Getting Your Feet Wet

When we read the story about Peter trying to walk on water, we often cluck our tongues at how quickly he started to sink. But at least Peter tried! He was willing to step out of the boat and try to do the impossible! The rest of the disciples hid in the boat. God calls us on a great adventure as well. May we, like Peter, take the risk and step outside of the boat.

Give Thanks to the Giver

Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. Psalm 136:2-3

The term “give thanks” sounds easy, doesn’t it? If we were to simply remember everything God has done for us, then this attitude of gratitude should be effortless. Just give thanks.

True thankfulness is a response of the heart. It’s giving praise for whom is behind it all — the good, the bad, the hard. And that’s problematic because we don’t always like what’s been going on.

In Psalm 136, we’re reminded not only of whom God is but also of what He has done. He is the “God of gods” and the “Lord of lords.” But this doesn’t make Him a distant God. Every verse has this powerful refrain reminding us of His kind and comforting love — a love that goes on and on.

We give because He has given. Our gratitude becomes a beautiful offering, conveying our gratefulness to the Giver of life as an expression of our love. Let’s respond echoing this chorus of adoration: “His love endures forever.” Let’s give thanks for all He is, for all He has done, even when circumstances are less than ideal.

Sabbatical Update

Timothy is blessed with retired pastors in our midst who will assist in several areas of ministry during Pastor John’s three-month sabbatical from Aug. 14 through Nov. 12. Pastors Lieb and Rod have graciously agreed to assist Pastor Ryan with preaching, worship leading, homebound and hospital visits, and funerals. Timothy’s elders are also available to assist as needed. Please contact Mel Falk, Acting Director of Board of Elders, if you can serve as an interim leader of Pastor John’s Tuesday Morning Bible Class. Please continue to pray for all of Timothy’s servants.  Timothy’s leadership thanks the congregation for serving and volunteering as you see a need.

Timothy’s Care Ministry is seeking a caring, compassionate individual who has experienced the death of family member or close friend to serve as a co-facilitator for our GriefShare ministry. GriefShare is a 13-week ministry meeting twice each year, spring and fall, on Thursdays from 6:30-8pm. This fall’s session begins on Sept. 21. As we study Luke’s carefully researched account of Jesus’ life, consider yourself on a journey with Luke to learn more about Jesus of Nazareth, whose body, crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, becomes the temple of the living God. Luke presents the story of Jesus’ life as a journey. The story begins at the Jerusalem temple (1:8), climaxes with Jesus teaching at the temple some 30 years later (19:45–21:38), and ends at the temple (24:53) after Jesus is crucified, buried, resurrected, and ascended outside the city.

Celebrating a New School Year

The new school year is fast approaching! We praise God for all students, teachers, and their families and pray all experience a blessed year.

Teacher Dedication Sunday will be on Sunday, August 20th, during the RD Mize service for all TLS teachers and all teachers everywhere. Thank you for supporting our students’ teachers!

On Sunday, August 27th, during both services, students of all ages and grades are invited to participate in Timothy’s annual Backpack Blessing, so bring your backpacks and receive a small gift. In addition, after the Wyatt service, worshipers and their friends are invited outside to share a brief blessing and prayer over the second trailer and tours of both trailers, if desired. TLS students will be available as tour guides.
The GATHER Commission will set up a photo booth in the lobby at each campus for families to take photos as they celebrate the start of a new school year.

2023 Confirmation Ministry

All 6th through 8th graders and their parents are urged to attend an informational meeting on Thursday, August 30, at 6:30pm in the RD Mize sanctuary about Timothy’s upcoming Confirmation ministry. The MO District’s annual campaign to support Tomorrow’s Teachers & Preachers as it promotes church work vocations and the MO District scholarship endowment fund enters its third year this month. Recruitment and retention of church workers is the first priority in the MO District strategic plan. Knowing what God can do, this task is taken with a joyful boldness and offers an invitation to all members of the MO District to participate in the raising up of workers in the fields. Next Generation Update

Timothy’s leadership is encouraged by the strong interest of Harvest Baptist Church to purchase the RD Mize Campus. The Harvest Baptist leadership received the appraisal for their facility (901 NW 19th Street) last weekend and will  meet today (Fri., Aug. 11) with the party interested in purchasing their property. Real Estate Task Force Chair, Bill Ekey, reported to the Executive Board at its meeting on Aug. 7, summarizing discussions with Harvest Baptist to date as well as recommending that Timothy move forward to choose a commercial real estate broker to market RD Mize if a mutually satisfactory agreement does not occur with Harvest Baptist within 60 days (Oct. 10, 2023), all of which was approved by the Executive Board. This development was shared with Harvest, both orally and in writing. Harvest understands that a non-refundable deposit is required before October 10 to avoid negotiating with a broker. The congregation will be updated as further developments occur. Thank you for keeping this process in your prayers.

Timothy’s Property Board is working hard to gather all necessary information to present to the City of Blue Springs to move forward with the storage building at Wyatt Campus. Conversations with the City about the overall project have started. Stay tuned for further updates.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Fed by Jesus

The feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle that’s mentioned in all four of the Gospels (aside from Jesus’ resurrection). So why is that? This story obviously captured the attention and imagination of the earliest Christians. So what can we learn from it as modern day Christians? This story is a great reminder that God continues to feed His people every day, so we pray for the faith to see how He continues to take care of us.

