CREATIVE TENSION: The Advent/Christmas season is supposed to be a time of joy and rejoicing, but as the days grow darker and the weather turns colder and we look back on a year with maybe a bit of regrets, we need that reminder to rejoice in every situation. Because true joy and rejoicing comes from the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. That is what gives us true, overflowing joy.
No Matter How Lost You Are, You’re Always Welcomed Home: A Devotion
One of my favorite memories as a child is playing hide-and-seek in the corn field across the road. My friend from Chicago was not so sure. As my brother counted, I said, “Follow me,” and took off running down the straight rows, zigzagged across the field to the center, and then waited quietly. Easy peasy.
Except my friend was not with me. The corn stalks were taller than she was, and suddenly she was lost in the center of a corn field, surrounded by giant stalks, blocking the view of the house.
My leadership skills clearly needed some refining. I’d led her into disaster. The problem is, I don’t just get lost in corn fields. I tend to wander off the path often, thinking I can find a better way. God’s way often feels a little too slow, requiring a bit too much patience, and I don’t tend to understand exactly where He’s taking me. So I hack my way through, convinced I’ll figure it out on my own, but I just end up lost.
But just like in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, we are never too lost or too far off the path that we won’t be welcomed home. Luke 15:24 says, “for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. ‘So, they began to celebrate.’” There is a celebration waiting for us, festivities beyond our wildest imaginations. Our Father always knows where we are and is always trembling with excitement to welcome us back home.

TLS 4th Grade Christmas Gift Variation
Upon returning from Thanksgiving break, Kim Brunkhorst’s 4th grade class at TLS discussed all of the blessings that our Heavenly Father has bestowed upon each of them and about the power of GIVING. This led to a powerful, impactful decision!
Instead of exchanging Christmas gifts with each other, the class has chosen to help other people in need. The class chose four tags from Timothy’s Giving Tree in the TLS lobby requesting the following gifts: a person who wishes for a glassware set; a person who wishes for a dishes set; a person who wishes for an adult crochet kit; and a gift card for boy aged 11-18.
Mrs. Brunkhorst then led the class on an Amazon “shopping spree” to purchase these gifts, looking forward to wrapping them when they arrive. The students are praying for the success of this project as they gain a better understanding and appreciation for the benefits of GIVING to others.

We Are Thankful for You!
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. Psalm 100:1-3a
Gratitude can shift our hearts to see God in the present moment. In suffering pain and grief, in dealing with annoyances and inconveniences, we can practice being thankful. This seemingly simple exercise has the power to change our groans to praise and to make us aware of God, who is always with us.
Practicing gratitude can look like writing down a list of things you’re grateful for — the beauty of fall, the laughter of children, the gathering of family — or it can be a list of things God has done in the past that you want to remember again. As one of those working behind the scenes, at Timothy I want to Thank you for being part of this community.

CREATIVE TENSION: It’s considered impolite to talk about money, but God doesn’t shy away from that taboo topic at all. As a matter of fact, money is one of the most discussed topics in the Bible. It’s good for God’s people to remember what money is: not a master to be served, but a form of stored service. How we use money reflects our priorities, and so it’s good for us, as we make an impact with our gifts this weekend, to ask, “What are we investing in?”
Thanksgiving Food for Your Soul
Can you reminisce about last Thanksgiving and Christmas season? Knee deep in the unknown impacts of the pandemic, many of us still experienced the slowest, most simple holiday season in years. We contemplated how to maintain this simple rhythm. So as the temptation looms to rush and ready ourselves for upcoming festivities, let’s push back against packed calendars filled with unnecessary stress and savor the celebratory moments we are creating.
Feed gratitude.
Feed flexibility. Our best laid plans may not happen.
Feed patience (lots of it).
Feed contentment. It’s difficult to remember the balance of need vs. want. We truly have everything we need.
Feed encouragement. We’re fragile. A blessed word makes hearts soar.
Feed forgiveness. This is the year. Extend forgiveness; experience freedom.
Feed hospitality. Loneliness and isolation thrive. Be that solution for one person.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
When the turkey is gone and the mashed potatoes are cold, all that is left are the shared moments and memories of doing life together sharing Christ’s love.

