As We Gather for Worship This Weekend

“The Church Is Holy”

“Holy” that sounds like such a pious, pure, and fancy church word.  But it also seems like something that is unattainable.  However, as we continue our series “We Are Church” we are reminded today by the apostle Peter that we are in fact to be holy.  But how is that possible when we are such a mess? Join us as we dive into God’s Word and flesh this out.

Devotion: “Don’t Leave Before the Miracle“

There are times I like to mindlessly watch TV movies. The other day I was watching one where the lead character was stuck in a time loop, a woman living the same day seven times. The man she’s fallen in love with gets his feelings hurt and storms out of the house. Or he tries to. As he’s trying to leave, his best friend attempts to convince him to stay and says, “Don’t leave before the miracle.”
There are times we may feel a bit like we are stuck in a time loop. Day after day, we wake up and go about our business only to be smacked in the face by some kind of difficulty. We need to remind ourselves, “Don’t leave before the miracle.” The words of Isaiah can sustain us through those difficult times. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
The miracle is coming! Sometimes the miracle looks like a literal rescue with a change in circumstances. Sometimes the miracle is a friend to walk with you, and sometimes the miracle is simply knowing that the Lord is with you. He is the miracle, and He is here. Don’t leave before receiving the Miracle.

Thanking Pastor John for His Service to Timothy

The congregation is invited to visit with Pastor John and Jill on Sunday, Feb. 11, in the 4 G’s area during the morning as he is available. Feel free to enjoy cookies & donuts in the lobby and place cards, notes, and gifts in baskets on a nearby table. We thank God for Pastor John’s service as one of Timothy’s associate pastors from 2016 – 2024 and pray for continued blessings for him and his family!

Meet Timothy’s New Business Manager

Timothy is pleased to announce that Mary Taggart will join Timothy’s staff as the new full-time business manager on Feb. 12. A seasoned professional with a 22-year career in the corporate world, Mary has navigated the intricacies of the business landscape, accumulating a wealth of experience and expertise along the way.

Outside the workplace, Mary is a dedicated spouse to husband Josh and a loving mother to two vibrant boys, Eli and Nathan. The family shares a passion for exploration, having embarked on journeys that have taken them nearly half of the US. Their preferred mode of travel is the RV, allowing them to blend adventure with the comforts of home on the road.

In addition to her family and career, Mary is an active member of Timothy, where she has dedicated over a decade to fostering spiritual growth and community. Her involvement spans various roles, including contributions to the GATHER Commission, Vacation Bible School board, and Women of Thursday Bible Study.

Mary is not only a professional achiever but also a testament to the importance of balance, blending a successful career with a rich family life and a deep commitment to her faith and community. Welcome aboard, Mary!

Early Communion Class

Maybe the time is right for your 5th-8th grader to receive the Lord’s Supper.  If that is stirring in their heart, we encourage you to join us for Early Communion Class. This 4-week class, starting Sunday, Feb. 18, at 4pm in the Music Room, preps our young people to receive this beautiful gift. One parent/guardian/mentor is expected to attend with the kiddo. Please contact Pastor Ryan with questions.

LWML Winter Society Meeting

All women and friends are invited to Timothy’s LWML Winter Society Meeting tomorrow, Sat., Feb. 3, from 9-11am in the 4 G’s and Auditorium. Continental breakfast (coffeecake, sweet breads, and muffins) will be provided by Ruth Circle sisters. The guest speaker will be Jason Alvis, CEO of ReHope, which is a faith-based charity providing housing, treatment, and lifelong sustainment services for women and children victims of human trafficking. Gifts from the Heart will be monetary donations for ReHope. A short meeting will also occur. See you then!

Dining with Jesus During Lent

As our Lenten journey begins on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14 at 6pm), we invite you to join us around the table each and every Wednesday and through Holy Week to worship, fellowship, and catch a snippet of what Jesus has for us. Why around the table? Because that’s where Jesus often did His most important ministry. As a matter of fact, throughout Scriptures, we see meals being a beautiful place where God does some amazing stuff. So we are going to dive into the Gospel of Luke where we will find Jesus not only sitting with those who loved Him but also with those who hated Him. We will hear some powerful red letter words, and we will wrestle with what it means to be sustained by God’s Word. This series will carry us through Lent, Holy Week, and conclude on Resurrection Sunday. Meals WILL be served on the Wednesdays of Feb. 21 through Mar. 20. Join us as we dine with Jesus. The interactive service following the meal will conclude approximately 7pm.

To date, the information concerning the meals includes the following with more to share soon:

  • Feb. 21, 6-6:30pm:  Provided by LWML (menu: chicken tenders; potato casserole, jell-o salad, cookies and brownies ); free-will offering to support mites (10%) and Hillcrest (90%), and LWML will match total free-will offering). .
  • Feb. 28, 6-6:30pm:  Provided by Women of Thursday Bible Study (menu TBD); free-will offering to support Timothy’s operating fund
  • Mar. 6, 6-6:30pm:  Provided by TLS (menu TBD); free-will offering to support TLS Scholarship Fund
  • Mar. 13, 6-6:30pm:  Hosting ministry TBD
  • Mar. 20, 6-6:30pm: Provided by TLS 7th & 8th (tacos); free-will offering to support 2024 spring class trip

Any Timothy ministry interested in hosting the meal on Mar. 13 is urged to contact Diane Mayfield soon (816.228.5300 Ext. 8040).

FaithRoots 10:30 service teachers NEEDED:

As the adjustments continue in our new configuration, there is also a new need.  We do not have enough teachers for FaithRoots at our 10:30am service!  Do you enjoy children?  Would you be willing to teach just one Sunday a month?  Materials are ready each week for approximately  10 kiddos  and 2 teachers.  Would you prayerfully consider volunteering for this important ministry?  We will train and support you along the way.  If interested contact, Pastor Ryan soon.

