“Unraveled: Paul’s Destination”

CREATIVE TENSION: Paul knew where he was going. He was headed to Damascus to bring down those heretics who claimed that Jesus was the Messiah. His zeal for God’s truth drove every step. But then he encountered Jesus on the road, a confrontation that changed his destination. He was still headed for Damascus, but with a new purpose: to proclaim the Gospel of the Christ who confronted Him. Sometimes we need to let our destinations unravel so that we arrive where God wants us to.

When Difficult Change Makes You Scared to Be Happy Again

Sometime ago, a couple of big changes clobbered into me, and seemed to drag on and on and on. And while I went about taking care of my family, fixing meals, cleaning house, buying the birthday gifts and doing the next thing that needed to be done, I didn’t have the same joy I had before. I felt guarded and suspicious and so, so tired. Even after positive resolution finally came, my heart couldn’t shake that worn-out feeling.
So I carried this heavy feeling that wasn’t depression yet wasn’t my normal self, and eventually I mentioned it to my friend. “Why can’t I snap out of it?” I asked. She helped me name the message I’d internalized inside:
If I become happy, something bad will happen again.
I prayed and prayed, and one day as I was reading scripture, I read John 10 verse 10: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullI knew God wanted me to know that whatever changes come, He would not dole out crumbs to me.
He doesn’t dole out crumbs to any of us. His Son Jesus is proof that He moves behind the scenes to set us up for the abundant life — even when what stands in plain sight seems anything but. God moves. He will use this change for good because His presence — and His love — are here to stay.

Festival Committee Thanks Timothy

Timothy’s Festival Committee would like to extend a huge “Thank You!” to all who joined us in support of our annual Steak Burger event at the Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest this past weekend.

Understandably, the volunteer participation was lower than normal this year, prompting a plea for enough help to support one of the two lines throughout the ten-shift event. The response was heartwarming, and we were able to do that and also support both lines during the heaviest periods of the event. We are grateful for all who support the effort, on and off the booth, behind the lines running supplies, taking orders, preparing food in the kitchen, working the condiment “assembly line,” and especially with the demanding set-up and take-down work.

Many were first-time volunteers, and some worked multiple shifts to fill the need. Your support lifted our spirits and made this year’s event a success and a Sunday sell-out!

It’s sometimes difficult to appreciate the impact that this work has on our community, but being in the line and hearting firsthand the gratitude from people who have looked forward to celebrating the season with a Timmy Burger is a strong reminder that our ministry in the community matters. Many were not just thanking us for the great burger tradition, but also just for being there.

We thank you and look forward to seeing you again next year!

Blessings,    Chris Hruska

CrossWalk Update: God Talk at Home

Younger kids (Pre-K-1st grade) learned that Solomon’s wisdom is God’s wisdom.
Read the event:  Want to talk about this more with your family? Read about the event from an early-reading Bible: God gives King Solomon wisdom. 1 King 3: 6-10 and 10: 1-10.
Take home point to remember:  “God is our King. Use your mind to serve the King.”
Prayer Power:  Ask God to help you be wise and make wise choices.

Older kids (2nd-5th grades) learned ab out Bad Kings—Merciful God. Children learned from King Rehoboam’s mistake. Don’t pretend to make yourself greater than God or act like you don’t need Him. Humble yourself before Him, admit your need, and follow His ways!
Read the event:  2 Chronicles 12: 9-16.
Take home point to remember:  Be humble before the Lord and receive His mercy.
Prayer Power:  Thank God that he is bigger than us and can turn bad things into good things. Pray to give God our pride so we can receive His mercy. Acknowledge that we need God and ask Him to reign in our hearts and give us the power to rely on Him.

“Unraveled: Job’s Lament”

CREATIVE TENSION: Sometimes it all comes crashing down around us and for little or no reason we can discern. That’s what Job experienced: a complete disaster, a loss beyond anything he had ever experienced. So as he tries to piece together the reasons, he leans on God for wisdom and understanding. And faith is the lens that helps us see God working when everything unravels around us, because we know that, in our weakness, He is strong. And He has overcome the world.

Blessed Be the Name of the Lord, No Matter What

I like to look at the bright side of a situation. But I also need to realize that most of our life is not wild swings of really good or really hard. Most of the time, the good and the hard come nestled together with an “and” tucked in between.

The world teaches us to look at ourselves and others as either victims or overcomers. But our lives are so much messier than that. Our stories are complicated and chaotic. We have contradicting and complex emotions that sit right next to each other and demand to be recognized and dealt with.

We see this in the Old Testament story of Job. If anyone had earned the right to paint himself as the victim, Job did: the death of his ten children, the loss of everything he owned, all in one day. And here is what I love about Job’s story: he fell on the ground and declared to God: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” Job 1: 21

Praising God doesn’t mean we ignore all the hard. We feel our feelings. We experience joy and anguish. Then we take the difficult, holy step of saying, “Not only do we trust God, but we bless His name.” As I begin my day, looking at the challenges I know about, I pray I recognize the hand of God and say, “May the name of the Lord be praised, who both gives gifts and sometimes takes them away.”