CREATIVE TENSION: As we approach our Impact Sunday, we remember what an impact giving can have. Obviously, it has an impact on the church, but more than that, it’s a way for us to make an impact in other people’s lives because what is given can help facilitate transforming lives through Christ. But giving also has an impact on us as well, helping us to rely on God and trust Him to continue making an impact in us.
God Shows Up in Every Moment: A Devotion
Okay, here’s what I need to know: “What do I do when it feels like one partner in a relationship isn’t meeting my expectations, but He hasn’t done anything wrong?” For the record, I am not talking about my husband, but looking at my relationship with Jesus and His partnership with Timothy Church and our current struggles.
Psalm 117:2 says, “For His lovingkindness is great toward us, and the truth of the Lord is everlasting.”
God’s love for us is neither passive nor shallow. That word, “lovingkindness,” is committed and an eternal love. While Jesus brings perfect love and kindness and mercy to the table, He’s also doing it knowing we’re broken humans who get fussy and frustrated. Jesus isn’t shocked watching us not trust Him. Rather, He shows up, moment after moment, ready to keep moving forward with us to the very end.
There are days we need to walk in faith that God really is close and He really is for our good. But when we reflect on how He has carried us and we see the ways His character is revealed, we can trust He’s here to stay. And we can respond with a life of service and sacrifice.
Cookie Walk
The youth attending the 2022 National Youth Gathering will host a Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10am-1pm in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. More details about the walk will be shared soon, but we need your help for a successful Cookie Walk. Simply put, we need cookies!
If you can make a large patch of cookies to donate to the walk, please call the church office. Please drop off all cookies at the RD Mize church office by Friday, Dec. 3rd. Please contact Pastor John (johno@timothylutheran.com) with questions.
Ministry Fair at Wyatt
Thank you to those who gathered in the RD Mize lobby last week to connect with Timothy ministries, fellowship with each other, and assemble kits of essential items for the homeless. The same opportunity will occur at Wyatt this coming Sunday. Timothy Lutheran School hosted its annual Veterans Day celebration on Thursday November 11th. We had a packed gym of our students along with families and veterans from all 5 branches of the military service in attendance. We appreciated singing, music, prayers, and moments of reflection. Our youth made cards, posters, and banners which provided the décor for the event. We are thankful for Timothy Lutheran School which teaches the Gospel so richly but also acknowledges what it means to be a good citizen and honor those who have served our country.

CREATIVE TENSION: As we look back and remember those brothers and sisters who have died in the faith, “happiness” might be far from our minds. But when we remember that “blessed” can mean “Oh, how happy!” we see how God fills us with joy in the most unlikely of circumstances. And that gives us hope that can only come from Him.
How Does It Look
Growing up as a pastor’s kid, I knew how to hide my true feelings because I needed everything to look good for a world that was watching and judging me. Here is the problem, no one is good. I am capable of doing good things, but I am not wholly and completely good all the time. I mean, when I compare myself to some people, I may seem good in my own eyes, but when Christ is my standard, I fall short every time. On the outside, I might look the part of a good Christian, but deep inside I struggle with pride, envy, and anger.
We can be focused on how we look to others, that we can’t see how dirty our heart is. It’s like when we have company and we make sure to clean the main areas, but our closets are a hot mess. Only Jesus can clean our hearts and change us from the inside out. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
When we truly understand grace and the love of God, we will no longer be satisfied with merely avoiding bad things. Jesus calls us to a life of abundance, not avoidance. We don’t simply choose to do good things to avoid shame or for the external perception of holiness but because we have been made holy by the blood of Jesus. His love compels us to pursue His goodness and extend His grace to others, impacting lives for Christ.