Upcoming Sermon Series

It seems like every time we blink, something is changing at Timothy lately. Not only that, but there is a lot of hurt, loss, concern, and grief stirring within many of us. And we are left in a heap of confusion. Let’s be honest—there are those who are disgruntled, those who are saddened, those who have stopped supporting ministry at Timothy, and those who are thinking about leaving. So what do men and women of faith do? We turn towards the God who loves and cares for us. We turn toward the one who promises renewal and restoration. That’s what we will do together on Sundays in worship between February 18th through March 24th. We will tune into the books of Ezra and Nehemiah to be reminded that we worship a God who restores His people in the midst of their confusion, chaos, and grief. We will also ask the Lord to restore us: restore our hope, restore our focus, restore maybe even our faith. We invite you to join us and even come prepared! Here’s a suggested reading plan for our season of Lent:

  • Prior to February 18:       Ezra Chapter 1
  • Prior to February 25:       Ezra Chapter 3
  • Prior to March 3:              Nehemiah Chapters 1&2
  • Prior to March 10:            Ezra 4:21-5:2 & Nehemiah 4:10-15, 5:1-12, & Nehemiah 6:10-14
  • Prior to March 17:            Nehemiah 8:9-18
  • Prior to March 24:           Nehemiah Chapter 10

 Singing Saints

Singing Saints, a nationally acclaimed choir from Saint Paul Lutheran High School, will sing during both worship services on February 11th. It is a great opportunity to enjoy amazing music and see how God is leading the young people of our Lutheran faith. Please come, invite your friends, bring your neighbors, and appreciate God’s gifts to these young people.

 Annual TLS Auction

TLS invites the congregation to attend the Annual TLS Auction for an evening of fun and entertainment on Sat., Feb. 24, from 6-10pm at the Adams Pointe Conference Center! All proceeds benefit the TLS Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $50 per person and include access to the live and silent auction, dinner, dessert, non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and wine.

The 2023 auction raised more than $140,000 to bless TLS families with scholarship support. This major fundraiser goes a long way to enable every child who wants to attend TLS the assistance to do so. With the congregation’s support, even more assistance for TLS families can be available in 2024.

Scan the QR code on the image or visit https://event.auctria.com/983406c2-5d74-4720-b5e0-23a3f4321da4/ to purchase tickets. Don’t delay! Contact Clancy Heisel (816.830.1582) with questions.

 Hillcrest Graduation

On Tuesday, January 23, the Hillcrest Transitional Housing graduation ceremony included Cordell, Timothy’s most recent resident in its apartment at Hillcrest. Dan & Pam Sbisa and
Care Coordinator Sandy Gregory were pleased to attend in support of Cordell, who has moved to his own apartment and now works in the IT field. We pray God’s blessings to Cordell as he continues to grow in his faith and navigate independent living. Timothy looks forward to learning about our next apartment resident as that develops. Please keep this ministry in your prayers.

National Youth Gathering 2025

Plan to attend a short informational meeting on March 10 at 11:45am in the Music Room to learn basic information and ask questions. If you have ANY interest in attending the NYG, you need to attend this meeting or send a representative. Contact Pastor Ryan with questions.

 Consolidation & Other Updates

Timothy’s ministries meeting at Pointe of Hope continues to be a blessing, and Timothy thanks our friends there for their generosity and cooperation in this partnership. Recently, an additional opportunity for partnership at Pointe of Hope occurred for the Festival Committee freezer truck to stay in their storage area until Timothy’s storage building is completed. We also appreciate Bill & Carol Ready’s offer of storage for this purpose on out-of-town property, if needed.

Beginning this Sunday, a moveable coat rack will be placed along the west wall in the lobby for worshipers’ convenience.

Worshipers are reminded to reserve the handicapped parking spaces and at least the first row of regular spaces along both the south and west sides of church for those with mobility concerns. Thank you!

Timothy received the following thank-you note from Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Lee’s Summit this week:
“Dear friends at Timothy Lutheran, Thank you for your tremendous act of generosity by donating your organ to us at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend

“The Church Gives – FIRST FRUITS”

One of the hallmarks of the Early Church was its generosity. Right from the beginning, the earliest Christians did everything they could to generously and joyfully give, knowing that they could put the many blessings that God had loaned to them to work for the Kingdom. So, too, we, the modern Church, put what He has loaned to us at work, storing up treasures for ourselves in heaven, motivated by God’s incredible love for us and for all people.

Devotion: “A Clean Sweep“

As I sit looking out across a frozen, silent street, I think of the James Taylor song, “In a Bleak Midwinter.” It’s a Christmas song, but I can’t help thinking about it on this icy Monday.
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
We read in Scripture that with a bite, darkness fell. Eden was lost forever, and the world became bleak. Sometimes when we stumble on a horrifying news story, hear of another shooting, or think about the wars happening right now across the globe, we can be overcome in a way that feels like Eden’s fall. We may want to crawl into bed and hide under the blankets, blocking it all out. But even then, we couldn’t block it out of our hearts, and I don’t think Jesus was ever able to either.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 2 Tim. 4:18
It’s love that pushes us through the bleakness of the midwinter seasons. If we look closely, we can see Christ’s beautiful face around every snowy corner, each bare tree, and even in the brown blades of grass peeking through the ice covering our bleak midwinter land. May we give Him our hearts. May He come and reign forever.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend

“The Church Is Bold”

In the past we know that the Church was the center of our culture in the United States. It was the place people went to hang out, and it was often consulted when our nation was making decisions. But this time is different, isn’t it? We are silenced, threatened, and accused of being judgmental. Our society doesn’t care what we think or what we know, but Jesus calls us to go and make disciples anyway. And even in the face of pushback, the message of the cross has boldly continued. So how do we, the Church, continue to live out our faith boldly, despite all the changes?

