lutherans for Life diaper drive from Mother’s Day through Father’s Day. Donations may be placed in the bins at each campus and will be delivered to Impact Ministries in Blue Springs. Special needs include size 5 & 6 diapers, baby wipes, and feminine hygiene products. Contact Kaye Gray (kgray1024@yahoo.com) with questions. Thanks for your support!

17th Annual Adam’s Army Blood Drive

Make plans now to roll up your sleeves in memory of someone special, Adam Reed! The 17th Annual Adam’s Army Blood Drive will be Sunday, June 5, 9am-3m, in the Family Life Center at RD Mize.

Timothy thanks the Reed family for keeping their Adam’s legacy alive by hosting this annual blood drive. The eldest son of Jeff and Mary Reed, Adam was diagnosed with leukemia just before his 13th birthday, endured 2 ½ years in treatment with two bone marrow transplants and many rounds of chemo & radiation, and entered his eternal heavenly home in May 2005, at the age of 15.

The Timothy family was a huge support to Adam and the Reed family throughout his fight. “Adam’s Army” started as a group of church friends & family who faithfully lifted him in prayer, sent cards, visited, provided meals, organized fundraisers, and performed countless other acts of kindness & support.

After Adam went to heaven, his sister Jenna suggested that the family host a blood drive in his memory since blood and platelet transfusions were so vital during Adam’s treatment. It is a way to remember Adam while helping others in need. The first blood drive was held in May 2006. May God be glorified as we strive to save lives through donating blood!

Book your appointment today at savealifenow.org/group, enter group code: CB3C. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome as well. If you are unavailable to donate on June 5, doing so at any Community Blood Center close to that date and specifying Adam’s Army Blood Drive will be credited toward this annual effort. For additional details, contact Nancy Nowiszewski at 816.228.5300 Ext. 8040 or nancyn@timothylutheran.com. Questions concerning medical eligibility should be directed to 1.800.688.0900.  Thank you!

Fruit of the Spirit: Introduction

If you’re walking in the forest, how can you identify what kinds of trees you’re seeing? By their leaves or by their seeds or by their fruit, right? The same thing is true when it comes to a person’s life. We can identify who a person is or what they are based on what their lives produce. The same is true of a person’s faith. When a person’s faith is healthy, we naturally produce fruit in keeping with that faith. So over the next few weeks, we will look at the fruit a healthy Christian faith produces.

Turning into Mrs. Doubtfire:  A Devotion

I caught a glimpse of my reflection, stunned to discover I had somehow slipped on Mrs. Doubtfire’s lumpy bodysuit without realizing it. What was once funny to me instantly felt like a cruel joke. One day you might wake up and feel ancient, too, like your best days have passed you by. You’ll wonder, “When in the world did that happen?” as you examine the merciless brushstrokes of age.

Take heart, friends. You’re in good company. And today I get to remind you of an important truth: Ours is a God who is always and only for us! And because of whom God is and what He wants for our lives, we can trust that He can use whatever stage of life we are in for our good, His glory, and for the advancement of the Gospel. I wonder if this is what the psalmist was thinking when he penned Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Haven’t you found that the older you get, the better you understand the value of today? When “our wisdom is showing,” it has nothing to do with us and everything to do with God and what He has done and is doing in our lives. God challenges us to embrace our age as a gift and use it in a way that serves others and honors Him. It means we have another day to share the good news of the Gospel with someone who doesn’t yet know Jesus.

So, if you catch a glimpse of Mrs. Doubtfire, maybe it just means your wisdom is starting to show.

With schools dismissing for the summer in just a few weeks, families need more food to feed hungry mouths and will appreciate your generous donations. Thanks for your support!

Update from Missionary Carol Halter

Recently, Carol Halter in Hong Kong expressed thanks to Kay Lieb for sending additional paper crosses for Sunday School teachers to use in their classes. “Thank you and all other ladies again for all the crosses you send. They are so useful in proclaiming the Gospel to the Chinese people here. I am ever grateful.”

She also shared how God provided for a real need for the people of Hong Kong. After searching several weeks for free face masks for a co-worker to distribute with Gospel tracts, Carol acknowledged that she must inform the co-worker of no success in this endeavor. Just as she placed her hand on the telephone to call with this message, the phone rang. On the other end, an acquaintance from a Zoom prayer meeting a year ago called to offer, “I am wondering whether or not you might be able to use some face masks. My children want to provide free masks for people in Hong Kong, but they do not know how to do that.” Two days later, 10,000 face masks were delivered to my door. What an answer to prayer! As God says in Isaiah 65: 24, “Before they call, I will answer. While they are yet speaking, I will hear.” Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

“Bold Witness!”