Stop Diminishing Your Dreams

When I went away to college, I truly began to be open to what God was doing in my life. Being raised in a church with my father as my pastor, I knew the right answers, but there came a point when those answers moved from my head to my heart, and I began listening to where God was leading my path. I just knew that God could and would do amazing things because I was listening to Him. But I’m going to be honest – that’s not what happened.

Over the years I learned to diminish my dreams because what if they didn’t come true? If you’re like me, you might have stopped saying, “What if….”  But God puts a path in front of us, and our goal is to not be distracted by everything that wants to divert our attention or change our course.

Proverbs 4:25-27 says, “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”

Here’s what you need to know about learning to say “What if…”:

It’s okay to start our “What if…” small. “What if…” questions can feel overwhelming. So don’t start by asking a big “What If..”; Try a smaller one. And it’s okay to dream about something big. Start dreaming those dreams and making those small decisions. Buy the book. Take the class. Talk with your spouse, parent, sibling, or best friend.

We can look for ways to make our lives bigger. To trust God more. We don’t have to downsize who we are. Because God has bigger things in store for us.

Next Generation Update

 Serious discussions with Harvest Baptist Church are progressing for the sale of the RD Mize Campus. Within a few days, they will receive the appraisal of their current facility at 901 NW 19th Street (across the street from Blue Springs High School), at which time they plan to continue discussions with a potential buyer for their property.  Leadership at both Timothy and Harvest Baptist are committed to an efficient purchase process with minimal, if any, assistance from a commercial realtor, beyond the use of an attorney to prepare and review the contract. At the same time, Timothy’s leadership and Real Estate Task Force interviewed four commercial realtors, knowing that process may be necessary if the sale to HBC outside the realm of a commercial realtor does not materialize. Task Force Chair Bill Ekey will present a report to the Executive Board at its meeting on Monday, August 7, seeking approval to work with one of the real estate companies outside the parameters of negotiating with HBC. All the real estate companies understand that negotiations with HBC are separate from their possible association with Timothy. The congregation will be updated as additional details transpire. Please keep this process in your prayers.

Timothy’s LWML thanks the congregation for its tremendous support of the impromptu sale of many nice decorations and LWML clothing last Sunday in the RD Mize lobby. Over $400 was collected as free-will donations for those items, which will support the LWML MO District and International mission grants. Thank you!

Timothy’s Stewardship Team has scheduled the second educational session, as, part of the year-long series of relevant financial topics for Timothy members and their guests, for Sunday, August 13th, 11:15am, in the Music Room at Wyatt. A light lunch will be served, and childcare will be available if requested. Please register your attendance for lunch and childcare planning purposes by Monday, August 7th on the Timothy app, Timothy website (www.timothylutheran.com Click on Events) or calling the church office (816.228.5300). 

The topics for this session are “Charitable Remainder Trusts” (another option for making charitable donations) and “The Role of the Executor.” Guest speaker Bunk Farrington from the law firm Humphrey, Farrington, & McClain in Independence will share an informal, hour-long overview of these topics, allowing plenty of time for questions and discussion. As a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Councils (ACTEC), Bunk will gear his presentation to adults of all ages and at all stages of the trust and estate planning process, either for themselves or for loved ones.

Following the presentation by Bunk Farrington, Timothy Stewardship Team member Mel Falk will share a repeat session on Tax-Advantaged Giving, which he presented on May 21st, for anyone who missed the first session.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
God’s Why

We may sometimes wonder why someone is our friend or why someone loves us. The people of Israel may have wondered why it was that God chose them out of all the other nations to be His people. But rather than allow them to put too much pride in themselves, God lays it out there: the reason He chose them is because of His grace. And it’s the same reason why He chooses us to be His people now. It’s not anything in us; instead, it’s all about Him.

Remembering

Some of the best conversations with my grandkids happen in the car. The thoughts and feelings tumbling around in their minds tend to surface in the quiet of the car ride, and I’m always surprised by what’s on their minds.
Perhaps that is why God told the Israelites throughout the Old Testament, “Remember!” On numerous occasions, God commanded the Israelites to build altars, signs, or symbols to help them remember who God is and what He had done.
We will face moments throughout life when we feel overwhelmed, confused, conflicted, or hurt. We must remember what we know: God is for me. He has chosen me. He will provide for all my needs. Nothing is too difficult for Him. Nothing can separate me from His love. I can rest in Him because I can trust Him.
Through remembering, we open our eyes to see God — who He is and how He works–and think about things that are excellent, lovely, and worthy of praise.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9
We must remember. Remember God’s deeds. Remember His character. Remember the gracious benefits He gives to His people. Do not forget. Remember!

Christmas (or Fall) in July . . .

This Sunday may be so close to the end of July, but that is just more reason to shop the LWML table in the lobby at RD Mize, either before worship or after, for some quality fall and Christmas decorations, among other things of value, as a different approach to cleaning closets and storage areas. For a free-will offering designated for Mission Mites, LWML members will be proud that you are the new owner of some of the gorgeous decorations displayed over the years at LWML events. Volunteer Opportunity at Timothy Lutheran School 

TLS is excited to bring back a volunteer opportunity to you! The second year of the Book Buddies Literacy Program will begin soon. This is a program that connects volunteers as a literacy partner to TLS students for the upcoming school year. If you love to help children succeed and have an hour to share each week, this is the perfect opportunity for you! This program was well-received by students and teachers last year.

Literacy training sessions will be provided, so a background in education is not required. Volunteers will receive all materials and instructions about reading materials as well as literacy games to play with the students.