Prayers for the Otte Family

Earlier this week, three members of Pastor Otte’s family, including Pastor John, tested positive for COVID -19. Pastor John plans to return to his office and activities next Thursday if all goes well. He reports that they are improving and appreciate any and all prayers. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE DATE AND ROOM CHANGE…. Started this past Wednesday but you are still welcome to join…

Join me in the JourneyMen 40-Day Red Letter Challenge. Too many followers of Jesus read the Bible but never put those words into practice. Likewise, there are many who do good works but aren’t sure why they are doing them. Putting God’s Word into practice is much more effective when you are not alone.

Commit to participate in the JourneyMen 40-Day challenge with a group of men as we use one another as accountability partners walking together in this journey. Stretch your faith by getting involved and doing the things God is asking you to do. When you feel unequipped and unprepared, God will use those moments to give, shape, and form your faith life.

2021 Fall Fun Fest

Timothy will once again reach into the community this weekend with the annual Steak Burger booth at 11th & Main in Downtown BS. Thanks for supporting this outreach opportunity by volunteering and/or purchasing the delicious burgers and spreading the love of Jesus with everyone you see.

A special treat will be cheering for the TLS float in the parade Saturday morning! The float will be #53 and will be eager to wave as it passes by the steak burger booth. Go Rams!

Children’s Ministry Update

Children’s ministry is looking forward to a year of fun and excitement, learning about our faith and the love of Jesus through His Word.

Last week, children in Pre-K through 1st grade learned about David dancing with joy before the Lord in 2 Samuel 6:11-15. Family devotions may focus on the story by asking your children these questions: 1) What does God give you that makes you happy? 2) What good things has God done for you? 3) How can we praise God? Prayer Power: Pray to God and tell him why you think he is wonderful. Ideas from older siblings or parents may include reminders that He is loving, He is the Creator, or He always forgives.

Children in grades 2-5 learned about Esther. Key Verse: Ps. 18:17 He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, because they were too strong for me. Suggested Family Time Options: God used Esther to help rescue His people. God can use us to help rescue people when we share the love of Jesus with them. Think of ways the family can share the love of Jesus with others in the community. This is God using you to rescue them.

We look forward to seeing your family on Wednesdays at RD Mize from 6:30-8pm.

10,000 Reasons

We are called to worship.

It’s like that song “10,000 Reasons” says: “Bless the Lord, O my soul…Worship His Holy Name. Sing like never before. . . I’ll worship Your Holy Name.”

We are called to worship the Great and Glorious God who brings the sun up each day and provides an escape plan from sin and death to eternal life.

Music enhances our worship, and you are invited to join us in choir. Currently, the contemporary choir practices on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 at the Wyatt Campus; the sanctuary choir will practice on Wednesday evenings, starting Wed., Sept. 22, from 7-8pm in the sanctuary.

Hope you can be a part of bringing praises to our worship. Contact Miriam Lindemann (miriaml@timothylutheran.com) or Sandy Sauter (sautersandy5@gmail.com) with questions and to sign up.

“Breakfast Debrief”

Fifteen of Timothy’s middle school and senior high youth, including a non-member from TLS, connected last Saturday, Sept. 11, for a “Breakfast Debrief.” They enjoyed a “splendiferous” breakfast buffet of biscuits & gravy, pancakes, sweet bread, bacon, sausage, egg casserole, fruit salad, along with milk, juice, & coffee! All prepared by amazing youth leaders Becky & Erick Blatt, Carrie Hochgrebe, Ryan Kuecker & Melissa Westermann.

The “debrief” included laughs about personal, random factoids about the start of this school year and how the school year has started in general. The morning concluded in 1 Kings 19:2-8 with a reminder that God cares for us in our highs and lows. Thanks for supporting our NEXT GENERATION!

Hillcrest Gala Update

Timothy learned this week that the 21st Annual Gala & Auction on August 19th raised $250,000 in support of its housing programs for homeless families in our community. Praise God!

Timothy’s recent graduate, Jennifer, entered Hillcrest’s program in need of direction to get her finances and life back on track to provide a stable home for her children. Her goal was to leave behind her old life of addiction, become the mom she knew she could be, and provide a place of stability for her children by owning her own home. With Jennifer’s determination, a lot of hard work and the help and support of her case manager, Jennifer succeeded. She obtained each of her goals. In Jennifer’s words: “I want to thank everyone at Hillcrest. I was able to achieve my goals that I worked hard for; and, with the support of the program, I have a home now that is my own—and I am not going to be homeless again.”