Devotion: “A Clean Sweep“

During the big, heavy, wet snow we got a couple of weeks ago, I heard the sound of a roaring engine outside my window. My neighbor was clearing my driveway with his snow blower. It might have been a man playing with a toy he doesn’t often get  to use, but to me it was a wonderful sound. Random acts of kindness are unexpected, and people like my neighbor inspire me to “go and do likewise.”
If you’re anything like me, the new year already has you thinking about resolutions, goals, or one word that will be your guiding principle for the months to come. What if we devoted our minds and hearts to knowing and loving God this year? 1 John 4:9-11 speaks to this –
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
Knowing and loving God go hand in hand; the better we know God, the greater our capacity to love Him. And it shows. What better way to begin a year than by investing in the most important relationship in our lives.

2024 LENT

Make plans to participate in Timothy’s Lenten season observances this year. On Ash Wednesday, February 14th, a traditional setting with Holy Communion and Imposition of Ashes will start at 6pm in the Auditorium. There will be no Ash Wednesday meal this year. The Maundy Thursday service on March 28th (traditional setting with Holy Communion) will start at 6pm, and the Good Friday service on March 29th (contemporary setting, no communion) will start at 6pm. Services on Easter Sunday, March 31st, will be 9am (contemporary setting; no communion) and 10:30am (traditional setting; no communion).

The Wednesday Lenten opportunities will revolve around the theme “Dining with Jesus.” From 6-6:30pm each Wednesday (Feb. 21 through Mar. 20), a meal will be available for families in the Auditorium. At 6:30, the pastors will lead an interactive service based on various meals in the Bible where Jesus led or was part of a meal. Timothy’s LWML will offer a meal on Feb. 21, menu to be determined.
LWML will allocate donations from the free-will offering as to 10% for mites, 45% for Hillcrest, and 45% TBD. For the other four Wednesdays (Feb. 28, Mar. 6, Mar. 13, Mar. 20), ministry groups are invited to “sponsor” a meal, the free-will offering allocated to a ministry of their choice or the general operating fund. Leaders from interested ministries should contact Diane Mayfield (816.228.5300 Ext. 8040) as soon as possible to sign up for your preferred date. The free-will offering for all the meals will be the only offering collected on Wednesdays during Lent; there will be no offering during the interactive service.

Be sure to mark your calendars to take in this creative approach to Lenten worship services!

Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting Update

The Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting was held last Sunday, with 70 voting members present. Timothy’s leadership appreciates those who could attend and understands that many interested voters were not in attendance due to the frigid weather conditions. Having already postponed this meeting twice, it was important to conduct this meeting as soon as possible. The recording of the meeting can be accessed here  “VOTERS MEETING” or on Timothy’s website  on the Home page.

The Voters approved the proposed slate of lay leaders, LCMS-rostered call to TLS Principal Ken Holland,  and the 2024 proposed budget (found on church website under Church link). Copies of the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan pamphlet were available but will also be worship bulletin inserts. Consolidation and Next Generation updates were also provided.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend

“The Church Endures”

The Church has always faced persecution, conflict, and trauma from both inside and from outside its walls. Under the pressures and temptations of the world and the devil, some parts of the Church have had great loss and even crumbled. Peter, however, encourages us today and reminds us that the Church can and will endure.   But we’ve got to set our eyes and ears on the right focus. So are we there?

Devotion: “Take Heart, We’re in This Together“

None of us are immune to the burdens and pains of this life. Though we have a God who loves us, we all experience loss, hardship, and disappointment. I entered this Sunday’s worship with great trepidation. But I found in the midst of it all, I was not alone. My faith family arrived and filled the chairs at our church. We sang, communed and I felt the Spirit bring us together as one Church.
In our most vulnerable moments, it’s great to have friends. Friends to share experiences and worship together assuring us all will be well. It is not over. Hard things will continue to happen in this world or in our lives, and that is okay. Because our suffering and pain connect us together in our humanity, but they also connect us to Christ, who bore it all on the cross. He held the tension between heaven’s holiness and the world’s brokenness, and though we all long for resurrection, we have a God who stayed in the tomb — in darkness, in death, in time suspended — before He rose again on the third day.
And these are His words to us: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Timothy Celebrates Worship at One Campus Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow January 7, 2024

WE ARE CHURCH! Two services under one roof again! We praise God for the enthusiasm and energy evident at church this past Sunday. All morning long, worshipers exchanged greetings with familiar faces as well as with some whom they haven’t seen in a while. Pastor Rod delivered a powerful message for unity to 223 worshipers in the contemporary service and 205 in the traditional service. Holy Communion was celebrated in both. The Adult Bible Class met in the Library near the 4G’s area, and FaithRoots started in the Music Room and moved to TLS classrooms for breakout sessions. Please join your brothers and sisters in Christ this Sunday as the WE ARE CHURCH sermon series continues.

Early Communion Class

Maybe the time is right for your 5th-8th grader to receive the Lord’s Supper.  If that is stirring in their heart, we encourage you to join us for Early Communion Class. Consolidation Update

Congregational President Diane Mayfield and Congregational Secretary Charlie Johnson signed the closing documents to sell the RD Mize Campus to Harvest Baptist Church yesterday afternoon, January 11, 2024, at 1pm, at a price of $3.25M. Funds will be wired to Lutheran Church Extension Fund ($2.25M to reduce debt) and to Timothy’s Commerce Bank account ($994,317.00) until Executive Board determines allocation of those proceeds. Timothy’s closing fees totaled $5,683.00.

