As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Mad Prayers”

Our idea of prayer is often bound in a calm approach to our gracious God. But sometimes the emotions are running high. If we search the Psalms, we find prayers that are not only intense but emotion-filled. Today we look at some shocking words that flow from the mouth of David in prayer as we wrestle with the question, “What are we supposed to do with these hostile-feeling prayers?”

Recall God’s Faithfulness

Will You Remember the Gift or the Giver?

It was Valentine’s Day this week. I am a horrible gift giver to my husband, but he continues to be my knight in shining armor. I hope he doesn’t hold my gifts against me but instead looks at the giver.

God knows that human hearts can easily become so focused on the gifts that we forget the Giver. “When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would give you — a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build, houses full of every good thing that you did not fill them with, cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant — and when you eat and are satisfied, be careful not to forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.” Deuteronomy 610-12.”

The Israelites would enjoy occupying safe cities and beautiful homes, having access to water and a variety of delicious foods. These blessings would be an intense contrast to their forty years of living in tents in the wilderness. But be careful, God said. Don’t forget Me. I’m the One who made your freedom and flourishing possible. The One you still need — in times of plenty and in times of want.

We, too, need to accept God’s gentle warning today. Take time today to remember what God has done in your life. Thank Him. And recommit to living dependent on Him.

“2023 LENT”

Joining Jesus on His Mission

Have you ever seen a life changed? And I don’t mean like in small, little ways. I’m talking about 180 degrees, darkness-to-light kind of changed? That’s exactly what Jesus does every single day. It’s this amazing, incredible, eternal life-changing thing. And guess what? He is inviting and calling YOU to be a part of this eternally life-changing work. And that doesn’t require a theological degree or traveling around the world. He’s calling you (us) into your own community in very simple ways.

Adopt a Missionary

Our senior high families are heading to Tulsa this summer to be the hands and feet of Jesus in and throughout the community. It’s going to be an amazing opportunity to grow in faith, community, and learn more of what it means to Join Jesus on His Mission. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are trying to raise about $7,500 to cover the full costs of the trip. If you are willing, grab an “Adopt a Missionary” envelope in the Narthex with a $ dollar amount on it. Then place cash or a check in the envelope with that amount of $ or more with a note saying “YOUTH MISSION TRIP.” Want to know more…

Your donation will help fund lodging (staying at a local church on the floor but they provide pads and showers etc. for us), travel (gas, rental car if needed), meals, small emergency fund, extra mission projects, one local outing, and to support our onsite coordinator in Tulsa.

Our Timothy Lutheran Youth Family Church team will be serving through a mission organization called Praying Pelicans. Our partnership with Praying Pelicans allows us to support a long term relationship through sustainable ministry within these communities we will be going to. The mission trip will allow us to serve alongside a local church in Tulsa that is deeply involved in their community and seeking to address real needs. Our Timothy team will be the hands, feet, and heart on behalf of the church to the community. Our teams desire is to work with youth in various capacities such as sports camps, VBS programs, youth ministries, or other needs that are unfolding in the community we will be in. These opportunities will allow the local churches to continue to connect with new families and share the love of Christ with them. We are currently working with Praying Pelicans and the local church we will be teamed up with to figure out all the details in the coming months.

Next Generation Update

1. Will the north site worshipers be assured that, if and when all worship is at south sit only, there will be a service offered that will be the same as currently presented—in style, music, robed clergy, etc.?
Response: Absolutely, the intention is to offer a service as close to the RD Mize worship experience as possible, including style, hymns & songs, robed clergy, etc. It will certainly require some adjustments, and people may need to adapt to some things not quite “matching” with RD Mize, but we would work to make it as close as possible. Wyatt worshipers may also need to adapt to some things not quite “matching” the current format as well. Logistics such as worship times, transition times between services, and possibly offering service on different day are examples of those adjustments.

2. If and when the north site is sold, will items from the north site be removed and used at south site, such as altar, suspended cross, candles, banners, baptismal font, lectern, pulpit?
Response: Yes, these items can be moved to Wyatt for use at all services with specific logistics, such as placement, incorporation with current Wyatt structures, and storage as needed.

3. If the north site is sold before any construction takes place at south site, how will all the ministry activities at north be met, such as location for funerals, daytime Bible study groups, evening events that might conflict with evening school events, etc.?
Response: This is a great question and one of the most challenging. It will take cooperation and Christian understanding from everyone to move forward in ministries to build God’s kingdom for all generations. It undoubtedly will look different, in some cases much different. Some activities like Bible Studies and Small Group Meetings are great opportunities to meet offsite, providing a more loving and caring environment for its members. Other offsite resolutions for larger groups may require partnering with other local churches or venues. Some ministries can use the larger classrooms in the evenings. If extra space is needed as soon as within the next year, one-half of the second trailer will be available for meeting/event space and/or storage until it is needed as a classroom. On-site funerals can be held in the auditorium with the style and setting presently provided at RD Mize or Wyatt. Continuation of funeral luncheons, as we now know them, will be challenging, requiring significant creative thinking, but not impossible to overcome.