CrossWalk Update: God Talk at Home
Younger Kids (Pre-K – 1st grade) learned that God used Esther to save the Jews. Take Home Point: God is powerful—God’s power saves. Read the Event: God uses Esther to save the Jews, from an early reading Bible, or read & summarize the event from Esther 2-9. Prayer Power: Ask family members tell Jesus about some sins they have committed. Thank Him for dying on the cross to save them from those sins.
Older Kids (2nd – 5th grades) learned about Jeremiah’s warning to the people. Take Home Event: God is patient—come back to Him. Read the Bible: This lesson covers the book of Jeremiah. You may read about the prophet Jeremiah from a Story Bible or any available Bible. Key verse: 2 Peter 3:9, “…he is patient for your sake. He …wants all people to have an opportunity to turn to him and change the way they think and act.” Prayer Power: Ask all family members to think of how they have disobeyed God or made bad choices. Confess your sins. Then thank God that he is patient and sent Jesus to die for our sins so that w3e can turn back to him.

CREATIVE TENSION: Each and every year we set aside this day to remember the Reformation. A time and place in history where the church got called out on some of their errant ways and then invited to get “re-rooted” back in the Gospel. While this firestorm is often connected with the words of Luther which were nailed to the castle church in Wittenberg, the real crisis and centrality of the conversation revolved around the Word of God. As we gather today, there are many different voices and words swirling around. The question is, “Are we grounded in the most important Words of all, God’s?”
Time Driving Behind a Combine
Fall means harvest time. And harvest time means huge, slow, farming equipment on the move. More than once, cars flew around me and the farming equipment in no-passing zones, just barely missing oncoming traffic.
Why are we all in such a hurry? Where is our patience? I am guilty of this as well. I don’t like the anxiousness it brings. I don’t like the feeling that a fast forward button was pushed on my life or that I am missing out on what’s most important. The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. Proverbs 21:5
Although I think I’ll accomplish more, help more people, basically be a super woman when I hurry, I can’t do any of those things. Hurry robs us of what God has given to us in this beautiful life, the one He intends for us to use well. Hurry has no place here, when living our best life. With God’s grace, we can slow down and connect with Him and others.
Timothy Harvest Party Fun
Timothy Lutheran Church & School together hosted a Harvest Party last Friday at Wyatt from 5:30-7:30pm with approximately 105 kids plus parents, joining in to play carnival games, cash in on some candy, slap bracelets, bouncy balls, and more! Snacking on some pizza was mixed with lots of chatting and laughter. Praise God for a successful gathering of Timothy’s next generation and their friends!
CrossWalk Update: God Talk at Home
Younger kids (Pre-K – 1st Grade) learned about Daniel and the Lion’s Den. Take Home Point: God is powerful. God tames our fears. Read the Event: Daniel and the Lion’s Den from an early reader Bible, or read & summarize the event from Daniel 6:1-28. Prayer Power: Write “Jesus” on a large paper sack. Help your child wad up newspaper to make several newspaper balls. Throw the balls in the bag one at a time while naming fears. Explain that you are giving your fears to Jesus. Say a prayer, asking Jesus to use His power to take away your fears.
Older kids (2nd-5th grades) learned about Josiah and the Forgotten Book. Take Home Point: Never forget that God speaks to you through His Word. Read the Event: 2 Chron. 34-35 Prayer Power: Thank God that He cares enough about us to speak to us in His Word. Thank him that His Word gives us wisdom to lead godly lives in obedience to Him. Ask the Holy Spirit to help us know Jesus more and more by reading the Bible.