The organ at RD Mize has a new home! On January 6th, it was moved to Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Lee’s Summit, with organist Mary Burge sharing a beautiful sound through it for worship the next morning. The keyboard formerly sitting next to the baby grand piano in the sanctuary also has a new home at a Timothy member’s house.

Members are reminded again to mail all correspondence to Timothy to 301 E. Wyatt Rd., Blue Springs, MO 64014-5801. It is unknown how long USPS will forward mail from the 425 NW RD Mize Rd address.
Thank you very much!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“The Church Is One”

Modern individualism and consumerism tells us that we should be all about ourselves. Seeking what we want, getting we want, and being whom we want. Yet our Creator God had a different plan for us. Instead of “me,” He teaches us that it is about “we.” Paul drives home this truth as he emphasizes “one” over and over in this text. So what does it mean for the church to be one, and how do we get there when the we really wants it to be all about me?

Timothy Celebrates RD Mize Campus, Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow

What a beautiful service, attended by 504 people, occurred on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 425 NW RD Mize Road for the final time before consolidating all Timothy ministries to one campus at 301 East Wyatt Road! God was glorified through inspiring Scripture readings and message; beautiful musical selections from hymns, choir, instrumental duets, handbells, organ and piano; and the redeeming sacrament of Holy Communion. Pastors John and Ryan were assisted by former Pastors Lieb and Steensma for the readings and distribution of Holy Communion. God’s presence was felt by all who attended! If you would like to view the service, click on this link:  https://youtu.be/y-aMfOWvXrU

Following the service, many people gathered in the Family Life Center for lunch and fellowship—another wonderful opportunity to reminisce and catch up with friends. Special thanks to Pastor Rod and Miriam Lindemann for preparing the meal and to several LWML members and the GATHER Commission for serving it. The entire day was celebratory and uplifting as we await God’s plan for the days ahead.

Timothy welcomed former DCE Tom & Pam Nummela, DCE Steve & Michelle Pickel, and the entire Steensma family for the celebration. In addition, prior to December 31, the Board of Elders received several notes from previous called staff or members of their family who could not attend, as follows:

  • “Thanks so much for working to include us in this event. God’s blessings on the celebration and on Timothy’s ministry moving forward. We have wonderful memories of the people there and hope that sometime in the not-too-distant future we can get to Blue Springs and see you all. Blessings and peace in Christ, John & Ruth Gerike” (younger son of William Gerike, Timothy’s first called pastor)
  • “Please know that you all will be in my thoughts and prayers as you have your final worship service in a space that meant so much to me and my family. We ask for God’s blessings for the whole congregation as you move forward in your mission in Blue Springs. Please give my warmest greetings to any who might still know me there. Paul & Mona Gerike” (older son of Timothy’s first called pastor)
  • “So good to hear from you! I guess it’s been a little over nine years. It’s great to hear that Timothy is celebrating what has happened over the past 60 years as well as looking forward to the future. Unfortunately, I have a conflict on the 31st and won’t be able to attend. Please give my regards to everyone there. Blessings to you as you serve our Lord and His people. Dave Frank” (former Executive Minister)
  • “Thank you for the invitation, Tary. Unfortunately, I am unable to participate as I will be in Iowa at that time. I am looking forward to having all Timothy members worshipping at one location. God’s blessings on the celebration. Nancy Nowiszewski” (former Care Minister)
  • “Thanks for reaching out—we moved to Vancouver, WA, about 7 years ago—so it’s a little out of our way. Hope the celebration goes well! Steve Jorgenson” (former DCE)

Devotion: “A Letter From God“

Getting Christmas cards is like you are standing at my house knocking at the door.  The images and words warm my spirit as I enjoy the pictures and letters from those I love that are far away.
And so, here I am — here you are. We are standing at the precipice of yet another new year. And already it is ripe with opportunity and adversity. For all that we carry and all that we’ve yet to come across, sometimes we need more than just one picture, one card — we need a whole letter… a whole Bible full of promises to help us get through the year ahead.
May this letter remind us of all that is beautiful and enduring and true.
My dear child,
I see you. (Psalm 33:13-15)
I see you as you were, as you are, and as you will be. (
Psalm 139:1-10)
Look to Me; turn to Me. I am Your help. I am the Maker of the heavens and the earth, and I am the Maker of all your moments. Look to Me, for I am the only One, in all the heavens and the earth, that can hold you and help you. (
Psalm 121:1-2)
I hear you. I hear you when you pray and I hear you when you are in pain. (
1 John 5:14, Psalm 118:5-6)
Do not look to yourself for answers, rather look to what you know is true of Me. (
Proverbs 3:5-6)
Trust in Me. (
Psalm 25:1-2) Delight yourself in Me. (Psalm 37:4)
Look to Me, and Me alone, for divine direction. (
Psalm 37:5)
I am He who leads you. (
Psalm 32:8)
I am He who loves you. (
Psalm 36:7)
My love is never far away.

Happy NEW Year!

WE ARE CHURCH:  January Sermon Series

Join your brothers and sisters in Christ this Sunday, January 7th, as the new worship schedule unfolds. Contemporary worship starts at 9am, and blended/traditional worship begins at 10:30am. Adult Bible Class, from 9-10am led by Fritz Barlag & Dale Russell, will meet in the Library, near the 4G’s. Donuts & coffee will be ready in the 4G’s by 8:30am and available until beginning of 10:30 service. If additional fellowship time is desired following the second service, volunteers to monitor and clean up are requested to contact GATHER Commission Leader Bob Logan (816.668.8139) or Diane Mayfield (816.228.5300 Ext. 8040). FaithRoots will occur during both services in the TLS classrooms. The nursery will be staffed during both services.

Please remember that worshipers may drive to the canopy area to unload passengers before parking in the lot. Leadership asks that physically able worshipers park in the middle to back of the lot to allow all handicapped and front-row spots for those with mobility challenges. If you are available to help worshipers enter the building or to serve as parking attendants, please contact Elder Director Tary Krahenbuhl (816.890.0941).