4. Since mobile classrooms are meeting the needs of the school ministry for 5 years (?) or more, wouldn’t it make sense to build a sanctuary as the next step of moving all ministries to the south campus?
Response: In the original Readiness Committee work, leadership prepared future expansion plans to include a small, 100-seat chapel as the highest priority in the first phase of construction. However, based on the results of the 2020 congregational survey which showed high priority for overall children, youth, and school ministry, plan for the chapel were placed in the second phase and would also include a kitchen, dining room/worship space for approximately 150 people, office space, youth rooms, conference rooms, and hallways. The first phase then became additional classrooms for church and school use. A large sanctuary to seat 600+ people is currently in phase three. At this time, we understand the City of Blue Springs allows 5 years for use of mobile classrooms but may be flexible if permanent classrooms are under construction or soon will be. Early Communion Class
Timothy once again offers Early Communion Class to 5^th through 8^th grade students who
have not already been instructed about this sacrament. This class serves as a prerequisite
for Confirmation. One parent, guardian, or other adult must attend with the student.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Prayers of the Saints: Paul’s Prayer”

Paul once asked God for help. He has a thorn in his flesh, something that he desperately wants to get rid of. But God doesn’t give him what he wants. Why? Because God is trying to teach Paul something about faith. It’s a lesson we can grow from as well.

Recall God’s Faithfulness

I attended a Celebration of Life this weekend. Many of my children’s friends were in attendance. What a blessing to be together even for this challenging moment. It was in the church where these young adults were children. I recalled welcoming them as a Sunday School teacher with a hug, where we sang Jesus loves me, and where God poured the Holy Spirit into each of their lives. It was good to take time to recall and recount God’s faithfulness.
It is good for all of us to recall what God has done in our lives, especially when we didn’t know what He was doing at the time. There are big moments we each recognize as pivotal moments where God led and we knew if He didn’t show up, His plans wouldn’t work. Jesus has done miracles in our lives.
Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36:5
Remember, God is faithful. Take time to recall. He is leading us on the greatest adventure with Him. And we can respond with obedience and loving faithfulness.

Our Timothy team will be the hands, feet, and heart on behalf of the church to the community as they work with youth in sports camps, VBS programs, and youth ministries. These opportunities will allow the local churches to continue to connect with new families and share the love of Christ with them. The goal for Timothy’s group is to raise $7,500 to cover working with an onsite Praying Pelicans team member, travel (gas, rental car if needed), meals, lodging (staying at a local church on the floor but pads and showers are provided), and a small emergency fund. Timothy’s youth thanks the congregation for its prayerful and financial support thus far and looks forward to a successful Lenten Dinner fellowship and fundraiser opportunity.
Wednesday, March 8 (Pizza): Timothy Lutheran School Scholarship Fund School ministry always appreciates the opportunity to offer scholarships to families needing financial assistance to send their children to TLS. Generous support of this Lenten Dinner opportunity will augment other fundraisers such as the Annual Auction. It is a blessing to support school families with this financial assistance.
Wednesday, March 22 (Sloppy Joe’s): Festival Committee In addition to the annual Timmy Burger Booth at the Fall Fun Fest, from which proceeds fund non-budgeted facility needs, Timothy’s Festival Committee is hosting a Lenten Dinner to contribute to the repair of the elevator at RD Mize to bring it back to functionality. Thank you for your support to make this a reality.

Next Generation Update

Thank you to those who have submitted questions and comments regarding the three topics on the agenda for the Special Voters’ Assembly Meeting on March 26th. Over the next seven weeks, the Executive Board will provide short responses to a few each week in Timothy Connects. Questions may be submitted online at www.timothylutheran.com (Church tab, then Next Generation tab) or placed in Suggestion Box at Information Center at each campus.

Please plan to attend this special meeting, as a quorum of 40 communicant members ages 18 & over is required to conduct business. The meeting will start a few minutes after the close of the 10am service. Timothy’s current bylaws stipulate that members must be present to vote: “It shall be the privilege and duty of every voting member to attend the Assembly meetings. By failing to attend such meetings, a member waives the right to cast his/her vote during that meeting.” (Article B-1, B2) Until such time that a possible amendment is written & approved to allow and provide for electronic voting, absentee voting of any format is not available. Voting will be by secret ballot with each of the three proposals listed separately on one ballot per voting member. Final tallies will be announced before meeting adjourns.

Questions /comments submitted so far relate to the proposal about placing RD Mize Campus on the market. They fall under the following general categories: Worship Accommodations, Space for Events/Meetings, Timing, Storage Accommodations, and Perceptions.

Below are a few of the questions/comments with short responses. Additional ones will be addressed in the upcoming weeks.

Will updated info about proposal to sell RD Mize, including how we arrived at the decision to do so at this time and what comes next, be shared prior to the March 26 vote?