Hillcrest thanks Timothy for its support in making a real difference for Jennifer and her children, and the hundreds of other families, individuals, youth and children they are privileged to serve. Thank you, Timothy!

THEME: “Unraveled: Rizpah’s Mourning”

CREATIVE TENSION: Rizpah, Saul’s concubine, cried out when her sons were killed. Her mourning caught the attention of the king himself, who set things right. So how do we grieve in the wake of injustice and loss? Sometimes the loss we experience can be unraveled to bring about powerful change and a blessing to others.

WORDS: A DEVOTION

I open my computer, and I am met with extreme opinions something like this:
Caption: Look at this cinnamon roll! (Photo of a bakery item the size of the moon, next to a hot cup of coffee, flower arrangement, and open Bible)
Comment 1: Yum!
Comment 2: LOL, gluten is bad for you!
Comment 3: I ate a donut last week, and it gave me an infection in my big toe. Look at this (photo attached).
Comment 4: My Aunt was a donut maker, and she’s also a (insert political affiliation), so we don’t eat them anymore. No thanks, can’t be associated with them!
I close the computer and think about it: Why are people like this?

As believers, we should be people marked not by fear, hatred, or murderous words but by peace. We should have a desire for unity instead of desiring and actively seeking out division with our words.
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:32-33
Read that verse again. Notice how your body responds to the truth. It’s quite different from scrolling through a social media feed. God is our Good Shepherd. He actively looks to bring us back to Himself, reorient our hearts toward Him, and give us the peace of His guidance, care, and protection. When we see ourselves and others with the right perspective, we remember that our words, whether written in a comment or spoken out loud, have the power to give life and speak truth.

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes—Youth Need More!

Thank you, Timothy, for supporting the Youth Ministry Shoe Collection Fundraiser! To date, 33 bags of 25 pairs each are ready to send off, but that is 1/3 of desired goal of 100 bags ($1,000 for upcoming youth trips). The sponsoring company has agreed to extend the deadline until Sept. 30.

So spread the word to family & friends! Drop off in bins at each campus! Let’s try very hard to reach this goal. Thank you!

As We Gather For Worship This Weekend

THEME: Unraveled: Sarah’s Laughter

CREATIVE TENSION: Sometimes God has the last laugh. When He told Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son in their old age, both Abraham and Sarah responded with laughter. They had been waiting for so long and faced disappointment so many times that it seemed impossible. But their lack of knowledge about how powerful God is unraveled into joy and faith as their son was born.

Baby STEPS
Supporting Timothy’s Expectant Parents

Baby Steps is a ministry that supports and celebrates the new life with which God blesses our Timothy families. This support may come through a variety of personal contact opportunities, such as phone calls, cards, prayers, and a home-cooked meal upon arriving home from the hospital. In addition, each Timothy baby receives a new pair of booties, handmade by a volunteer, as a gift from the church. The booties are white to remind them of being washed clean at their baptism of becoming a Child of God.

Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle coordinates the Baby STEPS ministry. Support throughout the pregnancy is available and encouraged as families prepare for a new loved one. If you would like to be a Baby STEPS recipient or volunteer, please contact Kaye Gray (816.585.6530 or kgray1024@outlook.com).

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart.” Jeremiah 1:5

Wednesday Education Activities in Full Swing

CrossWalk, Confirmation, and Senior High Youth kicked off a new year in grand style Wednesday evening from 6:30-8pm at RD Mize. King Rodnae, Pastor Ryan, teachers, and group leaders welcomed students to a new year.

Kids in Crosswalk savored ice cream sundaes and then broke out their markers to illuminate the beautiful name of Jesus. They were reminded that they are all connected and growing in JESUS. Be on the lookout for their artwork around RD Mize.

Confirmation revved up again with a packed house of 26 students for the first week, and it’s not too late to start next week. Timothy’s Confirmation is intended to involve heart, mind, spirit, and family. There was time to react to Pastor John’s lesson, ask questions, learn lifelong spiritual tools, and talk in small groups about the highs and lows of “life.” Please pray for the Holy Spirit to continue stirring in our young people.

Senior High students was rocking with 10 kids creating craziness and creativity as they began building an altar of stone in the youth room. Each stone represents one of our youth and also reminds them of WHOM they worship, and where they stand (on the Lord’s side!)

If you could not attend the kickoff this Wednesday, plan to join the activities next week. Bring your friends!

Confirmation Prayer Pals

Interested in supporting a Confirmation student (6th-8th grader)? This ministry is resuming after taking a break in 2020 due to COVID.

As a prayer pal, high school youth and adults are encouraged to pray for and support a Confirmation student throughout the school year by praying for your assigned student, leaving notes of encouragement (approx. once a month), and attending your Confirmand’s faith story in worship (8th graders). You do not need to already know your student.
If interested, pick up a flyer at either Information Center or contact Mary Low (k2lmlow@sbcglobal.net) or church office for more details. Timothy’s Prayer Pal ministry is a great way to share your faith and to help Confirmation students on their faith journey.

