John 10:22-30 [NIV] | 22 Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. 24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
I find smartphones to be very handy and useful tools, but I have a real problem with them. I am always dropping my phone in liquid. So, when I purchased a new smartphone a year or so ago, I was excited to discover that one of the amazing new features on the device is the fact that it is water resistant. It can go down three or four feet under water and it will keep working.
Now that I have this amazing security and protection, how many times do you suppose I’ve dropped my phone in water? That’s right – zero. Now that I know for sure I can drop it in water without damaging it, I am longing for the day when I accidentally drop it in water. For some reason, now that I can, I don’t.
I realize that is not the best illustration, but it does bring home a point. How wonderful will it be when we fully realize that nothing can separate us from the love of God! A lot of people have misinterpreted the Scriptures and they think that they are saved by grace, but then can lose eternal life by sinning again. Let me tell you something: if we are saved by grace, we are going to sin again. It is just part of life. We shouldn’t, but we do because we still have the old nature. When we are not walking in the Spirit, we are going to walk in the flesh. We will sin and God will lovingly chasten us. Yet, we will never be cast out. We have the security that we are a child of God – safe, secure, and sealed!