Response: As background, in fall 2019, Timothy asked, “Is it time to consolidate to Wyatt?” At the time, Timothy received unsolicited inquiries about buying RD Mize, finances/debt was/is significant, and Timothy’s 2020 Vision (developed in 2013) included goals to create a transition plan for one campus ministry at Wyatt. A Next Generation Steering Committee was formed. Surveys were developed, administered, and collected. The membership survey results supported one campus at Wyatt. Task force teams, composed of many Timothy members, were organized to analyze and make recommendations about various aspects of the transition. Several cottage meetings were held to gather congregational input. Three mission focus areas were adopted (Children & Youth, Member Involvement, and Community Outreach), all of which have advanced with the call of a Children & Youth Minister, prayer emphases, and Joining Jesus on His Mission (unfolding soon). Just as the cottage meetings were wrapping up, COVID hit and changed all our lives, including next steps regarding many Timothy ministries. Members are encouraged to review results of survey and other Next Generation documents on Timothy’s website(Click on Church, then Next Generation). With the return of a degree of normalcy over the past several months, leadership continues to grapple with the same situation as pre-COVID and recommends moving forward with the plan now. The Isaiah 43:19 verse, “See, I am doing a new thing!” continues to guide leadership in moving forward.

Would you consider a large warehouse building without electricity for storage built by members or Laborers for Christ? How do you propose to complete more storage space at Wyatt for all things at RD Mize?

Response: Timothy is blessed to accept a member’s offer to store items in his personal storage facility. Leadership is investigating possibility of renting storage space at a local church. Laborers for Christ, a ministry of the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, discontinued operations on June 30, 2021. In addition, constructing a large storage building is beyond the capability of 99.9% of Timothy members, and the potential for injury could be significant. It would be difficult for Timothy members to meet the City requirements to self-perform the permitting and constructing details. Inventorying and deciding what items can be donated, sold, or discarded due to non-use for a long time will be necessary. It is also possible that necessary items will need to be stored in members’ homes on an interim basis.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Prayers of the Saints: Jeremiah’s Prayer”

: Sometimes life just gets to be too much for us. Like the prophet Jeremiah, we may feel like it’s all too much and we may not be sure how to express that frustration to God. But Jeremiah gives us the example and the key of how we can go through that pain and anguish in a way that remains faithful to God.

“The Gifts Waiting in Your Coldest Winter“

Why do I live where the air hurts my face?” This cold snap keeps most of us indoors, unless absolutely necessary.

“If you choose not to find joy in the cold, you will have less joy in your life but still the same amount of cold.” So for two minutes, on this frigid morning, I stood outside and beheld

the beauty. The stillness was breath taking.
We all need that reminder, and I don’t mean primarily for the winter seasons that happen outside our door – but for the winter seasons that happen inside of our hearts and homes. In life, our very souls shiver inside the iceboxes of disappointment and despair.
So what are we to do in the unavoidable winter seasons of the soul? The Apostle Paul wintered. In one such wintering, Paul spent months on an island where he encountered people who were unusually kind. They built a fire and welcomed him because it was so cold (Acts 28:2). Paul’s wintering seasons gave him three key gifts: safe harbor, opportunities to share Jesus in a different kind of way, and moments of abiding with others.
Instead of figuring out how to escape cold seasons, perhaps we can learn how to winter well within them. To see winter seasons as safe harbors. To encounter Jesus in unexpected ways. To gather around cozy fires. To abide.

Livestreaming Wyatt Service

Over the past few weeks, the livestreaming function of the Wyatt service has experienced some challenges. Timothy thanks Rod Brehm for his expertise and passion to convert the 10am service to YouTube. Baby STEPs Ministry
Supporting Timothy’s Expectant Parents

Is your family growing? Or do you know someone whose family is growing? Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle organizes the Baby STEPs ministry which supports and celebrates the new life with which God blesses our Timothy families.
Volunteers offer personal contact through phone calls, cards, and prayers. The homecoming of a new infant is also celebrated with a home visit and meals provided by “Meals for Moms” volunteers. Each Timothy baby receives a new pair of white booties, handmade by a volunteer, as a keepsake from the church, symbolizing being washed clean and made God’s child at baptism.

Tired of the winter blahs? Love to play 10-Point Pitch? Make plans to attend the revival of Timothy’s Card Club on Friday, Feb. 10, at 7pm in the RD Mize Fellowship Hall. Worshiping Faithfully in Uncertain Times

Although we do not like to think about the risk of violent acts or emergency situations occurring within the church walls, preparation for them is essential. Timothy’s leadership is committed to forming a Church Safety & Security Team to better provide an atmosphere of comfort, refuge, worship, and learning for those that enter our church walls and church events, recognizing the value of its people and facilities and embracing their safety and security.
No church should assume that “it will not happen here” as that attitude contradicts what Matthew says in Chapter 10, verse 16: “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”

LUMAA Community Outreach Project

LUMAA met for their January meeting at Ascension Lutheran Church. Shelia Rancatore from Cornerstones of Care shared how the organization serves as an umbrella with groups we are familiar with: Ozanam, Merilac, Gillis and Swaffort, and over 35 more groups Missouri wide. These groups work with children including those going into foster care. These children often come to them with nothing , which prompted LUMMA to gather supplies, including hygiene items, personal items, diaries, books, blankets, toys, games, cosmetics, pens and markers, stuffed animals, and many more. The LUMAA members’ churches, including Timothy’s LWML, were very generous! As a hands-on community outreach project at the meeting, twelve duffle bags for
children of all ages, were filled and delivered to Gillis Home, whose staff there was very excited and thankful to receive them.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Prayers of the Saints: Jonah’s Prayer”

Jonah’s story is familiar to us. We know all about the wrong-way prophet who tries to hide from God instead of going to Nineveh. But what we may not realize is that, during that three day stay in a fish’s stomach, Jonah spent the time in prayer. He’s hit rock bottom because of his mistakes. His prayer can show us what true repentance looks like.