If you appreciate using a Bible or hymnal during worship, please feel free to take one from the cart close to the south entrance of the Auditorium. If you do not note your attendance online, please take an Attendance/Prayer Request card from an usher and drop in the offering plate during the service.

God’s blessings on your worship this Sunday and every Sunday!

JourneyMen Bible Class Settles into New Meeting Space

Bright and early at 6:30am on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the JourneyMen Men’s Bible Class welcomed the new year and new meeting space in the 4G’s, the first Timothy ministry group to switch locations. They noted that the smaller space seemed to draw them closer, sparking a lively discussion and more close-knit conversations. Pictured here are L to R:  Jake Davis, Mark Meyer, Bob Downs, Josh Taggart, Jim Williams, Fritz Barlag, & Brad Elledge. Not pictured is Charlie Johnson (photographer). They welcome additional guys to join them and plan to bring out another table next week for you! Contact Bob Downs (816.739.4472) with questions.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: Remember…“

Today is a hard day for so many of us.  We say goodbye to a facility that we have known for so long.  It’s a place we feel comfortable in; it’s a place that has meaning to us.   Change is a part of life which God’s people experienced in countless different ways throughout the Scriptures.  But with all the changes, God always calls His people to gaze back and “remember” all the blessings that He has given, and then He calls us to look forward to the blessings that He has promised ahead.

Devotion: “For When the Storm Just Won’t Let Up”

Panic hit like a freight train. I woke up realizing Christmas is over, and now is the big push to move from RD Mize to Wyatt. This year has been a tsunami, to put it mildly. Every time I think I see a break in the waves, the storm picks up, which would be laughable… if it weren’t so heartbreaking. I know it is God’s plan, but the work and the loss are real as we plan for the Worship of Remembrance this Sunday, December 31, at 10:00 am.

We, as a faith family, know this world is temporary. The dust will settle, the move will happen, and once again we can begin feeling content. Our hope doesn’t lie in the things of this world. One day, every storm will be permanently silenced. One day, chaos will be calmed for good. But for today: We don’t have to hold it together. There is One who is holding us, and He’s familiar with waves. Sometimes Jesus says, “Peace, be still” to the waters that rise, but sometimes, instead, He says those words to our overwhelmed hearts.

Celebration Service

Sunday, December 31:

  • Celebration Service, 10am with Holy Communion, RD Mize
  • Contemporary Service, 10am with Holy Communion, Wyatt

The Celebration Service at RD Mize on Sunday, December 31, at 10am will remember the many ways in which God has blessed Timothy at the RD Mize Campus and look forward to the many ways He will bless Timothy in moving forward at Wyatt as one campus. Former Pastors Lieb and Steensma will assist with Scripture readings and Holy Communion. Special music by choirs, handbells, solos & duets will enhance worship as well.

Following the service, the congregation is invited to a light lunch and additional time for fellowship in the Family Life Center.

Expected – Pink Tie Sunday

She was expected, but the plan changed. Now she is a memory. Our perfect little Maddy was expected, and now is a memory that we never want to forget. That is why you might see some pink ties on Sunday, December 31st. Pink ties, pink dresses, maybe even pink socks.

We celebrate PINK TIE SUNDAY the last Sunday of the year. It is a way to remember those little ones called to our heavenly home too soon. They were not with us long, but we longed for them, and on Pink Tie Sunday, we remember those little expectations that were with us for only a short time. Join Pink Tie Sunday if you have felt the loss of a little one through miscarriage, still birth or those who were with us for such a short time by wearing pink. Remembering those expected.

Thanks for joining us! -Pastor Rod and Miriam Lindeman

Generosity Through Charitable Giving

As the year winds down, are you trying to think creatively as a generous charitable donor to move Timothy ministries forward? If you own an IRA, do you still need to meet your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year? Are you considering a year-end contribution to Timothy or other qualified charity? If you do it the smart way, you will save tax dollars and benefit your church.

The IRS allows you to make contributions directly from your IRA to a charity, and that contribution is NOT income to you, if your trustee writes the check directly to the charity. Your trustee knows how to do it correctly—just ask—and get a real tax break. You can make all contributions this way and save even more next year. Thank you for keeping Timothy in your prayers and plans as you consider these tax-saving opportunities!

Consolidation Update

*** Volunteers to pack Bibles and hymnals from the sanctuary pew racks on Tuesday, January 2, would be appreciated. Please call church office if you can help. Thank you!

LERT Training

Have you ever desired to assist victims of national disasters, such as the recent tornadoes in Tennessee? Are you willing to go to such areas but feel ill-equipped? On Saturday, Jan. 27, St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Lee’s Summit will host a Disaster Response Training workshop from LERT (Lutheran Emergency Responsive Teams) from 9am-3pm. LERT teams respond to local and national disasters. Once training is completed, you’ll be FEMA-badged and certified to serve in any community hit by a disaster in the United States. Please understand that serving doesn’t mean you are necessarily relegated to manual labor. A portion of the training will identify other ways to serve on the teams. LERT also provides numerous opportunities to serve your neighborhood in need during non-disaster times as well, such a building wheelchair ramps, updating homes for more accessible bathrooms, and much more. If interested in learning more, please visit https://www.lcms-lert.org/need/detail/?need id=869609. Please register by January 10, 2024, if possible. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: Prepared“

There are so many preparations that go into Christmas.  But we seem to spend far more time preparing for the festivities than for the work of God. So on this Christmas Eve morning, we will spend some time preparing to celebrate the unexpected work of God at Christmas and beyond. Come and worship.

