GodConnect Devotion – Choose What is Right

By |2021-02-01T07:07:03-06:00February 3rd, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 27:19-24 [NIV] | 19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed. 21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered. 22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” 23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” 24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

The crowd before Jesus called for the release of Barabbas. Pilate was torn and did not know what to do with Jesus. Perhaps Pilate hoped to let Jesus go as well. Luke records that Pilate said, “He has done nothing to deserve death. Therefore, I will punish him and then release him” (Luke 23:15–16). Pilate’s wife did not barge onto the scene confessing newfound faith in the accused Messiah, but she was unsettled by a dream and wanted to cut a wide path around any complicity in a plot to harm him. She was unduly troubled in ways she had never felt before. What was Pilot to do?

The crowd had other plans: Let Him be crucified! This was a remarkable request—crucifixion was the Roman penalty for rebellion and abhorrent to the Jews. Pilate was losing ground; the huge crowd in the courtyard before him seemed to be on the verge of a riot. Pilate asked the people to specify some crime that would make Jesus worthy of death: What evil has He done? he asked. The accusations against Jesus were flimsy, but the crowd kept on shouting more wildly and loudly that they wanted Jesus crucified.

For Pilate, there was never a doubt about Jesus’ innocence. Three separate times he declared Jesus not guilty. He could not understand what made these people want to kill Jesus, but his fear of the pressure the Jews would place on him made him decide to allow the crucifixion. Pilot went against what he knew was right. In desperation, he chose to do wrong. We share a common humanity with Pilate. At times we know the right and choose the wrong. God speaks to us through His Holy Spirit. It’s time we listen and follow God and choose what is right.

Prayer:
Lord, help me hear the voice of the Holy Spirit within me. Lead me on a path that chooses right over wrong. Guide me when I am called upon to make decisions that impact others. In Jesus name. Amen

Action Plan:
Even in the most challenging of time, I will seek God’s will and choose what is right.

GodConnect Devotion – Standing Firm in Faith

By |2021-02-01T05:18:08-06:00February 2nd, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 26:69-75 [NIV] | 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Like Peter, we may find ourselves in a difficult position as we proclaim God’s Word. In the heat of touchy situations such as abortion, same sex marriage, we may face persecution for our beliefs.  When Peter was confronted with his connection to Jesus, he made a natural and impulsive response—he lied. Peter gave the answer that Jesus had predicted: He denied knowing Jesus. When we are challenged to speak the truth in love, we too may backdown.

There were three stages to Peter’s denial that can lead to denying Christ in our lives. First, Peter acted confused and tried to divert attention from himself by changing the subject. Second, using an oath, he denied that he knew Jesus. Third, he began to curse and swear. Believers who deny Christ often begin doing so subtly by pretending not to know Jesus. When opportunities to discuss Christian beliefs come up, they walk away or pretend they do not know the answers. Like Peter, we may hide in the face of being challenged in our beliefs.

Peter went out and wept bitterly, not only because he realized that he had denied his Lord, the Messiah, but also because he had turned away from a very dear friend, a person who loved and taught him for three years. Jesus is our friend. Jesus says, “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32). Like Peter, we too can be restored and made right with God. As we walk each day in faith, God calls us to be bold witnessed of His love, even when it is hard.

It has never ceased to amaze me that we Christians have developed a kind of selective vision which allows us to be deeply and sincerely involved in worship and church activities and yet almost totally pagan in the day-in, day-out guts of our business lives … and never realize it.
-Keith Miller

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, lead us to be a bold witnesses of Your Son, Jesus. Help us to be strong in the face of persecution when others oppose us in our beliefs in You. Guide us to speak the truth in love to those who do not live according to Your will. Amen.

Action Plan:
I will seek to speak the truth in love when confronted about my faith and desire to live a life of Christ.

GodConnect Devotion – Abundantly Blessed

By |2021-01-31T06:51:10-06:00February 1st, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 32:1-5  [NIV] |  Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Blessed is a powerful word describing God’s goodness as He pours out His abundant grace and mercy upon us. Blessed are those whose sins have been forgive – abundantly blessed. Blessed are those whose sins are covered – abundantly blessed. God covers us with the blood of Jesus and forgives all our wrongdoings against Him and our neighbor. We are blessed beyond all understanding. God says to us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). God wants us to be free from the burden our sin.