CREATIVE TENSION: Bartimaeus had just one wish: to see. When he heard that Jesus was approaching, he called out to Him to ask for healing. We, too, need that healing touch because far too often, we go through the world blind to the realities of what is going on around us. So, like Bartimaeus, we pray for Jesus to have mercy on us and open our eyes, too.
The Value of the Land in the Graveyard
Some years ago, I read a story in a book called Die Empty by Todd Henry. In the book, the author recalls a story in which his friend asked this question at a meeting: “What do you think is the most valuable land in the world?” Several people made their guesses: Manhattan. The gold mines of South Africa. The oil fields of the Middle East. But the friend said that all those answers were wrong. He said that the most valuable land in the world is the graveyard. Because in the graveyard are buried all the unwritten novels, businesses that never launched, unreconciled relationships, and all of the other things that people thought, “I’ll get around to that tomorrow.”
There’s a brand-new week right around the corner, and some of us have a pocketful of dreams and plans, but something might try to stop us from taking the next step. Maybe it’s fear of failure, possible rejection, time, or some other uncertainty. As a church we feel that too, So many questions, what’s coming next, are we ready…. But what if we each decided that this was the week we to take one small step toward progress? It could be a way of saying, “This is important. Our dreams are important. God’s call is still alive and well at Timothy.”
You may think you’re too old or too young, that what you have to give is insignificant, that people aren’t listening, and there are no blueprints for how to build what we feel led to build. But God is working, and the author of Hebrews has some encouragement for us, by offering a way to move forward with perseverance. 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
These verses were a rousing call to early Christians to persevere. The call relates to our faith, of course, but it’s also a reminder to keep moving forward with the hopes and dreams that God has placed inside of us. It’s time to be a part of that dream again.
Timothy Celebrates Senior Adult Ministry
Timothy’s Senior Adult Ministry will be celebrated at both campuses this weekend! Take a minute to thank our seniors for their commitment to Timothy for many years as well as the many ways they continue to serve today and will continue to serve in the future. Timothy’s rich heritage is due in large part to these faithful servants, and we thank God for each and every one of them.
Timothy’s youth ministry is thanking Timothy’s senior adults this Sunday at both campuses by providing cupcakes and homemade posters with heartfelt messages, so all seniors are encouraged to stop by the table after the service to enjoy the accolades and yummy cupcakes.
CrossWalk Update: God Talk at Home
Younger kids (Pre-K-1st grade) learned about the Three Men in the Fiery Furnace. Take Home Point: Trust God’s power. Cool! Read the Event: The Three Men in the Fiery Furnace from an early reading Bible or read/summarize the event from Daniel 3. Prayer Power: Think of times when God has used His power to help your child or family. Say a prayer together, thanking God for His powerful help.
Older kids (2nd-5th grades) learned about Good King Hezekiah. Take Home Point: Who’s on your side? We’re on God’s side. Read the Event: Read from a Bible storybook about Hezekiah in 2 Chron. 29:1-31 or 2 Chron. 29:3-6, 35-36, or 2 Chron. 32: 20-22. Prayer Power: Thank God that He has chosen us and given His Son, Jesus. Thank God that He gives us victory as we face battles. Ask Him to help remind us that we are on His side.

Hillcrest Transitional Housing Update
Timothy’s apartment has new residents! Dan Sbisa reports that April and her two-year-old son, Hunter, moved into the apartment this past Sunday afternoon. They had been living in a motel recently, and Hillcrest will be a huge help to them.
Thank you to Daryl & Becky Fowler for cleaning and stocking the apartment with groceries prior to Sunday. They were also able to meet April and Hunter who are very excited for this opportunity.
Thank you, Timothy, for your support of this ministry. We pray that April and Hunter will “transform their lives through Christ.”
Intentional, Missional Community
We’ve all been feeling it, haven’t we? The need for connection and community?
This pandemic has shown many of us how God created us to be in relationship with others. But it has been a hard task for the past year-and-a-half.
Timothy’s GO Commission wants to help reduce those barriers that keep us from being together and reaching out into the community.
On November 7th, you’ll be asked to complete a survey (the simple, fun kind!). Do any of these sound like a good time to you?
Visiting a winery
Exploring new hiking trails
Watching the game at the local brewhouse
Delving into a new book
Swapping comics
Celebrating different cultures
And there are more options—just not listed here! Be on the lookout for more details and exciting opportunities to live in an intentional, missional community.
Love from your sister in Christ,
Emily Wilson
GO Commission
Greetings from Pastor Bellinghausen
To all the Saints at Timothy,
It has been just over three months since I left you all to serve the Church in Vestal, NY. And by the grace of God, I have already had the pleasure of baptizing two infants and welcoming multiple people into the congregation. While there have certainly been hard moments as well, God has greatly blessed me in this place, and I trust that He is working all things for the good of those who love Him.
You all are often on my heart and in my prayers. As we face various challenges and opportunities, my time at the seminary and, of course, my experiences with you, have shaped my thoughts and words. I am very hopeful for my time at Grace Lutheran Church and for the work that God will accomplish in this place. I want to thank you all again for all the kindness and support that you’ve shown me throughout the years.
I am well settled here and getting to know the community more every day. And I think fondly of you all. I hope to visit you next summer. While there are many things that make a trip home difficult, I think we all know that my mother won’t let me wait any longer than that. May God bless you all as we look forward to Reformation Day and the start of Advent.
Pastor Jake Bellinghausen

