LENT JOURNEY | HOLY WEEK – 1

By |2022-04-09T06:46:36-05:00April 10th, 2022|GodConnect|

Mark 11:1-11 | As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ” They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, may we know you more clearly, love you more deeply and follow you more closely.

PALM SUNDAY

Daily Thought: Taking A Stand (Mark 11:1–11)
There will come moments for us as Christ-followers that we will need to take a stand. This is what Jesus did that first Palm Sunday. He makes a decision to enter Jerusalem. He offers his witness to God’s Kingdom in the Holy City. He enters the city in such a way that no one can ignore him. He takes on the messianic role, the role foretold by the ancient prophet Zechariah in the Old Testament. He comes humbly and vulnerably, riding on a donkey. This is how Jesus takes his stand. He does this because he knows that he is not alone. Lent is a good time for us, as his disciples, to identify where we need to take a stand. We too can know that we are not alone as we do this.

DAILY PRACTICE:
Begin with the daily prayer request. Read the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem in Mark 11:1–11. What strikes you most about the way Jesus takes his stand? How do you respond to him? Consider today where God is calling you to take your stand for your deepest convictions. Perhaps you can practice for this moment by doing something courageous today. Know that you are not alone, so lean into the reality of God’s presence with you. Courage and faith are always needed if we are going to follow in our Master’s footsteps.

LENT JOURNEY | LENT IS FOR SHARING – 7

By |2022-03-26T05:04:40-05:00April 9th, 2022|GodConnect|

John 3:16 | For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Matthew 6:1-4 | “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, help me become more generous.

DAILY THOUGHT: A GENEROUS GOD
Has it ever struck you how generous God is? To begin with, God has given you and me the unrepeatable gift of our lives. In addition, not only has God created us, God has also given us all the gifts of this world to enjoy and to share. But God’s generosity does not stop here. God has also poured his love out to us in and through Jesus Christ. This is the staggering extravagance of the broken-open heart of God. As gospel writer John puts it: “For God so loved this world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Will you today allow your heart also to be broken open by this generous God?

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily prayer request. Today take time to meditate on the generosity of God. One simple way in which to do this is to look at the cross. As you do this, open your closed heart to receive the generous love of God. Here is a prayer you can say aloud: “Lord God, thank you for all your gifts. Thank you for the gift of my life and the lives of my loved ones. Thank you for all the gifts of creation that come to me freely each day. Most especially, thank you for the gift of your love shown on the cross. Please break open my closed heart that your generosity may flow through me.”

Acts 4:32-37 | All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Acts 2:43-47 | Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

DAILY THOUGHT: GENEROUS SHARING
The early Christian community was a remarkably generous community. You can catch glimpses of the ways in which they shared their lives with each other when you read the book of Acts (see 2:43–47; 4:32–37; 6:2–7). Their generosity had many different dimensions, ranging from the interpersonal to the material. They gave time to each other, eating and praying together; they shared their goods in common and gave to the needy around them. Little wonder thousands of outsiders were attracted to their life together. There was something radically different about the way they lived. Rather than cling to whatever they possessed, they shared generously their lives and their possessions with one another. They were a sign of contradiction in a greedy and stingy world. Can this be said about us and the faith-communities to which we belong?

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily prayer request. In your quiet time sit with God and make a list of the different ways in which we can be generous. We can share our time, our abilities, our material and financial resources and so much else. Think of one specific way in which you can extend yourself for someone else over the next twelve hours. It may be by giving them your time, or helping them out with one of your skills, or giving a financial gift. As always, though, speak with God about which one way you are going to be generous. And remember, a good guideline is to ask, “Lord, what will most express your love where I live and work?”

Matthew 6:33 | But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

DAILY THOUGHT: JOYFUL SIMPLICITY
“Live simply so that others may simply live” is not only a catchy phrase, it is also wise spiritual counsel as well as good financial advice. Simplicity frees us from over concern about material things, makes greater generosity possible and helps us to live more freely and lightly. However, we need to be careful not to make simplicity a set of external rules. This will turn something joyful into a terrible legalism. Simplicity is first and foremost an inward reality – an inner attitude that expresses itself outwardly in the way we live. It comes from putting Christ first in our lives and arranging our lives around his priorities. This could be one reason why Jesus taught, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these other things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).

DAILY PRACTICE:
Begin with the daily prayer request. Take time with God to think of one thing you can plan to give away over the next few days. Often Lent is a time of giving up things like sugar or coffee or sweets. Let this Lent be an opportunity for you to rather give away something of value. As you think about what it may be, make it a matter of prayer. “Lord,” we can pray, “show me what I can give away so that someone else may be blessed.”

Matthew 6:1-4 | “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, help me become more generous.

DAILY THOUGHT: DIFFERENT REWARDS
Did you notice Jesus’ words about different rewards in the Bible passage? When we do good deeds to be seen and praised by others we get one kind of reward. This reward is that we are seen and praised by others. This is what we wanted and this is what we receive. When we do good deeds in secret, our Father who is also in secret, rewards us. While Jesus does not specify exactly what this reward is, we do discover what it is in our own experience. At the very least, we come to know God better and experience the joy of being God’s friend and partner in doing good. God’s reward, we learn, is truly out of this world!