For His Faithful Love to Us Is Great: A Devotion

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Colossians 3:2
What do you spend your time thinking about? Our answer is probably a long list of hope and dreams, fleeting worries and deep concerns. Scripture calls us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things.
This begs the question: what is above?
Heaven. God’s full presence. His power. His throne room where He hears our prayers. The Father’s house with many rooms, which He is preparing for us right now. A place of healing. A place without tears. A place of wonder and worship. Forever love. Forever belonging.
We don’t even need to answer the second implied question (what are earthly things?). We are keenly aware of our troubles and sorrow, the brokenness that surrounds us. God isn’t calling us to ignore these things or pretend they aren’t real or don’t have an immediate impact on our lives. Rather, He is inviting us to set our minds — fix our thoughts, determine our focus — on Him, despite what’s happening here on earth. Because He is where our hope and joy are.

Middle School “Cereal Bowl”

Cereal Bowl Twelve kids brought their spoons for some CEREAL-ously good times last Friday night. From 5-9pm we hosted a night of cereal games, breakfast, and some sheer chaos. It was enveloped by some devotions reflecting on how God meets us in our highs and lows, feeds us, gives us rest, and then sends us back out. Tony the Tiger even agreed, it was “Greeeeeeeeeeeat!”

PRAYER WALL

As we continue our theme of prayer at Timothy, we have an opportunity over the next two months to allow our students and teachers at Timothy Lutheran School to pray for us!

Check out the Prayer Wall in the lobby at each campus, grab a colorful piece of paper near the Prayer Wall, and write a prayer request that our kids can be in prayer with you. Then roll it up and place on the Prayer Wall. Pastor Ryan will distribute them to classrooms so can pray without ceasing together!

DRUMM FARM CENTER FOR CHILDREN

TIMOTHY LADIES AND FRIENDS: Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 4th, at 9 AM.  LWML invites you to the Fellowship Hall for brunch, program and short meeting.  Adam Wright from DRUMM FARM CENTER FOR CHILDREN in Independence will inform us about the programs that are offered and answer general questions about Drumm Farm.  Monetary gifts for Drumm Farm or gift cards for the youth from Quick Trip, Walmart, or fast food are welcomed.  No reservations required for a pleasant morning with many ladies from Timothy.  You don’t have to belong to LWML to attend.  For more info, call Susan Ready, 816-229-7688.

Next Generation Moving Forward
Following the Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting on Dec 4, 2022, the Executive Board continues to prepare to move to one campus. A Special Voters’ meeting is set for Sunday, March 26, at 11:30 am in the Wyatt Auditorium. As announced in the Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting, the agenda includes the following topics:

Approval to place RD Mize Campus on the market
Approval for Executive Board authority to determine fair market value for Highway 7 frontage property and authority to accept such an offer that equals or exceeds fair market value
Approval of financing options for Wyatt HVAC units, if necessary, if funds not received through donations

Congregational input about these topics is vital. Prior to the March 26^th meeting, the Executive Board encourages Timothy members to submit specific questions about any of the above topics for Timothy’s leadership (Executive Board, Board of Elected Elders, Pastors) to address prior to the meeting on March 26^th. Questions may be submitted at www.timothylutheran.com (click on Church, then Next Generation). Printed copies of the simple form may also be found at the Information Centers at both campuses and placed in the Suggestion Box. These may remain anonymous, if desired. Thank you!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Prayers of the Saints: Hannah’s Prayer”

There are many examples of prayer throughout the Bible. In the first prayer we will look at, Hannah gives thanks to God for the way that He helped her during a time of need. She sees this as something that God does and praises Him for the way He levels the playing field, bringing about justice for those who need it.

For His Faithful Love to Us Is Great: A Devotion

Praise the Lord, all nations!
Glorify him, all peoples!
For his faithful love to us is great;
the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Psalm 117
Hallelujah!

January is a natural time for making goals and embracing fresh starts. But it’s also the perfect season for praise! A time to intentionally remember who God is and what He has done in our lives.
No matter how your 2022 ended or whether you’re dreading or delighting in the start of 2023, we can all answer the psalmist’s call to praise the Lord, to glorify Him, to raise a hallelujah! Praise primes our hearts to see God’s love, to see His fingerprints of faithfulness all over our lives.
Sometimes God’s love is like a flashing neon sign we can’t miss: the declaration of “cancer free,” a check in the mail exactly when we need it, a reconciled relationship we had totally written off. And sometimes His faithfulness is truly like a fingerprint whose smudge we would likely miss if we aren’t trained to look for it: an encouraging text from a friend, a parking spot in the rain, leftovers so you don’t have to cook dinner, a bird’s morning song.
Whether we categorize God’s kindness and care toward as “big” or “small,” the truth is that His faithful love to us is GREAT! And it will never end.