Devotion: “The Promise of Joy”

It’s Christmas! How is that strength holding out? With the challenges of balancing life, looking expectantly toward a time off, but having to prepare for that, too. Then the craziness of baking, wrapping, cleaning, planning… When I feel delirious from over commitment I think to myself, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10 ), and His Spirit reminds me of what I needed — joy and strength, in that order.

“The joy of the Lord is your strength” is written by a guy building a wall, doing backbreaking work to secure his people from the enemy. God’s truth revealed to the people their true selves and their sin, and that they couldn’t rely on themselves, but the grace of God was more than enough. That called for joy.

True joy can only come from the Lord. It’s of Him. In turn, we are strengthened. We can have joy because we have Jesus. Joy is a miracle. Only the Holy Spirit can create it. Let us not grow weary or lose heart. The joy of the Lord truly can give us the strength we need to continue no matter the situation, not only fueling us to continue but allowing us to receive the true joy, peace, and hope our souls so desperately long for. To God be the glory in the beauty and the suffering.

Hope to see you at worship;

MO Scholars Promotes Private Education

MO Scholars was established in 2021 by the Missouri General Assembly to provide educational opportunities and resources to Missouri students and families. The program provides options for eligible families to seek an array of alternative educational services ranging from private or Christian schools, like Timothy Lutheran School, to therapeutic services. The law provides state tax credits for contributions to approved, non-profit Educational Assistance Organizations, such as the LCMS MO District, to award scholarships to Missouri students with Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) and students living in low-income households. Parents are encouraged to contact TLS Administrator Ken Holland to learn more about this program.

How can every Timothy member participate in this program? If you pay Missouri income taxes, you are eligible to participate and help low-income parents send their children to TLS. Visit mo.lcms.org/mo-scholars and complete the prompts, selecting “The Missouri District” for the EAO.  Mail your confirmation page and check to Missouri District, 660 Mason Ridge Center Dr., Suite 100, St. Louis, MO 63141. Questions? Contact Leah at 314.590.6211 or leah.sieveking@mo.lcms.org. You must send in your contribution within 30 days of applying for Tax Credits. It will be a tax credit on your Missouri state income tax return. Feel free to also direct questions to TLS Administrator Ken Holland (816.228.5300 Ext. 8015), Stewardship Committee Member Mel Falk (816.686.6616) or TLS School Board President Christy Yager (816.820.4730).

Additional moving will occur during Christmas week (Dec. 26-29) for last-minute items. Leadership understands the timing of this is precarious with family celebrations and unknown weather conditions. If you can offer some hours anytime that week, please call the church office with your availability.

Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting

The congregation is urged to attend the Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at 11:45 am in the Auditorium. A minimum of 40 congregants is required to conduct business.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: The Coming Christ Calls Us to Follow“

As God’s amazing work of restoration begins with the coming of Christ, we also know it does not come to completion until He comes again. And there is a lot of work to be done.  So God calls and equips people to follow Him in this work.  We see this throughout the Christmas season as the Lord uses various people, including John, to “prepare the way.” So how is God calling each of us to follow not just during the holidays but daily?

Devotion: “Seeds at Christmas”

I have enjoyed spending time with a woman who has three small children. I remember those days in the middle of raising a house full of little ones and just trying to survive. Life felt chaotic, but I knew deep in my soul that there was nothing more valuable than knowing God myself and helping my kids to know who He really is and to connect to the heart of God — His character and His power in their lives.

God is working directly in our lives and in the lives of our families. This Christmas season as we spend time with the extended family God has given us, think about sharing our faith when the opportunity arises, no matter how ill prepared we feel. Scripture is full of beautiful examples of God calling and equipping flawed people, from Moses to David to the twelve disciples. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul writes, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

As we go throughout our holidays, remember: God calls us to plant and water the seeds of our family, but it is He and He alone who grows. So, take the pressure off yourself. God is doing a good work in your lives; just share it and He will use even our smallest seeds!

Christmas Eve Day Sunday service will be at 10am in sanctuary at RD Mize with Holy Communion. There is no service at Wyatt on Sunday morning, Dec. 24.

Christmas Day Worship, Monday, December 25:
RD Mize Road Campus – 10 am with Holy Communion

Celebration Service – REMEMBER

The congregation and friends are invited to a special Celebration Service at the RD Mize Campus on Sunday, December 31, at 10am (please note different worship time). As we move into 2024, Timothy will not only look back at the many blessings God has showered on our congregation at this campus in the past but also prayerfully look ahead in anticipation of His many blessings still to come in our next chapter as a church family.

The service will include Holy Communion as well as special musical selections performed by choirs, organ/piano duets, and flute solos. Pastors Lieb and Steensma will assist with scripture readings and Holy Communion.

Following the service, the congregation is invited to gather in the Family Life Center for a light lunch and additional time for fellowship.

Timothy’s contemporary service will occur at normal time (10am) at Wyatt on Dec. 31st. Holy Communion will be celebrated.

LWML Ruth Circle Celebrates Birth of Jesus

Timothy’s Ruth Circle gathered yesterday for its annual Christmas celebration, catered meal, and silent auction. Over $100 was donated for Community Services League, and over $600 was raised from the silent auction to benefit Timothy’s ministries, as determined in the new year.  Praise be to God for the opportunity to gather with Christian sisters in Christ!
Another Successful Journey to the Manger
Thanks, Timothy, for your generous support of the Giving Tree and Journey to the Manger ministry. Once again, as the photo shows, the wrapped gifts and various monetary donations are heart-warming and very much appreciated as we Join Jesus on His Mission to transform lives. Thank you!