Like the Psalmist, we feel the heavy weight of sin. The crushing blow of sin rips through our body as though we are wasting away. We groan and complain how the consequences of sin can be too great to bear. Are we afraid to speak to God the truth within our lives? We struggle to be real with God, holding on to our sin we want to believe that God does not know. When we hold on to the guilt and pain associated with sin, our hearts are heavy, and our strength is weak. We need to head to the cross of Christ.

God gives us an open invitation to be truthful and to unload our burdens, the action of our sin, upon Him. “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9). In Baptism God claims us to be His own and gives us the gift of faith to believe in the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection. What could be any freeing than to know our God invites us to be honest and real about our deepest secrets? We are blessed! It is time, as God’s children, to confess and receive His blessing.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the unconditional love you have with us. Lead us to the cross of Christ where we are blessed to share with you our sins. Help us experience you rest knowing we are Your forgiven children. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

Action Plan:
Take a moment and be real with God. Confess your sins to God and allow Him to bless you with the gift of forgiveness and give you His peace.

God Hears Our Cry for Mercy

By |2021-01-29T05:03:44-06:00January 29th, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 31:21-24  [NIV] | 21 Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. 22 In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.

In various ways we discover life can be incredibly stressful. The problems we face, the difficult situations we encounter, and the fears we have in facing the unknown can be overwhelming. Trusting the Lord throughout our trials and temptations takes faith in knowing God has our best interests at heart. David cried out to God, “Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege” (Psalm 31:21).

David reminds us that we can love the Lord even when it is difficult. Through David, we are reminded of God’s goodness and faithfulness. While being overtaken by his enemies, David experiences the wonders of God’s love. As challenging as life can be, we need to take time and open our hearts to God’s faithfulness that He will not leave us to wander alone. Jesus says to us, “I will never leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). In times of despair when it may seem God is void; we cling to our God who preserves those who are true to Him.

God calls us to be strong in Him. There is no expectation we should fight alone. Through the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives, God sustains us from drifting and falling away. He wraps His loving arms around us assuring us of the hope we have given and shed through the blood of Jesus. God has given us faith to trust in Him throughout the pain and heartache of life’s situations. When our lives feel like they are being taken under siege, God hears our cry for mercy and says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Prayer:
Lord, strengthen my faith to trust in your faithfulness. Help me through the hard times and open my eyes to see your wonders even when I feel cutoff from your sight. Thank You for the promised hope we have in Jesus. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will take a moment to see the wonders of God’s love in and all around me.

Serving the Lord

By |2021-01-28T04:58:33-06:00January 28th, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 25:31-36  [NIV] | 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

We live in a fast-paced world where we easily lose sight of those around us who may need assistance. Being distracted by the ways of the world and our drive to seek self first, we miss opportunities to serve others in the name of Jesus. Today’s reading reminds us of the core value for which we serve, what we do for others glorifies God and to serves Him through our acts of kindness and love.

Each of us is woven into God’s perfect plan. Since the beginning of creation, the fullness of God’s kingdom has been the goal when Jesus returns in His full glory. We are a part of the world’s most important movement—faithfully living as a disciple of Jesus—and we have the privilege of sharing it with others as we serve God.  Helping and providing others with the basic needs of life is pleasing to God. We learn in our reading that acts of care and concern for others touches the heart of God and fulfills His command to love our neighbors.

God does not call us to conquer the world on our own, he calls us to community as brothers and sisters in Christ. We support and encourage one another within our church family and move out into the community. Taking time to slowdown and view our surroundings enables us to see the opportunities God provides. Our service, as an individual or congregation, should be such a part of our lives that we would struggle to answer the question, “Lord, when did we serve you?”

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank and praise you for the blessings you shower upon us each day. Open our eyes and ears to see and hear the opportunity to serve You though others in acts of generosity. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will take time to seek an opportunity God has provided to serve Him through helping others.

