As We Gather for Worship This Weekend
Wheat or Weeds?

Jesus once told a parable about His kingdom, comparing how weeds would grow within the good crop. He was pointing to a reality that we live with in the here and now, but it also points us to a reality about how sinful thoughts and actions can grow within us. Thanks be to God, though. He is the one who frees us from those destructive weeds so we can produce good fruit in keeping with our faith.

Love With (and Without) Strings

Show us your faithful love, Lord, and give us your salvation. Psalm 85:7

Looking in the mirror is hard. It’s hard when my jeans are tight or my face is broken out, and it’s hard when my sinful nature is shining brightly through the wrinkles. It’s hard when I see the expectations I place on the people I love and when I realize how far short my love falls from the love our Father gives us so freely.

When we read Psalm 85 in full, the author begs God for forgiveness, for another chance. He’s remembering all the times God has forgiven His people completely, and he’s believing that God will do it once again.

God promises that He will, and our God is faithful. He will forgive us every time, and no matter what, He will love us with unfailing love. God never shakes His head at us and shouts in exasperation, “How many times have I told you?” and He never, ever says, “I’m done.” Thank You, God, for Your faithful love. Teach us to love faithfully, too.

Stellar VBS Service Projects

The 2023 service projects were certainly well-supported! The kids, their families, and all the volunteers were again amazing with generosity!

Camp Barnabas, a summer camp in SW Missouri for individuals with special needs, will receive a total of $2,183,36!! The kids really got pumped up with the “competition” of whether the boys or girls could donate the most money. Congrats to the females this year who came out on top!

The second service project benefited Ronald McDonald House Charities in the form of essentials such as pantry items, cleaning supplies, and paper products. A  total of 11 large, heavy boxes were filled by the end of the week. The picture above shows only a portion of the total products collected. Thanks to everyone for your support!

Joining Jesus on His Mission:
Southern Gospel Quartet Concert
Sunday, August 20, 2023   3:30pm   RD Mize

Do you like gospel music? Want to hear a quartet share their talents with us? Then take advantage of an hour of traditional Southern Gospel music on Sunday, August 20th, at 3:30pm in the RD Mize sanctuary! The quartet, recommended by Pastor Lieb, is comprised of mostly retired gentlemen, two of whom also play bass and lead guitar. They will gladly accept requests to fit in with their prepared musical selections. The event is free, but a love offering for them will be available. AND THEN . . . everyone is welcome to gather in the Family Life Center for an ice cream social!

This is a great opportunity to join Jesus on His mission with friends and neighbors. Take time to relax and appreciate some unhurried time surrounded by friends and music. Be open to how the Holy Spirit will open ways to transform lives through Christ.

Volunteer Opportunity at Timothy Lutheran School

TLS is excited to bring back a volunteer opportunity to you! The second year of the Book Buddies Literacy Program will begin soon. This is a program that connects volunteers as a literacy partner to TLS students for the upcoming school year. If you love to help children succeed and have an hour to share each week, this is the perfect opportunity for you! This program was well-received by students and teachers last year.

Literacy training sessions will be provided, so a background in education is not required. Volunteers will receive all materials and instructions about reading materials as well as literacy games to play with the students.

Please reach out to Mary Beth Self (marybeths@timothylutheran.com) or call the school office (816.228.5300 Ext. 8017) if you are interested in more information about this great opportunity or ready to sign up!

Joining Jesus on His Mission:
Timothy’s One City Café Volunteers

Every fifth Thursday during the year, a group of dedicated volunteers serves the hungry at the One City Café in the Bishop Sullivan Center at 39th & Troost in KC. Originating as a service project for a former Timothy Adult Bible Study many years ago, a core group continues to spread the love and mission of Jesus at this restaurant. They are always looking for new faces to join them in this mission, so if you are interested or have questions, please contact Pat Bock (816.651.3772). Pictured are Donna Byars and Peggy Nie (friends of Pat) and Timothy members Pat & Charlie Bock, Carol & Ron Windler, Janel & Steve Schild, and Sandy & Greg Galvin after finishing their service on June 29th.

Next Generation Update

Discussions continue with churches interested in acquiring the RD Mize Campus. Over the past couple weeks, Timothy’s staff and Real Estate Task Force Chair Bill Ekey have also met with four potential commercial realtors, all of whom understand that any potential agreement to list with a realtor would exclude those interested parties. Timothy’s staff is compiling and gathering documentation regarding electrical systems, roofing, and HVAC systems. Look for more items soon on the “free table” in the RD Mize lobby as additional storage areas are cleaned.