Habitat for Humanity Seeks Volunteers

This week, Timothy learned of an urgent need for volunteers at Habitat for Humanity ReStores, including the one on North Highway 7 in Blue Springs. They are eager to accommodate small groups of people or individuals.
Please note — the greatest volunteer need is at Lee’s Summit ReStore, but they are accepting volunteers at all ReStore locations. Assignment Duties: greet and assist customers as needed at the ReStore; maintain and straighten merchandise and product displays close to and around the cashier station; provide outstanding customer service; unload trucks with merchandise and clean whenever; assist with donation pickup. Requirements: must wear closed-toed shoes; no tank tops or ripped jeans; sweats and shorts are allowed; must be able to lift 75 pounds; be mobile, not many sitting positions; no previous training or orientation required; must be age 16 or older.

Stewardship Team Event

Timothy’s Stewardship Team has scheduled the second educational session as part of the year-long series of relevant financial topics for Timothy members and their guests, for Sunday, August 13th, 11:15am, in the Music Room at Wyatt. A light lunch will be served, and childcare will be available if requested. Please register your attendance for lunch and childcare planning purposes by Monday, August 7th on the Timothy app, Timothy website (www.timothylutheran.com   on Events  or calling the church office (816.228.5300). 

The topics for this session are “Charitable Remainder Trusts” (another option for making charitable donations) and “The Role of the Executor.” Guest speaker Bunk Farrington from the law firm Humphrey, Farrington, & McClain in Independence will share an informal, hour-long overview of these topics, allowing plenty of time for questions and discussion. As a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Councils (ACTEC), Bunk will gear his presentation to adults of all ages and at all stages of the trust and estate planning process, either for themselves or for loved ones.

Following the presentation by Bunk Farrington, Timothy Stewardship Team member Mel Falk will share a repeat session on Tax-Advantaged Giving, which he presented on May 21st, for anyone who missed the first session.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
Wheat or Weeds?

Jesus once told a parable about His kingdom, comparing how weeds would grow within the good crop. He was pointing to a reality that we live with in the here and now, but it also points us to a reality about how sinful thoughts and actions can grow within us. Thanks be to God, though. He is the one who frees us from those destructive weeds so we can produce good fruit in keeping with our faith.

Love With (and Without) Strings

Show us your faithful love, Lord, and give us your salvation. Psalm 85:7

Looking in the mirror is hard. It’s hard when my jeans are tight or my face is broken out, and it’s hard when my sinful nature is shining brightly through the wrinkles. It’s hard when I see the expectations I place on the people I love and when I realize how far short my love falls from the love our Father gives us so freely.

When we read Psalm 85 in full, the author begs God for forgiveness, for another chance. He’s remembering all the times God has forgiven His people completely, and he’s believing that God will do it once again.

God promises that He will, and our God is faithful. He will forgive us every time, and no matter what, He will love us with unfailing love. God never shakes His head at us and shouts in exasperation, “How many times have I told you?” and He never, ever says, “I’m done.” Thank You, God, for Your faithful love. Teach us to love faithfully, too.

Stellar VBS Service Projects

The 2023 service projects were certainly well-supported! The kids, their families, and all the volunteers were again amazing with generosity!

Camp Barnabas, a summer camp in SW Missouri for individuals with special needs, will receive a total of $2,183,36!! The kids really got pumped up with the “competition” of whether the boys or girls could donate the most money. Congrats to the females this year who came out on top!

The second service project benefited Ronald McDonald House Charities in the form of essentials such as pantry items, cleaning supplies, and paper products. A  total of 11 large, heavy boxes were filled by the end of the week. The picture above shows only a portion of the total products collected. Thanks to everyone for your support!

Southern Gospel Quartet Concert

Do you like gospel music? Want to hear a quartet share their talents with us? Then take advantage of an hour of traditional Southern Gospel music on Sunday, August 20th, at 3:30pm in the RD Mize sanctuary! The quartet, recommended by Pastor Lieb, is comprised of mostly retired gentlemen, two of whom also play bass and lead guitar. They will gladly accept requests to fit in with their prepared musical selections. The event is free, but a love offering for them will be available. AND THEN . . . everyone is welcome to gather in the Family Life Center for an ice cream social!

This is a great opportunity to join Jesus on His mission with friends and neighbors. Take time to relax and appreciate some unhurried time surrounded by friends and music. Be open to how the Holy Spirit will open ways to transform lives through Christ.

Timothy’s One City Café Volunteers

Every fifth Thursday during the year, a group of dedicated volunteers serves the hungry at the One City Café in the Bishop Sullivan Center at 39th & Troost in KC. Originating as a service project for a former Timothy Adult Bible Study many years ago, a core group continues to spread the love and mission of Jesus at this restaurant. They are always looking for new faces to join them in this mission, so if you are interested or have questions, please contact Pat Bock (816.651.3772). Next Generation Update 

Discussions continue with churches interested in acquiring the RD Mize Campus. Over the past couple weeks, Timothy’s staff and Real Estate Task Force Chair Bill Ekey have also met with four potential commercial realtors, all of whom understand that any potential agreement to list with a realtor would exclude those interested parties. Timothy’s staff is compiling and gathering documentation regarding electrical systems, roofing, and HVAC systems. Look for more items soon on the “free table” in the RD Mize lobby as additional storage areas are cleaned.