Don’t Miss an Opportunity

By |2021-01-26T05:24:19-06:00January 27th, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 22:34-40 [NIV] | 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ i 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

We live in a time when technology allows us to stay connected with one another. God blesses us with tools to build relationships, share hope, and enjoy the fellowship of life with one another. Social media, Facebook, Instagram, and all the other platforms provided a means for people to share life together. It is unfortunate that the sinful state of our world turns blessings into a platform of sin and harm. Instead of being examples of Christ in a dark world, so many believers join in the chaos of sin, or merely walk away and miss the opportunity to be an example of change.

We look at others and judge them by their actions. We weigh our views and responses by the severity of sin. God does not rank the darkness of our sinful lives – sin is sin. Jesus is clear; we are to reflect his love completely towards him and others. Everything we do reveals our love to God, our families, our friends, and those we do not know. Jesus reveals to us that a person’s total being must be involved in loving God and others. Nothing can be held back because God holds nothing back. A person cannot maintain a strong relationship with God (loving God) without also caring for his or her neighbor (love your neighbor).

As Christians, we can choose to hide from the world and attempt to protect ourselves from the turmoil of the surroundings we live in. We have the option to be in the world and be witnesses of what God has accomplished and his desire for how we live our lives. We can block, unfollow, or even unfriend someone, but is that what God desires?  The world gives us permission to turn our heads and walk away. It is time people see Christ is us through our actions. Do not miss an opportunity to show love.

Prayer:
Lord, help us live a life that reflects our love to you. Lead us to places where people need to hear of your mercy and grace. When we are tempted to hide, give us strength to be bold. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will reflect the love I have for God to my neighbors.

Lord, Hear My Cry

By |2021-01-26T05:31:46-06:00January 26th, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 30:10-12 [NIV] | 10 Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me; Lord, be my help.” 11 You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.

Sometimes our circumstances and the hurts of life can leave us breathlessly grieving or in overwhelming pain. We have hit the wall; and it seems like there is no way out. Earthly hope vanishes into thin air. It is at that moment God comes through; his mercy and grace turn our tears and sorrows into laughter, and cries into song. Only God can carry us through the times when life seems hopeless.

We cry out to God seeking his mercy during the storms of life and he hears us. When we do not know the words to say, God’s Holy Spirit intercedes for us on our behalf. God knows and fully understands the desires of our hearts. We, on the other hand, cannot comprehend or begin to discern the mind of God and his ways. We question whether he is present and wonder if he cares. His Word reminds us, “8 ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,'” declares the Lord (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Our secure hope comes though the blood of Jesus, our Savior. Jesus did not just die, he rose from the dead. We live our lives today in Christ knowing that this place, this time, is only for a moment. In Jesus we have the gift of eternal life in him; the victory is won.  Jesus’ life is the example for those who believe and put their trust in him.  Without Christ’s resurrection all would be without hope. The life, death, and resurrection of Christ gives us hope and confidence to cling to his outstretched arms. We need not doubt if God is listening or responding, he already has us wrapped tightly in his care.

Prayer:
Lord, there are time it feels you are not listening or responding to our cries of help. Help us to put our trust in you with confidence your ways are much higher than ours. Cloth us with your joy and turn our sorrows into praise. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will cast my burdens on Jesus and seek his will to be done.

It Takes a Team

By |2021-01-23T07:36:56-06:00January 25th, 2021|GodConnect|

Exodus 18:13-23 [NIV] | 13 The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14 When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?” 15 Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will. 16 Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. 21 But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23 If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”

We all look for a hero, that special person who can do it all, right? The Israelites looked to Moses for answers to fix the community problems. Moses sought out the challenge and made himself available to everyone thinking that was God’s will for his life – to handle the full load. We do the same thing in our churches. We seek a leader who has the gifts and talents to meet the needs of all people. Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, witnessed how inefficient Moses was to the people in his struggle to be all things to everyone who approached him. We can learn a great lesson from Moses in how we can be a part of the solution, and not the challenge.