CREATIVE TENSION: What does it mean when we say that we have our heart in our hand? We might mean that literally, like when a surgeon is holding a person’s heart during surgery. It could mean that we’re trying to be fully honest with a person about our feelings. But when we speak of God holding our hearts in His hand, we’re saying that He is the one who gives us life and He is the one who reveals His heart to us through His Son.
The Myth of “Practice Makes Perfect”
I started piano lessons when I was in second grade. My piano teacher was patient, but my dedication was less than stellar. Her sending words each week were the secret of every great pianist: “Practice makes perfect!” These three words were loaded with promise. But it was also a phrase loaded with pressure, especially to a seven-year-old girl. Perfection? It was an impossible target—one I could never seem to hit, and my disappointment in myself was real.
I’ve discovered the same to be true in my spiritual life. I read my Bible and go to church. I try to do what is right and live in such a way that would please God. But no sooner do I close the pages of my Bible and say, “Amen,” I find myself tripping on my pride or impatience. So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7: 21-25
We all feel the weight of sin and trying to live like Jesus, but we fail time and time again. And yet, we can see evidence of His transforming in spite of ourselves. Although we are not yet whom we want to be, we are no longer whom we once were. And when we fall on His grace in recognition of our great need, we find His power waiting for us. It is there we can leave our hard work and determination behind and, instead, rest in His work—His saving work on the cross. It is His performance that matters, not mine.
“It is finished,” He said (John 19:30). Yes, it is. The real work is already done. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me . . . and You.
Timothy Celebrates LWML Sunday
This Sunday we observe LUTHERAN WOMEN’S MISSIONARY LEAGUE. Approximately 90 Timothy ladies belong to one of three Circles (Elizabeth, Mary Martha, or Ruth), joining together for devotion, fellowship, and bring their mites for missions.
A video during Sunday worship will highlight some of the activities and events held throughout the year. Be sure to stop by the table in the lobby to meet some of the members and get more information. All ladies in Timothy are welcome to visit and/or join. Call Susan Ready, President, 816.328.2201 with questions.
All-Church Potluck
Thanks to Timothy’s GATHER Commission for organizing and implementing Timothy’s first potluck dinner since the onset of COVID about 18 months ago! Although smaller in attendance than normal, it was a start to “returning-to normal” fellowship opportunities. Always good food and good friends to enjoy! “Thinking-of-You” cards were signed for Timothy’s shut-in members. Thanks to members of the Wyatt Celebration Chorus for leading a sing-a-long session of familiar songs. Pictured are L-R, Mitch Leakey, Bob Logan, Joe Sauter, Terry Calvin, Sandy Sauter (pianist, seated) and Sandy Logan leading a rousing rendition of “This Little Gospel Light of Mine.”