Ministry Celebrations Timothy is invited to join Lutheran High School—KC celebrate Dr. Cary Stelmachowicz and his 45 years of service in Lutheran education and leadership on Sunday, July 30, from 3-5pm at the Lutheran High School gym. The school is also celebrating Lucy Kettler’s 30 years of service with a gift card shower, as she has requested to not have a formal celebration. As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Shine Jesus’ Light”

Jesus IS the light of the world.  At VBS this past week, we had plenty of opportunities to see Jesus’ light shine.  But Jesus doesn’t just go solo on this work. No, He welcomes, invites, and calls us to join Him in it. Most of us have no idea what that means, though, so let’s shine some light on God’s calling in our lives to “Shine Jesus’ Light.”

Sometimes People Leave You

Today was not what I expected. It was the first day of VBS, and some people were missing. The truth is, it could be because of me. Being misunderstood is so painful.
What is my defense? I am a child of God. Period.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Though judgments might be cast in our direction, it turns out that this seat is not a seat of execution, but a throne of grace. This is where God finds us. This is where we find Him. This is where slow healing starts, and God’s love pours in.
The song I’ve been listening to ends with the line, “You are not alone. Believe me. No one is alone.” And I smile. I am a child of God. The same God who took a beating and spilled blood because friends betrayed Him and His community misunderstood Him. We can come into His wounds and be healed through this place of grace.

Timothy’s STELLAR VBS

What a Stellar VBS Week at Timothy! Attendance hovered around 150 all week with an additional 80 teen and adult volunteers serving as Pilots & Co-pilots (class teachers), Crafts Supervisors, Snacks/Game Supervisors, Openings/Music Leaders, Cinema Leaders, Bible Story Leaders, Nursery Leaders, and Registration Leaders. Thanks to all the volunteers for sharing their time and talents with the children! Thanks also to Timothy’s GATHER Commission for providing continental breakfast items for parents Monday.

Final tallies of donations collected for two servant events will be available soon. The Ronald McDonald House Charities will receive a variety of goods to help their mission, such as paper products, pantry items, and cleaning supplies. The second servant event was collecting monetary donations to support Camp Barnabas, a summer camp in SW Missouri for individuals with special needs. Competition between the boys and the girls as to which group brings in the most money for our friends at Camp Barnabas is always popular. Stay tuned for a final report about all of that!

VBS Party for ALL

Come celebrate the end of a STELLAR week at VBS with us after worship at our Wyatt Campus on THIS SUNDAY, July 16th.  Our VBS kids will sing at worship, and then we will have an epic FOAM party, music, yard games, Sweet & Savory Delights food truck, and some crazy fun from about 11:30am-1:30pm. ONE AND ALL ARE INVITED!!!!

Joining Jesus on His Mission: 2023 Hillcrest House Party Gala & Auction

This year’s Gala & Auction will be on Saturday, August 26, from 6-10pm at the Overland Park Convention Center. Organizers promise this event will be bigger and better than ever, with a new format and a star-studded lineup of speakers. In lieu of silent auction baskets, six themed experienced packages will be auctioned. Friends and supporters are encouraged to adopt one of these packages in its entirety or donate items as part of a package. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the families and youth served by Hillcrest.  Hillcrest thanks Timothy for its ongoing support.

Southern Gospel Quartet Concert
Sunday, August 20, 2023   3:30pm   RD Mize

Do you like gospel music? Want to hear a quartet share their talents with us? Then take advantage of an hour of traditional Southern Gospel music on Sunday, August 20th, at 3:30pm in the RD Mize sanctuary! The quartet, recommended by Pastor Lieb, is comprised of mostly retired gentlemen, two of whom also play bass and lead guitar. They will gladly accept requests to fit in with their prepared musical selections. The event is free, but a love offering for them will be available. AND THEN . . . everyone is welcome to gather in the Family Life Center for an ice cream social!

This is a great opportunity to join Jesus on His mission with friends and neighbors. Take time to relax and appreciate some unhurried time surrounded by friends and music. Be open to how the Holy Spirit will open ways to transform lives for Christ.

Pointe of Hope Patio Concert Timothy is invited to join Pointe of Hope (1215 NW Hwy 7) for their concerts on the fourth Saturday evening through September. The next concert will feature Classic Rock with the Hoo Doo’s, July 29, from 7-9:30pm. The concerts are free and open to the entire family.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend

There is a constant tug-of-war going on inside all of us, the pull between our sinful natures and the redeemed saints God calls us to be. And, unfortunately, we’re the rope. This back-and-forth can be exhausting. So who can help us out of this wearying situation? God can and does through the work of His Spirit!

Come and Agree with God

My granddaughter reached a rite of passage this week. She found some scissors, and soon a chunk of hair lay on the floor, much to her momma’s horror. But after a trip to the hair salon, the smile returned as she ran to me and exclaimed, “Grandma, I have BANGS!” She was not just good – she was clearly very good.

In the first few pages of the Bible, God crafts and creates man and woman – carefully and tenderly – and then He stands back, admires His handiwork, and deems them very good. Not just good. Very good. The only thing is most of us don’t agree with Him.

God made us not only good, but very good. The more we come to grasp the love Jesus has for us, the more we see ourselves the way He sees us. I love what it says in Exodus 34 – how when Moses spent time with God, his face became radiant. “When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.”

We also become radiant when we spend time with Jesus. God made us and then called us good. But not just good – very good. Come and agree with Him. Live radiantly!