National Lutherans Schools Week – We look forward to a “Celebrating Timothy Lutheran School” video in worship at Wyatt on Jan. 22 and at RD Mize on Jan 29^th. TLC students will sing in person in worship at RD Mize on Jan 22 and at Wyatt on Jan 29^th. National Lutheran Schools Week provides more than 1,800 preschools, elementary schools and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in schools of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. We thank God for the opportunity to provide excellent academic preparation for the children we serve. We are most grateful for the opportunity to share Jesus’ amazing love with children and their families.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“TRICK SHOT”

We normally don’t think of Jesus as an arrow, but that’s how Isaiah describes the Messiah in one of his servant songs. And this arrow is destined to do something amazing, not just for the people of Israel, but for all people on Earth.

May This Be a Year of Ripening: A Devotion

As a new year has begun, I’ve been reflecting on my younger self and all the unpleasant, imperfect versions of myself I used to be. I was very insecure and covered that by stating my opinion and thinking I was right or simply hiding from any confrontations. Through the years, I have learned to listen more, but those traits are still me.

I look at myself now, seeing how I have softened and grown through my life. This process reminds me of a persimmon. Persimmons need time for their hard flesh to become soft and sweet. Whether hanging on a tree or lying on the counter, the persimmon will only become enjoyable to the taste when it’s gone through the internal work of ripening, with the passing of time. So I’m seeing the year ahead as another twelve months of ripening.

We all need to embrace who we’ve been and to show ourselves the grace we now so generously extend to others. From that place of love, we can approach whatever this year holds for us with openness and gentleness, with no hurry or rush. We don’t have to aim for radical transformation or massive success or even making the most of every possible opportunity set before us. Instead, we want the maturity that comes with the slow, ripening of character and soul. We want wisdom and peace to mark our days.

I pray you know that, yes, He cares for where we’re headed this year, but He’s been patiently, lovingly tending to our growth all along. May this be a year of ripening.

I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

National Lutheran Schools Week at Timothy
“Making Disciples for Life” January 23-27, 2023

It’s almost time to celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week! This week provides our network of 1,800 LCMS pre-schools, elementary schools, and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in Lutheran schools.

We thank God for the opportunity to provide excellent academic preparation for the children we serve. We are most grateful for the opportunity to share Jesus’ amazing love with children and their families.

National Lutheran Schools Week gives us an opportunity to proclaim these great blessings within the communities we serve. Our schools are amazing incubators for faithful witness of God’s love for us through Christ by teachers and students alike.

This year’s theme, “Making Disciples for Life,” strongly aligns with the week’s associated scripture, Matthew 28:18-20, The Great Commission: And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. The week starts with K-8 students singing in worship at RD Mize on Jan. 22 and ends with them singing in worship at Wyatt on Jan. 29. During the school days, they will enjoy a Bible Bee on Jan. 26, Grandparents’/Special Person’s Day and Talent Show on Jan. 27. Chapel will occur daily, and students will enjoy Spirit Days each day as well.

Timothy received the following email last Friday from Pat Enomoto, Mission Board Chair at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in KC. Please know that the 40 gift cards donated for our Giving Tree ministry and Journey to the Manger were very much appreciated. You are transforming lives through Christ!
“I know that gift cards are not as much fun on your end as an Angel Tree, but, believe me, they were fun on this end! Another church brought in four gift cards that were different from yours, so we had to change our plan at the last minute. Our former pastor always held a “raffle” with a lot of items that had no real purpose for our attendees. When the four new cards came in that afternoon, I pulled out our roll of raffle tickets and used them. We mixed all gift cards together; there was no favoritism involved. I had people stop me and thank me for the blessing of the food cards. One lady said, “I had no food for tomorrow. This had to be God’s plan!” He does always have a plan. Sometimes we get in the way, but not this time! Blessings and thanks to all who provided the cards.

“The Gift of the Magi”

One of the things we associate with the Christmas story is the arrival of the wise men with their gifts. It may seem odd to bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh to a newborn, but each of those gifts point to who is receiving the gift and what He has come to do. And in the same way, we bring the gifts of our First Fruits to Christ because of who He is and what He has done for us.

How to Handle an Impossible Task: A Devotion

Sometimes, tasks seem impossible because they are overwhelmingly huge. But when it comes to simple tasks, those, too, can feel impossible. Even something as simple as hanging a picture or rearranging furniture can seem daunting. But with a friend’s help and perspective, those day-to-day decisions can feel less intimidating.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 says it this way: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” I’m sure my friend who helped me didn’t overthink our collaboration; she was just present . . . a friend willing to help.

Maybe you know someone who is struggling. Perhaps they need someone to say, “Hey, how can I help you out this week? Two provide perspective. Two makes the task that felt a little impossible work. Take part in important community work. Doing things together is exactly how God wired us to live.