Staffed Nursery Resumes

The nursery at both campuses will again be staffed on Wednesday evenings at RD Mize (6:15-8:15pm) and Sunday mornings at Wyatt (9:45-11:15am) for children under 3 years old. The RD Mize nursery will be open on Sunday mornings for families but not staffed until warranted. Please contact the church office if child care is requested for other activities during the week.

It’s not too late to start next week! Bring your friends!

Next Generation Update

Timothy’s leadership continues to prayerfully discern God’s will in moving forward with the Next Generation process. The Construction Task Force and other leaders have met recently with Mantel Teter Architects to view and discuss potential floor plans for expansion at Wyatt. Timothy’s leadership is genuinely excited about the potential for improving and expanding all ministries at Timothy, fulling believing God is faithful as we look forward to seeing how He blesses our ministry expansion efforts.

Financial Update

Timothy’s leadership also continues to balance excitement about moving forward with ministry expansion with funding support for it. While weekly worship attendance is slowly trending upward again, giving is steadily decreasing. Based upon the July financial report, there will be a projected shortfall of $300,000.00 by Dec. 31. Please be a part of the solution for a balanced budget by year end.

Stepping Aside or Stepping Up

No one expected winter in October. The trees were filled with their fall celebration, painting the world with oranges and yellows and reds. Then, the temperature dropped and a light rain turned into a thick and heavy snow. Layer after layer of heavy, wet snow piled up on trees and I heard a loud crash. A large branch had broken under the weight of the snow. The problem wasn’t the storm or the temperature — it was the timing.
I’ve never been much good at waiting. When I want something, I want it now. In short, I want to skip over the uncomfortable process and get to the satisfying results. But to skip over the waiting means to risk crashing. But I trust in you, LORD; I say, ‘You are my God. My times are in your hands’ . . Psalm 31:14-15a
As a church we are waiting for “the promised transformation”. We don’t know what that will look like or where we will end up, today we wait. Perhaps waiting isn’t as unproductive as it seems. At times, what happens during the fall is precisely what needs to happen to get us through the winter and to the spring.
We trust God knows the desire of our hearts. He’s a master of the process. Enjoy the slow fall of leaves and the sweet savoring of what is yet to come. Embrace the wait, slow as it may be, and trust that the One who paints the leaves and sends the snow knows precisely how to turn our waiting into a rewarding spring.

CrossWalk Starts Tomorrow

Timothy’s Wednesday evening children’s ministry program, CrossWalk, resumes tomorrow, Sept. 1, at RD Mize from 6:30-8pm for a fun-filled Kickoff Event! We welcome new and returning students to the Fellowship Hall for ice cream sundaes, team-building games & activities, and a special visit from King Rodnae!! You do not want to miss this!

Special Note:  Masks will be worn when in large-group activities but are optional when in smaller groups.

Steakburger Volunteers Urgently Needed

Timothy’s Festival Committee needs US! Timothy’s Steak Burger ministry, a long-standing outreach and in-reach fellowship opportunity, is famous for Timmy Burgers that “fly out of the steak burger booth” after festival goers wait in long lines for their burgers during the annual BS Fall Fun Fest in Downtown Blue Springs every September. This year’s festival is Sept. 17-19, and Timothy’s big red tent is always set up in front of Overhead Door at the corner of 11th & Main Streets. If you are new and have not yet been a part of this “well-oiled” process, it’s time to find out! And, veterans, now is the time for you to sign up as well! The Festival Committee relies on 300+ volunteers each year for this important ministry. To date, less than 100 people have volunteered. Please review the info below to select what will work for you.

If you prefer to remain “behind the scenes,” maybe cutting onions in the garage under the Overhead Door storefront on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 6-8pm appeals to you. Maybe you prefer to remain “behind the scenes” in this garage preparing “fixin’s,” such as trays of sliced cheese or containers of tomatoes or raw onions, during one of the shifts on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Or maybe you would enjoy working in the booth on the “assembly line.” Order takers, cooks, runners, and cashiers are also in high demand.

Please check out the shifts below. (Did you know your “compensation” for volunteering, in addition to feeling good about spreading the love of Jesus with the community, is a coupon for a free burger??)

Shifts at the booth in Downtown Blue Springs:
Friday, Sept. 17:

  • 8:45am-noon
  • 11:45am-4pm
  • 4pm-7:30pm
  • 7:30-pm-10:30pm

Saturday, Sept. 18:

  • 10am-1:30pm (great place to watch the parade!)
  • 1:30pm-4:30pm
  • 4:30pm-7:30pm
  • 7:30pm-10:30pm

Sunday, Sept. 19:

  • 9:45am-1pm
  • 1pm-4:15pm
  • Clean up & take down (start at 3pm)

Each year, proceeds from the Festival Committee’s Steak Burger Booth support many church  non-budgeted needs, such as narthex roof repair, replacement of sanctuary carpeting & tile, playground/drainage improvements, just to name a few of the most recent projects. In addition, the annual tithe from the proceeds has supported Timothy’s ministries in the areas of youth group events and support for seminarians.