Middle School Swim Talks!
VBS week is not just for the littles.  We also will host swim talks for our middle schoolers on Tuesday, July 11th (@ Pastor Rod and Miriam’s) and Thursday, July 13th (@ Brad & Diane Mayfield’s)  from 5:30pm-7pm.  6th-8th graders are welcome to come swim, eat some BBQ/Pizza, and have a chance to spend some time with Jesus. VBS Party for ALL
Come celebrate the end of a STELLAR week at VBS with us after worship at our Wyatt Campus on Sunday, July 16th.  Our VBS kids will sing at worship, and then we will have an epic FOAM party, music, yard games, Sweet & Savory Delights food truck, and some crazy fun from about 11:30am-1:30pm. ONE AND ALL ARE INVITED!!!!

Timothy’s Care Coordinator, Sandy Gregory, shares the following story with the congregation. Enjoy!

“I love the innocence of children and their ability to make us laugh even when we feel sad. After I had to have my old dog, Ruger, put to sleep, I called my youngest son, Cameron, to ask if I could bury Ruger on his property. He agreed, and as we started digging the hole, my five-year-old grandson, Axl, asked a lot of questions. “Do his ears still work?” “When I come to your house, will he be there?” His last question caused me to giggle: “Will he get married?” I was surprised by this question but simply replied, “No, I don’t think dogs get married.” As we continued digging into the hard ground, Cameron asked Axl to tell me what he knows about Jesus. Axl proudly said, “Jesus died on the cross for our sins. He was married and in 3 days, he rose again!”

War or Peace?”

We often talk about Jesus as being the “Prince of Peace,” but the Jesus we encounter in today’s Gospel lesson is very different. He speaks of conflict and broken relationships. Is this the same Jesus? It is. But what Jesus calls us to is an exclusive relationship with Him, one that gives us true peace in this life and in the life to come.

Take Life As It Comes


Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well. Ecclesiastes 11:6

It’s baseball season. I love watching my grandsons play ball, especially when they are up to bat. They position themselves just right and watch to see what the pitcher will send their way. They can’t always wait for the pitch to be perfect; sometimes they must take the risk and swing.

In life, we, too, can’t always wait for conditions to be perfect or free from all risk. The only way to come to terms with reality is by trusting God, regardless. Instead of protecting ourselves, we need to release ourselves. Instead of hoarding, we need to give and invest. Instead of drifting, we need to pursue life. Instead of doubting, we need to courageously trust. Trust in the promise that God is ALWAYS with us while we can take life as it comes.

Timothy Supports Happy Bottoms

Thank you, Timothy, for once again supporting ministries outside our walls! The recent LWML Elizabeth Circle diaper drive between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day will make many babies happier! Kaye Gray reports that 1,356 diapers of various sizes, 2,006 baby wipes, and a $20 online donation are much appreciated. The mission of Happy Bottoms is to collaborate with the community to empower, connect, and impact low-income families by alleviating diaper need in the Kansas City area. According to the National Diaper Bank Network Check 2023, nearly 1 in 2 families with young children do not have enough diapers to keep their child clean, dry, and healthy. Happy Bottoms wants to change that, and since 2009 they have been covering the number of diapers a family is short each month, known as the diaper gap, in the KC Metro. Timothy’s donations will help their effort significantly! Thank you!

We will share His Mission by hosting a simple, fun fishing game in the “kid zone” that allows kids to win small prizes. Fireworks Lighthouse Fireworks, who will operate a tent again on Timothy’s Wyatt property near Highway 7, thanks Timothy for agreeing to rent that corner for its tent. They offer Timothy members and staff a 20% discount on fireworks purchases this year, with proceeds benefiting My Brother’s Keeper Network, a non-profit which helps women & children subjected to domestic violence and anyone needing food and security. The tent opens TODAY through July 4th, from 8am to 11pm today through July 2 and from 8am to midnight or 1am on July 3 and 4. Slaves or Free?”

We love to throw around the word “freedom.” We treasure our freedom as Americans and we know that God has set us free in Christ. But far too often, we abuse that freedom. We return to the sin from which God has redeemed us. What we don’t realize is that we are making ourselves slaves of the very forces from which God has saved us. Thankfully, Jesus is the one who sets us free from sin and death through His grace and redemption. He is the one who empowers us to live as truly free people!.

It’s Time to Experience the Lord’s Goodness

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8

God’s goodness isn’t something we are meant to simply acknowledge intellectually or believe theologically. Rather, God wants us to actively experience His goodness. “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” the psalmist encourages. It’s a call to engage our most human senses in order to recognize and enjoy our divine Creator.

As summer is upon us, look for opportunities to taste and see that which reflects God’s goodness. Savor a cold glass of homemade lemonade or bite into a juicy piece of watermelon. Enjoy watching red tomatoes grow in the garden or the summer sunset along the horizon with streaks of gold, pink, and dusty violet.

Let everything we taste and see become a reminder to turn in thanks to the Giver of all good things. Let His goodness compel us to seek refuge in Him.

Volunteer: It’s a Great Way to Give Back!

Vacation Bible School | July 10-14, 2023
Time & Location | 8:45am – 12pm | RD Mize Campus

Volunteering and supporting Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a great way to give back to our community and make a difference in the lives of others. For us at Timothy, it’s Transforming Lives through Christ. It can also be a lot of fun and rewarding.
The hard truth is that we are currently at a critical time and far behind in volunteer sign ups. We truly need you to help us make a difference in the lives of those Jesus brings to Timothy! This year VBS is July 10-14.  We are grateful for all volunteers, both during the week of VBS as well as those who help with all of the preparation.

How can you help? Students will be going through stations with their group leaders: Pilot and Co-pilot.  We will have Bible Adventure time to learn the Bible stories and work on their verse for the day. The pilot and co-pilot are discussion facilitators rather than teachers leading the whole lesson.  A Cinema stop will also be on the rotation, along with games, crafts and snacks – additional opportunities to serve.  Decorations and the opening/closing music group (Cabin Fever) are also wonderful ways to serve, making the whole week an even bigger WOW for everyone.  We thank you for your willingness to help in the way(s) that you feel called.