The Gift of the Magi

THIS SUNDAY, Jan. 8^th, is Timothy’s observance of First Fruits Sunday. In the Old Testament, the practice of offering the first portion of a harvest (the first fruits) to God was a way of not only thanking Him for the blessings of that harvest but also a way of expressing trust that God would continue to provide for His people. That is why we offer our first fruits to God. It is a special offering above and beyond what we normally give.

For 2023, Timothy’s leadership set a First Fruits goal of $110,000.00. For each of the next three years, the first $12,000.00 of First Fruits contributions will be designated for expenses related to the 2025 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. The remaining contributions will fund Timothy’s other ministries as supported by operations.

Please prayerfully consider supporting Timothy’s First Fruits in 2023 as we continue to focus on transforming lives through Christ. Contributions may be placed in pew envelopes or regular envelopes clearly marked “2023 First Fruits” or offered online on Timothy’s website (www.timothylutheran.com) under the Give tab. War Room is a compelling faith drama filled with humor and heart that became a #1 movie in US theaters and received raving reviews from audiences of all ages. Tony and Elizabeth Jordan have it all—great jobs, beautiful daughter, and their dream house. But appearances can be deceiving. Their world is actually crumbling under the strain of a failing marriage. While Tony basks in his professional success, Elizabeth resigns herself to increasing bitterness. But their lives take an unexpected turn when Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara, and is challenged to establish a “war room” and a battle plan of prayer for her family. As Elizabeth tries to fight for her family, Tony’s hidden struggles come to light. Tony must decide if he will make amends with his family and prove Miss Clara’s wisdom that victories don’t come by accident.

Lent 2023

During the Lenten season this year, we will look at prayers Jesus prayed during Holy Week, see what we can learn from them, and how they can help us grow in our faith. Make plans to join us in worship on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, two services (4pm and 6:30pm) will occur at RD Mize with Holy Communion at both services. The succeeding Lenten services are Mar. 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29, with only one service each evening at 5:30pm, also at RD Mize.

We look forward to the annual LWML Ash Wednesday Ham Dinner in the Family Life Center, served between 5 and 7pm. Free-will donations are accepted, with proceeds designated for Missions (10%) and Timothy’s Church Worker Professional Development (90%).

Lenten Dinners are also available for the Wednesday services in March, if hosted by a Timothy ministry, also accepting free-will donations to support that ministry’s fundraiser. On March 1, the June 2023 Youth Mission Trip Ministry will provide a lasagna meal. On March 8, Timothy’s School Ministry will provide a pizza meal to support the TLS Scholarship Fund.

Pink Tie Sunday

You may remember years past when Timothy recognized Pink Tie Sunday to support infant loss. While Timothy is not focusing a service on this ministry this year, you may choose to wear pink this Sunday, Jan. 8, to remember those families who have lost little ones. Below is an excerpt from a reflection written by Pastor Will Hanke, son of Pastor Rod and Miriam Lindemann. Will and Mindy Hanke created Pink Tie Sunday, as an extension of Sanctity of Life Sunday, to honor their daughter Maddy who went to heaven eight years ago.
“Pink Tie Sunday was created by Maddy’s Pa. Mindy sent Pa out to look for the perfect pink dress for Maddy’s funeral. I could only imagine the pain my parents felt searching through stores to buy a dress to bury their granddaughter. Like us, their pain turned into mission as Pa came back to church the next Sunday to preach and baptize one granddaughter while mourning another. That special day—Pink Tie Sunday—was born. It gave voice to a suffering group of people, and thus a new mission to never forget those we have lost who are home with Jesus.
At times, this Sunday can feel selfish since it is my story, yet everyone who faces loss continues to grieve even when the world moves on. This Sunday we stop and grieve together and wear pink to celebrate life and those children who will never get to tell their stories. We remember that Jesus died so that loss is not the end. We remember that Jesus died so that loss is not the end. We remember that we have Hope, which is the certainty that those who believe in Jesus will be with Him forever. Our family waits on the day we will be with Maddy, but until them we wear pink to give Hope to the hopeless!”

“Who Are You”

One of the most fundamental questions that a person has to answer for himself or herself is whom he or she is. How do you identify yourself, and how do you define that identity? Jesus became one of us so that we would have a solid identity that is grounded in Him.

In Our Lack, He Draws Closer: A Devotion

We got roller skates, for Christmas, for three of our grandchildren. Yes, they tested them out on their hardwood floors. And, yes, there were falls and tears. I watch, as my daughter goes to her children, scoops them into her arms. She draws near to them, as close as she can possibly get. She can never get too close. Her love for them is never too much.

God does the same with us. Like a mother hearing the cry of her child, God came ever close. God—who formed the stars with His hands and sprinkled galaxies we’ll never even know about—allowed His body to grow within the body of a teenage girl, the closest fathomable human condition, bodies tangled and intertwined together.

God drew near, as close as anyone could possibly get. He came to all who lacked. Jesus often seemed to surround Himself with poor and unspectacular people. A teenage girl. A step-dad who wanted to choose divorce. A group of shepherds whose names we never even learn. Their lack was never something to keep Jesus at bay. He can never get too close. His love is never too much.