Please contact Kathy Wilbers (816.365.6483) or Becky Blatt (816.291.5418) or email steakburgers@timothylutheran.com NOW to volunteer your time. Thank you!

Attention: Ladies
Women of Hope Invitation

Ladies, you are invited to the Women of Hope kickoff event for the coming year! Please join us for an evening of fellowship on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Stone Haus Farms Winery, 24607 NE Colbern Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64086, from 5-7pm.

We will meet at the outdoor shelter where appetizer trays will be provided. Please RSVP your attendance and any questions to Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com) or Nancy Nowiszewski (nancyn@timothylutheran.com) by Sept. 19. Rain date: Sept. 30

Attention: Men
Join the JourneyMen Red Letter Challenge

Join me in the JourneyMen 40-Day Red Letter Challenge. Too many followers of Jesus read the Bible but never put those words into practice. Likewise, there are many who do good works but aren’t sure why they are doing them.

Putting God’s Word into practice is much more effective when you are not alone. Commit to participate in the JourneyMen 40-Day Red Letter Challenge with a group of men as we use each other as accountability partners walking together in this journey. Stretch your faith by getting involved and doing the things God is asking you to do. When you feel ill-equipped and unprepared, God will use those moments to give, shape, and form your faith life.

SIGN UP TODAY! Information and registration for the JourneyMen Red Letter Challenge is available on the web at www.TimothyLutheran.com/JourneyMen/

Food Collection Update

Thank you, Timothy, for always embracing its non-perishable food and home supplies drives for the BS Community Services League, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Jesu el Buen in Kansas City. Each agency is always thrilled to receive Timothy’s donations.
Please note the following schedule for the remainder of 2021:

  • Due to the high demand for food, the September donations will also be designated for Hillcrest. Vanessa at Hillcrest reports that residents currently would appreciate donations of paper towels, toilet paper, tooth paste, individual bars of soap, shampoo, and after-school snacks for the kids.
  • Since CSL receives a huge amount of donations from the BS Community Unity Week initiative in October, Timothy’s donations in October AND November will be delivered to Jesu el Buen. This will include the traditional brown-bag food collection for Jesu parishioners to prepare a holiday meal.
  • Donations in December will be delivered to BS Community Services League.

Thank you to Carol Ready, Joe Sauter, Gary Flandermeyer, Dan Sbisa, and others who so generously give of their time to organize these drives and deliver them every month.

Stepping Aside or Stepping Up

Sometimes stepping aside to care for ourselves and let other people step into their callings can be humbling and hard. But this is exactly the kind of radical humility Jesus modeled for us.
So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. John 13:4-5
On that night when He bent low to wash the grimy feet of His disciples, He was communicating a deep love and profound lesson about leadership. Jesus washed His disciples’ feet to prepare them for the future. In a short time, He would be going to the cross — the ultimate act of humility — and then eventually returning to the Father. He washed their feet to equip them so they could step out into ministry too.
“And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:14-15

Jesus is clear that He wants His disciples to follow His example. He hopes for them to lead with humility. He longs for them to love lavishly by serving others. He eventually commissions them to bring the good news to the world. As this year begins, prayfully consider where your time and service is spent. Is it a time to step aside or step up.

Nursery Ministry

Staffed nurseries at both campuses are resuming on a part-time basis. Starting Wed., Sept. 1, the RD Mize Nursery will be staffed from 6:15-8:15pm for children under 3 years old. The RD Mize nursery will be open for parents to use on Sunday mornings but not staffed for the immediate future and until more use warrants it. Starting Sept. 5, the Wyatt nursery will be staffed on Sunday mornings from 9:45-11:15am.
Please call the church office (816.228.5300) if child care for other events is requested. We look forward to providing this ministry again! Thank you!

Children’s Ministry Update

Children’s Ministry leaders are excited to share that CrossWalk classes resume on Wednesday evenings, starting Sept. 1 for all children ages 3 to 5th grade from 6:30-8pm at RD Mize!  Go straight to the Family Life Center for a fun night of reconnecting with friends, playing games, and meeting your teachers—all while enjoying ice cream sundaes! Pre-register at www.timothylutheran.com/childrens-ministry/ Don’t delay! Bring your friends!

The need for additional teachers/helpers still exists. Child care in the nursery will resume on Wednesdays, and we hope that ministry helps you as a volunteer. If interested, please contact Pastor Ryan at ryanh@timothylutheran.com very soon!