Crossways Bible Study

Crossways is coming back! Pastor John will once again lead this two-year journey through the entire Bible on Tuesday nights, starting on Sept. 12th, from 6:30-8pm at the RD Mize Campus. Joining Jesus on His Mission: Red, White and Blue Springs

It’s time to Join Jesus on His Mission over the upcoming holiday weekend! This year, the revitalized Blue Springs Ministerial Alliance is coordinating events for kids in conjunction with the Red, White, and Blue Springs event on Saturday, July 1st, at Blue Springs South High School. We will share His Mission by hosting a simple, fun fishing game in the “kid zone” that allows kids to win small prizes. Consider signing up for one of two shifts (5:30 – 7:15 pm or 7:15 – 9pm) AND THEN stay for the always-amazing, free fireworks show! Timothy’s Missionaries Welcomed Home

After months of planning, some of Timothy’s youth and their adult counselors spent a productive and fulfilling week transforming lives in Tulsa last week. They returned home last Friday and look forward to personally thanking Timothy and sharing highlights in both worship services this Sunday, June 25th. The youth on this trip included Malinda & Morgan Anderson, Elizabeth & Emily Storck, Marisa Gregory, Molly Hyden, Emily Poynter, Kamryn Gray, Addison Cross, and Kash Cantrell. Adult counselors were Julie & Gary Storck, Kristen Anderson, and Pastor Ryan. Thanks again, Timothy, for your prayerful and financial support of this opportunity to Transform Lives through Christ, not only for the Praying Pelicans ministry in Tulsa but also for Timothy’s missionaries participating in this venture. Praise Be to God!

Timothy’s Tithes Appreciated

Timothy’s commitment to Join Jesus on His Mission through tithing to local, regional, national, and international opportunities is always acknowledged and appreciated. Recently the following updates and thank-you letters were received:

  • Barb Rebentisch in Taiwan reports that visits with Haley for over a year have led Haley to accept a Bible and a “lesson plan” in reading it:  Read Genesis and Exodus, then skip over to the New Testament to read the gospels. (Might be a plan for all of us??)  Barb and Haley plan to meet for lunch once or twice a week to discuss what she is reading.
  • As a follow-up to Barb’s work, Mission Central also sent a separate letter, thanking Timothy for its support of Barb’s missionary work. Here is a small excerpt from that letter: “Thank you for your gift of May 25, 2023, in the amount of $321.19 for the direct support of your missionary teacher, Barbara Rebentisch in Taiwan. She is truly an amazing lady, and God is using her in a wonderful way because she can speak the Mandarin language. We couldn’t keep her at her calling without God-sending congregations like yours. Please remember to keep Barbara in your altar prayers.”
  • St. Paul Lutheran High School in Concordia, MO, thanks Timothy for its recent tithe of $321.19 to help fuel their mission:  planting seeds within students to know God’s love and mercy, which is an awesome responsibility to share Christ as they are immersed in campus life.
  • In its recent thank-you letter to Timothy for our tithe of $535.31, Hillcrest shared a success story about one of its residents, Lacy, and her two teenage sons who lived at a hotel for almost a year. To survive, Lacy picked up dental assistant jobs all over KCMO until landing a full-time position at KC Smiles. Living in a hotel with no kitchen forced her family to eat fast-food meals. At Hillcrest, she learned about creating meal plans and preparing grocery lists to help stretch her dollars. She soon was able to pay off old utility debts and learn to live within her means. It paid off because she now rents a two-bedroom home in the KC metro area. As a reminder of its mission and gratitude to congregations like Timothy, Hillcrest concluded its letter with, “Hillcrest is honored to have walked with Lacy and her sons on her journey to self-sufficiency. Your support makes this possible. Thank you!”

Thank you, Timothy, for your prayers and financial support for Timothy’s operating budget, without which these tithes are not possible. To God Be All Glory and Praise!

TLS Summer Care

The TLS Summer Care program is well underway! Forty students are registered for various days throughout the week. They are engaged in curricular activities designed to bridge the gap between end of school to the beginning of the new school year. Included in the program are special field trips for students in grades K-4, such as KC Zoo, Fun Run in BS, Extreme Cheer in Oak Grove, and Kauffman Stadum tour. Pre-school students enjoy special days on campus, such as Bike Day, Electronic Day, and Water Day. All students continue to learn about God and getting ready for the next school year. The Summer Care program runs through August 11th.

The annual Senior Ministry Pairs & Spares Picnic welcomed 40 seniors to enjoy an indoor picnic this past Tuesday in the Family Life Center. Great food, fellowship, and fun!

Pointe of Hope Patio Concert Timothy is invited to join Pointe of Hope (1215 NW Hwy 7) for their concerts on the fourth Saturday evening through September. The next concert will feature jazz artist Will Matthews TOMORROW, June 24, from 7-9:30pm. The concerts are free and open to the entire family.