Successful TLS Walk-a-Thon
What a blessing! On Friday, Sept. 24, all students, pre-school through 8th grade, participated in the 2021
TLS Walk-a-Thon, raising funds to support the first quarter TLS Mission Project. Here are some fun facts:
• 2,305 laps around the parking lot were completed
• Teachers, parents & family members assisted students with motivation by walking with them
• A total of $6,162 was raised to purchase classroom equipment
• Thank you, Kim Brunkhorst and Becky Barnett, for organizing and leading the event!
• Thank you to all who contributed and sponsored our students. Our success is your success!
The TLS mission comes from Matt. 20: 28, Sent to Serve. In a world that values self-promotion and
winning, we choose to share Christ’s Word and proclaim His good name. Our gifts, our talents, and our
purpose are to serve others as we come together as one body in Christ. I could not be prouder, nor
more blessed, than to witness the giving and call to serve in the TLS community.
In His Service,
Ken Holland

Cancer Prayer Service “Faith Over Fear”
In the eye of a storm, our faith can be challenged as fear sets in. Every day, believers and unbelievers face the impact cancer has on the life of the afflicted and in the lives of family and friends. It is without a doubt one of the toughest roads we can travel, and we don’t have to travel it alone. The word cancer brings with it heartbreaking news that creates anger, depression, loneliness, and the list goes on. Cancer threatens the gift of life God provides. Life is still a gift, so we journey forward together as God’s family.
The first Cancer Prayer Service was held in 2019 to help support and encourage cancer patients, along with their family and friends. We gathered as brothers and sisters in Christ in worship, song, and prayer as we praised God in the midst of our storms. Timothy Lutheran Ministries will host its fifth Cancer Prayer Service to support, encourage, and pray for those impacted by cancer.
Together, we praise God in the storm of life through community in God’s family—no one is ever alone in God’s family. We look forward to Norman and Anna Bannister share how faith brought them through Norman’s battle with cancer.
Please join us by inviting those you know to gather with us as we pray for one another. The event and Cancer Prayer Pack are available to anyone by request.
God’s blessings as we praise God in the storm.

Younger kids (Pre-K-1st grade) learned about Josiah hearing God’s Word. Read the event: Josiah hears God’s Word from an early reading Bible or read/summarize the event from
2 Chron. 34: 14-33. Take-Home Point: God is our King. God’s Word rules. Prayer Power: Say a prayer to thank God for His Word. Ask God to help you learn His Word more each
day.
Older kids (2nd-5th grades) learned about King Josiah’s good start but bad finish. Read the event: 2 Chron. 21 – 24 Take-Home Point: Be faithful to God now and your whole life. Prayer Power: Thank God that He sent Jesus to die for our sins and a perfect example for us to follow.
Pray that even when we mess up, we can remember to repent and ask for forgiveness. Thank God for
Jesus living in our hearts and giving us the power to finish strong.
Youth Ministry Fundraiser
Timothy’s youth thanks the congregation for participating in its various fundraisers to attend the 2022 National Youth Gathering in Houston, TX, next July. The recent Shoe Drive netted 57 bags of 25 pairs each which will add approximately $450 to the NYG fundraising effort! Thank you!
On October 31 and November 7 at both campuses, youth will be selling Price Chopper coupons for $5 each (or whatever donation you care to offer) which can be applied to the expressed purchase of sheet cakes, deli party trays, bakery pies, rotisserie or fried chicken, and $5 off total purchase of $50 or more. What a deal! Five different opportunities to save a total of $18 if all individual discounts are used! Even though these coupons expire on Dec. 31, 2021, they are timely for the holiday seasons approaching quickly!
If unable to purchase your coupons on Oct. 31 or Nov. 7, you can contact any of the youth, Pastor Ryan, or the church office. Thanks for your support! It is a tremendous blessing for the youth to have Timothy’s spiritual and financial support for this life-changing week!
Homeless Kits Update
Donations for the homeless-kit project at Timothy’s Ministry Fair on Nov. 7 (RD Mize) and Nov. 14 (Wyatt) are going well! The bins/boxes for drop-off of items are in lobby of both campuses. Items will be collected through Oct. 31. Thank you!
For now, the most-needed items are small bottles mouthwash, small tubes tooth paste, small bottles hand lotion, wash cloths, small bottles hand sanitizer, small cans deodorant, small hair brushes/combs, disposable razors, small cans shaving cream, and granola bars. A sufficient amount of Ziploc bags, tooth brushes, and dental floss has been collected. Please watch for updates each week! Thank you!
We look forward to the congregation learning about Timothy’s ministries as well as assembling simple homeless kits when they visit the tables in the lobbies. Be sure to take advantage of this dual purpose opportunity!