It’s Steakburger Time Again

Timothy’s Festival Committee is once again actively soliciting volunteers to serve in a variety of ways for its Steak Burger Booth during the BS Fall Fun Fest on Sept. 16-19.  Stop by the table in both lobbies on Sunday mornings to sign up to work your shift(s) to help with “set up,” “fixin’s,” “booth,” “cook,” and “clean up.” You may also email steakburgers@timothylutheran.com to volunteer. Some prep occurs in the Family Life Center at RD Mize; other work occurs at the booth in Downtown Main Street in front of Builders Overhead Door at 11th & Main. Thank you for volunteering your help as we reach into the community to transform lives through Christ!

Youth Ministry Shoe Collection Fundraiser

Timothy’s youth packed 17 bags of 25 pairs of shoes in each bag. The goal is 100 bags of 25 pairs of shoes which will result in $1,000 for the out-of-town trips next year (Youth Quake and National Youth Gathering).  The collected shoes are sent directly to third world countries. All new or gently worn shoes are welcome (no tears, rips, excessive wear, holes). You can drop shoes in the bins located in both lobbies through Sept. 12th. Thanks for your support!

Youth Ministry Breakfast Debrief

Pancakes, hash brown, biscuits, gravy, warm syrup—that is what dreams are made of! Middle and Senior High Youth are invited to our Breakfast Debrief at the Blatt home (307 NW Chateau Dr, BSMO 64014) on Sat., Sept. 11, 10-11:30am. We will separate into senior and middle school groups to debrief about the beginning of school and other topics on our minds. As We Gather For Worship This Weekend

THEME:  The Heart of the Matter

CREATIVE TENSION:  We seem to have a love/hate relationship with the law.  On the one hand, we hate feeling boxed in by rules and expectations, but on the other hand, we love having goals, agendas, and standards set out that we can strive to achieve.  However, sometimes we become so distracted by our agendas, our dreams, and fulfilling the law we forget about our relationship with the Lord.  God’s people have always struggled with that as we will see in the readings today.  So what does our Lord have to say about all that and what has He done about it?

Hillcrest Transitional Housing Gala

What a tremendous experience! Last night, 18 Timothy members joined over 400 others at Arrowhead Stadium for Hillcrest’s annual gala. As a Silver Sponsor, Timothy is the only church in this category annually committing $5,000 for the gala. In addition, Timothy is one of 25 churches sponsoring one of the Hillcrest apartments. Thank you, Timothy, for supporting this valuable ministry. To God Be the Glory!

Care Minister Nancy Nowiszewski offered the invocation last night, and a video featured Timothy member Dan Sbisa as he shared the success story of Jennifer, Timothy’s recent Hillcrest graduate.

Pictured above are Tom & Nancy Nowiszewski, Lois Warren, Cathy Althoff & Doug Spilker, Jon & Vicki Kraft, Barb Kalbfleisch, Mel & Koko Falk, Pam Lund, Steve & Janel Schild, Angie Jones, Dan & Pam Sbisa, and Daryl & Becky Fowler.

Attention Men:
Join the JourneyMen 40-Day Red Letter Challenge
7-Week Study Coming Soon

Jesus-Centered:  Jesus is the greatest disciple-maker in the world. Putting His words into practice helps men discover the life God designed them to live. By staying focused on Jesus and the simple command to “hear and do” His words, we ensure a unifying experience for every man, beginning to end.

Practical Daily Challenges for Everyone:  All men 16 and older are personally invited to join the challenge. Our 40-Day Red Letter Challenge offers practical, clear, yet challenging next steps to help men of all ages and walks of life to grow their faith. Watch momentum, energy, and excitement build as we encourage and support one another in the pursuit to follow Jesus.

Discipleship Driven:  Christians can have good intentions all day long, but intentions without precise aim at exactly the One we are trying to like, Jesus, will always lead to unintended consequences. God has been gracious to all, and being compelled by that grace, we believe that following Jesus is the single greatest opportunity of our lifetime! By God’s grace and through our baptism, we begin each day new in Christ.

Mark your calendars: 7-Week Study starting Monday, Sept. 13, thru Monday, Oct. 25

Stuck? Or Slow and Steady Growth?

With all of life’s ups and downs, have you ever felt stuck? I do a great job at coaching other people on how to get unstuck and yet when it comes to my own life, I have the hardest time figuring anything out. I tend to want a perfect solution that’s wrapped in a perfect bow. The Lord gave me some ways out, as He kindly does. And then He graciously encouraged me that progress will always win out over perfection. God is not interested in perfection. His heart is for us to constantly grow and become like Him. His Holy Spirit gently reminded me of a truth I easily forget.

I am the true vine, and My Father is the vine dresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. John 15:1-2

The Lord is in the fruit-bearing business. Often, when we don’t see fruit, we panic and worry. It is in those times that He prunes us. He could be breaking some toxic thoughts or establishing new habits. He could be teaching us to rely solely on Him as our source. He could be stripping away pride and self-reliance. He prunes us because He loves us. He prunes us because He is a good Father. He always has our best in mind. Sometimes His best comes in the form of stuck. All we need to do is stay connected to the vine and the vine dresser will do what He does best — nourish and strengthen branches that produce much fruit.