There is no such thing as too much love, only a lack of it. But here’s the thing: Jesus lacks nothing. And with Him dwelling within us, we don’t lack anything either. When we come to Him with nothing but empty hands and a worn-out heart, He takes our lack and gives us something in return: far more love than we could ever fathom. He pours out His love, lavishing it. In our lack, He comes closer and closer still.

Dear partners in the Coming of His Kingdom among the Chinese,

I praise God for you! I pray you are filled with joy as you celebrate the advent of Salvation in the birth of Jesus. I pray you are filled with hope in the anticipation of His return in glory to take us Home with Him.

The Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary (LUMAA) will meet on Wed., Jan. 18, at Ascension Lutheran, 4900 Blue Ridge Blvd., KCMO. Registration begins at 9am with the opening service at 9:30am. The speaker will be the Executive Director for Cornerstones of Care. The ladies will also fill duffle bags for children entering foster care.

The Mission of the Month collection is non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the food pantries. Lunch will be served. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Christmas Angels”

One of the things that people associate with Christmas are angels, whether it’s the angels who spoke to Mary and Joseph or the angelic host who sang about Christ’s birth. But the reading from Hebrews points us beyond those messengers to the Message itself: Christ, the living Word, becoming one of us in the flesh.

The Birth of Our Savior: A Meditation

On this last week of Advent, I invite you to take a journey with storyteller Sherri Gragg as she leads us in a meditation of what Christ’s birth might have been like. I pray that your heart will be led to celebrate and worship our humble, miraculous Savior!

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed h8im in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. Luke 2: 6-7 (NIV)

Mary couldn’t sit still. With great effort, she rose from the low stool in the courtyard where she and the other women were preparing the evening meal. She placed one hand on her lower back and began to pace back and forth. She felt restless, uneasy.

A moment later, Mary gasped as the dull ache in her lower abdomen suddenly intensified. “It’s time,” she said. Joseph leapt to his feet, his face white with alarm. His uncle chuckled, patted him on the shoulder, and sent him off to get the town midwife.

Quickly, the animals were evicted from the stables beneath the main living area. By the time the midwife arrived, Mary was leaning against the cool stone wall of the stables as she waited for the next contraction to pass.

Hours later, in the dark early hours of the morning, Mary gasped for air and cried out in pain from the birthing stool. The next contraction tore through Mary’s body only seconds after the last one subsided. Then, with a cry of agony, she bore down with all of her remaining strength. The pain faded as her baby’s first cry pierced the night. “You have a son!” the midwife announced. Upstairs, Joseph’s ecstatic shout was joined by the joyful celebration of his uncles and cousins.

In the stables below, the midwife tenderly placed the crying baby on His young mother’s chest. Tears flowed down Mary’s face as she bent to kiss her son’s forehead for the first time.

Joseph peeked around the corner of the stables. “Come,” she said. “Come meet your son.” Joseph rushed to Mary’s side and knelt down to wrap an arm around her. Gently, he placed a calloused hand on the baby’s head as he blinked back tears of joy. “Yeshua,” Mary said, as she gazed tenderly into the eyes of her son, now quiet and alert. “Yeshua . . . “

Journey to the Manger Serves Many

Thank you, Timothy, for your generous outpouring of love shared with area families blessed by our Journey to the Manger ministry.

You provided 11 families with a variety of specific requested gifts and gift cards. An additional 50 gift bags and 27 gift cards of $25 each for groceries and gasoline were delivered to Community Services League and other community families. In addition, 45 families received a gift card for a hot meal. Twenty-five scarves, 5 pr of gloves and hats provided needed warmth to worshipers at Our Redeemer in KC.

Since November 1^st, $4,030.00 in donations have been received for Missions, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Timothy’s Emergency Fund. The Christmas Eve offerings will be designated for Timothy’s Ray of Hope fund, a special fund for Timothy members in need.

Timothy’s Kids Share Christmas Joy

On Sunday, December 11^th, at the Wyatt worship service, students from FaithRoots and CrossWalk took the stage to sing “Away in a Manger” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain” before leading the congregation in singing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. It also was a moment to acknowledge all th time and energy our FaithRoots and CrossWalk teachers offer to serve our kids. We love our Timothy family as we serve, sing, and celebrate this season together.

On Monday, December 12^th and Wednesday, December 14^th, the Wyatt Auditorium was packed with family, friends, church members, and neighbors to take in the sights and sounds of our TLS programs. On Monday, the school band performed an arrangement of songs, followed by pre-schoolers and kindergartners singing a variety of Christmas songs and sharing a special Christmas poem pointing us toward to the light of Christ. On Wednesday, first through eighth graders dressed as angels, wise men, shepherds, animals, and the Holy Family, leading us on a journey to knowing Jesus more through sharing Bible prophecies, songs, and the many names of Jesus found in the Scriptures. Both programs shared a simple but important message of light and hope found in the person of Christ! It was another great week of preparing our hearts to celebrate ALL that God has done.