CREATIVE TENSION: The Judean exiles had a dream: to home, and to go home soon. And they had “prophets” who were telling them that their dreams would come true. It was Jeremiah’s job to bring them back to reality. Their exile wouldn’t be short. They should settle in, raise families, buy houses. But in the midst of this bad news, God reminds them that He is still there. They still have a future with Him. And He makes the same promise to us when our dreams unravel, too.
Hard on Yourself? Try Curiosity Instead of Criticism
Elyse, my two-year-old granddaughter, recently got a haircut. The stylist handed her a small mirror and told her to look into it. It was an attempt to help her sit still, and it worked. Elyse leaned toward the mirror until she was so close her breath made fog on it. She was intrigued by her own face. Watching her, I was struck by how differently she and I look into mirrors.
Sometimes we pause and take a closer look at our lives. We reflect on the past and look forward to the future. We often do so with a harsh eye. We remember our mistakes, the goals we didn’t meet.
But what if we try Elyse’s approach instead? What if, instead of looking with criticism, we look with curiosity? Criticism condemns; curiosity invites us to learn. Criticism holds us back; curiosity inspires us to grow. Romans 8:34 says, “Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us.” When we choose curiosity rather than criticism, we’re more aligned with the heart of God toward us. Curious questions sound like – What am I learning?– How am I growing? – In what ways am I getting stronger? Let’s hold a mirror up to our hearts and lives sometimes. Let’s find ways to keep learning, growing, and becoming stronger. As we do, let’s also remember that curiosity is more helpful than self-criticism. Let’s resolve not to use condemnation as motivation when the God we serve only uses grace.

Younger kids (Pre-K – 1st grade) learned about King Hezekiah praying to God and hearing His answer. Read the event: King Hezekiah prays and God answers. Suggestion to read from an early reading Bible or summarize the event from 2 Chron. 32:1-22. Take-home point to remember: God is our King. Pray to the King. Prayer Power: Ask each family member to share a problem needing prayers from the rest of the family. As each person shares, the rest of the family put their hands on that person and prays for him/her.

MO District Thanks Timothy
On August 29, Timothy participated in a MO District initiative to raise funds for the Tomorrow’s Teachers and Preachers program, collecting $578 as a free-will offering for this purpose. The thank-you note below arrived late last week: Dear Members of Timothy, Your forward-thinking generosity is a blessing! Thank you for your gift to the scholarship endowment of the Missouri District. We may not know who the next generation of church workers will be, but God certainly does. You’re already a source of encouragement to these men and women. It’s great to be about this work in God’s Kingdom with you all.
Missionary Appreciates Timothy’s Support
Timothy’s Executive Board is planning a Ministry Fair in the lobby of both campuses Timothy received a thank-you letter this week from Barb Rebentisch, serving as a LCMS missionary in
As I reflect on the past year of career missionary work with the LCMS, I’m extremely grateful for your support. I’ve been able to edit Chinese translations of several books, interpret for six sacred music seminars, and further develop the lutheranchinese.org website. None of this would have been possible apart from your support. I hope next summer to visit you sometime between June and September.
God’s peace,
Barb
More Appreciation for Timothy’s Tithe
Timothy received a thank-you letter from Lutheran Church Charities for our support. The mission of LCC is to share the mercy, compassion, presence, and proclamation of Jesus Christ, drawing upon Matthew 25 to serve others: Our Lord said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” …”The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Matt. 25: 35-40.
In part, President/CEO of LCC expressed his appreciation of Timothy’s support as follows: I want to personally thank you for your faithful support to Lutheran Church Charities and for your gift of $3,000 to the Lutheran Church Charities Disaster Relief Fund—Hurricane Ida. Dollar per dollar, EVERY dollar given goes directly to your chosen cause. Your support allows Lutheran Church Charities to continue to touch lives with the presence of Christ.

