Hard on Yourself? Try Curiosity Instead of Criticism

Elyse, my two-year-old granddaughter, recently got a haircut. The stylist handed her a small mirror and told her to look into it. It was an attempt to help her sit still, and it worked. Elyse leaned toward the mirror until she was so close her breath made fog on it. She was intrigued by her own face. Watching her, I was struck by how differently she and I look into mirrors.
Sometimes we pause and take a closer look at our lives. We reflect on the past and look forward to the future. We often do so with a harsh eye. We remember our mistakes, the goals we didn’t meet.
But what if we try Elyse’s approach instead? What if, instead of looking with criticism, we look with curiosity? Criticism condemns; curiosity invites us to learn. Criticism holds us back; curiosity inspires us to grow. Romans 8:34 says, “Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us.” When we choose curiosity rather than criticism, we’re more aligned with the heart of God toward us. Curious questions sound like – What am I learning? – How am I growing? – In what ways am I getting stronger?
Let’s hold a mirror up to our hearts and lives sometimes. Let’s find ways to keep learning, growing, and becoming stronger. As we do, let’s also remember that curiosity is more helpful than self-criticism. Let’s resolve not to use condemnation as motivation when the God we serve only uses grace.

Cancer Prayer Service “Faith Over Fear”

In the eye of a storm, our faith can be challenged as fear sets in. Every day, believers and unbelievers face the impact cancer has on the life of the afflicted and in the lives of family and friends. It is without a doubt one of the toughest roads we can travel, and we don’t have to travel it alone. The word cancer brings with it heartbreaking news that creates anger, depression, loneliness, and the list goes on. Cancer threatens the gift of life God provides. Life is still a gift, so we journey forward together as God’s family.

The first Cancer Prayer Service was held in 2019 to help support and encourage cancer patients, along with their family and friends. We gathered as brothers and sisters in Christ in worship, song, and prayer as we praised God in the midst of our storms. Timothy Lutheran Ministries will host its fifth Cancer Prayer Service to support, encourage, and pray for those impacted by cancer.

Together, we praise God in the storm of life through community in God’s family—no one is ever alone in God’s family. We look forward to Norman and Anna Bannister share how faith brought them through Norman’s battle with cancer.

Please join us by inviting those you know to gather with us as we pray for one another. The event and Cancer Prayer Pack are available to anyone by request.

CrossWalk Update: God Talk at Home

Younger kids (Pre-K – 1^st grade) learned about King Hezekiah praying to God and hearing His answer.
Read the event: King Hezekiah prays and God answers. Suggestion to read from an early reading Bible or summarize the event from 2 Chron. 32:1-22.
Take-home point to remember: God is our King. Pray to the King.
Prayer Power: Ask each family member to share a problem needing prayers from the rest of the family. As each person shares, the rest of the family put their hands on that person and prays for him/her.

Older kids (2^nd-5^th grades) learned about Jehoram’s awful death.
Read the event: 2 Chron. 21: 4-20
Take-home point to remember: If you ignore God, you’ll go out of control.
Prayer Power: Encourage family members to confess areas in their lives that are out of control and urge them to ask for God’s control.

MO District Thanks Timothy

On August 29, Timothy participated in a MO District initiative to raise funds for the Tomorrow’s Teachers and Preachers program, collecting $578 as a free-will offering for this purpose. The thank-you note below arrived late last week:

More Appreciation for Timothy’s Tithe

Timothy received a thank-you letter from Lutheran Church Charities for our support. The mission of LCC is to share the mercy, compassion, presence, and proclamation of Jesus Christ, drawing upon Matthew 25 to serve others: Our Lord said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” …”The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” Matt. 25: 35-40.