Lutheran High School— KC needs families or individuals to host an international student for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. Both boys and girls from a variety of countries are applying to LHSKC, but more hosts are needed. Fireworks Lighthouse Fireworks, who will operate a tent again on Timothy’s Wyatt property near Highway 7, thanks Timothy for agreeing to rent that corner for its tent. They offer Timothy members a 20% discount on fireworks purchases this year, with proceeds benefiting My Brother’s Keeper Network, a non-profit which helps women & children subjected to domestic violence and anyone needing food and security. The tent runs from June 30 through July 4th, open from 8am to 11pm on June 30 through July 2 and from 8am to midnight or 1am on July 3 and 4. Members should take a June 25 or July 2 Sunday bulletin or today’s or next Friday’s (June 23 or 30) electronic or printed copy of Timothy Connects to receive the discount. Thank you!

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus:
 What God Wants”

What do you want? It can be a fun question, or it can be a difficult question to not only ask but answer. In our relationship with God, we may wonder what it is He wants from His people. He wants us to seek His face, to walk with Him, and then to show mercy to those we know.

A Call for the Weary and Worried

Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. Isaiah 42:10

Have you ever laughed at Scripture? Not because it’s funny but because the chances of you putting it into action are unlikely. Isaiah 42:10 is a call to sing a new song; to raise our voices, rejoice, sing for joy, and proclaim His praise. But when we’re struggling to get through the day, it’s not quite so simple or easy.

Many of us find ourselves feeling wearier and more worried than overflowing with worship and wonder. Financial worries, grief, loss, parenting struggles, or a fragile marriage, among many other unnamed cares, can weigh us down.

It’s tempting to think Isaiah 42:10 is a text for when life is all rainbows and butterflies, not stress and struggle. But it’s exactly moments like this — when life is hard, we’re tired and want things to change — that this text is for. When Isaiah spoke these words to the people of Israel, they were again in captivity, and the people were worn out and worried beyond belief. Yet in the middle of these tough times, God calls them to sing a new song — to burst forth in joy, hope, and peace in the darkness.

I quietly hum “Amazing Grace” as I walk into the hospital for a visit, and I realize the victory and freedom this grace has given me. No matter what we face or how tired and anxious we are, we can sing a new song or an old one. We can exchange our weariness and worry for worship as we find God in our darkest places.

Timothy Tithes Appreciated

Over the past several months, Timothy intentionally promoted some of the many organizations receiving our 10% tithe in the form of prayers in worship, through the weekly emailed prayers, and postcards distributed after worship on first Su7ndays. Letters of appreciation like the one below affirm our commitment to tithing. Thank you for continuing to pray for missions here locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. They all appreciate our prayers and financial  support. Just one way to join Jesus on His Mission!

“Thank you, dear saints in Blue Springs,
I am incredibly grateful for your ongoing prayers and financial support! Last Thursday evening, before we began our Chinese class (reading Luke’s gospel), my dear friend/Chinese teacher, Kass had an “ah ha” moment.  We were talking about my deaconess studies, and I showed her the first commandment with its meaning that I was memorizing for class.  Kass read it with a question mark in her voice, as if it were hard to believe: “No other gods?!”

I think that it was Kass’s first moment of realizing that Christians have only one God and are not just adding Jesus to a collection of other go-to gods.  Most of the Taiwanese have a god for business, a god for fishermen, a god for farmers as well as praying to their ancestors for their own earthly peace and for their ancestors’ well-being in the afterlife.

Please join me in praying that God will continue His good work in Kass’s heart and bring her to complete understanding, faith and joyful salvation in Jesus.

Stewardship Team Update

On May 21st, the Stewardship Team presented a brief explanation after the worship services about Tax-Advantaged Giving to help Timothy members consider how wise stewardship practices can benefit both members and Timothy. If you were unable to attend the session that day, please stop by the Information Center at either campus to pick up printed materials which may be helpful in planning. You will find information about “donating your IRA distributions to a charity,” ” your required minimum distributions: we’ll help you make the most of the money you must withdraw,”  and “qualified charitable distributions: support your favorite causes with IRA distributions” as well as the introductory information from the Stewardship Team about topics for future sessions. Bump City Update

Last Friday, Timothy kiddos and friends showed up to bump at Bump City, to the tune of 100 in number! What a fun opportunity to share the love of Jesus! Mixed in with lots of playing, they enjoyed pizza and snacks. It was a great way to kick off the summer together!

Youth Ministry Summer Adventures

Sr High: A group of senior high kiddos and adults are heading to Tulsa on our mission trip Tomorrow, June 10th through Friday, June 16th. Pairs & Spares Seniors Picnic

All seniors are invited to the annual Pairs & Spares picnic on June 20th in the Family Life Center (FLC).  Bring a dish to share for the potluck luncheon and enjoy fellowship with friends. GriefShare Update

Timothy’s current GriefShare session recently completed, and we thank God for Pam Lund’s commitment as its facilitator for the past three years. What a blessing her leadership has been to many people coping with various kinds of grief! The next GriefShare session will begin this fall, and we look forward to offering this ministry to many more people. Next Generation Update

The second TLS trailer was delivered this past Monday, June 5th, with no problems. Timothy’s staff is now waiting for the leasing company to complete the set-up process so that electrical and plumbing work can proceed as soon as possible. The goal is to prepare the trailer for occupancy by end of June.

Discussions continue with interested partiesd about the sale of RD Mize. The Real Estate Task Force is also researching commercial real estate brokers and attorneys for possible assistance when needed.