What do you share without thinking about it? What is it that makes you so excited that you just have to tell everyone about it without really considering whether they want to hear it or not? What fires your passion and gives you life? God calls His people to have that kind of unquenchable passion for Jesus and the new life He gives us through His death and resurrection, the kind of passion that sends the disciples to stand firm on the truth. May we do that as well!

To be Known: A Devotion

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! Psalm 139: 17-18

It’s mind-blowing to realize that the Savior who died and was raised on Easter morning thinks of us nonstop, knows every single intricate details about us, and yet adores us.

Being known so fully sounds enticing and also a little terrifying. I mean, fully known means all the way. Completely. There’s a good reason that no person can fully know someone else; it’s overwhelming. God is the only one who can know us completely. He doesn’t just see the best, prettiest, and most presentable portions of our selves. God also sees every deep, dark, ugly, secret part, and still He chooses to love us. He knows it all and loves us completely anyway.

Psalm 139 contains many treasures that bring calm and joy to our hearts. Because of the truths it lists, we can be empowered to rest in being known. What a gift!

Confirmation Class of 2022 Timothy Lutheran Ministries

God’s blessings to the 2022 Confirmation Class! These confirmands completed Timothy’s three-year Confirmation ministry and publicly shared their faith stories in worship. We celebrate with them as they boldly confess their faith in Jesus as their Lord and Savior that was spoken for them at their baptism. The Rite of Confirmation will occur THIS SUNDAY, April 24, at the 9:15 worship service at RD Mize. We rejoice with them and their families!

“All Things New!”

We often say that you can’t go home again. It’s a stark reminder that time can’t go backwards. We can’t go back to the way things were. Even if we recycle or repurpose what we have, we can’t make old things new again. But God can. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, all things are made new. And that includes us, too!

Honest Questions Lead Us to Deeper Intimacy: A Devotion

He sits next to me, untwisting the small, green cap of an applesauce snack. After each squeeze, he tells me something small about his day—then he asks me, “Why is Russia attacking Ukraine? And why do people kill each other?” I take a deep breath, noticing how small his hands are and that he has dirt on his jeans. I tell him, “That’s a really good question,” then whisper, “Help!” to God as I realize I have the same questions.

Our natural tendency is to shield our kids from the harsher realities of the world and run from some of these questions that we are afraid of.

Our fear of questions and doubt reveal our limited understanding of love. John, a disciple of Jesus, wrote this, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4: 18

We can welcome the questions of our children and our own. Doing so will require us to dig beyond them and find the fears we hide and offer it all to God. Our fear and doubts can lead us to a deepened faith.

God, we are so often afraid. We cover it up with statements of faith and stubborn platitudes. Reach past it all—show us our real questions. Give us the courage to trust You. Be near to us in our doubts and deliver us from our fears with Your perfect love. Amen.

Timothy Volunteers Serve at One City Café

Do you know about this ministry? On the 5th Thursdays throughout the year (usually 3-4 times), the One City Café servants from Timothy have served the homeless in Kansas City at the Bishop Sullivan Center on Troost Ave. for several years.

Since COVID, the size of the group reduced from 6-7 each time rather than 18 serving from Timothy pre-COVID. Pictured here are those Timothy volunteers serving on March 31st. Back row: John Williams, Greg Galvin, Steve Schild; front row: Sandy Galvin, Janel Schild, Donna Williams.

If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, please contact Pat Bock (chbock1@gmail.com). Future dates for Timothy’s group to serve are June 30 and Sept. 29, 2002. Thanks to all involved in this ministry!

National Day of Prayer

All are welcome to take time to pray on the May 5 National Day of Prayer. Timothy’s sanctuary will be open, and the Prayer Room, at the back of the lobby, will be available form 9am-4:30pm. In addition to a booklet of prayers, a list of specific to Timothy and our community will be available for your use.

Next Generation:  TLS Modular Unit Project and Raise the Roof Updates

Last November, a gracious donor offered to fund the installation of three modular units at Wyatt to meet the need additional space for school expansion (1st unit installed Summer 2022, 2nd unit installed Summer 2023, 3rd unit for office space/meeting rooms installed after sale of RD Mize).