Timothy Trivia

Do you know how many pastors have accepted a divine call to serve at Timothy over the past 60 years? (Answer: 12) Have you ever noticed portraits of Timothy’s pastors on the brick wall outside the sanctuary at RD Mize? Check it out soon, as Pastor Ryan’s portrait is ready to include.

Speaking of Timothy’s history, it was 60 years ago (Aug. 6, 1961) that a group of Missouri Synod Lutherans (31 communicant members & 15 children) met for the first time to begin planning a new Lutheran congregation in Blue Springs. The first worship service was held on Nov. 5, 1961, at Blue Springs Junior High School (aka Hansel Lowe School), and Timothy was officially chartered a year later on Nov. 18, 1962.

If you are interested in volunteering with other Timothy members to share some Timothy Trivia as “Did you know. . .” opportunities, please contact Diane Mayfield (dianem@timothylutheran.com or 816.228.5300 Ext. 8040) as soon as possible. How will Timothy’s “next generation” learn Timothy’s rich history if we don’t keep it in front of everyone?

Thank You, Timothy!

Timothy received the following thank-you note yesterday from Resource Health, formerly Rachel House, for recent financial donations from Timothy members.
“We sincerely thank you for your generous gifts to the ministry of Resource Health. Your on-going support continues to LEAD the way for us to love, educate, advocate and disciple the families who come through our doors. Please accept this small gift (magnet pictured here), showing just a few of the children who have been given the chance to live out their lives because of your kindness!
On behalf of all those we serve, thank you!
Rejoicing in Christ,
China Arbuckle”

It’s Steakburger Time Again

As We Gather For Worship This Weekend

THEME:  Homecoming

CREATIVE TENSION:    In the book of Proverbs, we have a lot of advice. Most of the book is pithy little sayings intended to give people guidance in how they should live and how they should behave. But occasionally, we find interesting pictures like this: Lady Wisdom building a house, setting her table for guests, and then inviting everyone in to eat and drink, to learn from her and grow in wisdom. We all understand the need for wisdom. But we also should remember the source of wisdom: it begins with the Lord. Where else can we go? He is the one who gives us life and light and wisdom.

Missions Outreach

The following letter was emailed to Kay Lieb this week! We praise God for Timothy’s connection with Carol Halter and her ministry. Please continue to keep all missionaries around the world in your prayers.

“Dear Kay and Members of Timothy’s LWML.
Praise the Lord! The lovely 433 crosses have now arrived—just yesterday! How exciting to receive these crosses. We do so appreciate them. Thank you so very, very much!

Quite often I hold seminars in different areas of Asia. Before COVID-19, I held a Discipleship Training Program for a large number of ladies. When I told about how the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of people, I mentioned that a new lady came to that church for the first time last week. She was very much interested in finding out more about the Christian faith. Her friend who had invited her to the worship service had not shown up—but she came anyway. Just as I was saying this, one of the women who was attending the Discipleship Training Program raised her hand and said, “The lady right across the aisle from me is the one you are talking about.” The Holy Spirit moved in her heart not only to come to church that Sunday but to attend the week-long training program as well. Her actions reflect the words in Psalm 119:103, “How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.” Do pray for this lady that she will believe and be baptized.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified (II Thess. 3:1).

With gratefulness to each of you for the lovely Gospel crosses.
Deaconess Carol Halter”

Moving Ministry Forward Through COVID-19

With each passing day and week, all of us learn of new recommendations and mandates regarding best ways to personally and communally stay safe from infection of COVID-19 and the variants.

The most recent conversations with regional governmental authorities have prompted Timothy to follow the CDC guidelines for the next 30 days or until revised. Staff and leadership urge everyone to respect each other’s perspectives, all the while carrying out Timothy’s ministries to transform lives through Christ. Timothy is committed to showing Christian care and concern so that each and every member and visitor can experience weekly, in-person worship.  According to the CDC guidelines, masks are strongly recommended. Thank you for your cooperation.

Adopt-a-Light, Round Two

Thank you, Timothy, for such generous support of the initial plea to fund LED lighting in rooms prior to VBS at RD Mize. Those contributions totaled $7,500, of which $2,700 covered the cost of the first 50 light kits (following discounts and rebates). Please stroll down the 400 hallway to appreciate the improved lighting in the hallway and classrooms.
Your financial support is again appreciated as Round Two of this project kicks off. The approximate $4,800 remaining from the initial drive is a jumpstart for the amount needed (approximately $20,000) to install LED lighting in all interior areas at RD Mize, except the sanctuary and Family Life Center. The opportunity to donate is still on the church website, and offering envelopes will again be included in the bulletin on Sunday. Thank you very much for your support!