Sharing a Personal Story

One of Timothy’s members recently shared the following story, and we pass it on for the congregation to enjoy:
My sister-in-law’s younger brother unexpectedly passed away. He had been single all his life, but had a vast network of friends and fraternity brothers from college. She wanted to invite them to his Celebration of Life, but after rummaging through all his files, she could not find any contact information for any of them. She assumed she could get the information from his cell phone, but it was password protected. She tried and tried to open his phone, but with no success. One evening when she was sitting quietly, a soft voice whispered in her ear, “. . . Bill’s favorite number is 23.” She jumped up, ran to the cell phone, and typed in “232323,” and the phone opened! She was able to use his contact list to share the unfortunate news with all his friends. She later confided in me that she was convinced that it was an angel speaking to her in that soft whisper.
Dear Lord, help us all to be open and receptive to the “soft whispers” from You, the Holy Spirit, and your angels!”

Adam’s Army Blood Drive Update: “Thank you, Timothy Family, for supporting the 18th Annual Adam’s Army Blood Drive. It was a wonderful day! Forty-nine registered, and 46 units of blood were collected. This does not include donations at the Community Blood Center. These donations can help save up to 138 lives. 12 donors were 1st time givers. This will undoubtedly bless many people in our area! Opportunity Timothy woman and friends (men welcome to accompany) are invited to a “Walk and Talk” around the path at St. Mary’s Medical Center (201 NW RD Mize Rd) on Tuesdays from 11 am – noon starting this coming Tuesday, June 13th. Pointe of Hope Patio Concert Timothy is invited to join Pointe of Hope (1215 NW Hwy 7) for their concerts on the fourth Saturday evening through September. The next concert will feature jazz artist Will Matthews on June 24 from 7-9:30pm. The concerts are free and open to the entire family.

Donations Requested: Clean plastic bags and reusable cloth or plastic bags, if available, are appreciated for the staff at Lutheran Urban Mission Agency Auxiliary(LUMAA) to package food for its clients. Please place donations in clear tub in RD Mize mailbox area. Thank you very much!

Diaper Drive: Lutherans for Life Diaper Drive continues through Father’s Day. This year’s donations are designated for the Happy Bottoms organization. They accept diapers, pullups/training pants, and wipes for children only. The most used sizes are 4, 5, & 6, but all child sizes are appreciated. Diaper packages can be new or partial packages that are open in a bag or box. The wipes should be new and unopened.  Online donations are also welcome at www.happybottoms.org  Please drop off donations in the bins at either campus. Thanks for your support! If donating online, please enter Timothy Lutheran Church so Happy Bottoms can track our church as a contributor.

Food Donations: June donations will benefit Community Services League (CSL). Summer is upon us! Children are out of school, and they’re always looking for something to eat.  Food items needed are boxed pasta dinners, canned spaghetti and ravioli, tuna, all cereals, crackers, cookies, brownie mixes, jelly, canned fruit, sugar, kool aid, jello and pudding.  Whatever is on sale is needed.

As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
“Joining Jesus: God’s Favorites”

We often go through life thinking that we are God’s favorites. This is usually because of our denomination, or it could be because of our nationality, our politics, our race, or some other factor like that. But the apostle Peter once learned in a dramatic way that God doesn’t have favorites. His grace is available to everyone, which guides our attitudes towards others as well.

Restoration

God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

I picture David face down, vulnerable before the Lord, as his guilt and sorrow pour out from his broken spirit. He was left with nothing but humility, he knew the type of sacrifice God required of him. God wanted his heart.

Our world today makes it tough to appear anything but stoic, perfect, and in complete control. But we know all too well that on the other side of that screen sits a nearly broken spirit. God is far bigger than anything our minds can conceive. We were created to live fully. We must put our unbelief aside and choose to believe that God wants to restore us to a life full of His provision, blessing, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love. When we are in a place of needing restoration, we can run to the Father now and trust Him with our broken spirit and humbled heart.

Next Generation Update 

The congregation is invited to stop by the “free table” in the lobby at RD Mize to pick up usable items from storage areas that will not be stored elsewhere, moved, or discarded. As additional storage areas are cleaned, sorted, and organized over the upcoming weeks, there will be more opportunities for free items.  Contact the church office with questions.
The congregation is also invited to visit the Adult Library (Room 303) and Children’s Library (Room 304) to select books or other materials they would like to own.

Youth Ministry Summer Adventures

All children & youth: TONIGHT 6-8pm All are invited to come hang out with us at Bump City. We are going to run wild and reconnect.  Parents, we invite you to hang out and chat while your kiddos do their thing.  Pizza and snacks will be provided.  We are asking for a $5 donation per kiddo, if possible. Sr High: A group of senior high kiddos and adults are heading to Tulsa on our mission trip Saturday, June 10th through Friday, June 16th. Sr High: Revolution midweek youth study is meeting throughout the summer.  Contact Pastor Ryan for the schedule.

Jr & Sr High: It’s time to chillax and float down the river together!  It’ll be a full-day outing on June 26th from about 7:30am-8pm as we head down to the Niangua River and swim, float, and row row row our boats.  Cost will be $35.  Scholarships are available.   Adult drivers/chaperones needed also.  RSVP by June 16th to Pastor Ryan.  Ryanh@timothylutheran.com

All children & youth:  VBS is coming at you July 10-14th.  Kids pre-k through 5th are welcome to sign up for a Stellar week of fun Sign up to attend here! Those 6th  grade and up are encouraged to sign up to help for this joy-filled, intense week of Jesus. Volunteer sign up! We will have middle school swim talks that week as well on Tuesday and Thursday!  And a Sr. High BBQ Wednesday night! Invite your friends and neighbors!

Pairs & Spares Seniors Picnic

All seniors are invited to the annual Pairs & Spares picnic on June 20th in the Family Life Center (FLC).  Bring a dish to share for the potluck luncheon and enjoy fellowship with friends.