Consolidation Update

Worshipers who mail correspondence or contributions to the RD Mize address should send to Wyatt address, effective January 1, 2024. That address is 301 E Wyatt Road, BSMO 64014. Please also contact any financial institutions asap who may regularly mail in your contributions. USPS will forward RD Mize – addressed mail to Wyatt address beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

Leadership is seeking help with flooring options for the Wyatt stage. There is also a need to store the Festival Committee freezer truck in covered storage until the new storage building is constructed. If you can help with either, please contact Louie Wilbers (816.988.6059).

Additional moving will occur during Christmas week (Dec. 26-29) for last-minute items. Leadership understands the timing of this is precarious with family celebrations and unknown weather conditions. If you can offer some hours anytime that week, please call the church office with your availability.

Please note that the Annual Voters’ Assembly Meeting will be Sunday, January 14, rather than the 7th. This will allow worshipers time to fellowship and take in some of the “newness” of two services under one roof again rather than gathering for a church business meeting.

WE ARE CHURCH – Volunteers Are Priceless!

The congregation is invited to again stop by the tables in either lobby this Sunday to visit with Elders about the transition to one campus. This is also another chance to learn more about volunteer opportunities to help with this transition. Have you ever thought about serving as an usher either as an individual or a family? Perhaps as a worship assistant on Sunday to serve alongside the pastor, or maybe a front-desk volunteer during the weekdays? You may go to Timothy’s app or website to click on Volunteer or click on this link.
The Elders have scheduled a training session for all current and new worship assistants and ushers wishing to serve in either service moving forward on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 6:30pm in the Auditorium. Attendance is strongly encouraged to learn procedures that will impact both services, such as distribution of Holy Communion, collecting offering & attendance cards, and welcoming people to worship.

Questions can be directed to Tom Keel (816.213.5665 or twk500@gmail.com).

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: Jesus Comes with Restoration“

Last week we saw the power and prestige of the coming Savior, but many were disappointed with the simplicity of this man named Jesus. He didn’t gather an army, nor did He always do what the people wanted Him to. No, Jesus came to do what His Father promised He would do and that is to restore and redeem all that had been lost because of sin. Today we see how Jesus perfectly fulfilled the promise God gave to His people long ago and why we rejoice that He comes to restore.

Devotion: “How to Hear Him Better This Advent”

In the cool, crisp evenings, when the house is quiet and dark, I sneak out on the deck to listen to the silence and see the Christmas lights of our neighborhood flash in the shadows. These are sacred moments. The light of my phone and the voices competing for my attention are traded for the yellow light of the moon and hushed stillness. I sigh in relief. I feel small, and I remember One who made Himself small. Jesus, who, “became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:14 ). I can hear Him better sitting in this stillness. I wait in anticipation.

This Advent season, we ask Him to come: Emmanuel, God with Us, come fill this season and our hearts. We sweep out the clutter — setting our phone’s notifications to “Off” and logging out of all those accounts that distract us for what is important. We want to hear Him so we can be like Him.

Less of us and more of Him. Less looking at our phones and more looking at our family’s eyes. Less “what we want” and more “how can we serve?”

It all begins in the stillness. “He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Phil. 2:7

As follow-up to the Town Hall last Sunday, please note that Timothy’s elected elders will be in the lobby at each campus this Sunday, Dec. 10, to answer additional questions from the congregation.

The following questions were submitted this week:

1.  Will the nursery at Wyatt be staffed for both services now?
Response:  Yes.

2.  Pastor John stated at the end of the Town Hall Meeting that everything possible was being done to enhance the upcoming traditional service at Wyatt. The organ has been the standard musical instrument for this service, and the sound cannot be duplicated with the current set-up at Wyatt. Many of us value the organ sound as well as the support for congregational singing. Also, every indication is that the organ (an expensive instrument) would be able to be moved and would be just as playable at Wyatt. We also understand that the organ is not part of the sale of RD Mize. If we are doing everything possible to enhance the traditional service at Wyatt, why is the organ not a part of the current moving process or at least being put into temporary storage for further consideration?
Response: The organ at RD Mize was new when the sanctuary was added to the campus in 1979. Forty-five years later, Timothy’s musicians have indicated that, while it is in good condition for its age, concerns include its safety on the stage at Wyatt, the feasibility of plugging the current organ console into the Wyatt sound system, the need for it to be more mobile than in the RD Mize balcony, and the lack of stage space for all of Timothy’s worship instruments currently at both campuses (organ, baby grand piano, keyboards, drum set) as well as altar, lectern, candles, baptismal font, and banners). Timothy’s organists have indicated that the organ-like keyboard at Wyatt not only produces a good organ sound but also is much more mobile. Storage considerations must include places that are heat, cold, and humidity controlled, none of which are available in the temporary storage containers or new storage building. (Timothy’s items temporarily stored in the Kraft barn (which is heated and cooled) will move to the new storage building upon its completion.) If, during evaluation within the first 3-6 months of 2024, Timothy determines that an organ console is necessary, it can be investigated like other changes which may be suggested as we move forward.

WE ARE CHURCH – Volunteers Are Priceless!

Volunteers are priceless, and Timothy needs you as we transition to one campus. Have you ever thought about serving as an usher either as an individual or a family? Perhaps as a worship assistant on Sunday to serve alongside the pastor, or maybe a front-desk volunteer during the weekdays? You are invited to stay after worship THIS Sunday, Dec. 10, at either campus for information and an opportunity to ask questions. You may also go to Timothy’s app and church website and click on Volunteer or click on this link. Please watch for other volunteer opportunities soon. Thanks for your support!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: Jesus Comes on a Mission“

Advent is a time to think about the coming of Jesus. But there’s more to the story than a cute little baby wrapped in swaddling cloths. After all, the manger didn’t draw that much attention.  However, the coming of Jesus was part of God’s great plan.  And we see in our readings today how the people longed for God to come and for His mission to commence because they knew it would change everything.