A Message from Executive Board

At its regular monthly meeting this past week, the Executive Board reviewed Treasurer Gary Flandermeyer’s financial reports. While the “typical summer slump” is nothing new, the board urged communication to the congregation about a significant shortfall in general contributions beyond a summer slump.

As of the end of June, the last audited report, year-to-date (YTD) general contributions were 76% of budget. The YTD actual general contributions (where we are) are $572,248 compared to a YTD budget value (where we should be) of $755,230, indicating that general contributions are about $183,072 short of YTD budget. A look at general contributions as of 08/01/21 shows general contributions are approximately $222,500 short of budget. The Executive Board asks that you prayerfully consider how you can help reduce this shortfall of general contributions before it grows to an unmanageable level. Thank you very much!

Copies of the June 2021 financial reports can be found at the Information Centers as well as on Timothy’s website.

Planted on Purpose by Our Creator

This summer I was hanging out with a friend and she shared about her job and how she keeps googling these ideas she has and wondering why the methods she uses don’t already exist. She was looking for confirmation she wasn’t crazy. Instead of seeing the opportunity to be the one to bring her idea to the table, she assumed she was wrong because it hadn’t been done before. I found myself saying to my friend, “You are equipped because you’re called by our Father. And we need your kind of special, no matter how different you think it is.”

To me, it was obvious that my friend had gifts no one else had, but it was hard for my friend to see and accept her calling.

God has called plenty of women just like us to do things that have never been done before by a woman. They were each the first. No one had ever been a(n):

  • Mother like Eve
  • Worship leader like Miriam
  • Judge and prophet like Deborah
  • Queen-to-the-rescue like Esther
  • Evangelist like Mary Magdalene
  • Business leader funding missions like Lydia
  • Teacher of the gospel like Priscilla

None of these women were crazy. Each of them were simply called and empowered by God to do what He had already planned for them to accomplish with Him.
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.  But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 1 Corinthians 1:26-27

We’re not weird. We’re the ones called to do the thing we’re passionate about — those desires planted on purpose by our Creator. Timothy needs our kind of special talent, and many will be blessed by it.

TLS Hosts Lutheran Educators’ Day

Here it is again—Back-to-School Time! Last Wednesday, Timothy Lutheran School hosted the annual Lutheran Educators’ Day (LED) for metro area Lutheran educators to gather for fellowship and to start their year off right! Last year this event was canceled due to COVID, so everyone appreciated the chance to resume this important event.

One hundred fifty educators and administrators came to Timothy for a worship service officiated by Pastor Ryan and a message delivered by Pastor John. They also appreciated information about benefit plans shared by a representative from Concordia Plan Services. Guest speaker Dr. James Pingel Dean of
Education at Concordia University—Mequon, WI, spoke to the teachers and administrators about reconnecting with staff, students, and families. Everyone was refreshed and appreciative of time well spent with each other.

Special thanks to Karron Wands for all the organization and time spent by her and the many volunteers to make the program special. Glory be to God!

LWML Society Event

Women Welcome!

Mark Your Calendars!
Saturday, August 28
RD Mize Fellowship Hall
Brunch begins at 9am
Special Program:  Supporting Our Children As They Return to School:  Challenges of Learning During a Pandemic
Guest Speaker:  Dawn M. Callahan Dennis, Ed. D., CCC-SLP

Since March 2020, COVID-19 has turned what we know as “normal” on its head. Our children have experienced nothing but constant change with virtual school, hybrid school, in-person school with masks and social distancing, loss of activities, and loss of time with friends and family. Dr. Callahan, wife of Timothy School Administrator Ken Holland, is a Speech & Language Pathologist and Educational Consultant, and she will discuss how we can best support our children academically and socially during these times. Make plans to enjoy food, fellowship, and a timely discussion topic! Bring your friends!

TLS Playground Mulch Spread

Starting school includes spreading mulch on playgrounds! Last Saturday, thirteen volunteers donated their time to spread playground mulch on the two TLS playgrounds. The mulch had bleached itself and looked light brown at best!

This year’s volunteers were slightly fewer in number but still scooped, dragged, wheel-barrowed, and spread 80 cubic yards of baby mulch in less than three hours total! Thank-you very “mulch” to everyone who donated their time and talent for this project!

If Not for Grace

Timothy is pleased to share information with the congregation from one of its tithe organizations, If Not for Grace. In Springfield, MO, during the weekend of Aug. 27-29, If Not for Grace will host its Reconciliation Weekend.  It is a powerful timed for those hurting from the pain of an abortion decision.

Whether 3 months or 30 years, this three-day experience brings healing and reconciliation. If you are interested in attending, serving, or donating to the If Not for Grace Reconciliation Weekend, contact Paige at plucas@infg.org  Thank you!