In early January, the preliminary project documents received general approval from the City of Blue Springs Planning Department. Timothy also received instructions concerning the construction permitting process. A “Wyatt Trailer Team,” chaired by Gary Flandermeyer, was appointed, and Voters approved the Wyatt Trailer Project at a special meeting on Feb. 6th.

Williams Scotsman was the successful bidder for the Unit 1 trailer lease (27’6” X 72’0” double wide) on March 7th. On Feb. 24th, Powell CWM of Independence was awarded a contract to provide civil engineering services. They are preparing trailer site layout and construction drawings & specifications; their work is nearly completion. On March 30th, a Request for Proposal was issued to three electrical construction firms to provide design/build services for the electrical construction related to this project. Bids are due April 11th.
Current preparation includes the issuance of the last construction contract, Site Preparation, which includes construction labor & materials for grading, installation of the support for the trailer, underground potable water, and sewer system piping and equipment. In early May, a permit application will be submitted to the City of Blue Springs. The project is currently on schedule for occupancy date of July 15, 2022. Please keep this process in your prayers.

The location for the outdoor storage building at Wyatt will be east of the parking lot behind the dumpster, south of the fire pit. Leadership is currently talking to potential vendors about designs. Leadership looks forward to sharing more updates soon. Thank you for supporting this project through prayer and special contributions. To God Be All the Glory!

Expectations Meet Reality

As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, many of the pilgrims there for Passover were expecting a warrior king, an action hero who would take the fight to the Romans and kick them out of their land. But instead, they received a humble king who came to die to save us. We need that reminder that sometimes, our expectations need to meet God’s reality so we can be delightfully surprised by His extravagant grace.

A Life That Stands No Matter the Storms:  A Devotion

The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. Psalm 103:8

The moment the phone rang, and I saw the number, my stomach dropped, and my heart jumped into my throat as I remembered the meeting I had set. I was mortified and full of shame. I answered the call and, in a rush, told her that I’d forgotten and was so, so sorry.

I held my breath as I waited for her response. She wasn’t angry, she understood that sometimes we just mess up, and she offered me another chance by rescheduling. As I hung up the phone, overcome by adrenaline, I sat on my stairs, forgiven and free, with a second chance to move forward.

Obviously, most of us will make bigger mistakes than missing a meeting. But whether we’re facing sins great or small, every single one of us has sinned. We’ve all fallen short of the holy, unblemished glory of God. And only Jesus can pay the price for our crimes.

Only Jesus can—and only Jesus does. He stands in the gap between the reality of our mistakes and the perfection of God, reaching across the canyon we’ve created to pull us back into relationship with our heavenly Father. Forgiven and Free!

Hillcrest Transitional Housing Update

Timothy has a new resident in its Hillcrest apartment! LaMecca Butler is very excited to be part of the Hillcrest community. Originally from upstate New York, she moved to West Memphis for a short while and then to the KC area a couple years ago. She is a mom but currently does not have custody of her 2 children. She is working hard to reunite with her kids as well as working through domestic issues. She sees Hillcrest as her opportunity to get her life back on track. She even told a family member about Hillcrest, who is also now part of the community.

LaMecca knows that our Timothy family is here for her and that she is in our prayers. Please feel free to reach out to LaMecca with a card or note that can be mailed to the office at Hillcrest Transitional Housing, 501 SW Mission Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64063—Attn: LaMecca Butler. Thank you for keeping LaMecca in your prayers.

Legacy:  Family, Church and Charity

Do you like to receive an invitation every other month to attend a free dinner and endure pressure to sign up with a financial planner? If that is you, the upcoming Legacy: Family, Church and Charity breakfast seminar is NOT for you.

Timothy’s Executive Board is sponsoring two identical educational seminars about ways to be more efficient in donating money to your favorite charity, save tax dollars, and maximize your donations to charitable organizations. Leadership prays that you keep Timothy Lutheran Ministries in your plans as one of your charitable organizations.

Generic information will be shared by Thrivent Financial local representative Paul Hawkins. The techniques are not unique to Thrivent products but instead can be used by anyone and any financial planning professional. This seminar will be a high-level presentation,  not a pressure sales meeting and no mention of Thrivent products. If you are already connected with a financial planner, that is perfect. Thrivent is providing these seminars as a favor to Timothy and will not pressure attendees to join Thrivent. Members who wish to discuss personal situations further may set up appointments to do so, but that is not the objective for these seminars. Timothy members who are financial advisers and planners are welcome to provide materials for distribution to seminar attendees. Please contact Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com) to take advantage of that opportunity.