Devotion: “Don’t Discount Your Influence”

I remember the first time someone told me I was a leader. I looked at her in disbelief. I could think of at least a dozen reasons why she was wrong. But leading an organization or a ministry isn’t what makes me a leader. What makes me a leader is the calling Jesus placed on my life, when He commissioned me to go and make disciples.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt. 28:19-20

Let me tell you right now, you are a leader. Don’t discount your sphere of influence. You know and spend time with people who need to hear about Jesus. People who are longing for greater meaning, freedom, and truth in their lives. The answer to their longing is Jesus. The fields are ripe and ready for harvest. Jesus said so Himself. They just need some workers.

We need to live a life worthy of the calling Jesus has given us: to go and make disciples, to partner with what the Holy Spirit is already doing, and to help lead people right back to Jesus.

Advent Services

As part of your preparation for celebrating the birth of the Christ Child, make plans to join your Timothy family at this year’s Advent Services. The service on Wednesday, Dec. 6 will be in the sanctuary at 6pm. The Dec. 13 Advent service will be in the Wyatt Auditorium at 6:30pm in conjunction with the TLS 1st through 8th grade Christmas program.

Giving Trees for Journey to the Manger

You are invited to select gift tags from Timothy’s Giving Trees in the lobbies for the annual Journey to the Manger ministry, which will occur on Sunday, Dec. 10. This year, we will support families as identified by Community Services League, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in KC. The tags may be selected until Dec. 9, with all gifts, with tag attached, returned on December 10th during either worship service. Please check your gift tag to determine if the gift should be wrapped or unwrapped. Please note that there will be no inventory list identifying donor’s name with a certain gift tag.

CSL “Christmas Barrels”

An additional opportunity to benefit those in need, as identified by Community Service League, is the Christmas Barrels. Barrels are set up at both lobbies with lists of possible items. These should be returned unwrapped to the barrels anytime before December 15. Please note: This is a separate opportunity from Christmas Giving Trees for the annual Journey to the Manger. Thank you for your generosity.

Consolidation Update

Please plan to attend the second Town Hall Meeting THIS Sunday, Dec. 3rd, at 11:30am in the Wyatt Auditorium to hear the latest updates since the first Town Hall. Questions are still encouraged and can be directed to the same link on Timothy’s website by clicking on Church, then Next Generation, or by clicking here The meeting will be recorded and placed on church website on Monday, Dec 4th.

Leadership is seeking individuals with knowledge and expertise regarding flooring options for the Wyatt stage. Please contact Louie Wilbers (816.988.6059). Thanks!

Closing with Harvest Baptist Church is scheduled to occur between Jan. 4-12.

The following questions were submitted this week:
  1.  Can you elaborate more on the setup that will need to take place that is pushing the traditional service to 10:30? We believe that during this transition we will be susceptible to member attrition and that further disrupting the schedule has been followed for many years (contemporary following traditional since we started attending 15 years ago) will lead to lower church attendance. Our fear is that implementing this change, then reviewing in the first six months will be too late.  Response:  It usually takes worship staff 30 minutes prior to the arrival of the musicians and worship team to clean the stage floor. The tech people arrive early to get the sound system up and running. Then mics and belt packs are set out, as well as whatever else the musicians/vocalists need to prepare for the service, followed by a sound check with musicians and vocalists to ensure balance among them. Finally, the rehearsal starts, as this is usually the only rehearsal with musicians, and then any final corrections just in time for the start of the service. On Communion Sundays, the team assists with the table and cloth so altar guild volunteers can prepare the communion ware. The entire process takes 90 minutes.
  1. Shouldn’t we consider paying off more debt instead of building a large shed or hiring another employee when we don’t know the future direction God will take us? Response:  A Wyatt storage building is required to provide a safe and secure location for existing church property, equipment and supplies currently in the storage buildings at RD Mize and Timothy members’ homes. Stored equipment and supplies include building and lawn maintenance, snow removal, tools, cleaning equipment, Fall Festival equipment, church seasonal items, ministry supplies, and youth/school equipment and supplies. Reducing even more debt after the sale of RD Mize will be part of a debt reduction plan established by the Executive Board.
  1. Instead of renting locations to hold Bible studies, have we thought about using members’ homes? Response: Timothy is blessed to partner with our sister Lutheran church, Pointe of Hope, on North 7 Highway for three gatherings (Tuesday AM weekly Adult Bible Study, Tuesday AM weekly Women’s Bible Study, and Ruth Circle on 2nd Thursday). All other Timothy activities do not need off-site scheduling because they can occur at Wyatt. The Adult Bible Study and Ruth Circle gathering are too large to meet in members’ homes. The smaller Women’s Bible Study investigated meeting in members’ homes, but the presence of steps, both inside and outside the homes, is not workable for several women.
  1. Has there or will there be any round tables or small group gatherings to help plan the future of Timothy as this is such a large church and will most likely change the culture of the church? Response: The current expansion plan will be revisited since God led a buyer to purchase the RD Mize Campus sooner than expected. These discussions will likely be included in the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan process. This plan will be shared with leadership in December and then shared with the congregation at the Annual Voters’ Meeting on January 7, after which the congregation will be encouraged to participate.
  1. Will we begin the call for a Senior Pastor or reach out to our current pastors now that we will be at one location and that might be more suitable to someone? Response:  The 2024-2028 Strategic Plan includes a focus on staffing, the goal being to develop and implement a staffing plan, which includes calling a senior pastor, by first identifying and establishing a funding source as well as identifying and establishing a new Call Committee in 2024.

You are invited to stay after worship next Sunday, Dec. 10, at either campus for information and an opportunity to ask questions. You may also go to Timothy’s app and church website and click on Volunteer or click on this link. Please watch for other volunteer opportunities soon. Thanks for your support!