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily prayer request. With God reflect on what happened as you carried out your plan of serving someone without talking about it. How did you feel doing it? How did the other person respond? What was your experience of God in this experiment of secret service? Share your thoughts and feelings with the Lord and listen to what the Lord may be saying to you. Plan another small action of secret service for the next twelve hours.

DAILY THOUGHT: SECRET GENEROSITY
In the weekly Bible reading Jesus instructs us that, when we give to those in need, “do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret” (verse 3). These words suggest that Jesus would like us to learn how to give to others without making a “big deal” about it. Rather, he wants to become people from whose hearts good deeds naturally flow. We don’t even remember ourselves. We do generous deeds because we are generous people. It would be hard for us to do otherwise. Does this describe you? Would you like to become this kind of person?

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily request prayer. In your quiet time today think of one act of secret service you can plan to do the next twelve hours. It may be to listen to a colleague, or to help your kids with their homework, or to take out the rubbish, or to bake a special dish for a neighbour, or to give an anonymous gift to someone you know who is struggling. The possibilities are endless. The key, however, is to serve without talking about it with anyone. It is likely that someone may see what you are doing and mention it. When this happens, you can simply respond, “It was just something I wanted to do.”

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, help me become more generous.

DAILY THOUGHT: ALMSGIVING
When Jesus speaks about giving alms in our weekly Bible passage, the word sounds strange and old fashioned in our modern ears. Essentially what it means is giving to those who are poor. Learning how best to go about doing this can be very challenging. Often our giving to others can take away dignity from those on the receiving end, increase the distance between them and ourselves, and perpetuate unjust systems that should not be there in the first place. On the other hand, when we do not share what we have with those in practical need, their desperate situation may become even worse. We need much wisdom and insight if we are to take Jesus’ words about generously sharing seriously.

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily prayer request. Read the Bible passage for the week again, paying particular attention to Jesus’ words about almsgiving. Think about your experiences of generous sharing with those in need. Here are some reflection questions: How generous do you think you are? Would you like to grow in generous sharing? Has your sharing with others built healthy and mutual relationships between yourself and others or has it hindered such relationship? Share your reflections with the Lord and listen to what he may say to you.

Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, help me become more generous.

DAILY THOUGHT: FOR OUR FATHER’S EYES ONLY
In the first verse of this week’s Bible passage Jesus encourages us to be so eager to love and please God that we do everything for God’s eyes alone. To be sure there are often other eyes watching what we do, sometimes very closely, but we are not seeking to win the approval of those around us with our good deeds. There is certainly nothing wrong with others seeing what we do. Jesus is not saying that we must hide our good deeds, although we may do so in certain circumstances. The point that Jesus wants to make strongly concerns the motivations of our hearts for doing what we do. As his followers, he wants us to learn how to live for our Father’s eyes only.

DAILY PRACTICE:
Begin with the new daily prayer request. Read slowly the Bible passage for the week (Matthew 6:1–4). Meditate today on the first sentence: “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.” Take some time to reflect with the Lord about your motivations for doing good deeds. Share these reasons with him as honestly as you can and listen to what he says to you.

LENT JOURNEY | LENT IS FOR FASTING – 7

By |2022-03-26T04:47:16-05:00April 2nd, 2022|GodConnect|

Matthew 6:16-18 | “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, deepen our focus on you.

DAILY THOUGHT: WHENEVER YOU FAST
Quite clearly Jesus expected his followers to fast. In the weekly Bible passage he did not say, “If you fast…” but rather “Whenever you fast…” (Matthew 6:16). He must have known that there are immense spiritual benefits to the regular practice of fasting. As we have emphasized throughout this week, it helps tremendously to develop our Christ focus. This in turn often leads us into first-hand experiences of God’s amazing resources. We find ourselves empowered to do things for God that otherwise we would not have been able to do. For this reason, it is highly unusual to find any Christ-follower in history doing great things for God without a sustained practice of regular fasting.

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily prayer request. Reflect today on the past week. How has the Lord responded to your daily prayer request during this week? After you have thought about this question, take some time to think of the future. How can fasting become a sustained practice in your walk with God? You may want to begin with a small step like missing out on one meal each week, or a bigger one like making one day a week a fast day.

LENT JOURNEY | LENT IS FOR FASTING – 6

Isaiah 58:6-7 | “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Matthew 6:16-18 | “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

DAILY PRAYER REQUEST: Lord, deepen our focus on you.

DAILY THOUGHT: SOCIALLY AWARE FASTING
Fasting, when it is genuine, will also lead us into a greater awareness of the suffering around us. We will find ourselves becoming more responsive to the needs in our midst, especially those oppressed by hunger and poverty. This could be one reason why the prophet Isaiah once cried out: “Is this not the fast I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the things of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not hide yourself from your own kin?”(Isaiah 58:6–7)

DAILY PRACTICE:
Pray the daily prayer request. Today meditate on the above words of Isaiah. How do you honestly respond to them? What do you sense God may be saying to you? Is there one way in which you can take seriously God’s challenge about socially aware fasting in the next twenty-four hours? Be as specific, creative and practical as you are able in thinking about this.