History repeats itself and today we see churches burning out their pastors and key leaders over unimportant matters that only distract the church from its key purpose – making disciples of all nations and teaching them to obey Jesus. We place unrealistic burdens upon our leaders drawing them away from the purpose for which they were called. When the purpose of being the church of God gets diluted by the business of church, people get tired, restless, and eventually lose site and hope. Satan would have it no other way than for the people of God to be distracted from the true purpose for which one serves.

Being and doing church is a team effort woven together with many gifted people whom God has called to lead. God chooses capable men and women to serve those entrusted to the churches care. As God’s people serve together in harmony, each can stand the strain and challenges. It takes everyone in the church doing their part together to build thriving ministries and opportunities to grow God’s kingdom. We must ask ourselves, “What is my role in the church of God? How can I help, and not hinder, as God leads?” Yes, we all want a Moses leading the way, but God tells us it is not good to have a leader take on a heavy load. It takes team doing their part together and you are on the team.

Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes to the opportunities to serve you and your church. Lead me to be an instrument of your mercy and grace. In Jesus name. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will seek God’s will for my life in being a team player in the mission of the church to be God’s instrument.

God, Relieve My Troubles

By |2021-01-21T16:18:51-06:00January 22nd, 2021|GodConnect|

Psalm 25:16-21  [NIV] | Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish. Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. See how numerous are my enemies and how fiercely they hate me! Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you.

There are times in life we feel lost and overwhelmed. The troubles of the world and our sinfulness can weigh heavy upon us. During our storms in life, it can feel as though there is no place to turn, not end in sight. We seek to handle situations in life on our own only to discover greater despair. God can and will use such opportunities to draw us to our knees so that all we can do is look up to him for help. It is in these moments we ask God to turn his eyes upon us and be gracious.

Jesus is bold to tell us, “… in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus promised us peace through our union with him—for he has overcome the world by rising from the grave. The world, Satan’s system that is opposed to God, will give believers terrible trouble and opposition. We cannot deny there is an evil force constantly working against us. It is only through Christ can we be rescued from our afflictions. In Christ, we take our refuge.

Despite challenges we face; Jesus promises to always be with us with outstretch arms. He is ready to relieve our troubles and free us from grief, pain, and sorrow. Like David, we too pray, “May integrity and uprightness protect me,” Having already confessed his sinfulness and being confident in God’s grace, David prays for God’s help that he may have integrity and be upright. A life lived for Christ can help bring hope and comfort in our times of difficulty.

Prayer:
Lord, lead me to the cross when we feel lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of our hearts and free us from our anguish. Help us to live a life worthy of your praise. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will turn to the Lord and honestly share my afflictions.

What Must I Do?

By |2021-01-19T07:36:13-06:00January 21st, 2021|GodConnect|

Matthew 19:16-21 [NIV] | 16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” 17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “ ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ h and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” 20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

People all around are asking, “What must I do to enter eternal life?” Our society is misled by the world into believing they can do good things for others to gain access into God’s heavenly kingdom. Feelings of uncertainty can fill the mind of a person who is unable to fully accept the forgiveness God freely gives us through death and resurrection of Jesus. We can face times of doubt as Satan temps us into denying the gift of grace and mercy of God. Unfortunately, there are people who live their lives wondering if they have passed some test.

Like the young man in our reading, we need to evaluate ourselves and see what interferes with the relationship we have with God so we can experience his full blessings. We get distracted by the business of life and the collection of material wealth. We can get trapped into seeking the things of the world not putting our complete trust in God. Jesus does not ask us to giveaway our wealth, our material blessings, or taking time to experience God’s creation. He wants to share the importance of letting go of the things that hinder us from being a follower of Christ.

When asked the question, “What do I lack?” We should look at our calendars, check registers, list of possessions, or work schedule and see what is inhibiting a growing relationship with our Lord, Our Savior. Salvation is not based on our good deeds; Jesus has already completed the good work. We can get distracted and lose sight of God’s plan for our lives. God’s first Commandment, “Love the Lord with all you heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” It is time we make sure God is first in our lives. We can rest in the sure hope that we have already inherited the gift of eternal life.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to remain focused on you and your love for me. Give me strength to let go of the things in life that hinder my relationship with you. May I always put you first. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action Plan:
Today I will evaluate the things in life that hinder me from growing in my relationship with God.