CREATIVE TENSION: Zacchaeus was living the dream. He had reached the pinnacle of his career, he was wealthy beyond measure, and yet his life was missing something important, something that he thought he might find in Jesus. But he got more than he bargained for. Jesus’ invitation to lunch unraveled his sin and comfort and brought him to a new life, one of repentance and service.
A Taste of Heaven
A terrible condition has now become the norm in our kitchens: Dinner must be made in thirty minutes and consumed in even less time. I remember as a child using the kitchen as a place to enjoy and bake with anticipation, searching through Betty Crocker for a new recipe. With Rod’s new health challenges, we are taking more time to search for recipes, read labels and prepare foods to balance his needs. It could be a terrible time, but I have found it to be a wonderful time we spend together with a unified goal. It refocuses my heart and brings me back to a place I have always loved.
Jesus cooked! Our Lord, in His resurrected body, made His disciples breakfast. Heaven came down, stoked the coals, scaled the fish, and used all His senses. Cooking is an invitation to join God in the joy of creation. So enjoy the thrill of stripping away the peel on a sweet potato or the happy scent of a freshly cut lemon — God programmed those moments of delight into every creation. Those moments are His delight, too, and possibly it sheds light on God’s delight in creating us.
Perhaps that’s what Paul meant when he wrote the verse: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.” 1 Corth. 10:31
And if there is holiness in the kitchen, I’d wager there’s probably holiness in the laundry room or in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Inviting Jesus into our day can convince us of a simple truth: A taste of heaven is in every earthly bite.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
NEEDED!
The New “MinistryOne” App needs the most current information. If you have recently changed primary email address or phone number, please update by completing a Communication Card/Slip and place in offering plate, give to an usher, or contact church office! This is a crucial first step prior to installing this app on October 24th for easier engagement with your church.

Ministry Fair
Timothy’s Executive Board is planning a Ministry Fair in the lobby of both campuses, Nov. 7 at RD Mizeand Nov. 14, at Wyatt. In addition to learning about opportunities associated with Timothy’s various ministries, worshippers will pick up one item at each table for a homeless kit and take the kit to keep in their car for someone in the community.
The goals are not only internal outreach to learn more ways to serve at Timothy, but also external outreach to offer a helping hand. Timothy’s Care Minister Nancy Nowiszewski shares the following story about this type of community outreach:
“I carry one of the bags in my car to give to a homeless person, whom I usually see at corners in the city or near the interstate in BS. I had to take a second look a few weeks ago when I spotted a thin man and his dog walking through the Target parking lot. I knew I needed to give him the kit I had with me, so I quickly got into my car and headed in the direction he had gone. I couldn’t see him anywhere so I said a quick prayer that I would see the man, if I was meant to help him. As I looked down the street, I saw him in the distance, backpack on his back, walking with his dog. I pulled up alongside him and rolled down my window to tell him I had a little help for him. He walked over, and with a toothy grin, thanked me for the bag with some essentials and papers. I pointed out that the papers included information on how to get help finding a job and a little cash would buy him a sandwich. As I turned the car around to go home, I saw that he had found a tree to sit under to escape the hot sun and was going through the homeless kit to discover the contents. I pray he read the Christian tract and saw the invitation to visit Timothy. He continues in my prayers.”
With this story in mind, listed below are items to donate for this project (travel sizes are great!). If you can help, please drop off in Ministry Fair bins in each lobby during month of October.