Last Sunday, worshipers enjoyed a special performance of Timothy’s choirs as the RD Mize Sanctuary Choir and the Wyatt Celebration Chorus combined voices to share the cantata, There’s a Song in the Air. Timothy Blesses Its Hillcrest Resident

Timothy’s current Hillcrest resident, Dominia, appreciates Timothy’s ongoing support, with a special thanks for Christmas gifts provided by the Hillcrest Team, GIVE Commission, and other members (see photo). She reports that she can now visit with her children more which is a huge motivator to persevere in the Hillcrest program. She appreciates the prayers from Timothy which help her through this journey. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Your kindness really transforms lives through Christ.

The Gift of the Magi

On Sunday, January 8^th, Timothy will once again observe First Fruits Sunday. In the Old Testament, the practice of offering the first portion of a harvest (the first fruits) to God was a way of not only thanking Him for the blessings of that harvest but also a way of expressing trust that God would continue to provide for His people. That is why we offer our first fruits to God. It is a special offering above and beyond what we normally give.

In 2023, Timothy’s leadership set a First Fruits goal of $110,000. For each of the next three years, the first $12,000 of First Fruits contributions will be designated for expenses related to Timothy’s youth attending the 2025 National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. The remaining contributions will fund
Timothy’s other ministries as supported by operations.

Timothy Always Generously Supports Food Donations

Food pantries need restocking after holiday meals fed so many. Blue Springs Community Services League served several hundred local families this past week. Hamburger Helper, spaghetti & sauce, canned meats, and boxed potatoes are especially needed now and can be placed in the grocery cart located in the lobby at each campus. Thank you for donated groceries this past year!

Movie Night at Timothy

Make plans to attend a free movie night to watch War Room in the Wyatt Auditorium on Friday, Jan. 27^th, at 7pm. The GIVE Commission is sponsoring this opportunity to continue the church-wide prayer emphasis. Free popcorn and bottled water will be available. No need to RSVP, just show up to watch a powerful movie. Bring friends! Call church office is you need childcare.

What would you do if God offered you a sign, a guarantee that what He had promised would absolutely come to pass? He did that once for a king named Ahaz, and Ahaz turned Him down! While we may be shocked, we would be tempted to do the same thing if God were to offer. But thankfully, God gives us the sign of His Son, Jesus, to call us back to faithfulness in Him.

Finding Joy When the World Is a Dumpster Fire: A Devotion

You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures. Psalm 16:11

Did you know the phrase “dumpster fire” is in the dictionary? Lately, I’ve been trying to avoid the saying. While it remains true—sometimes devastatingly so—that this world offers us constant chaos and catastrophe, that isn’t the only truth I know and believe. And it isn’t the reality I want to focus on.

When we throw up our hands and declare a situation, a season, an entire calendar year to be a complete loss (i.e., a dumpster fire), we’re choosing to abandon hope and walk away from the joy God is placing before us. I’m determined to choose joy.

Finding joy when everything is falling apart feels impossible, but nothing is impossible for our God. We can ask Him to be with us and to bring us joy, and He will do it.

Middle School Youth Celebrate Christmas

Christmas Chaos went down last Saturday, December 10^th, in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. Fifteen middle schoolers gathered to make gingerbread houses, have an indoor snowball fight, and chat about Jesus being the light into our darkness. It was a great night as we get closer to Christmas.

The Gift of the Magi

In 2023, Timothy’s leadership set a First Fruits goal of $110,000. MOScholars: A Unique Opportunity

Taxpayers to the state of Missouri—both individuals and businesses—now have the unique opportunity to direct up to 50% of their state taxes to Lutheran Education. This summer, the Missouri State Treasurer’s Office launched a new tax program called MOScholars. The program allows organizations like the Missouri District to convert these tax dollars into scholarships for qualifying students attending LCMO schools throughout the state.

Different than a charitable donation, taxpayers participating in MOScholars are simply agreeing to prepay a portion of their state taxes so that funds may be used for Lutheran education. Reserving these tax credits is easy and can be completed online in a matter of minutes. The Missouri District website contains even more information on MOScholars, as well as the links to get the process started. The deadline for helping these students this school year is December 31, making now the time for taxpayers to participate in MOScholars.

Calling All Ladies: A Night of Laughter

All women are invited to join in fellowship on Thursday, Jan. 12, beginning at 6pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize, by the Women of Timothy Bible Study. A light meal will be available, followed by a DVD of comedienne Chonda Ruth Pierce, often billed as “the Queen of Clean.” The evening will conclude with some intentional discussion. Feel free to invite everyone for this fun night. Childcare available upon request. Volunteer Opportunity Are you as an individual or as a family looking for a volunteer opportunity at Timothy in the new year? The Sunday Morning Donut Ministry at RD Mize needs someone once a month. Responsibilities are picking up donuts at HyVee, setting up coffee no later than 8:15am, and cleaning afterwards. The normal time frame commitment is 7:45-11am. LWML Nuts & Candy Sale Thank you, Timothy, for your support of this annual fundraiser. This year’s proceeds total $1,118.18 and will be disbursed as 10% to missions ($118.18), 45% to Timothy’s Youth Mission Trip next summer ($531.82), and 45% to Immanuel Lutheran (KC) Food Pantry ($531.82). Thanks to Timothy’s LWML for offering and implementing this opportunity each year.
